July 2nd... the big arrival day - a day everyone, both SHADs and Faculty alike, had all been excitedly waiting for! When the clock struck 1:00pm, the students began to arrive. Those who came early were greeted by a chorus of songs and chants from the hyper-excited Staff.

Upon checking in with Kim and picking up a collection of items that would be needed throughout the duration of the program, the first flock of SHAD Waterloo 2017 Geese flew off to their rooms to begin unpacking and setting up their things for the month. With their newly acquired Name Tag, Room Key and a SHAD Bag containing a Journal and an essential Binder with them, the SHADlings began the inevitable First Introductions - many bonded over trading their special Deck of Cards containing their unique Card Number.

After a tour around the area, a Paul was waiting for some SHAD Folks - with all of the program’s camping tents. In order to prepare for the weekend’s Camping Expedition to Cyprus Lake at Bruce Peninsula National Park, Paul had all incoming SHAD Waterloo attendees practice building themselves a tent in case of any weather-related emergencies.

After the first of many hearty suppers, everyone gathered in Conrad Grebel’s Great Hall to participate the much-anticipated Welcome Challenge! Despite sounding like a simple task of just getting a marble into a cup, the Challenge happened to be way more complicated than everyone thought. Several arguments with Paul about loopholes later, the SHAD Students were freakishly working hard to delay and trap a marble dropping into a cup, all while trying to negotiate for materials with the Bank (aka the tough to crack PAs).

Following some quick Introduction Circles and an introduction to the Conrad Grebel Doms, Jonathan and Jonathan (not kidding!), everyone, both SHAD Attendees and Faculty/Staff were asked to get out the one piece of homework we were tasked to complete before SHAD - the Bio-Tile! Taking the lead, the Staff and Faculty presented their Bio-Tile in front of all SHADlings. From there, the SHADs formed into their House Groups to present their own Tile.

Although the day may have been busy, there was still a lot more to come that month - oh, just you wait!

We had our first morning at SHAD, and all went well. We had an awesome breakfast of French toast, then met up and walked to the environment building where we had our first workshop / lesson. We returned for a make your own sandwich’ lunch, then back for the second lesson of the day.

ur lessons were on prototyping, which is the process of implementing your ideas

in a physical or demonstrative way. We learned several methods of prototyping such as storyboarding (to show logical flow of process), using paper, brick-collage (which is making a physical model that resembles the shape of the idea), and iterative prototyping, which is starting at a rough and simple prototype and refining for detail and fidelity. We were challenged to be creative in our prototyping by thinking outside the box. We were introduced to the concepts of mindfulness and observations, where we were challenged to not just see, but actively look. This means to really consider the sights and experience you have so you can learn from them and be able to connect to them later. Connections are very important in solving significant problems. The last lesson was on research, and we were reminded of the process of research, as well as introduced to some reputable sources of information such as the patent system.

Next, we were given a list of locations to find and explore as a way of orienting ourselves around campus. After dinner, we had a whole group chat about expectations, and the rules surrounding the absence of rules. I think the staff here seem pretty cool, and will be lots of fun. Then we had a fun first rec session of name the tune’, where Lydia would play a few seconds of a song and each house had a sheet to write down what they thought the song was.

Everyone was having fun, but it was house three that won first to snack’ privileges, and snack involved a conversation between roommates over pret els and watermelon.

ur second morning at SHAD started off with another great breakfast. In the morning, we headed over to the KI studio for more design workshops. Today’s workshops focused on the W-model , a design framework involving moving frequently between the problem space and the solution space to recursively refine our problem. Throughout the day, we had workshops on each of the

stages of a single cycle of the W-model: ideation, in which you contribute

concrete solutions, synthesis, in which you group these solutions into themes, assessment, in which you analyse these themes to determine which is the most feasible, desirable, viable and valid and reflection, in which you reflect on the chosen theme(s) to create a more specific how might we question. To practise the W-model, we used the question of how might we solve the trash problem on campus

combined with our observations on trash from our

campus walk on the previous day.

Right before dinner, we were asked if we could play musical instruments - everyone was confused as we were slowly plucked out of the room in suspense. From there, everyone was sorted into groups. Each group was then tasked with the impossible: We had to come up with a musical performance in front of the whole group with only an hour to prepare. et somehow, everybody pulled it off. Some memorable performances included: a rendition of Canada by the staff on ka oos, a mash-up of See ou Again and clarinet, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and ABC’s concluded with Happy Birthday dedicated to Let Go on guitar and piano, and the

It was overall a great bonding experience between all of us as we struggled together.

After breakfast, we met on the patio and found out what our first rec of the month would be.

We walked down to the small field near E 2. We all took pool noodles and played hockey with a whiffle ball. At one point a children’s summer camp group walked by, and one small kid proclaimed loudly What the heck is that

overheard him. Slightly exhausted, we returned to Grebel to try and cool off and clean up. We returned to E 2, late but with bubble tea, and learned the topic of the month’s main project.

We heard from our first guest speakers, who gave us context to energy efficiency problems in Canada and some solutions and methods to address them. We compared different forms of energy and learned how much energy was lost during the conversion from a primary source to useable power. A game of question the question got pretty out of hand between Aaron and Josh. We went to lunch, and then back to E 2 where we used the W model to come up with 1 H W questions, narrowing down the starting topic. We then voted and selected

questions

to pursue further. We did a survey to help the staff place us in our project groups. We trickled into the community supper, nervously sitting with the Grebel students for the first time. We got to talk to them and learn more about the university and the residence communities. The food was so good, I mean did you see that bread

We were all exhausted by the end of it. We don’t know how basketball or frisbee went, but I’m sure they had fun. We went to the PA panel, where we all got to ask questions about school, life, and deciding what to do with your life. We then went to snack, and ended the day.

liked about SHAD, what we wanted from the future and what we disliked. For home six, house time was absolutely hilarious. We invented shad slang with terms like spicey to replace lit . By the way, our house was also productive in how we shared highlights, expectations, and goals for the rest of shad. The people were a common highlight, a lot of people expected shad to be more STEA -oriented, and the goals often involved learning names and getting to know more people. After several workshops and a practice project, it was finally time to get our questions and groups for the big project. This was a special year because everyone got their first choice of topic. Groups worked on their first real w-cycle and came up with many ideas both wacky and practical.

In preparation for the camping trip, we were given excellent advice from some very qualified individuals. Snack was great because of the trivia questions we had to answer first, but the best part of salon was the crescendo: the establishment of home 7. They completely dominated the house system and converted all people to members of their home. A massive line of tables was formed where every SHAD sat. We added a ton of people on snapchat and took some fantastic group photos.

n Friday morning we had a Whole Group improv session in the Great Hall. We had to walk around the room and name different objects or people with a variety of rules set in place. ou had to actually name the object for the first round. For the next rounds we had to name the last object we pointed at, then something that it was completely and utterly not and finally we had to call it the first thing that came to our mind. We then played a game of

help encourage us to build on our partner s ideas and to come up with weird and wacky stories. We then played building on idea games where we practiced listening skills and creative group working skills by planning a trip to different places in our imaginations. We then had project time before we finished preparing and packed for Cyprus. We drove for about three hours to get to the site.

The beautiful morning started out with a scrumptious bowl of porridge, which gave us the energy we needed to start the long day ahead. After breakfast, I went on a km hike around Cyprus Lake with six of my fellow SHADs. We got some nice pictures of the lake and of ourselves. We even spotted some lily pads with yellow and white lilies on them as well as some crayfish along the shore. We marvelled at the lake and took a lot of pictures so it took around two hours to complete the entire hike. Luckily, we still made it back in time for lunch, which was prepared and served by Teams ellow and Green. We had bagels with chicken and tuna salad. Immediately after eating, we changed into our bathing suits and set out for Indian Head Cove/Georgian Bay. We were all super pumped and excited so we got to the Cove pretty quick. The view was breathtaking as it was just the right amount of sunlight glistening over the turquoise water. As expected, the water was pretty cold, but it wasn’t anything we ama ing SHADs couldn’t handle! Just kidding! The majority of us stayed in the kiddie pool /hot tub half the time. Anyways, after getting terrible swimsuit tans, we headed back to our campground.

nce there, we split up and had free time to do our own thing. As a result,

some of us went hiking to explore other lakes, some of us took a nap, and others played various games at the campsite (Frisbee, badminton, juggling, and soccer). We chose to learn how to juggle, which wasn’t as easy as it looked. We were taught by Jacob, a pro juggler. After practicing for about half an hour, we got the hang of it and feelings of exhaustion as well as hunger crept over us as dinnertime approached. Dinner consisted of burgers, and marshmallows were roasted on the campfire. We started singing along to songs on ukuleles and guitars, proving that the talent here is absolutely ama ing. Afterwards, we went on a silent night walk to go starga ing. We lied down on the dock at Horse Lake, but the sky was so cloudy that we only saw about

stars at most. Fortunately, the fireflies we passed on the

way majestically illuminated our path. Also, the moon was super bright so it was great having the path well-lit as we walked in total silence. The air felt damp and heavy with the plants still sweltering from the heat of the day. The mosquitoes were relentless all day long as well. But all in all it was a great day.

slumber, we went to grab breakfast which consisted of porridge and leftovers. Ready to sei e the day, we quickly packed up our tents, arranged ourselves into groups setting out on hikes across Bruce Peninsula. Groups went to

Everyone had to return for the last meal at the campsite which was whatever was leftover from previous meals. With haste. we packed the bus and boarded for our three hour drive home. Everyone, exhausted from the past two days, slept on the bus for most of the trip.

Perhaps, it was the cornfields streaking by sending us into our slumber, or the gentle sway over bumps: we slept. The sleep prepped us for the mad dash to get either a shower or a washing machine. This struggle was interrupted only by announcement for dinner. After hours of mayhem we all gathered to hear a presentation from the NW A (Nuclear Waste anagement Association). The two presenters Isaac and

of a uranium pellet from the reactor to storage and the risks associated. They allowed us to lead the questions and concerns to uncover how much thought was put into the new plan to deal with

We woke up itchy and sore after the long camping trip weekend and slowly made our way to breakfast. After eating, we went downstairs to the Great Hall for our umba session. Julie, the forever-smiling instructor, Â led us through the upbeat and sweaty world of umba, causing a mad dash for the showers afterwards. Following an hour of project time, we went to the studio to listen to the dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first guest speaker, an Chandler, and her presentation on Thinking in Systems with a focus on feedback loops. She presented examples of the Canadian film industry and related the topic back to our wicked problem. After lunch, we learned the basics of sketching from

develop prototypes and articulate our ideas more effectively. We took turns sketching each other s morning routines and travel experiences. Immediately following his presentation, we each selected our community project groups and began the long process of designing, planning, and dividing up the roles to accomplish our goals before going to dinner. Later, we all met at RCH to meet the last guest speaker of the night, business ventures in Nano

had finished speaking, Rob announced to us that Silvy would be leaving us because of her concussion. Everyone was pretty shaken, and many of us became quite emotional, but we eased ourselves into an hour of project time. During salon, some of us made a card for everyone to sign for Silvy, and collected a full deck of cards for her. We all went down to the practice room and listened to Silvy, Aaron, and Frank play some ama ing improv on the piano long into the night. We had only known each other for a week, but saying goodbye to Silvy felt like saying goodbye to a member of our family.

The morning started with the finest of Grebelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s waffles and fried eggs. It was a good morning.

At rec, we enjoyed playing soccer, doing yoga, and being yelled at during boot camp. Soon after, we had a lecture with the one and only Paul

cKone about how we can improve our

projects by incorporating a user-centric design in the model, which introduced us to a new set of ideas that are sure to help along the way. After eating a wonderful Grebel lunch, we took a new look at something most of us considered very basic - linear algebra. Using matrices, Elissa taught us a new way to model the solution of a system of linear equations.

This being one of our first looks at a very STE -oriented topic, we were excited to learn how computers use this method to process lots of little linear systems all around our everyday lives. We then got to take a look at the first of our -day classes in our Workshop Series A. The topics were business, energy in the environment, mathematics of game theory, intro to computer science, and an introduction to the creation of electronic music. Both of us chose the electronic music class as one of our top options, and enjoyed it to the fullest. Not only did we see how someone could play a fruit as a musical instrument, but we also got to build our own musical instrument based on the same principles, and experiment with some really cool electronic music equipment. In the evening, we heard from

developer, about his odyssey through the video game industry and what he has learned from it. This story was truly inspiring for a lot of SHADs, of which many are interested in the field of computer science and game development. We then had our first full meeting for our community projects, spitting out plenty of ideas and getting some exceptional ideas into play.

It was finally time for salon, and then sleep - something a lot of us were looking forward to. verall, the day started to introduce us to the STE -oriented side of SHAD, and got us even more interested in the community we were a part of.Â

Wednesday morning began bright and early with a yummy breakfast of Red River Cereal, boiled eggs and assorted muffins. It was entertaining to watch everyone attempt to peel the egg shells off of their eggs. Although they savoured their breakfast, many were in a hurry, anxious to get to their long anticipated rec sessions they signed up for.

Following Rec we had a presentation about shape memory alloys by Rob Gorbet. His presentation educated and inspired us to think about materials for our own design projects.

Following this we were able to work with our project groups, working to incorporate the advice we received from the project definition review into our design projects. After this we had lunch consisting of perogies with onions and sour cream, soup and cookies. Following lunch Susan gave a presentation on thoughtless acts. She taught us about the human mind and what causes us to take certain actions. She then sent us off for our second day of workshops. In the business workshop, we took our survey questions to social media and Waterloo University students to learn more about how to make our design project appeal to people around our age. The night was highlighted by our second community supper with the Grebel students. We all came together to enjoy ribs, mashed potatoes and listen to Bess itchel, a SHAD alum and former PA, who shared her experience with everyone before we headed off to the Gustav Bakos

July 13th, 6:00 A.M, Eastern Standard Time. It is a dark and rainy day. The earliest of early risers wake up, and head to the Lounge to work on their projects for their final business workshop.

8:55 A.M., Eastern SHAD Time. As the SHADs finish their breakfast, they make their way to the Great Hall to discover (and uncover) the distant secrets of Kung Fu. After an hour of punching, blocking, and breaking free from choking, all SHADs suddenly feel much more secure in the goose-infected campus of Waterloo.

10:30 A.M., Eastern Standard Time. Paul and Susan offer sage advice for the SHADs’ projects: trade secrets - among which include the apt rebranding of Progress Report’ as Status Update’ in the absence of progress.

12:30 P.M, Eastern Standard Time. Sauerkraut on hot dogs. Some seminar professors join the SHADs for lunch.

The day started off with a choose your own adventure’ rec where you could play beach volleyball or ultimate frisbee. Both recs were really fun, active, and challenging. We know this because we both took part in different activities. After that, we had a whole group session where Rob talked about connections in our lives from ideas to people. This talk was really meaningful because it made us think about the decisions and assumptions we make when engaging with people. Connections bring purpose and meaning to our lives. We also talked about vulnerability and how it’s best to assume good intent. We also got to pick our workshops which was really exciting, it was so hard to choose the options since they were all unique and interesting. The options were anatomy, genetic engineering, pharmaceutical chemistry, D printing, and game design. We both picked pharmaceutical chemistry, hopefully we get it! After making that hard decision we had lunch and then the PAL Seminars.

learn new skills. We got to learn a useful tool for project management and how to set realistic goals. We had project time and after dinner we had a reflective whole group session. We did an activity called cross the line, where we answered some personal questions and some of them really hit close to home. This made us reali e that you shouldn’t assume things, everyone here are from different backgrounds, cultures, environments, and have their own unique experiences and values. To summari e, this day really made us think and reflect, as well as learn skills we can apply in our own lives.

The end of week two was a blast! Saturday, July 1 held lots of activities, adventures, and for some, this included testing the limits of their growth one. The day began with a mishap in the bussing to the Chicopee Adventure Centre, when the second bus didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t arrive. Several of the SHADs had to join Elissa in the program minivan. At Chicopee, the SHADs split into three big groups by their house numbers and joined in the activities of rock climbing, high rope obstacle courses, and low rope activities. All of the activities from belaying to balancing on a log prompted us to work collaboratively, and our entire community grew together in the process.

oreover, it was a chance for some of us to rock climb for the first time ever, so we

constantly encouraged one another to keep going and yelled out tips on which way was the best to climb up. When we gathered back to the main entrance to board the two buses (yes, two!), it was hard to believe that it was only the very beginning of an eventful day. It was undoubtedly an ama ing way to kick off our weekend! After lunch, back at Conrad Grebel, the SHAD Seminars were presented. Each SHAD presented one of their passions to a group of fellow SHADs, which ranged from computer programming to breaking apples with your bare hands to squash (the sport). We ended the seminars in an attempt to determine the surprise two-hour rec that followed dinner, and were unsuccessful in our feats. We entered the Great Hall after dinner to a man and a woman the man with a guitar and the woman in a flamenco dress. For the following two hours, all the SHADs were taught the basics of flamenco dancing, including the music, clapping, footwork, and arm movements. The night ended in a dance showdown, and everyone was famished going into snack and salon.

We kicked the day off with some dee-lish banana pancakes! Then again, most of us would not know because most of us were sleeping in. Well, we were, which left us no banana pancakes.

Then, lunch and catch-up time proceeded as normal, we were so glad for lunch because I had not eaten for the past eighteen hours. After that, we all walked to the studio and presented our workshop posters. The posters all looked fantastic and the goal of them were  to give us a brief picture of what was taught in the workshop. Next, we ran into project time where we continued to make progress on each of our respective projects. Before we could run off to dinner though, we had a PA panel in the studio. As per usual, silly questions were asked, Peter used his accent, and Tina got grilled. Nevertheless, some good questions slipped through, and they still managed to instil us with some valuable knowledge. After a nice dinner, an hour of catch-up time followed. It is so great to have some down-time to yourself or a group of friends after a long day of work and struggle. Subsequently, we were then whisked off downstairs to listen to Hari Stirbet lecture on social entrepreneurship. We think we will all be able to remember him by his gorgeous, endearing accent, his great sense of humour and his adorable little son, Joshua.

Finally, our day concluded with the usual session of salon, snack and then sleep. SHAD has been spectacular so far and both of us cannot believe that there is only twelve days left. :(

Today we woke up at the sound of our synced alarm clocks and subconsciously braced ourselves for what we knew would be a jam packed day predominantly filled with many long project briefing sessions. Gloomy clouds rolled slowly over the sky but we didn t let the subpar weather dampen our spirits. We fueled ourselves for the busy day ahead with a hearty breakfast which included bagels, poached eggs and potatoes. Proceeding breakfast we had a no sweat recreation session that involved us going into our house groups and brainstorming ideas of what we wanted to do for rec that week. All the idea s were fun and engaging so it was trial narrowing down the options. House 1 decided on the game big wind blows which is an ice breaker game. House

settled on a tamer, less violent version of the Hunger Games.

We couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait to see how those activities would turn out! We walked over to the Engineering

building and had a blast taking apart and comparing the design of different

coffee makers. It taught us how to assess the criteria of an item to ensure it performs all its necessary functions. We were able to step into the shoes of engineers today which was an enjoyable and informative experience indeed. We were fortunate enough to be granted a tour from an engineering graduate student who showed us an electric energy efficient car that Waterloo students built themselves. After this workshop, during catch up time, we headed to the retail store to check out some merchandise we could purchase for memory sake. Lunch was a warm and delicious plate of macaroni and cheese. After lunch we had an interesting lesson on how to properly give and receive feedback, an important skill to have regardless of what area of work we head into in the future. For the rest of the day we had a lot of project time to prepare visual prototypes for Demo night. Demo night provided us an opportunity to show physical prototypes or storyboards of our product as proof of what we had accomplished so far. It was interesting seeing the idea s of other groups and the different solutions everyone had. All of us were able to provide constructive criticism to each other which gave us an opportunity to practice how to effectively give and receive feedback. All in all, today was very busy but we both hit the bed with a resounding sense accomplishment.

Waking up early in the morning at 7:00 A. ., a regular day of activity begins for the SHADs at the University of Waterloo. Starting off the SHAD-led recreational activity week, Houses 1 and 2 decided to join together to facilitate a rough game of stones. Arranged into

teams, the

SHADs faced off against each other in intense running, tagging, planning, and psyche-out plays. The morning ends with movement into project time, where group members of each project group had time to recollect and read the responses and feedback from demo night.

With the Project conference creeping closer day by day, the crunch of time presses SHADs to work harder, all the while bringing new excitement with each day. A meal of bagel sandwiches topped with tomato soup and a side of egg salad gave fresh, gave rejuvenating energy.

oving into a keynote speaker session, Larry Smith gave a talk that was one of the

most unique and engaging talk of all of SHAD. With decades of experience teaching and expressing, teaching 1/10 of all Waterloo Alumni, and 1/ of all Waterloo Engineers, he is one of the most profound Economics professors at the University of Waterloo. His inspirational talk about how we can change the future as people of SHAD gave encouragement to those groups that still struggled with their projects. With workshop sessions for the week beginning, SHADs were excited to be introduced to their selected topics. The Anatomy Lab group was able to explore an in-depth view of in the department of Kinesiology. The Genetic Engineering group started out by painting personali ed pictures with E. Coli bacteria. There was a Pharmaceutical Chemist group, a Game Design group and a D Printing group as well.

Starting out the evening was a delicious meal of self-made paninis with a spicy chicken sauce, a side of mixed vegetables, and a dessert of

desserts). Afterwards, SHADs were able to meet Andrew Wong, a former SHAD and PA, and were given the opportunity to see and discuss his film, titled

10 day trip down the river of an Aboriginal reserve, experienced as a recreation of what First Nation ancestors would have experienced travelling the same route centuries ago. The video gave a new perspective for SHADs, as well as newfound respect for what the Indigenous had to go through. verall, the day was a blast. A typical day at the program, the experience and fun filled day adds to the SHAD experience.

Today was Fatimaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 17th birthday! We started the day with a photo scavenger hunt in groups, with activities to document such as singing

through geese-infested grass, proposing to Tina, and rapping with Peter. A surprising number of strangers agreed to take selfies with us, too. We then went to the studio for a mindfulness workshop. Among other things, we learned about stress, avoidance, and mindfulness itself.

the present. Some of us were so relaxed that we do ed off during the -minute session where we all closed our eyes. Next, we had another whole group session from Elissa on matrices.

Specifically, we learned matrix multiplication, which many of us had never done before. It seemed a little confusing at first, but it turned out to be simpler than it had initially appeared to be once we tried a few practice problems. We went to our workshops after this, and both of us had the anatomy workshop. Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theme was the cardiovascular system, so we got to examine human hearts and lungs to learn about pathologies, blood vessels, and more. Given that today was Wednesday, dinner was a special community supper. The kitchen served lasagna as the main dish, which was delicious, as usual. At the start of supper, we all got Fatima to stand up on a chair as we sang Happy Birthday in the customary Grebel style. We got to hear two student guest speakers, one of whom did their co-op in a medical lab and one who went on a 2-day canoe trip to the Arctic

cean. To top off the day, we all had cake for

snack. It was pretty funny watching Fatima pick which house went first based on the best pickup line

Today’s morning rec was unlike any activity we’d done so far. Arranged by Houses

faced off in epic rounds of the Hunger Games. Selected tributes were sent into the middle of an arena bordered by the rest of the SHADs. They carried flags tucked into the waistbands of their pants. These flags represented life and the aim was to steal the flags from any other tribute and become the last SHAD standing. After four rounds of intense battle, Jacob reigned supreme. After some project time, we attended our Whole Group Session where we further explored the world of matrices with Elissa. Today we went over the challenge problems presented from the last session and continued on to discovering the transposing and inverting of matrices as well as their applications to vectors. We later split up into our workshop groups to attend our third and final workshop sessions. After yet another delicious dinner in the caf, we went downstairs to Room 120 for our second session of rec today. We were told that this activity was going to be a sweat activity, and so many of us were pu

led

as to the fact that Room 120 is a lecture hall with practically no room for much active movement. As we settled down in the room, we were given blindfolds and were told put them on and relax. With lights off and the SHADs silent, Peter began to describe a story, telling us to imagine it in our heads. The story went along the lines of us walking in an aspen forest on a warm and sunny day and coming across a calm meadow. We sat down on the grass where we eventually encountered a ladybug climbing up a blade of grass. It was at this point of the story where we heard a loud scream. Shocked, we pulled off our blindfolds to see what was going on. The PAs were lined up, all dressed in black. This was the introduction to a game that was truly going to make us sweat Capture the Flag. Each of us were assigned random mission statements which gave us private information on our team - red or blue - and for two lucky SHADs, indicated the role of spy . Spies are given the opportunity to disguise themselves as their opposing team. After a long and hard fought battle between the two teams, the Blue team eventually rose to the top with their spy, Henry, capturing the Red team’s flag. The mastermind switched his red handkerchief with the red mitten, leaving the Red team unaware of their missing flag as the Blue team secured victory. Today was absolutely insane, both physically and intellectually. The intense rec activities, workshops, lectures, and hasty project time combined to make a super exciting but tiring day.

Today was the SHAD project conference day. The long nights and days spent working were finally going to be put to the test.The SHADs either didn’t sleep at all, or woke up running on less than

hours of sleep.After breakfast, the SHADs immediately made their way to the E 2

building to fine tune their projects and add finali ing details.The time for the final display of the SHADs’ projects was quickly arriving. The SHADs spent their short catch-up time getting dressed for the conference as well as gathering and organi ing the pieces of their projects together. After almost an hour of setting up, and anxiously making last minute touches to the designs, the conference began. All groups set up their posters in a circle formation, with an empty table in the middle to allow people to sit down and write their feedback on the presentations. In each group, few of the members were always present at the station while the rest circulated among other tables. There was a number of guests that visited the conference to observe the projects brought to life in the SHAD community. The conference ended with sighs of relief and many pictures taken to commemorate the wonderful event.

After the endless photos and what seemed like forever talking about SHAD projects, the SHADS made their way to dinner. Then the SHADs proceeded to the mystery rec. The rec was fairly unusual that day (if there is such thing as typical rec, of course). The PAs specified that the SHADs must arrive at 7:00 precisely, and not on SHAD time , unlike most of other events at the camp. This alone immediately drew everyone’s attention and sparked multiple theories among people involved. It turned out to be a Djembe drumming session led by a visiting instructor. The deep beat and rhythmic movements turned out to be strangely calming and therapeutic, momentarily turning the darkened room into an image of an ancient meeting place. After the exhilarating rec, SHADs unwinded at salon. SHADs worked on the next day’s coffee house decorations or listened to Tina’s round table about

After salon, many SHADs and staff enjoyed a couple games of root beer pong in the lounge before separating and going to bed. verall, it was a successful day at SHAD and full of interesting events and activities. The SHADs look forward to what the last week of SHAD has to offer.

Today was the first day we got to take our minds off the design project! We had the entire morning to work on our community projects. We had delicious chicken shawarmas for lunch!

It was probably the best lunch meal we had at Grebel so far. Following that, we walked to uptown Waterloo. It looked cute compared to Toronto. ou can hear the music from the nearby ja

festival, and feel the cold rain through your soaked clothes. We went shopping for

The Shads’ dedication had paid off Coffeehouse was an absolute blast. Bright casino themed streamers and live piano music left all the Shads mesmeri ed. There even was a photo booth with thematic props. In total there were seven different games including BlackJack and a Shad classic Apples to Apples. Brooke was the

hour after games, the performances begun. Starting off with Aaron’s multi-layered piano performance,’ everyone was enthralled by the pure talent of the performing Shads. Susan also gave her rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas’ leaving everyone in laughter. The gracious cafeteria staff provided scrumptious snacks such as brownies or homemade fruit punch. The perfect night came to a perfect end with the Shad community working harmoniously to clean up.

Although it was a Sunday, we woke up fairly early to find several SHADs in the cafeteria, working feverishly on the

onthbook or their workshop posters. We came to the reali ation,

this was going to be our last Sunday at Waterloo and therefore the beginning of our last week.

With mixed feelings, there was a bit of melancholy, a bit of excitement, but mostly a sense of urgency.

uickly, we got ready - barging into our teammates rooms, searching for scissors

and bristol board - in order to finish our workshop posters. The morning went by in a blink, and before we knew it, we marched to the Great Hall.

The first presentation was from the Anatomy Lab, which sheded light on the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. Despite the macabre nature of this special workshop, the SHADs involved had an enlightening experience. Â Next was D printing, with their interesting experience using SolidWorks to make pokeballs. Then, the game design workshop explained their journey to create the best game ever. Josh was proud of the game he made after the workshop and now has a new outlook on game design. The genetic engineers were next, led by iGE , who created art using E.coli and isolated DNA from biomaterials. Finally, The pharmaceutical workshop taught us how to make Tylenol.

Due to our extremely busy schedule, one poster project turned into another. Under the leadership of the

pen Day coordinators, Hanlin and Brooke, we now had to make eighteen

more posters for the event. After 2 more hours of uphill battle, the SHADs were called back to the Great Hall for the Grand synthesis and rd and final PA(L) Panel. As the day passed, we were reali ing more and more that SHAD is about to end. This reali ation uncovered a feeling of sadness that was put on the back burner because of the important and voluminous nature of the work. The grand synthesis was very inspiring and once again, the PAL Panel was informative, humorous and very engaging.

anagement. Javier has been living among the SHADs for over a week, and this was the first we were receiving a presentation from him. Fast, informative, and interesting, like his job title suggests - Javier showed us how companies today are using operational strategies to increase their productivity and value. Today was yet another jam-packed day, but the knowledge of this being one of last made it all the more special.

How might we...even begin to describe the end?

It’s hard to believe that just 26 days ago we didn’t know each other and came into campus as strangers. In a few days, our last week at SHAD will begin and although after breakfast on Friday everyone will leave for all parts of Canada, the memories we made at SHAD will stay with us forever.

The last week of SHAD will be filled with even more joy and laughter as we relax to celebrate the end of our Design project and cherish our last few days. There are plenty of activities and group sessions planned for our last week starting with a community outreach where we chose out of two options a local outreach project to explore. As well we will have even more guest speakers come this week and share with us their expertise and knowledge.

The highlight of the week will come to a finale on Open Day, where our families and friends will join us in the SHAD community as we show them a glimpse at what this month has given us. With a banquet and variety night to follow, the conclusion of SHAD will definitely be filled with excitement and a sense of satisfaction.
