Advanced Studio: RFP - Adaptive Reuse of the Kingsbridge Armory

The program adapted to this NYC Historical Landmark building seeks to activate Food Production Industry as a social and economic change tool. Inspired by the local community need for a healthier lifestyle.

The food production infrastructure displays itself and its activities to local upcoming generations to motivate them into seeking career opportunities in the Urban Farming and Food Production Industry. At the same time, for a unique building like this, a powerful meandering form of architecture takes the form of an elevated green space that will attract tourists and locals while generating a series of different spaces that vary on their nature and intimacy by breaking down the massiveness of the armory.

Responding to the potential of such a large space, the armory displays a level of interaction in between a rational production-focus plan layout for its vertical farming installations, and this multi-level structure of elevated green space that interconnects the most important points of the building . Moreover, the renovated interior head house will hosts local business and activate the ground level according the community needs such as performance, health and gathering.

The largest Armory in the world will house a unique and diverse program focused on the community of the Bronx, their economic, educational and social development.

1st Place - Under The Stair Case SSA Competition

$ 5,000 Awarded towards construction

THE WALL is the response to a design competition promoted by The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture Dean Marta Gutman during the end of my 3rd year in the program. The competition was open to every student from the under-grad and grad programs at SSA. The competition only restrictions were sticking to a budget of $5,000 and do not remove the existing stainless steel wire mesh.

In collaboration with Rodrigo Montano, I submitted a schematic design proposal that intended to activate this unconventional space into a dynamic canvas to display students’ work and give them and their work more exposure within the Spitzer Community while increasing our networking platform. Its modular design allows the exhibit to change every semester.

During the final year of my B-Arch program, I co-led the construction process of The Wall along with my former professor, Christian Volkmann. I presented him with the idea of this being an opportunity to gain hands-on experience for myself and my peers at SSA. We concluded the project by December of 2023, and now The Wall is a permanent gallery for students’ work located in the lobby of the SSA building greeting every person who enters the building.

Studio VI: Integration - A Multipurpose Special Events Center

This project serves as a multi-purpose urban complex that offers recreational, educational, and cultural development spaces for the City College Students and the Harlem community.

By understanding the complexity of its site, our project substitutes the existing parking lot with a project that embraces the location of this site and celebrates the transition between the north and south of the CCNY campus.

Context analysis revealed the geometry and character of the surrounding building fabric and understood the dramatic change from organic spaces on the southern campus to more orthogonal and rational spaces on the northern campus. The existing condition of this site acts more as a division in the big picture of the CCNY campus; opposite to this, Harlem Civic Center, acts as a symbolic bridge that welcomes all the flow of people coming from the south campus while simultaneously offering multiple points of access to the surrounding community. This ease of access is supported by the versatility of these spaces, which support the diversity of the program.

A series of frames is mounted to the rock, establishing an intimate spatial relationship and circulation sequence that begins with a sense of enclosure. From narrow to broad, this spatial sequence leads to an interior dual-dimension, where detail and material reflects a distinct variation of usage according to the frames’ rhythm. In experiential qualities, the facades harmoniously express instances of seeing and being seen, shifts between transparent and translucent, as an articulation of light. Inspired by the architectural promenade, the project aims to narrate a progressive itinerary within, and above all, to accentuate this feature from the exterior.

Professor:

With the exploration of parametric design tools in order to iterate our results in form finding exercises. The design of a parametric pavilion that would adapt to an irregular surface or landscape was the main driver of this project. Also, the creation of meaningful spaces that support human interaction and community practices were crucial features. The human-centric scale of a shape that is not common of our contemporary architecture is the form finding exploration challenge.
