STRATEGIC PLANNING LAYING OUT THE ROAD MAP FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS THROUGH

The 2025 MBI strategic planning process officially kicked off with the launch of a memberwide survey during the Winter Conference in February. During the event, attendees could use a QR code that would take them to a survey portal where participants could provide feedback on various service offerings currently being provided to the MBI membership.

The data gathered through the survey process will help both MBI member-leaders and staff identify new opportunities to add to the existing complement of services. Likewise, we may find out that the utilization or satisfaction of a current program is just not that great, so we can then make necessary changes or even scrap it. All of which will better position MBI to create the greatest value to the membership.

The entire strategic planning process will cover a good portion of the summer and fall months. During this time, there will be focus groups, steering committees and a Board of Directors’ retreat to help with the development of a plan

that will shape how MBI provides the highest level of value to the membership. Once all the work is completed, a final roll out of the entire plan will align with our Regional Meetings in the fall of this year.

Everyone at MBI who is involved in this effort is committed to developing programs and services that will benefit the industry through advocacy, education, and resources. This strategic plan will be central to creating a more favorable business environment for Iowa commercial builders over the next 5 years and will also lay the groundwork for higher achievements well into the future.

In the high-demand, fastpaced world of commercial construction, prioritizing employee well-being is more than just an ethical consideration—it’s a critical strategy for success. A healthy workforce leads to increased productivity, higher employee satisfaction, and improved business outcomes. While wellness is often associated with physical and mental health, it spans a broad spectrum of dimensions that are vital for creating a thriving and effective work environment.

At MBI, our Dimensions of Wellness Committee has been diligently working on an action plan to enhance resources that promote wellness in the workplace, community, and at home.

MBI has already rolled out several resources to support wellness, including the Lunch Club, where members from across the state gather to network and learn about various wellness topics. In 2025, the focus is on Financial Wellness: Readiness and Financial Wellness for Construction Industry Professionals.

Additionally, we’re thrilled to announce the 2025 Summer Team Retreat: The Wellness Connection: Building a Better You! taking place on July 10-11, 2025, at the Hyatt Regency Coralville. This two-day retreat will focus on personal and professional wellness, with powerful speakers.

These experts will share insights on leadership, resilience, and the integral role wellness plays in highperforming teams. This retreat is not only about learning but also about experiencing wellness in realtime.

"“MBI will establish and maintain a culture of wellness in our industry by encouraging activities that contribute to a healthy lifestyle and provide members with the tools in each of the 8 Dimensions of Wellness that they need to develop wellness at the workplace, within the community, and at home.”

SPEAKERS

The Importance of Wellness in Commercial Construction

By adopting a holistic approach to wellness, commercial construction companies can create a work environment where employees feel valued, motivated, and empowered to perform at their best. A focus on the Dimensions of Wellness leads to improved productivity, job satisfaction, and overall organizational success.

Integrating wellness into the workplace is not just a choice—it’s an essential strategy for sustaining long-term success in the construction industry. A focus on wellness is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage that will pay dividends in employee retention, productivity, and company growth for years to come.

We look forward to continuing this journey with you. If you’re interested in learning more about the Dimensions of Wellness or the upcoming retreat, please reach out to Tara Rinehart, Vice President of Industry Education at TRinehart@MBI.Build.

With the start of a new “Board calendar,” the Board elects a Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Associate Secretary to serve for a period of one year, or until their successors are elected and qualified. Also, Brent Thompson with Elder Corporation will serve one year as the Associate Secretary.

New additions to the Board as recommended by a Nominations Committee and approved at the Membership Meeting include Eric Kingland of Kingland Construction Services in Forest City and Casey Port of Hubbell Construction Services in West Des Moines.

Each year, the MB EYE on the Future class elects a graduating member to serve on the Board of Directors. For 2025, CJ Sherzan of Elder Corporation will be filling a two-year term and joins the 2024 MB EYE on the Future representative Eric Bridgewater of Baker Group.

We also want to thank our retiring Board members who have completed their respective terms of service. First, many thanks go to Randy Clarahan of Mortensen and Eric Hammer of R.H. Prevent Loss of Life: Studies have shown that knowing how to react can dramatically reduce the number of fatalities during a violent incident. Escaping the area, hiding in a secure place, or fighting back as a last resort can prevent injury and death.

Enhance Workplace Security: A clear understanding of the protocol ensures that employees are contributing to a safer work environment. In addition, consider the various environments different employees are exposed to in different roles in your organization.

Legal Compliance and Liability: Many local laws and safety regulations require workplaces to have emergency response plans. Implementing Run, Hide, Fight ensures that the workplace complies with these regulations and reduces liability in case of an incident. Emergency preparedness can have a positive effect on insurance premiums and incentives for implementing plans.

Create a Culture of Preparedness: Training employees in emergency protocols fosters a sense of preparedness and responsibility. This culture can extend beyond active shooter events, helping employees to respond appropriately to other types of emergencies, such as fires or natural disasters.

Prevent Emotional and Psychological Trauma: Knowing how to act in a crisis can reduce the emotional toll of an emergency. Employees who are mentally prepared are less likely to experience long-term psychological trauma after an incident.

Boost Confidence and Morale: Employees who are trained and know that their employer has taken steps to protect them will feel more secure and confident. This sense of safety can contribute to improved morale and productivity. A perfect work environment doesn’t exist, but we can take steps to make things better overall.

4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Support for Vulnerable Employees: Not all employees are physically capable of escaping or defending themselves in dangerous situations. The Run, Hide, Fight plan can help provide guidance for individuals with special needs or vulnerabilities, ensuring everyone knows what to do and how to protect themselves.

Incorporating the Run, Hide, Fight protocol into workplace safety plans isn't just about compliance—it's about creating an environment where everyone feels secure and equipped to handle the unimaginable. For questions on how to utilize this On Demand training for your company, please contact Luke Longman at Luke@IowaCSSI.com.

RIIF FUNDING

Position: RIIF monies are needed for infrastructure purposes and should not be diverted for non-infrastructure related needs.

Lastly, the “Employee-Approach” can assist you and your company through technical and very handson education and training curriculums. LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

The Leadership Experience graduated 23 participants on March 14. Participants in The Leadership Experience engaged in four dynamic, interactive learning experiences, each crafted to deepen their leadership skills. Each experience included pre-session assignments, insightful lessons by David, team exercises and networking opportunities with participants. As a unique bonus, David provided a confidential space for personal growth and development through 1:1 coaching. Great construction leadership goes beyond technical expertise; it’s about your character, your ability to inspire others, and your journey as a leader - through both triumphs and challenges- and this is exactly what our 23 participants gained.

PMPS LEADERSHIP SERIES 11 Years Strong

Project Managers & Project Supervisors graduated 38 participants on October 24. Success of a construction team, project or company often boils down to a few key components that, if carefully combined, can lead to great accomplishments where everybody wins. Employees, companies, and customers can all win with the proper combination of teamwork, leadership, communication, accountability, personal responsibility, budgeting and quality control on every project, every day. A substantial portion of the responsibility for these areas falls on the project’s leadership team of project managers and project supervisors. Participants were challenged as project team members to understand project budgets, elevate individual and team performance, understand customer dynamics, and even have fun in the process. This was an outstanding opportunity to put our members in a teamwork atmosphere of learning and professional growth.

FOUNDATIONS OF A FIELD LEADER 8 Years Strong

Foundations of a Field Leader graduated 33 participants on March 7. This field leadership development program is in its 8th year and has been completely transformed. Leading a team, crew, or group of individuals in a commercial construction project environment takes an exceptional person with the right skill set and personality, along with construction knowledge and awareness and it begins with leading yourself. Leaders in the field must be able to manage time, equipment, materials, and most importantly, people. This series provided attendees with a unique blended approach to leadership development with content being presented from both a theory and conceptual approach, while also being reinforced with examples and activities specific to the commercial construction project perspective. The Foundations of a Field Leader course was led by Nic Bittle, founder of Workforce Pro, a leadership development organization that partners with companies to create high-performing teams. Nic has over 20 years of experience in leadership development and workforce training and is the author of four books. His passion for helping individuals grow as leaders made him the perfect guide for this transformative course. Nic’s engaging approach to leadership training provided participants with actionable strategies to apply in your daily work.

DID YOU KNOW?

TRAINING DEMAND ON

In today’s fast-paced construction industry, flexibility and efficiency are paramount. Master Builders of Iowa (MBI) offers an innovative solution to meet the growing demand for training and development with their Training on Demand program. This offering allows members and their teams to access essential education tailored to their specific schedules, locations, and project needs, ensuring seamless integration into daily operations. Whether it’s improving team collaboration, enhancing safety protocols, or staying ahead of new industry trends, MBI’s Training on Demand offers high-level education exactly when it’s needed most.

Flexibility and Control at Your Fingertips

Similar to how “on-demand” streaming services allow us to consume content when it’s convenient, MBI’s Training on Demand model provides unmatched flexibility for your

workforce. Members can request training at a time, place, and format that best fits their project scope, workforce schedules, and budget. The result? A training experience that is efficient, costeffective, and tailored to your business’s specific needs.

AT MASTER BUILDERS OF IOWA TRAINING WHEN & WHERE YOU NEED IT

Highlighted Training Programs: "Working Genius" & "Run, Hide, Fight"

Among the diverse range of training sessions available through MBI, two standout options are particularly popular and impactful for construction teams: Working Genius and Run, Hide, Fight.

Working Genius Sessions for Your Team

In today’s collaborative work environments, team dynamics and communication are essential for success. The Working Genius model, developed by Patrick Lencioni, is a game-changer for understanding and optimizing team performance. This training focuses on identifying the six distinct types of working geniuses for the individuals on the team. The goal is to help teams understand how they operate, communicate, and collaborate most effectively. By recognizing each team member's strengths and weaknesses, teams can work more cohesively, reduce conflict, and improve overall productivity.

For construction teams, the Working Genius framework is invaluable in optimizing project execution. Whether working on large-scale projects or daily tasks, knowing how to leverage the strengths of each team member ensures smoother workflows, more efficient problem-solving, and better project outcomes.

Run, Hide, Fight Safety Protocols for Your Site

In the construction industry, safety is a top priority and ensuring that workers are prepared for any emergency is crucial. Run, Hide, Fight is a comprehensive safety training session designed to equip your team with the tools and knowledge to respond effectively in an active threat or violent situation. This protocol teaches three critical actions:

Run: Evacuating the area, when possible, to remove your team from danger.

Hide: Securing a safe space if evacuation is not feasible and staying out of sight.

Fight: As a last resort, defending yourself and others using available resources.

YOU ARE NOT POWERLESS

Whether in the office or on the construction site, having a trained workforce prepared to respond calmly and efficiently to threats can save lives. This training focuses on practical strategies for survival and deescalation, helping teams stay safe in a wide range of emergency scenarios.

In partnership with Construction Safety Specialists, Inc. and other expert trainers and speakers, MBI can provide top-tier training on a wide variety of topics, ranging from safety protocols to leadership skills. No matter the area of focus—be it safety, administrative skills, or project management—MBI’s Training on Demand can help prepare your team for success.

Whether your team prefers in-person training, virtual sessions, or a hybrid model that combines both, MBI provides the flexibility to deliver training in the format that works best for your company. For instance, teams that are spread out across different job sites can benefit from virtual or hybrid training, allowing some team members to attend in person while others participate remotely via Zoom or similar platforms.

Interested in learning more about how Training on Demand can benefit your team? To explore MBI’s full range of offerings and discover how you can implement Working Genius or Run, Hide, Fight in your workforce, reach out to Tara Rinehart at TRinehart@MBI.Build or by phone at (515) 657-4395.

MBI HONORS THE BEST OF THE

BUILD IOWA AWARD

DON WOODRUFF Woodruff Construction

The Build Iowa Award is the industry’s highest individual achievement, and it is presented each year to a builder in Iowa. The 2025 recipient, Don Woodruff, certainly embodies the tenants – Skill, Integrity, and Responsibility. He has an impressive MBI resume and has served a 5-year term on the MBI Board of Directors. During his time, he served as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-Chair and served as Chair of the Board in 2019. During his tenure as Chair, his leadership led MBI to create its MBI-WORKS Fund, which dedicated $5 million toward workforce initiatives. He played a pivotal role in advocating for a compromise approach to alternative project delivery methods – specifically Construction Manager at Risk – for all public owners. He has also been very active on several committees and is a longtime supporter of the MBI PAC. He is also always willing to support MBI’s public affairs and political efforts.

Don’s community involvement is another hallmark of his career in which his company actively supports and contributes to local efforts. In fact, in 2024, his company supported 67 organizations with more than $166,000 in donations. This sort of approach aligns with his company’s mission of “Building the future of our families, clients and communities.”

Congratulations Don!
