Keratoconus Treatment in Ayurveda - New Hope for Progressive Keratoconus Patients A number of visual problems like blurred or double vision, photosensitivity or nearsightedness could mean a case of keratoconus. Keratoconus is a bulging of the cornea, i.e. the outer lens of the eye which helps us see, into a cone-like structure. This happens when the collagen, which holds the cornea tightly in place, becomes weak. Collagens in the eye, which support the cornea, are protected from the harmful byproducts that it creates, by certain antioxidants. A decrease in the level of such protective anti-oxidants, affects the proper functioning of the collagen fibers, ultimately affecting the cornea. It is genetic to a great extent and is usually noticed in youngsters who are hitting puberty or in their late teens. Usually, a visit to the ophthalmologist would include a ‘corneal topography’, which helps in the analysis of the cornea. New eyeglasses or contact lenses are usually provided on the basis of the analysis. Other treatments include ‘cornea collagen crosslinking’, which prevents worsening by placing an implant below the cornea’s surface to avoid the cone-shaped bulging. In the most extreme cases, if none of the other treatments work, a cornea transplant may be performed. However, effective keratoconus Treatment in Ayurveda can give hope to patients of keratoconus.
