Dear MBI Member, Master Builders of Iowa’s mission is to be the essential resource for improving member performance and promoting a business environment favorable to the construction industry. A key component of facilitating our mission is our education and training programs. MBI has a demonstrated history of offering quality education and training programs for industry leaders, managers, supervisors, and craft workers. This history has been driven by our membership to aid in the continuing quality improvement of their human capital. The high performing members that are MBI have long understood the value of making sure that they and their employees are continually engaged in learning in order to remain high performing organizations. In an effort to recognize those individuals in the industry who believe in the importance of lifelong learning and have demonstrated their desire for personal growth through their participation in the wide array of education and training activities offered by Master Builders of Iowa, we have established the Master Builder Designation. Leadership is an ability, not a title and with the proper training and experience, anyone can be a leader from any position within an organization. The acquisition and development of leadership skills is critical for those individuals who want to have lasting careers in commercial construction serving as high performing leaders within their organization. In review of the following four areas of the Master Builder Designation program, you will find that they all circle back to leadership…to implement Project Management, Ecological Construction, Safety, and Ethics into your company or projects, Leadership is key. Ecological Construction is not a new concept. Commercial construction has always had an impact on the environment. When you consider air, soil, and water, construction company employees should be aware of the daily impact to the general public as well as the long term environmental impact their work creates. Participation in ecological construction education and training demonstrates an individual’s concern for the environment, which makes them leaders in their industry.

E

Elective credits can be earned from any or all of these training and professional development categories. Excess credits in the above categories will automatically be calculated into the Elective category.

Project Management is the responsibility of a host of individuals on a commercial construction project. Whether you are a senior leader, project manager, supervisor, or craftworker, there are skills within the broad context of project management that play a critical role in determining your success and that of the project. Individuals who are able to acquire and develop these skills are often identified as high performing leaders. Safety is at the heart of any good builder and is a cornerstone of Master Builders of Iowa. To be considered a Master Builder, an individual must acquire and develop the skills necessary to work or manage a project at a high level regarding safety. In addition to the day-to-day safety behaviors, the Master Builder must stay in tune with the latest advancements in safety as well as understand the compliance issues when working with OSHA or other governing bodies. Ethics is what separates Master Builders from the rest. Without ethical principles guiding the commercial construction industry, we would not be where we are today. To ensure that ethical principles remain a key component of the industry, individuals should participate in ethics workshops and activities toward becoming a high performing leader.
