STORAGE RSA

Packing & Moving Tips If you are using a removal company, find out what size truck they will be using – some removal companies charge per volume used whereas others charge for the size of the truck. Note that larger trucks have limited access to the storage site and storage units (see the Storage RSA Truck Access document) Make arrangements with a removal company or reserve a rental truck – schedule your move 30-45 days in advance. Do not assume that your household insurance covers the goods in transit – make the necessary arrangements. Prepare an inventory record of box numbers and contents; mark the boxes on the sides and ends. This will enable you to easily identify the contents of each box. Fill each box to its capacity. Do not overload boxes; bulging boxes are liable to fall. Half packed boxes may collapse, under the weight of other boxes. Use small boxes for heavy items like books and cutlery and larger boxes for other lighter household items. Seal all the boxes with packaging tape this will secure all your boxes so they don't open while loading. Remember when using pressure-sensitive tapes, a light pressure is sufficient to make it stick. Be careful to use newspaper – the ink smears and contains acid that can damage for instance painted porcelain. Wrap dishes and glasses in tissue paper, or use bubble wrap to protect fragile items. Use newspaper only for padding. Acid-free tissue paper is brilliant for wrapping fragile china. Use mattress covers or plastic tubing to protect and extend the life of your mattress or to keep your furniture fresh and clean during the move. Clothing can be kept in dresser drawers; you won't need boxes for these items. Have your move simple and easy by packing your jackets, dresses and suites in specially designed hanger boxes. Talk to your Facility Manager to demonstrate how this box can simplify your move. Use brown SFK or blankets to protect your table tops and cupboards from scratching. This can also be used to protect the legs, corners and edges of tables and other furniture. Fragile goods should be marked very clearly to ensure that it is handled with care by the removal company. Use “Fragile” stickers to indicate which boxes contain the fragile items. Notify all the relevant people about the change of address. To protect your items in transit, cover them with additional moving pads, sheets or light blankets so your items are properly cushioned against impact. Use the available hoists and trolleys if necessary. Ensure that you read the instructions and max weight load.
