TRAI DLT registration set to eliminate Spam and Fraud from Indian Telecom Industry In 2018, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released a regulation to control Unsolicited Commercial Communication and maintain better privacy for mobile subscribers. In the extended efforts to set up a simpler and transparent system for Indian Telecom Industry, TRAI has now introduced the Distributed Ledger Technology registration. With this process of registration, TRAI is aiming to root out the problem of Spamming and fraud spreading through the SMS services which has been a concern for many years. This latest regulation commands the use of DLT registration to resolve this long impending problem of Spam and Fraud. Initially, TRAI had declared the deadline of February 5th, 2020 for the registration of Enterprise and Sender ID on the DLT platform to continue using the SMS marketing services. And it is mandatory, as per the new regulation, to complete this registration in order to keep using the SMS services. Post this date, only registered entities will be able to utilize the SMS services from the operators. A non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 5900.00 will be applicable after the deadline, which is being waived off till the deadline date. However, the grace period for the registration has extended and no specific date has been declared. The registrations are still on-going for free, but it’s questionable how long it will remain free. Getting registered as Telemarketers or Entity is extremely necessary for Aggregators and Resellers, in order to keep sending messages. How & Where to Register To register yourself on the DLT platform you need the link provided by the Network Operators where you need to fill your basic information and upload your KYC documents as well. While registering yourself, you need to choose between the option of Telemarketer or Enterprise. Telemarketers will be registered under the operators and Entities (it includes resellers and end-users) will be registered under the Telemarketers.
