“Profundidad de campo” es un programa destinado a la producción, la muestra y el estudio de la práctica audiovisual contemporánea.

El objetivo de “Profundidad de campo” es ofrecer una visión —en profundidad—, del trabajo de artistas del medio audiovisual (aquellos que desarrollan su obra en formato video, los que dialogan con el cine y con otros medios o de aquellos que proponen instalaciones con imágenes en movimiento de un amplio rango). Mediante la presentación de las obras de estos creadores, tanto de trayectoria reconocida como emergente, este programa pretende contribuir a generar un espacio continuo para el diálogo, en el que las diferentes propuestas de los artistas, se complementen y contribuyan a un mejor entendimiento de este medio.

El primer ciclo de “Profundidad de campo” aborda el tema de la violencia con la muestra y el acercamiento a la obra de Meiro Koizumi (17 de enero-10 de marzo) y María Ruido (13 de marzo-5 de mayo). Dos artistas cuya producción indaga, desde diferentes ángulos y lenguajes artísticos, la violencia entendida como la fuerza que impregna tanto el ámbito íntimo de los cuerpos como el público de la historia.

María Ruido (Xinzo de Limia, 1967) es realizadora, artista visual, investigadora y docente. Vive en Madrid y Barcelona —donde trabaja como profesora en el Departamento de Artes Visuales y Diseño de la Universidad de Barcelona—, y es miembro de varios grupos de investigación en torno a la representación y sus relaciones contextuales. Sus ensayos visuales han recibido, entre otros, el Premio Generación 2003 (Categoría Audiovisuales) o el Best International Feature Documentary Award en el New York International Independent Film & Video Festival 2009, y se encuentran en colecciones permanentes de instituciones como el MNCARS, MACBA, CA2M, CGAC, el Archi OVNI o la Fundación CajaMadrid. Ha participado en proyectos expositivos estatales e internacionales, así como en festivales de cine y vídeo, circulando sus trabajos entre ambas esferas, la artística y la cinematográfica. www.workandwords.net

Las obras de María Ruido toman la forma de ensayos visuales, trabajos de largo recorrido en los que lo que finalmente se muestra es el fruto de un extenso y complejo proceso de investigación.

Para el desarrollo de sus proyectos, la artista hace uso de distintos elementos audiovisuales de los que se apropia —material de archivo, secuencias documentales y cinematográficas— que, dispuestos a modo de collage, proponen una reflexión sobre el propósito de los propios lenguajes, a la vez que ponen en cuestión la especificidad de sus códigos originales.

Junto a la variedad de lenguajes artísticos, en los proyectos de María Ruido se da también una multiplicidad de voces, ya que a menudo recurre al formato de la entrevista para construir la trama narrativa de los guiones. En ellas la artista adquiere así un papel protagonista puesto que establece con sus preguntas el ritmo conceptual y, en última instancia, es la que edita estos testimonios para elaborar un único relato polifónico coherente.

Buen ejemplo de este modo de trabajar es el vídeo documental que se muestra en el espacio lateral de la Nave 0, Lo que no puede ser visto debe ser mostrado (2010). Para la construcción de su guion se recurrió a varios testimonios contemporáneos, que aparecen intercalados entre una sucesión de escenas de películas de cine militante de la época de la Transición española prácticamente desconocidas por su escasa difusión.

A través de este ensayo fílmico María Ruido lleva a cabo un estudio sobre el establecimiento de una memoria oficial y examina el poder de las imágenes como instrumento político, capaz de elaborar el imaginario colectivo de un momento histórico concreto.

Muchas de las obras de la artista tienen como marco cronológico el periodo comprendido entre la muerte de Franco y la implantación del sistema democrático en España, un

tiempo en el que se produjeron cambios fundamentales en la política, en la economía y en la sociedad. María Ruido se refiere particularmente a los mecanismos de violencia que, directa e indirectamente, pusieron en marcha los estamentos dirigentes y a cómo sus consecuencias perviven todavía en la actualidad.

Este es el eje vertebrador de gran parte de su obra y la temática principal de la selección que aquí se expone.

Así, ElectroClass (2011) parte del archivo de entrevistas de la ETB, la televisión pública del País Vasco, para proponer un nuevo punto de vista desde el que mirar los imaginarios del trabajo en el estado español durante la década de los ochenta.

Esta obra se centra en la ciudad de Bilbao para informar sobre los cambios registrados en las condiciones laborales desde la llegada del capitalismo industrial hasta el momento actual: la desaparición del concepto tradicional de clase trabajadora y la transformación del tejido urbano.

El lugar que ocupa mujer en la sociedad neoliberal contemporánea, es otro de los temas fundamentales de la producción de la artista y, más específicamente, de la obra MATER AMATÍSIMA. Imaginarios y discursos sobre la maternidad en tiempos de cambio (2017). En ella se cuestiona el concepto contemporáneo de maternidad y se pone de manifiesto su carácter fetichista en una sociedad todavía caracterizada por las relaciones patriarcales y el apoyo a los valores familiares tradicionales.

Intercalando secuencias de películas que ilustran diferentes tipos de relaciones maternofiliales —como el relato clásico de Medea— con sucesos reales de la actualidad que han consternado a la opinión pública, esta obra llama la atención sobre cómo la maternidad es vista en el terreno de lo íntimo como una experiencia ambigua —rica y compleja—, llena de expectativas, algunas de ellas no siempre cumplidas, pero también como la condición que perpetúa la estabilidad del orden social.

Esta obra plantea cómo la tensión entre la voluntad y el deseo del individuo, y sobre todo la estructura patriarcal de la sociedad tradicional, condicionan de forma involuntaria e inconsciente la decisión de ser madre. A partir de esta reflexión, sugiere la posibilidad de generar modelos familiares menos convencionales, que rompan con los estereotipos.

El cuerpo, como sujeto político, es el protagonista casi único de las obras aquí citadas, ya que en él reside la capacidad de definir nuevos modos de relacionarnos afectiva y políticamente.

Por último, la obra más temprana expuesta aquí, La voz humana (1998), es una videoacción que surge como resultado de la grabación de una performance cuyos únicos elementos son el cuerpo y la voz de María Ruido.

En esta performance la artista aparece frente a una mesa sobre la que hay un radiocasete que reproduce un discurso pregrabado con su voz; al mismo tiempo, ella lee en voz alta ese texto procurando que ambos sonidos coincidan, mientras se va

pegando en la boca trozos de cinta adhesiva que dificultan cada vez más su monólogo, hasta que finalmente su voz queda casi reducida al silencio absoluto.

El texto que se escucha, un fragmento del libro de Miguel Cereceda El origen de la mujer sujeto, le sirve a la artista como manifiesto, como declaración pública sobre la importancia de escuchar la voz propia de las mujeres, que en muchas ocasiones se encarga de reproducir discursos patriarcales, a la vez que incide en la capacidad del lenguaje como arma política.

Todas las obras que aquí se exponen se presentan así como invitaciones, muchas veces incómodas, a meditar en el poder de las imágenes y a enfatizar la fuerza narrativa que se obtiene al colocar una imagen determinada junto a otra. El lenguaje audiovisual se constituye en herramienta para el pensamiento crítico, y el montaje, la edición de estas imágenes, como forma de posicionarse ideológicamente y de generar un discurso político que, en el caso de las obras expuestas, cuestiona las convenciones que dominan nuestra sociedad.

“Depth of Field” is a programme that focuses on the production, screening and study of contemporary audiovisual practice.

The aim of “Depth of Field” is to offer an in-depth consideration of the work of audiovisual artists (those who produce their work in video format, those who engage in a dialogue with film and other media, and those whose work takes the form of installations with moving images of a very varied nature). Through the presentation of works by established and up-and-coming creators, this programme is intended to help to generate an ongoing space for dialogue in which the artists’ pieces complement each other and contribute to a better understanding of this medium.

The first “Depth of Field” Season will address the issue of violence, with an exhibition and examination of the work of Meiro Koizumi (January 17-March 10) and María Ruido (March 13-May 5), two artists who adopt different artistic angles and languages but who both explore violence as a force that pervades the intimate sphere of bodies and the public realm of history.

María Ruido (Xinzo de Limia, 1967) is a filmmaker, visual artist, researcher and teacher. She divides her time between Madrid and Barcelona, where she lectures in the Visual Arts and Design Department at the Universitat de Barcelona. She is also a member of a number of groups that research the representation and its relationship with its context. She has received a number of prizes for her visual essays, among them the Premio Generación 2003 (in the Audiovisuals Category) and the Best International Feature Documentary Award at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival 2009. Her work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions such as the MNCARS, MACBA, CA2M, CGAC, Archi OVNI and the Fundación CajaMadrid. María Ruido produces videos in the form of visual essays that she works on over a long period, with the piece finally shown being the outcome of a lengthy and complex process of research.

contemporary first-hand accounts, which appear interspersed with a series of scenes from protest films from the time of the Spanish transition to democracy that are largely unknown as they were not widely screened.

In developing her projects, the artist makes use of assorted audiovisual elements that she appropriates: archive material and clips from documentaries and film. Once arranged in the manner of a collage, they put forward reflection on the purpose of the languages themselves, while calling into question the specificity of their original codes.

Through this film essay, Ruido produces a study of the establishment of an official memory and examines the power of images as an instrument of political power, one capable of shaping the collective imaginary of a particular moment in history.

As well as a variety of artistic languages, María Ruido’s projects also contain a multiplicity of voices, since she often uses the format of the interview to construct the narrative plot of the scripts. In these interviews, the artist takes a leading role, as she establishes the conceptual rhythm with her questions and, ultimately, she is the one who edits these testimonies to formulate a single, coherent polyphonic account.

Many of the artist’s works cover the timeframe of the period from the death of Franco to the establishment of democracy in Spain, an era when sweeping changes took place in politics, in the economy and in society. Ruido refers particularly to the mechanisms of violence that were set in motion, directly and indirectly, by the ruling classes, the consequences of which can still be felt today, as she shows. This is the central thread of much of her oeuvre and the main theme of the selection shown here.

A good example of this way of working is the video documentary shown in the side space of Nave 0, Lo que no puede ser visto debe ser mostrado [That which cannot be seen must be shown] (2010). To construct her script, Ruido uses various

La voz humana [The Human Voice], 1998

The piece focuses on the city of Bilbao and comments on the changes in employment conditions from the arrival of industrial capitalism to the present day: the disappearance of the traditional concept of the working class and the transformation of the urban fabric.

Women’s place in contemporary neoliberal society is another of the central themes in the artist’s oeuvre, in particular in the piece MATER AMATÍSIMA. Imaginarios y discursos sobre la maternidad en tiempos de cambio [MATER AMATÍSIMA. Imaginaries and discourses on motherhood during times of change] (2017), in which she questions the concept of motherhood today and exposes its fetishist nature in a society still characterised by patriarchal relations and its ongoing espousal of traditional family values.

By alternating clips from films that illustrate different types of relationships between mothers and their children —such as the classical story of Medea— with real modern-day events that have stirred up public opinion, this work draws attention to the way motherhood is viewed in the terrain of the intimate as an ambiguous —and rich and complex— experience full of expectations, not all of them met, but also as a condition that perpetuates the stability of the social order.

This work posits that the tension between the will and wishes of the individual and, above all, the patriarchal structure of traditional society involuntarily and unwittingly conditions a woman’s decision to have children. Following on from this reflection, it suggests the possibility of generating less conventional family models that defy stereotypes.

The body as a political subject is almost the sole protagonist in the works mentioned here, since the ability to define new ways of relating to each other affectively and politically resides within it.

Lastly, La voz humana [The Human Voice] (1998), the earliest work shown here, is a video action that came about as a result of the recording of a performance in which the only elements are Ruido’s body and voice In this performance, the artist appears at a table on which there is a videocassette playing a discourse pre-recorded in her voice.

As it plays, she reads the same text aloud, attempting to make the sounds coincide while sticking bits of adhesive tape to her mouth, making her monologue increasingly difficult, to the extent that finally her voice is reduced to almost complete silence.

The text, an excerpt from Miguel Cereceda’s book El origen de la mujer sujeto [The Origins of the Female Subject], is used by the artist as a manifesto, as a public declaration on the importance of listening to the voice of women —which in many instances takes on the task of reproducing patriarchal discourses— while at the same time highlighting the power of language as a political weapon.

All the works shown here are presented as invitations, many of them uncomfortable, to meditate on the power of images.

In addition, they draw attention to the narrative force achieved by placing one particular image next to another. Audiovisual language constitutes a tool for critical thinking, and the editing of these images is a way of adopting an ideological stance and of generating a political discourse which, in the case of these exhibits, questions the conventions that govern our society.
