Essential Guitar Bar Chord Lessons & Charts

In this book you’ll learn over 35 different bar chords needed for playing many different styles of music on guitar. Along with the handy, full color illustration included in each lesson, you’ll also be walked through the procedure of proper chord placement for ease of reference when making and learning these essential bar chords.

Of the bar chords and power chords included in this manual, you’ll find that you’ll use many of them quite often, while others you may rarely or never use. This all depends on your style of playing and the music genre for which you play.

The first thing you’ll want to do before we get started is to tune up.

1. A Bar Chord

To properly make the A Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 5th fret. Next, place your second finger on the G string on the 6th fret and then your third finger on the A string on the 7th fret. Finally, place your fourth finger on the D string on the 7th fret.

When making the A Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the high e string.

2. A Bar Chord

To properly make the A Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 5th fret. Next, place your third finger on the G string on the 6th fret and then your fourth finger on the D string on the 7th fret.

When making the A Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

3. Am Bar Chord

To properly make the Am Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 5th fret. Next, place your second finger on the A string on the 7th fret and then your third finger on the D string on the 7th fret. When some people play the Am Bar Chord, they sometimes bar their third finger across the A and D strings on the 7th fret instead of using their second and third finger.

When making the Am Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

4. Am6 Bar Chord

To properly make the Am6 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the G, B & E strings on the 5th fret. Next, place your second finger on the A string on the 7th fret and then your third finger on the D string on the 7th fret. Finally, place your fourth finger on the B string on the 7th fret.

When making the Am6 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the low e string.

5. Am7 Bar Chord

To properly make the Am7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the D, G, B & E strings on the 5th fret. Next, place your third finger on the A string on the 7th fret and then your fourth finger on the B string on the 8th fret.

When making the Am7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

6. Am7 Bar Chord

To properly make the Am7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the D, G, B & E strings on the 5th fret. Next, place your third finger on the A string on the 7th fret.

When making the Am7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

7. A6 Bar Chord

To properly make the A6 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the D, G, B & E strings on the 2nd fret.

When making the A6 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the low e string.

8. A7 Bar Chord

To properly make the A7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 5th fret. Next, place your second finger on the G string on the 6th fret and then your third finger on the A string on the 7th fret.

When making the A7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

9. A7 Bar Chord

To properly make the A7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the D, G & B strings on the 2nd fret. Next, place your second finger on the E string on the 3rd fret.

When making the A7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

10. A7 Bar Chord

To properly make the A7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 5th fret. Next, place your second finger on the G string on the 6th fret and then your third finger on the A string on the 7th fret.

When making the A7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the high e string.

11. B Bar Chord

To properly make the B Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the bottom 5 strings (A through high E) on the 2nd fret. Next, bar your third finger on the D, G & B strings on the 4th fret.

When making the B Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the high e string.

12. Bm Bar Chord

To properly make the Bm Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the A, D, G, B & E strings on the 2nd fret. Next, place your second finger on the B string on the 3rd fret and then your third finger on the D string on the 4th fret. Finally, place your fourth finger on the G string on the 4th fret.

When making the Bm Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the low e string.

13. Bm Bar Chord

To properly make the Bm Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the A, D, G, B & E strings on the 2nd fret. Next, place your second finger on the D string on the 3rd fret and then your third finger on the G string on the 3rd fret. Finally, place your fourth finger on the B string on the 3rd fret. You may find that it is easier to bar your second or third fingers across the D, G & B strings on the 3rd fret instead of using your second, third and fourth fingers as outlined above.

When making the Bm Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the low e string.

14. B7 Bar Chord

To properly make the B7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the A, D, G, B & E strings on the 2nd fret. Next, place your third finger on the D string on the 4th fret and then your fourth finger on the B string on the 4th fret.

When making the B7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the low e string.

15. C Bar Chord

To properly make the C Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 8th fret. Next, place your second finger on the G string on the 9th fret and then your third finger on the D string on the 10th fret.

When making the C Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

16. C Bar Chord

To properly make the C Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the D, G, B & E strings on the 5th fret. Next, place your fourth finger on the E string on the 8th fret.

When making the C Bar Chord, you’ll generally play only the D, G, B & E strings. The 6th E and the 5th A strings aren’t played.

17. C Bar Chord

To properly make the C Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the A, D, G, B & E strings on the 3rd fret. Next, bar your third finger across the D, G & B strings on the 5th fret.

When making the C Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the low e string.

18. C7 Bar Chord

To properly make the C7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the D, G, B & E strings on the 5th fret. Next, place your third or fourth finger on the E string on the 6th fret.

When making the C7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play only the D, G, B & E strings. The 6th E and the 5th A strings aren’t played.

19. C7 Bar Chord

To properly make the C7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the A, D, G, B & E strings on the 3rd fret. Next, place your third finger on the D string on the 5th fret and then your fourth finger on the B string on the 5th fret.

When making the C7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play only the D, G, B & E strings. The 6th E and the 1st E strings aren’t played.

20. Cm Bar Chord

To properly make the Cm Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 8th fret. Next, place your second finger on the E string on the 10th fret and then your third finger on the A string on the 10th fret. You may find it easier to bar your third finger across the E and A strings on the 10th fret.

When making the Cm Bar Chord, you’ll generally play only the E, A, D & G strings. The 2nd B string and the 1st E string aren’t played.

21. D Bar Chord

To properly make the D Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 10th fret. Next, place your second finger on the G string on the 11th fret and then your third finger on the A string on the 12th fret. Now, place your fourth finger on the D string on the 12th fret.

When making the D Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the high e string.

22. Dm7 Bar Chord

To properly make the Dm7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the G, B & E strings on the 2nd fret.

When making the Dm7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally all of the strings except for the low e string.

23. Dm Bar Chord

To properly make the Dm Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 10th fret.

Next, place your second finger on the A string on the 12th fret and then your third finger on the D string on the 12th fret.

When making the Dm Bar Chord, you’ll generally play only the E, A, D & G strings. The 2nd B string and the 1st E string aren’t played.

24. D7 Bar Chord

To properly make the D7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 10th fret. Next, place your second finger on the G string on the 11th fret and then your third finger on the A string on the 12th fret.

When making the D7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the high e string.

25. E Bar Chord

To properly make the E Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the D, G, B & E strings across the 9th fret. Next, place your fourth finger on the E string on the 12th fret.

When making the E Bar Chord, you’ll generally play the low E string, skipping the A string and then playing the rest of the strings D through high E.

26. E Bar Chord

To properly make the E Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the A, D, G, B & E strings across the 7th fret. Next, bar your third finger across the D, G & B strings on the 9th fret.

When making the E Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

27. Em Bar Chord

To properly make the Em Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across A, D, G, B & E strings across the 7th fret. Next, place your second finger on the B string on the 8th fret and then your third finger on the D string on the 9th fret. Finally, place your fourth finger on the G string on the 9th fret.

When making the Em Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

28. E7 Bar Chord

To properly make the E7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the D, G, B & E strings across the 9th fret. Next, place your fourth finger on the E string on the 10th fret.

When making the E7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play the low E string, skipping the A string and then playing the rest of the strings D through high E.

29. E7 Bar Chord

To properly make the E7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the A, D, G, B & E strings across the 7th fret. Next, place second finger on the D string on the 9th fret and your third finger on the B string on the 9th fret.

When making the E7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

30. F Bar Chord

To properly make the F Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the first fret. Next, place your second finger on the G string on the 2nd fret and your third finger on the A string on the 3rd fret. Finally, place your fourth finger on the D string on the 3rd fret.

When making the F Bar Chord, you’ll generally all of the strings except for the high e string.

31. Fm Bar Chord

To properly make the Fm Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across the 1st fret. Next, place your third finger on the A string on the 3rd fret and your fourth finger on the D string on the 3rd fret.

When making the Fm Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

32. F7 Bar Chord

To properly make the F7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across all of the strings on the 1st fret. Next, place your second finger on the G string on the 2nd fret and your third finger on the A string on the 3rd fret.

When making the F7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the 2nd B string and the 1st E string.

33. G Bar Chord

To properly make the G Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across all of the strings across the 3rd fret. Next, place your second finger on the G string on the 4th fret and your third finger on the A string on the 5th fret. Finally, place your fourth finger on the D string on the 5th fret.

When making the G Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings.

34. G7 Bar Chord

To properly make the G7 Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across all of the strings on the 3rd fret. Next place your second finger on the G string on the 4th fret and your third finger on the A string on the 5th fret.

When making the G7 Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the high e string.

35. Gm Bar Chord

To properly make the Gm Bar Chord, simply bar your first finger across all of the strings on the 3rd fret. Next, place your third finger on the A string on the 5th fret and your fourth finger on the D string on the 5th fret.

When making the Gm Bar Chord, you’ll generally play all of the strings except for the 2nd B string and the 1st E string.

Footnotes

I couldn’t leave you without a great way to reference how the guitar strings are identified from one through six and high e through low e.

You’ll notice the “E6”, “A5” and so on and so fourth. The E indicates the E string and the 6 indicates that it is the 6th string on the guitar. You’ll also notice a thick line underneath the “E6” and how the lines get thinner as you move towards the 1st string which is indicated by the “E1”.
