MATA Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Facial Aesthetics – all you need to know The MATA Postgraduate Certificate/ Diploma in Facial Aesthetics is a new postgraduate qualification developed

by MATA, awarded by Eduqual.

Delegates will receive the EduQual Diploma (and Certificate) in Clinical Aesthetic Injectables Therapies (SCQF Level 11).

Our postgraduate diploma is made up of a total of seven mandatory learning units which total 60 credits..

Of this, there is a face to face practical component.

MATA Postgraduate Certificate is made up of 4 mandatory units and the Clinical Injectables Diploma is made up of 4 mandatory units (Certificate) and 3 mandatory units (7 in total).

The MATA Postgraduate Certificate/ Diploma in Facial Aesthetics has been designed to suit professionals with a busy schedule. Although it is possible for learners to complete the certificate/diploma as quickly or as slowly as they wish, rushing through modules is not advisable.

MATA offers a portfolio of CIBTAC regulated laser qualifications from level 3-5 and a postgraduate certificate/diploma in Facial Aesthetics regulated by SQA. The breadth and depth of these offerings sets us apart from our competitors.

To gain a thorough understanding, we would suggest those starting at foundation level allocate 9 months to 1 year to complete our certificate/ diploma in full.

A Q&A with Mr Zavahir Director of MATA & Juvea Medical Mr Zavahir, MBChB, MRCS, MSC, founded MATA in 2015 with the aim of training a new generation of cosmetics professionals who hold safety and quality in high regard.

We caught up with him to ask about the new MATA Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Facial Aesthetics, as well as a few choice facts about MATA’s history.

Which aspect of MATA’s training course are you most proud of?

I pride myself on the high standard of teaching provided on the courses which comes from some of the top practitioners in the medical aesthetics industry, as well as the hands-on nature of the training on many volunteer patients. Many training providers don’t offer this, and we’re glad to be trendsetters.

What inspired you to establish MATA? I launched MATA in 2015 to improve the standards of training in the medical aesthetics industry following the Keogh Report by Professor Sir Bruch Keogh in 2013.

There are numerous training courses in advanced aesthetics available to healthcare professionals which range in duration, content and quality and are rarely delivered or assessed to recognised academic standards.

I was alarmed by the fact that some injectable therapies, such as botulinum toxin courses and dermal filler courses, are available to non-prescribers despite concerns expressed by the sector in the UK. 6

This concern for patient safety and changes in regulations led me to create MATA, developed with support and guidance from leading surgical and non-surgical cosmetic/ plastic surgery practitioners, educational consultants and medical aesthetic equipment suppliers and distributors.

What advice would you give to aspiring aesthetic professionals?

We advise our delegates to do their research into training providers to ensure they’re receiving a sound education before launching into this field. We want learners to appreciate the importance of deep learning and how it benefits clinical practice.

Why should prospective applicants choose MATA? The structure of our comprehensive courses and qualifications makes it enjoyable to learn, whilst gaining the maximum amount of practical ‘hands on’ training with volunteer patients. The theory aspect of the course is completed via our online resource prior to attendance to to maximise treating not listening to lectures.

Who’s the ideal candidate for this course?

Due to the depth and nature of the content, learners must be a registered healthcare professional and hold a degree level qualification (Level 6) in a medical, dental, nursing or allied healthcare related subject.

The diploma is the perfect qualification for someone who’s an established aesthetic practitioner. Learners who don’t hold a level 6 degree must be able to provide evidence of their ability to study at postgraduate level.

If English is not the learner’s first language IELTS of 6.5 or equivalent is required.

Learners wishing to achieve the recognised

qualification will need access to a suitable clinical facility to complete and record a number of injectable treatments including botulinum toxins and dermal fillers in addition to treatments they undertake as part of our supervised learning programme.

What advice would you give to anyone hoping to establish their own aesthetics clinic?

For those wishing to one day open their own aesthetics clinic, we recommend a solid level of training and qualifications in the medical aesthetics field to have an edge over competitors and to be patient when building up a patient base. These things take time.

What do you aim to deliver in an aesthetics course?

The programme has been mapped to the JCCP (Joint Council of Cosmetic Practitioners) educational competencies and Cosmetic Practice Standards Authority (CPSA) guidelines and requires learners to study and evidence knowledge, understanding and clinical skills in all aspects of aesthetic injectable therapies.

From HEE to JCCP – how effective training became so important The cosmetic surgery industry was largely self-regulated for many decades – but the PIP breast implant scandal significantly changed that, highlighting the safety issues that arise when cosmetic surgeons fail to source materials that are safe for the human body.

Health Education England (HEE) was mandated to work with regulators, Royal Colleges and industry stakeholders to conduct a full review of the qualifications required for non-surgical cosmetic interventions. The report, undertaken by Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, was published in April 2013 (The Keogh Review).

As a result of this review the HEE produced guidelines in two parts. The announcement in January 2016 draws attention to Part Two of the report which discusses recommendations, qualification details and changes since Part One which came into regulatory effect in September 2018.

The primary aim of the Keogh Report was to improve the safety and standards of the cosmetics industry. This extract from

the report sums up the specifics of what is expected of the industry: ‘People undergoing non-surgical treatments should be confident that their practitioner has the required skills and expertise to undertake the procedure successfully and safely. The training and accreditation process should ensure that practitioners are able to identify and manage complications of treatment.

‘The curriculum and training requirements should be regularly reviewed to ensure that all practitioners are adequately trained in emerging procedures, this will involve regular retraining for those who wish to perform the latest treatments.’

What does this mean for the industry?

In essence, this means that medical professionals need training specific to the field they’re specialising in. This training must be fully accredited and comply with all HEE regulations.

Step by step guide to aesthetic training The path taken through MATA will allow you to develop your skills in a fun and informative way, as well as providing you with the opportunity to expand your network of contacts within the industry.

Here’s a brief run-through of what you’ll undertake as you complete your course.

VLE Our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is the central hub of your studies, providing you with hundreds of hours of reading materials and online coursework to ensure you understand facial aesthetics on a granular level.

You’ll be able to tackle the online portion of your course anywhere and at any time, whether that means on your daily commute or in the evening. This is entirely flexible learning that fits around your schedule.

Foundation/Advanced days A foundation day is your chance to dip your toe in the water of facial aesthetics, providing you with a packed schedule of theory, practice, networking and discussions with expert clinicians of medical aesthetics.

After registration, you will recap the relevant theory, which will include advice on products, injection techniques, aftercare, marketing and much more. This section of the day will include a question and answer session.

You’ll then be able to take the theory you’ve learned and put it into practice with volunteer patients. All sessions with patients are limited to a small number of participants, giving you ample opportunity and time to utilise the skills you’ve learned.

At the end of the day, you’ll receive a certificate of completion (please note: this is not a formal qualification).

Clinical Log Book The qualification includes assignments that must be completed in your clinical practice. This includes a Clinical Log Book of injectable treatments and a portfolio of evidence to show your clinic management arrangements, e.g. policies and procedures, health and safety assessments, clinical audits, medicines management, etc. as required for safe and effective practice.

Learners will be invited to apply for recognition of prior learning/experience for the clinic management portfolio.

Assessment Days When you join us for the clinical assessment days, the tutors will review what you have learned from the knowledge modules and any previous clinical sessions.

Once both you and the tutors are confident in your knowledge and skills, you will assess, consult and treat patients using a range of botulinum toxin and dermal filler injection techniques under direct observed assessment, there will be DOPS and OSCE stations set up.

You will also complete written papers under examination conditions. You can record treatments completed during assessment days in your Clinical Log Book.
