Property of Division Property of Division Division in mathematics is the process of separating a number element into parts. Division is taught in primary school, soon after the students become comfortable with addition and subtraction. Division and its properties are considered part of the foundation for mathematics. Mastery of them is required before going on to more heady concepts of algebra, calculus and statistics. The division properties are used to define the limits of the division process. When division is signified by the division bar, then the order in which we multiply or divide does not matter. We may either divide first or multiply first. It is more skillful however to divide first, because we then have smaller numbers to multiply. Inverse Property :- The entire division process is the inverse property at work. Inverse property is the undoing of a math concept, and division is the undoing of multiplication. Taking the multiplication equation apart and inverting elements on either side of the equals sign produces a division problem. The inverse property of division is used in solving equations by undoing the multiplication included in the equation. Division is also referred to as the multiplicative inverse. Zero Property ;- One of the first things that kids learn is a number divided by zero is zero. This is the zero property. It used to describe a number's inability to be divided by zero or nothing. Identity Property Like the zero property, the identity property defines a basic tenant of division, and one of the first concepts learned in primary school. The identity property states that a number divided by one results in that number, or five divided by one is five. Inversely, a number divided by the same number equals one. The number one is considered an identity element in mathematics because of how it works in multiplication and division. Later in the course of mathematics study, the identity property helps solve lengthy equations through cancellation and the reciprocal property. Negation Property When dividing integers, one negative number within the equation will create a negative result. For example, four divided by negative two equals negative two. This property also states that two negative numbers within an equation lead to a positive result, as the negative numbers cancel one another out.
