"Profundidad de campo" es un programa destinado a la producción, la muestra y el estudio de la práctica audiovisual contemporánea.

El objetivo de "Profundidad de campo" es ofrecer una visión – en profundidad–, del trabajo de artistas del medio audiovisual (aquellos que desarrollan su obra en formato video, los que dialogan con el cine y con otros medios o de aquellos que proponen instalaciones con imágenes en movimiento de un amplio rango).

Mediante la presentación de las obras de estos creadores, tanto de trayectoria reconocida como emergente, este programa pretende contribuir a generar un espacio continuo para el diálogo, en el que las diferentes propuestas de los artistas, se complementen y contribuyan a un mejor entendimiento de este medio.

El primer ciclo de "Profundidad de campo" aborda el tema de la violencia con la muestra y el acercamiento a la obra de Meiro Koizumi y María Ruido. Dos artistas cuya producción indaga, desde diferentes ángulos y lenguajes artísticos, la violencia entendida como la fuerza que impregna tanto el ámbito íntimo de los cuerpos como el público de la historia.

Meiro Koizumi nació en Gunma, Japón, en 1976. En la actualidad vive y trabaja en Yokohama, Japón. Ha estudiado en la International Christian University de Tokio (1996-1999), el Chelsea College of Art and Design de Londres (1999-2002) y la Rijksakademie van Beeldend Kunsten de Amsterdam (20052006). Entre sus exposiciones individuales destacan las celebradas en el Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo de México (2015), el Museum of Modern Art de Nueva York (2013), el Art Space de Sídney (2011) y el Mori Art Museum de Tokio (2009). Koizumi ha presentado su obra en las bienales de Shanghai (2018), Montreal (2016), la de Escultura de Shenzhen (2014), de Liverpool (2010) y la Trienal de Aichi (2010) y ha participado en otras muestras colectivas en Museo Nacional de Osaka (2018), la Tate Modern (2007 y 2013) y el Barbican Centre de Londres (2002). www.meirokoizumi.com

Campos de batalla [Battlelands], 2018

Los trabajos de Meiro Koizumi (Gunma, Japón 1976) examinan una amplia serie de temas fundamentales en la configuración de la sociedad contemporánea, especialmente los relativos a las dinámicas de poder, el conflicto entre el sentido del deber y el deseo y dónde están los límites entre el ámbito de lo público y de lo privado.

Mediante la elección de sus personajes, la elaboración meticulosa de los guiones y la puesta en escena, las obras de Koizumi recrean situaciones de extrema tensión emocional, en las que a menudo lo dramático y lo cruel presentan aspectos cómicos. El artista manipula a sus personajes para provocar en ellos reacciones de alta carga emotiva que interpelan al espectador y le provocan una profunda incomodidad. De este modo Koizumi revela el desamparo y la fragilidad de la psique humana cuando el interés del individuo particular entra en conflicto con el interés colectivo, y pone en evidencia las convenciones y prejuicios de la sociedad actual.

Algunas de las obras más impactantes de Koizumi toman su país natal como laboratorio para el análisis de conflictos que en realidad son universales, y pueden ser entendidas como un comentario sobre el modo en el que los traumas del pasado histórico son determinantes en la configuración política del presente y cómo, desde este presente, se va construyendo una historia nacional colectiva que se legitima en esos recuerdos y en la pervivencia del dolor.

Pero en su último trabajo y obra central de este programa, Campos de batalla [Battlelands], 2018, el escenario no es Japón sino los Estados Unidos, y más concretamente el entorno y los recuerdos de siete veteranos de la guerra de Iraq y Afganistán. Son ellos quienes van relatando en primera persona las experiencias más violentas y dolorosas que vivieron durante su participación en estos conflictos bélicos, mientras graban paisajes y escenas banales de su vida cotidiana.

Al poner de relieve la brutal contradicción entre estas imágenes del presente apacible y sus testimonios del pasado, Koizumi reflexiona sobre cómo los recuerdos traumáticos de la guerra permean de forma inevitable el ámbito más cotidiano, íntimo y actual de sus personajes. Mientras al mismo tiempo, y al ser ellos mismos los encargados de capturar esas imágenes con el movimiento de sus propios cuerpos, se insinúa el deseo de que la iconografía de esa guerra pasada pudiera llegar a ser sustituida por la de los “campos de batalla” de su vida presente.

Los efectos de la guerra y la idea del conflicto, personificada en la figura del soldado, son precisamente los ejes temáticos que definen la selección de obras que aquí se presentan y dos de los temas principales que este artista ha abordado de forma crítica en otros trabajos.

Así, en Retrato de un joven samurái [Portrait of a Young Samurai], 2009, un actor vestido con un uniforme de piloto de aviación de la segunda guerra mundial es obligado a expresar repetidamente y cada vez con más intensidad lo que él denomina el “espíritu del samurái” mientras escenifica con patetismo la despedida de sus padres en la madrugada en la que va a sacrificarse por la patria en una misión suicida. Esta escena progresa del llanto histérico hasta la desolación, para ser, finalmente, el propio Koizumi quien, simulando la voz desesperada de la madre del kamikaze, interrumpe su discurso para suplicarle que no acabe con su vida.

Esta escena, buen ejemplo de esa particular combinación de lo cómico y lo cruel, tantas veces presente en la obra de este artista, sitúa la idea del autosacrificio como la representación máxima del sentimentalismo patriótico que tan a menudo es difundido por el cine y la televisión mediante mensajes emotivos y simplistas, en la revisión constante de la actuación de Japón en la guerra.

En dos trabajos posteriores, Donde el silencio falla (Doble proyección #1) [Where Silence Fails (Double Projection #1)], 2013 y Palabras capturadas [Trapped Words], 2015, Koizumi recurre a los testimonios directos de dos personas que vivieron, en momentos de sus vidas muy diferentes, la experiencia de la guerra en Japón.

En Donde el silencio falla (Doble proyección #1) [Where Silence Fails (Double Projection #1)], 2013, el protagonista es el señor Itazu, un piloto kamikaze que sobrevivió a la misión de inmolarse durante la defensa de Okinawa en 1945, a causa de un fallo técnico en su avión. Supuestamente para los pilotos kamikazes la muerte es el acto sublime del honor, y el incumplimiento de esta misión, su máxima vergüenza. Quien sobrevive siente culpabilidad por aquellos compañeros que cumplieron con éxito y gloria su hazaña kamikaze, como el señor Ashida, compañero de Itazu quien precisamente murió en aquella ocasión, y a quien éste interpreta en el video para mantener con él una conversación ficticia. Un doble monólogo de imágenes solapadas, gracias al cual el señor Itazu, como médium, parece haber conseguido finalmente el perdón por el fracaso de su gesta.

En el segundo vídeo, Palabras capturadas [Trapped Words], 2015, el señor Harada explica cómo sobrevivió al bombardeo

de la ciudad japonesa de Maebashi cuando tenía ocho años.

Con los ojos cerrados revive en blanco y negro los momentos pavorosos que tuvo que pasar en un refugio antiaéreo mientras los aviones sobrevolaban su cabeza y las bombas explotaban. La precisión de sus recuerdos al describir con todo detalle aquel suceso, mediante la simulación de los sonidos de las bombas y las sirenas y la repetición pormenorizada de los diálogos que escuchó durante aquel momento de interminable angustia, nos trasladan al ambiente claustrofóbico del refugio bajo el bombardeo. Sin embargo, y simultáneamente, el tratamiento cinematográfico de la escena hace dudar de la verosimilitud de los recuerdos de un niño en una situación de tan extrema excepción.

En la obra más temprana que aquí se expone, Mamá [Mum], 2003, somos testigos de una escena de la vida cotidiana, una conversación anodina que el propio Koizumi mantiene por teléfono con su madre tras un día de trabajo, que vira repentinamente y de forma absurda de la armonía al caos, cuando el artista le confiesa que está “en la guerra”. A partir de ese momento el vídeo se convierte en una desgarradora escena de sonidos cacofónicos y movimientos convulsos que simulan un escenario bélico.

Un trágico desenlace que alude a la fragilidad del cuerpo y a lo inesperada que puede ser la llegada de la muerte.

"Depth of Field" is a programme that focuses on the production, screening and study of contemporary audiovisual practice.

The aim of "Depth of Field" is to offer an in-depth consideration of the work of audiovisual artists (those who produce their work in video format, those who engage in a dialogue with film and other media, and those whose work takes the form of installations with moving images of a very varied nature). Through the presentation of works by established and up-and-coming creators, this programme is intended to help to generate an ongoing space for dialogue in which the artists’ pieces complement each other and contribute to a better understanding of this medium.

The first "Depth of Field" Season addresses the issue of violence, with an exhibition and examination of the work of Meiro Koizumi and María Ruido, two artists who adopt different artistic angles and languages but who both explore violence as a force that pervades the intimate sphere of bodies and the public realm of history.

Meiro Koizumi was born in Gunma, Japan, in 1976. He lives and works in Yokohama, Japan. Koizumi attended the International Christian University, Tokyo (1996-1999); Chelsea College of Art and Design, London (1999-2002) as well as the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (2005-2006). His most recent solo shows have been held at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico (2015), the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2013), Artspace Sydney (2011) and the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo (2009). He has also presented his work at the Shanghai Biennale (2018), the Montreal Biennale (2016), the Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale (2014), the Liverpool Biennial (2010), the Aichi Triennale (2010), and the Liverpool Biennial (2010), and has participated in various group shows at the National Museum of Art, Osaka (2018), the Tate Modern, London (2007 and 2013) and the Barbican Centre in London (2002). www.meirokoizumi.com

Meiro Koizumi (Gunma, Japan, 1976) makes works that examine an extensive series of themes fundamental to the shaping of contemporary society, particularly those relating to dynamics of power, the conflict between the sense of duty and desire, and the boundaries between the public sphere and the private realm.

Thanks to his choice of characters and the painstaking preparation of his scripts and their staging, Koizumi’s works recreate situations of heightened emotional tension in which tragedy and cruelty are tinged with comic aspects. The artist manipulates his characters in order to provoke in them highly-charged emotional responses, drawing a reaction from viewers and making them deeply uncomfortable. In this way, Koizumi reveals the helplessness and fragility of the human psyche when the interest of the individual is in conflict with that of the collective, and he also exposes the conventions and prejudices of society today.

Some of Koizumi’s most striking works take the country of his birth as a testing ground for analysing conflicts that are in reality universal. Furthermore, these pieces can be understood as a comment on the way in which the traumas of the past are determining factors in the political

configuration of the present and of how, at the present time, a collective national history is being constructed that legitimises itself on the basis of these recollections and the continuing pain and grief.

However, Koizumi’s most recent piece, Battlelands (2018) is set not in Japan but the United States. The central work of this programme, Battlelands focuses on the home environment and recollections of seven veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In their own voices, the veterans describe the most violent and painful experiences they went through during their participation in these conflicts while they record landscapes and ordinary scenes of their daily lives.

By highlighting the brutal contradiction between these images of the calm present and the veterans’ testimony of the past, Koizumi reflects on how traumatic recollections of war inexorably pervade his subjects’ ordinary, private and current environment. At the same time, however, as it is the veterans themselves who capture these images as they move around, there are hints at the wish for the iconography of the past war to be replaced by that of the "battlegrounds" of their present lives.

The effects of war and the idea of conflict, embodied in the figure of the soldier, are precisely the thematic cores that determined the selection of works that are presented here and are two of the main themes that Koizumi has examined critically in other works.

Thus, in Portrait of a Young Samurai (2009), an actor dressed in the uniform worn by a Second World War air force pilot is forced to express what Koizumi terms the “Samurai spirit” repeatedly and with increasing intensity in a poignant scene in which he says goodbye to his parents early in the morning on the day he is to sacrifice himself for the fatherland on a suicide mission. The scene progresses from hysterical grief to despair, ending with Koizumi himself imitating the distressed voice of the kamikaze pilot’s mother interrupting her son and begging him not to end his life.

This scene, a good example of this particular combination of the comic and the cruel that features frequently in this artist’s work, places the idea of self-sacrifice as the highest expression of the patriotic sentimentalism propagated so often by film and television in emotional and simplistic messages as part of the constant revision of Japan’s action in the war.

In two later works, Where Silence Fails (Double Projection #1) (2013) and Trapped Words (2015), Koizumi uses the first-hand testimony of two people who experienced the war in Japan at very different times in their lives.

In Where Silence Fails (Double Projection #1) (2013), the leading character is Mr. Itazu, a kamikaze pilot who survived a mission to defend Okinawa in 1945 as his plane suffered engine failure. Death was the ultimate act of honour for kamikaze pilots and Itazu’s botched

flight was his supreme shame. Such survivors feel guilt over their companions who successfully and gloriously accomplished their kamikaze exploit, such as Mr. Ashida, Itazu’s fellow pilot who died on the same mission and who Itazu plays in the video and has a fictitious conversation with. A double monologue of overlapping images thanks to which Mr. Itazu, as a medium, finally seems to gain forgiveness for his inability to fulfil his task.

In the second video, Trapped Words (2015), Mr. Harada explains how he survived the bombardment of the city of Maebashi when he was eight years old. With his eyes closed, he relives in black and white the moments of fear that he had to spend in an air-raid shelter while planes flew overhead and bombs exploded all around. The preciseness of his memories as he describes the events in full detail, including his imitation of the sounds of the bombs and the sirens and the thorough repetition of the conversations he heard during that interminable moment of anguish, transport us to the claustrophobic environment of the shelter during the bombing raid. Nevertheless, the cinematographic treatment of the scene makes us doubt the plausibility of the recollections of a small boy in such extreme circumstances.

In the earliest work shown here, Mum (2003), we witness an everyday scene, an unremarkable conversation on the phone between Koizumi himself and his mother after a day at work. Their chat suddenly and absurdly shifts from harmony to chaos when the artist admits to her that he is “at war”. At this moment, the video turns into a harrowing scene of cacophonous noises and agitated movements reminiscent of warfare. A tragic denouement that alludes to the frailty of the body and how unexpected the arrival of death can be.
