Preface Dear readers, The work collection is a portfolio of architectural and urban-planning designs of mine, which I’d collected to publish, although many of them had already been presented to the public in independent issue. This document gathers most of the projects, which arose in the last time period and proclaim about the theoretical and design approach to certain assignment. Each of the projects brings a special experience to me and that is why, I try hard to describe the circumstances of the project assignment, which is to be read on the front page of each of them. Designing process is for me a possibility to break out as a manifestation or break within the ranges of reality. The position which I try to follow belong to both ways - meaning to be at first an architect, who is able to construct his projects and secondly an architect not forgetting about more space for self-realization which is offered by architecture and urban design. And which way did I use for particular project? - That’s something to be uncovered by yourselves. The architectonic (the study of architectural structure), space planning and research in the architectural proceedings and means of geographic accessibility analyses, space syntax, social study, the theory of activities combined with the conceptual approach in the urban-design (Bill Hillier, Jan Jehlík) have been the main designing tools for seeking the optimal volume and shape in individual assignments. The projects are listed according the size and amount of effort which has been requested to reach the result. I wish, that flipping of these pages, will bring you an interest about getting to know about an approach of another architect or at very least a good time. Acknowledgements I would like to thank at first to God and to my wife Tetiana for the support and patience, that the projects and their collection required. I also would like to thank to the professional, who influenced me as Prof. Ivan Ruller, Prof. Vladimír Šlapeta, Prof. Marc Dubois, March. Patrick Lints, Doc. Ivan Gürtler, Doc. Petr Hrůša, MArch. Paul de Ruiter, MArch Wim Oers and hundreds of others whom I ever met on professional field. matej ferenc

development of black meadow Pronouncing the word “Ostrava” might recall not only to the native Czech public, but also to the public of great agglomeration of Europe a mining city, which was a generator of the economy of former Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic. The clusters of industrial chimneys, glowing halls, bulk of fresh greenery, huge institutions, endless residential parts and few tens kilometre long radius of illuminating street lights are characteristics of city of Ostrava from the view from artificial hill Ema, steaming a warm sulphur- yellow gas from its cavities into the air. Numerous brownfields and blackfields need to be revitalized to stop further expansion of the city, yet to improve the level of the civic equipment and the living conditions of the public. One of those brownfields is also a territory of “Black Meadow”, which is situated right in the city centre in beautiful urban situation, which generates the urban scheme for its development. The program of the development of Black Meadow is strictly bound with the aim of seeking new identity for Ostrava, which has to converse from its former mining history. The city has to become the point of education, development and culture. The education and culture domain have been chosen by the municipal summit as the program for Black Meadow. The theory for building up the concept is the theory of the actions. (meaning, what kind of human activities shall take place within the program area) From cultural point of view, shall the project offer the possibilities of visiting the concerts of philharmonic orchestra, expositions of fine arts and regional interventions and educating in the educational centre in central Ostrava. This project is presented in two alternative designs, where first of them approaches to the complex of the philharmonic orchestra using the underground spaces left by mines and the second one represents a ground based solution. Consultation team: MA Ivan Gürtler, MA Josef Kiszka, MA Kamil Mojžíšek, MA Aleš Student and municipality of city of Ostrava

Centre of Carpathian Region CCR The project Centre of Carpathian Region (CCR) comes up from the Regional Policy of European Commission of EU. Carpathian Region is considered in the eastern part of carpathian bow spreading on the particular territory of Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Romania Hungary, which have been throughout the history collaborating countries from many points of view. Although the language difference is apparent in the region, it is really common that nations mix with each other and most of the people are bilingual or even trilingual. It can be said, that the culture of this region is rather the same and can be also spotted, that it differs from the tradition at the west part of the carpatian bow. This investigation has grounded a concept of founding a CCR which would not only present the history of carpathian culture, which is very wide, but also support the further development of education, culture and regional policy. City of Košice appears to be the geographical centre of the region, yet its largest metropolis with strongest industrial aspect. The profile of the city is very similar to Ostrava, in sense of blackfields and brownfields. Kosice dispose with sufficient area behind the river of Hornád, which separates the city from its former industrial areas, which shall be revitalised. This issue and the concept of adding the CCR behind the river opens new century of the development of the city, where the contemporary dense city on west side of the river can broke into the free areas. The intention of placing the necklace with the pearls of certain functional use provides the program of urban development of east side of Hornád. Although this project provides the overall scheme for the area, its urban part deepened into detail only on its norther part - Magnezitka. This area is specific brownfield with the intention of the city to realize the industrial and logistic area within. Huge boxes in the city have unfortunately been the solution in the past decades of certain post-socialistic cities. To allow both economical and cultural development, yet protecting the land against further city expansion, we can build both on the same plot in independent layers. It might be today utopia but the way of tomorrow. Consultancy: MA Ivan Gürtler, MA Martin Drahovský

town of New Kurim Town of New Kurim, or by other words the town for 10 000 inhabitans is situated on the developmental area of Kurim, which appears to be new rapidly growing city with growing work-possibilities in region of Moravia, 14 km away from its metropolis Brno. Other issue for residential growth of Kurim is the reality market in metropolis of Moravia, which is rather height. Plenty of people seek their new homes in more spacious, more comfortable and cheaper villages next to Brno, which has been considered as a good opportunity for Kurim. The topology of the ground and its infrastructure, its connection to the old town of Kurim and the north-east orientation became very suitable conditions for the development, which is the strategy of the city. The research of the locality revealed, that the northern part of the ground was a former lake in the empire history. Living next to the lake or city centre at the lake is rather big rarity in moravian cities, although the water element is fortunately quite common. The centre of the town, which is proposed for cultural, shopping and educational purposes is divided into two parts by the municipal house, where one of them is considered as a closed square and the second one as the open waterfront. Moravia is well know as the region with good cycling infrastructure, where this type of leisure activity is very famous. This infrastructure has been applied into the design. The conceptual scheme gathers in the middle part of the composition the building of 4-6 floors, which serve to the civic equipment for the inhabitants and the visitors of the city. The traffic scheme was formed around the central part into the U-form traffic backbone, in order to lower the noise in the city and to provide good feasibility of the residential parts. The dwelling in the project is designed in various types. The blocks of flats in the staircase layout of 3-4 floors are mixed with the concept of row-houses and independent dwelling. The residential parts of the city are separated from traffic infrastructure by the parks with intensive greenery.

New ambitions of Moravian-Silesian region with its capital Ostrava, laying on the north-east edge of Czech Republic at the border with Poland and Slovakia is to converse from the industrial prime sector to the education, research and cultural range. Due to this fact has the construction of philharmonic hall been very hot topic for last few years. It may be said, that Czech Republic with its rich musical history suffers a lack of concert halls. Many of them are placed within other building built for different purposes and many of them are a bit too small. The biggest concert hall of Rudolfinum in Prague does not even offer dozen of hundreds seats for the visitors. The assignment for this project is the great concert hall for 1200 spectators, a small hall for 200 of them, complete background for philharmonic orchestra of 120 musicians, choir of 80 members, 40 member children choir, pipe organ of around 5000 pipes, background for hosting ensemble, libresso, mediathek, restaurant underground parking etc.

concert hall Ostrava

The building of the concert hall is situated on available plot in between building blocks of 16m height. Its north-east facade is faced to the philharmonic square with direct link to the central Ostravas square. The approach of the architectural design comes from the need to popularize this type of cultural activity. As the concert hall is by the public considered as higher civic equipment, its main corso (foyer) is lifted up against the ground level in about 7 metres. This corso is standing on black granite plinth and the visitors access to it through the staircase in the north edge of the building. Two halls of the Moravian-Silesian philharmonia, as named the project are based on the foyer, and shall be maximally interlaced with the open public in both directions. The cultural living style shall so become more accessible for wide public of the city, region, and the country. The glass envelope, and light roof structure above the foyer aim to physically disappear and their purpose is to arrange appropriate quality of the interior throughout the year. The equipment of the foyer, bars, clubs, terrace, restaurant, libresso, mediathek, is situated on the second floor, where is the main platform of the foyer, or in the north wing of the building. The interior of the main concert hall is proposed with the hydraulic centrally positioned orchestra, with the seats around it, which can be removable, what makes the hall multifunctional. A modern concert hall – great hall enables to regulate its volume, to be suitable for providing good sound effect in various scales of the orchestra or even an input of the pipe organ. Consultations: program: MA Ivan Gürtler, MA Ivan Drobniak, detail: Prof. Ivan Ruller, acoustics: Ing. Jiří Vaverka, structural design: Ing. Petr Suchánek and other technicians for traffic layout and fire-safety solution.

London City Airport London City airport is a unique passenger airport, which is located right in the City of London on the Docklands London Borough. The main clientele of this institution are small charter or business flights of small and middle range. Most of the aircrafts, except large passenger ones are allowed able to land in very squeezed urban environment on only approximately 2km long runway. Nevertheless, this airport acts an crucial role for the business, as the great and world-wide know towers of financial centre of Canary Wharf are situated right on next curve of the river Themes. The connection to the city centre is also very good, the DLR (Dockland Railway) riches the subway station Bank and is only few stops far from it. The estimation and analyses of the use of the airport is very promising and the reconstruction and redesigning of the airport is expected. Main approach to the refurbishment of this transport facility is to make the layout of the gate-terminal flexible and to develop an extendable system, which would be adaptable to the needs in certain time period. Structural system of the terminal is designed as the umbrellas, which are unified to be able do array in the double row. The glass facade of the system uses also few modules of glass panels to be installed in case of need. Terminal can be equipped with the second layer - first floor, which can serve as a resting or additional shopping (duty free) area. Current building of the airport hall is a bit too small to accommodate other supplementary function. New structure based on 2D hexagonal fractals and hexagonal pyramids offers the spaces for shopping, eating, watching movies. Many of the huge meetings can take place in the new congress hall, which is positioned on top of the structure from the side of Docklands. Collaboration with: Denisa Šebová, Mai Lan Chi, consultancy: LCA airport, Brussel airport, Patrick Lints, Wim Oers

house on the riverbank Prerov The proposal of the apartment house from urban point of view is keeping the height of the neighbouring building (sport facility Sokol) and offers to the waterfront a corner townhouse. The edge of the corner shifts to the inside of the plot to allow the pavement expansion what would create an outside terrace for the café to be used during mild weather conditions. The building is a barrier between the outer public space and the inner semi-public which is risen one floor against the street level. The architectural proposal is based on a principle of a magnificent view from the plot on the riverbed with the panorama of the centre of the town Prerov. This topic has become the main tool for the organizing of the space plan. Secondly, the large loggias oriented to the city are swapping in different floors, what makes the interlacing effect on the facade. The spaces are separated into three functions. The parking beneath the ground, the civic equipment (shops, pub, café, retail) on the ground floor and the flats set above the shops level. The apartments are accessible from common inner yard on the 1st floor by means of the porches. The material solution uses on most of the facade a horizontal wooden plank cladding. The loggias and other interfacing wall planes are finished by fine finish plaster in light gray colour. The ground floor is designed with most of the glass surfaces from bent glass, shaped in the way creating an entering bays to the shops, snack bars, and cake shop at the corner of the house. Inside the layout of the ground floor are inserted two minor kiosks, which can serve for small shop or offering the services. The background for the customers is also fitted in within the same volume. The layout schema of the apartments is oriented to the south-east with its living room. An important issue of entering is revealing the view through the glass facade of the for-room through the space of loggia. Standard of the flats is based on 2-3 room layout of various sizes.

house on the old-town wall The plot is to be found in the city centre of Brno. It is situated where the fortification wall had been built and then demolished by Napoleon’s army. The street Novobranská (New-gate street) used to be the route along the fortress and it remains still today. The consequence of the history are the narrow streets and the shallow interiors of the houses . The length of the house is 41 meters with the shallow typology of 9 meters. The main idea of the house is to build an interconnected spatial scheme, which would accommodate three different kinds of fine arts - drawing & painting, short movies, sculpture and yet find the space for the apartments. Ground floor enables the access to the building for inhabitants, public, artists, access to the garage. One studio for sculptors and another for amateur animators, the space for buggies and garbage treatment are placed on the same floor as well. The lift for the cars accesses a two-layer garage by its automotive drive. First floor includes the studio for drawing and painting and one outdoor studio which is designed for the presentation of work done in this leisure facility of the building. The levels from second floor up to the roof are designed for dwelling. The dwelling units are considered as studios or smaller flats for shorttime living. Light shafts are used to lead the light into the flats through the building. Wide shafts are cutting the floors from the 2nd floor to the roof and the caps of the shafts are raised above the roof level to create the elements of accessible roof garden. This system provides specific interior light atmosphere, as the introducing daylight comes into the building via green glasshouse.

museum of metropolitan Lavre Metropolitan Lavre, a metropolitan of Russian Orthodox Church abroad had been born in village in eastern Slovakia - Ladomírová, which used to be a famous book-print orthodox monastery destroyed in world war two. Although the brothers from the monastery left the location, the spirit of the place remains on the low hill still today. Metropolitan Lavre became a very important person in the history of Orthodox Church. The intention of the municipal house of the village is to return the memory of the life of monastery and of the brotherhood of St. Job from Pochaev as well as the memory about metropolitan Lavre. Many of the exhibits have already been gathered and wanted to be presented to the public. Due to this reason a small-scale exhibition facility has been designed, which is presented in two alternative designs according the program. The rough conceptual scheme uses the position of the platform, where previously stood a wing of the monastery book-print. The aspect of genius locci is very strong on this place. The original stone staircase is still existing and it creates a traditional access (not a main entrance) which lead the visitors into the central courtyard in the alternative one, which accesses an exposition hall on south side and the facility and media room on the north side. This alternative keeps approximately the length, width and height of the original structure. The second alternative is smaller and works from the view from the staircase a bit differently. We are watching on a blank sandstone wall, what forces us to think about the place and its destiny. Half of the exhibition is focused on the prints and fotos from the printing history and the history of the brotherhood in narrow corridor hall. The central exhibition space illuminated from above is directed for the exibition of 3D or 2D elements, which requires bigger distance for their observation. As the building is proposed next the temple, its background is equipped with the storages and the toilets for the visitors of the area.

vila house on the countryside This project is one of the project from the collaboration with Dutch architect Paul de Ruiter. The plot is situated on the flat country environment of Nord Holland, in the village Broek in Waterland and is the ownership of a private client, which aims to proceed with an change of the original wooden house by a new country-side villa. The volumetric study keeps the dimension according the character of the surrounding nature, which means, the house is rather wide and low. The pitched roof schema keeps the principle of the old Dutch farmer house. The volume of the house is split by a glasshouse module (winter garden) and thus it strictly defines the day- and the nigh-zone of villa. The day part of the house serve at first as an expanded living room with the library, bar, kitchen and the dining corner. The living room accesses the front loggia, which is serve as a resting area with direct connection to the front yard and as the exterior dining room as well. The facade system from wooden sunblinds, which are foldable or sliding in order to regulate the impact of the sunlight. The night part of the house is composed from one master bedroom and one bedroom for the visitors. Both of the bedrooms are connected to bathroom island or to a shower corner accessible direct from the space of the bedroom. The rear module of the house is proposed as a wine cellar including the technology for proper way of storing the wine. Back facade is designed from glass profiles profilit, in order to drag the ambient glass into the cellar while preventing sharp visibility. The material solution comes from the pallet of nature material. Most of the villa-house is designed from soft spruce lacquered wood, in order to resist unpleasant weather conditions. The material of the roof is designed as the coloured titane-zinc metal plate in the anthracite gray colour swatch. The glazing system, including the glass of the glasshouse is designed as a frameless structure with black mastic application. The construction of the floor of the terraces is also designed from wooden planks.

detached family house The project of detached family house found its place in the valley of the mount Galmus at the edge of the built-up area of a village on the East Side (meaning eastern Slovakia). The environment of the house is very fresh, full of greenery and the range of the forest begins right beyond the fence. The proportion of the parcel of the shape of trapeze is around 25 metres wide in the base, 8m wide on the top and its total length is approximately 80m. First third of the ground is rather planar and very suitable for founding the structure of the village straw shed house. The urban schema of the village can be generally described as the bulk of two types of the houses, which one of them is a typical eastern Slovak pitched roof house of single-tract layout or its abbreviation base on the squarish layout with pyramid roof and the private agricultural (ordinary agricultural) sheds built from bricks: The dimensions of this type of structure are from 8 metres in width up-to 20 or even more metres in length. The conceptual approach is to keep the structure of the rural environment in the same schema. Although the form of the house relates to the former shed concepts and acts to be very modest from the exterior point of view, its internal layout is rather spacious, with great rooms with the aim of reaching certain level of flexibility, even a ability of the refurbishment into two-generation house. As the size of the floor plan is rather big and the house is situated on higher amplitude, the classical form of the pitched roof of the shed building of 40,5° was pushed down up to 22,5°. The most of the interior is made up traditional material as chipped timber, chalk paint, wooden planks and stone and thus it keeps the interior atmosphere related to the view into the forest through every window. The project is currently permitted and the construction works have already begun.

detatched family house The concept of creating a new building volume has risen from the traditional village architecture with overall inclination of the pitched roof of 40°30’, which used to be applied on the buildings of various typology and scale. The house is composed from three volumes, where main of them reaching the street is the original building. The roof is lifted up to create the space for the bedrooms under the it. The space in the ground floor has been joined together into one dining room with kitchen to provide an interior relation to the outer volume of monochromatic appearance. The second volume is the repetition of the first one shifted to the left which includes the entrance and the common area for the children beneath the roof. The third volume is a new wing in the perpendicular direction including the living room linked to the kitchen in the old wing. In the underground floor is placed a space of the garage with the workshop room, technical room, laundry and small area for resting in the basement’s atmosphere. The first floor is accessible from bellow by a staircase, which is positioned not in the usual location in such a type of the floor plan. The round U form staircase is well accessible from the dining room and the living room at it creates an access to the master bedroom and two more other rooms designed for the children. The material solution uses the a light warm gray paint in maximal scope, while all the locksmith- elements are prefabricated from titane-zinc coated steel. The same material solution is proposed for the for the roofing material.

a memorial Slovak Erzberg is well know due to the long-lasting mining history, during which several metals as iron, copper, plumb, aluminium, silver or even gold have been extracted for further production. The Mines of Slovinky present the history of copper - ore gaining, which goes into the 13th century. Last period of mining in this region as been executed by the company Železorudné bane Slovinky, which was in charge from 1954 till 1993, when the last mining cart has left the darkness of the Erzberg. This heavy work required during the last period a lot of sacrificed lives. The Coalition of minors of Slovinky aimed to construct a monument to remind the memory of the citizens, who laid their lives in order to feed their families. The place, which has been chosen for the construction of this monument spreads in the central park in between two memorials of victims of world war one and world war two, which are made from white travertine. The topology of the place has been modified and a new memorial has been positioned a bit beyond the front line of the white monuments lifted up a bit on by a small dumped hill. The material solution uses the means of contrast of a black granite against the travertine, in order not to lower the importance of original boards from world wars, yet not to sink the sense of a new one. Frontal relief of the board comes from the pattern of the protection grid of the mine shaft, which was the geometry, which a miner saw every day on the route down to his place of work. The filling of the names and symbols uses a soft poured plumb, which can make the stains on the monument after certain time, as the highly mineralized water makes the stains on every structure in nowadays no longer accessible labyrinth of underground tunnels.

river tribunes brno The aspect of water is in the city of Brno not used at all. The riverbank is to deep and wide, although a protective water reservoir is built at the edge of the city (still feasible by tram line), a thus the water depth is usually not bigger than 50cm. The project is a part of the program called City interventions founded by architects Valo and Sadovský, and its focused on the water domain as such. The main aim is to bring more of social importance to the flowing water and the get it attractive for the public. At the first stage, the river is too unaccessible and almost invisible from the point of view of the person sitting on the river promenade, which is not really often, but possible activity. Few location on the water lane have been pointed out within central Brno, with the biggest concentration of people, where the tribunes could be installed. The tribunes shall create the space for resting, reading, fishing, and are equipped with a flower bets, to bring more life and freshness to the solid walls of riverbank. Other enhancement of the river is to create a lane for boaters, with sufficient depth of water for descending the flow, which is also a very favourite activity of Czech nation. The tribunes can then serve to the boaters as the resting platforms and could so generate other type of infrastructure, but at first, it will show to the public that the river is their and full of life.

lazyk garden Lazyk hill - a part of a magnificent topology of Volovské vrchy on the East Side has been considered as a most suitable plot for accommodating a program of client. Modest west slope with its altitude offers a beautiful view on the village and neighbouring nature which is considered as a priority No. 1 for the design of the garden, which is the aim of this project. The position of the entrance door and detached garage both with the world side plot orientation kept the assignment of the design. Looking for correct path for entering the plot and the house, which would produce to the entering person certain experience, and seeking for effective layout for saving the space of the garden, created the system of light bow with steps and ramp in U form. The program of the design required connection to the fixed entrance, locating of the garden house with its exterior and interior part, interlacing of the circulation system with the position of the garden water source, terraces of the house, planting beds, back arbour and storage of the wood in logical scheme. The ring placed in the front yard, which connects the entrance with the garden house position, water source and ramp both with the lawn accommodated within the ring are pretty used by the children of the client for daily stretching. The level of the terraces at the house is merged to the level of the internal floor and serve as a exterior dinning room on the southwest side. The architectural part of the design applies a calm material palette, as the palette of the neighbouring nature is always multifarious. Entering person accesses the plot through the bent tunnel, which is created by the ring of the front yard. This part of the experience is very important and attempts to calm down the senses of the visitor, to get him prepared for new perceptions. The path lead to the steps beyond the bow, where the visitor is standing in between two light gray walls, watching on the white pebble steps with the magnificent view to the Hrbok hill, with no visual input of the civilisation.

detached house - interior The assignment of this work has been defined by a private owner of a detached house in one of the villages in eastern Slovakia. Interior schema and main limits of the volumetric definition of the house had already been designated by finished house-shell. Main attention was paid on the setup of the paralaxe of entering person in the daily-part of the house. Alignment of the wall and the chimney is reached by means of wavy shelve, which represents a half partition in between the living room, dinning corner and kitchen. A bar desk with bar-chairs is set as the interface between aforementioned two spaces. The pipes work as the rein- forcing elements for supporting, handles for opening the cupboards, drawers. They function as the cornices to hang the curtains, or just to make a distance from warm chimney or to dry the towels. Material solution is merged with the most arising wood in the attitude of the village - the breech wood. Final finishing is varnished in natural light or stained with dark brown penetration and lacquered.

the stove My contact with Mr. Oldřich Rujbr, one of the authors of Brno Astronomic Clock has opened to me the route to world of iron. In the very beginning of industrial revolution played this material an fundamental role. Former smithery had been enhanced with greatscale pouring of the iron, which enabled an unlimited spreading of the iron products within the market. The stream of Arch & Crafts based in that period led to further inspiring of industrial design. In spite of the fact, that those ages are already long behind us, the main characteristics of iron as good fire-resistance and form-adaptivity remain. The prototype of stove is designed for interior use as the two wall stove with closed fireplace and the ash falloff tank. The thorns sticking out from the body are clung on the volume of the fireplace and become the stream bars for the warm waves running from the fire. The void between two-layer wall of 32mm serves as the supplementary heat exchanger for the ambient air ascending through the holes in the base of the interior element. This void can be easily filled-up by the fire clay powder, to improve the long lasting effect of emission of the heat. Mechanics opening the gabs in the front door and ash door is designed to regulate the heat and the flame. Both of these as well as the chimney flap are fully mechanical an cleanable by normal procedures. The stove with the dimensions 533x530x905mm of nominal performance 6kW weighs 173kg without the fire-clay filling. This product is designed to be transported in decomposed condition and prepared to be easy assembled, installed and operated. The final finish of the stove is designed in the traditional smithery black.
