THE CAVE

LOCATION: Central Park, New York, US

PROFESSOR: Peter Laurance

SEMESTER: Fall 2022

This project encompasses Plato’s allegory of the cave, which stands as a metaphor for education. This allegory was the premise. With that in mind one big factor was the precedent, The Danteum by Giuseppe Terragni & Pietro Lingeri. Where the metaphor of the design was displayed within the movement of their play on heavan, hell and purgatory with respect to Dantuas writing. So with that in mind, the design was constructed by reading Plato’s allegory of the cave. The story highlighted the use of light and moment. This design replicate the story if it were in todays standards.

ALLEGORY OF THE CAVE

The allegory can be summarized by its emphasis on the importance of education. Figure 1, the sketch depicts the allegory as a section. The chained people who can not move there hand another other direction, The puppeteers and their caved artifacts control what the people who are chained see and hear which make them feel scared because they do not know anything of the outside world. The rough path that one took to reach the bright sunlight outside. This represents the journey of learning in life. The sketch makes connections to life today.

1. Puppets can be in relation to phones, media, or anything that can disrate us from reaching our full potential or acquiring knowledge.

2. The journey is rough and the adjustment to learning anything is uncomfortable. Reach true awareness/knowledge. face that there are things you just don’t know so you continue the journey of wanting to learn.

The whole allegory references the eyes continuously.

The site location is central park. Central Park is located in one of the busiest areas where people from all around the world visit. This metaphor-building design of Plato’s allegory can reach millions, not to mention that Central Park is surrounded by many educational venues.

7

The perspectives

The “fixed” perspective room has 12 theater sits with barriers on each side of each sit to create a sense of isolation. In front of the sits is a screen that is projected from the mezzanine area. Behind the theater, sit is a way out of the isolated room.

In the “journey room”, the journey beings when the person leaves the theater-like room and follows the light and the staircase leading outside. This resembles the journey of leaving the cave.

8

The “Enlightened area” space holds places to sit under a pavilion where individuals can enjoy the outdoors and talk to anybody.

The “Control Room” is a space people can go to after seeing the “enlightened area”. This space gives people the power to change what they want the people in the “fix” perspective can see and hear.

Culinary Institute

LOCATION: Asheville, North Carolina

PROFESSOR: Douglas Hecker

SEMESTER: Spring 2021

This project’s form and structure are of inspiration by the nearby Blue Ridge Mountain trees, where the design has tree-like columns. The building design includes waste management, where food waste from surrounding restaurants can be gathered for compost. These will help job development in the area for the homeless population. The program will help students understand how to decrease the food waste problem and connect with neighboring farms in the area as part of their culinary growth.
