be genuinely ready for it, not just trusting in the fact that they were Jews. He told them that a greater than he was coming – meaning Jesus. 2. In his baptism Jesus is identified by God (and John) as his only begotten son, and this is the beginning of his ministry. 3. Jesus was greater than John in that he was more than human, but God in human form. He had existed before John and was his creator. 4. The Holy Spirit came on the Lord Jesus Christ as a person, in complete fullness. This was not an anointing like that received by an Old Testament prophets, it was a complete residing of the Spirit of God in a man. This denotes the divinity of Christ – only the Son of God could receive the Spirit without limit. 5. Yes, I was baptised in water at the age of seventeen in the church where I became a Christian. The pastor asked me to confess publicly that I believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour with all my heart, and then he immersed me in the pool of water, baptising me “in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”.

Chapter 4 1. The devil tempted Jesus’ divinity; insinuating that he was not God’s Son whilst asking him to demonstrate that he was God’s Son. He tempted him to satisfy his hunger by supernaturally producing bread, to tempt God by leaping off the temple, and to be unfaithful to God by worshipping him (Satan) in return for power and fame. 2. On each occasion Jesus responded to the temptation by quoting and obeying the word of God, submitting to God’s revealed will and resisting the devil. 3. A disciple is someone who learns what to do from a master, a bit like an apprentice. Only if they first followed Jesus could they learn his ways and so become like him to share his ministry of reaching the lost.
