REGIONAL MEETINGS

Highlights All That MBI Offers

Every year during the fall months, the MBI team hosts regional breakfast and lunch meetings statewide. As an exclusive member benefit, all members are encouraged to participate to learn more about MBI’s compliment of services, while also using this time to catch up with some construction colleagues.

This year, attendees will be treated to a highly informative session as MBI staff shares many of the new offerings for 2026. We will lead off with an exclusive look at the new 5-year strategic plan. This is the result of member-wide surveys, several focus groups, committee meetings, and Board and staff retreats, all of which were instrumental in developing a roadmap that moves MBI forward into the next decade. The plan rolls out ways in which MBI will enhance communication, innovation, education, and help Iowa’s builders grow.

MBI’s education team will also unveil new classes as well as the training curriculums for fall of 2025 and all of 2026. Here you will see the wide selection of programs that will grow your team, assist in retaining talent, and strive to prepare new entrants for success in the commercial building industry.

MEETINGS

Attendees will also get to see first-hand a new training trailer being used by CSSI – Construction Safety Specialists, Inc. (As you know, CSSI is MBI’s preferred safety provider and has been serving the industry for over thirty years.) The CSSI training trailer will be on site at each regional meeting for all attendees to see how this new piece of training equipment can improve your company’s safety performance. You will be impressed by how this trailer can conveniently and effectively up your safety game.

We hope you and your entire team take advantage of this great member benefit. As an MBI member, there is no charge to attend any of the Regional Meetings, but you must register to reserve your seat. Please check the Events page of the MBI website to get signed up.

Looking forward to seeing you this fall at a Regional Meeting near you!

POWERED BY BUILDERS, DRIVEN BY ACTION

At Master Builders of Iowa, we believe our industry is more than just bricks, steel, and concrete—it is about people, purpose, and building something that lasts. That is why we are proud to unveil our new Strategic Plan for 2026–2030, a bold blueprint shaped by the voices of our members and designed to move Iowa’s construction industry forward with clarity and intention.

This plan is not just a document—it’s a call to action. With over 200 members contributing insights through surveys and conversations, the MBI team has crafted a strategy that reflects what matters most: growing a skilled and resilient workforce, amplifying our industry’s voice, investing in field leadership and wellness, and ensuring MBI delivers value to every corner of the state—from superintendents and project managers to trade partners and future talent.

The Plan is Built Around Four Strategic Pillars of Impact:

Workforce Development & Career Pathways that Attract, Recruit and Retain

Workforce Development & Career Pathways stand at the heart of our 2030 strategic vision. By attracting new talent, nurturing individual potential, and building meaningful career journeys, we are investing in people – the most powerful foundation of our industry’s success.

Advocacy, Branding & Industry Voice

Advocacy, Branding & Industry Voice reflects our members’ desire to elevate construction as a respected, influential force across Iowa.

Innovative Partnerships & Organizational Leadership

Innovative Partnerships & Organizational Leadership reflect our members’ call for a highperforming, forward-thinking association that leads with purpose and works collaboratively to amplify impact across the industry and beyond. To exceed member expectations, MBI must stay true to its vision, be responsive to member needs, and develop innovative partnerships to maximize impact.

Wellness & Industry Culture

Wellness & Industry Culture reflects our members’ growing commitment to prioritizing wellness - creating a culture where individuals feel supported, healthy, and inspired to thrive both on and off the job site.

MBI aims to be the central hub for Iowa’s commercial construction industry—leading in advocacy, education and resources. This plan is how we ensure Iowa’s commercial construction is ready for the future. It’s how we grow, lead, and elevate together—with accountability, innovation, and shared vision. Whether it is through enhanced field safety training, expanding access to wellness resources, or helping the next generation see a future in construction—MBI is committed to walking this path with you.

Master Builders of Iowa strives to be the essential resource for Iowa’s construction industry and a valuable component of that effort are those companies who support MBI’s programs and events. Through the exclusive Essential Partners recognition program, MBI strives to recognize our industry supporters, while adding value to those companies’ sponsorship dollars who take leadership roles in sponsoring MBI events and educational opportunities. Companies that are considered MBI’s Essential Partners have contributed over $5,000 in sponsorships to Master Builders of Iowa in the calendar year 2024. These companies are an important part of MBI’s success and we couldn’t do it without them!

Wellness into the

BUILDING FOUNDATION

The 8 Dimensions of Wellness & Suicide Prevention at MBI

At MBI, we know that performance doesn’t just come from hard skills—it comes from wholeperson wellness. That’s why we’re continuing to lead the way in embedding the 8 Dimensions of Wellness into every aspect of our training and culture initiatives. From emotional and occupational health to social connection and financial confidence, we believe that when individuals thrive, teams and companies do too.

This training will not only help leaders recognize signs of distress—it will empower teams to create a culture where people feel safe asking for help. Together with CIASP, we are working to normalize conversations around mental health, reduce stigma, and build an industry that prioritizes the well-being of every worker.

Because safety doesn’t stop at hard hats—it includes the hearts and minds of the people who build Iowa.

Thank you to our Partner! For More Resources!

As part of this commitment, we’re proud to announce a new partnership with the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention (CIASP) to offer suicide prevention training as an exclusive member benefit. CIASP is a national leader in mental health and suicide awareness for construction professionals, and this collaboration will give MBI members direct access to expert-led education, tools, and resources that can save lives.

For more on how to bring this training to your team, contact Tara Rinehart at TRinehart@MBI. Build, scan the QR code or visit our website at www.MBI.Build/Wellness.

Join us at The Lunch Club to hear first hand how the new partnership with CIASP will benefit you and your team!

The Shortcomings of Online Safety Training VS

What CSSI Can & Will Provide You

In recent years, online training platforms have grown popular, due to their convenience. They allow workers to complete OSHA 10 or 30-hour courses in their own time, often from a computer or mobile device. While that flexibility may appeal to employers trying to check compliance boxes quickly, it often falls short of preparing workers for the real hazards they will face.

By contrast, live, hands-on safety training—such as the programs offered by CSSI- delivers more than just information. It equips workers with practical skills, real-time feedback, and the ability to react under pressure. Safety is not theoretical; it is a lived experience. And that is where live training excels.

THE SHORTCOMINGS OF ONLINE SAFETY TRAINING

1. Low Engagement, Low Retention

Online training often reduces safety to a passive exercise—watching videos, clicking through slides, and answering multiple-choice quizzes. Without a live instructor, workers may disengage, treat the training as a task to complete, or multitask while it’s running in the background. This leads to low retention of critical information.

2. No Practical Application

Safety procedures like using fall protection, assembling scaffolds, or properly securing rigging equipment are inherently physical. You can’t learn the nuances of tying a choker hitch or using a trench box safely by watching a video. These skills require hands-on experience, where learners can make mistakes in a controlled environment, receive immediate corrections, and develop muscle memory.

3. Lack of Real-World Context

Online courses are designed for general audiences and cannot adapt to the unique hazards of a specific job site. Workers may walk away with basic knowledge but remain unprepared for the practical challenges they’ll face on the ground.

THE POWER OF LIVE, INSTRUCTOR-LED TRAINING

1. Real-Time Interaction and Customization

Online courses are designed for general audiences and cannot adapt to the unique hazards of a specific job site. Workers may walk away with basic knowledge but remain unprepared for the practical challenges they’ll face on the ground.

2. Hands-On Demonstrations and Practice

Nothing replaces the confidence gained from handling equipment directly. Whether it’s securing a harness, setting up a confined space tripod, or practicing lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, live training ensures workers know not just what to do but how to do it correctly.

3.

Enhanced Learning Retention

According to the National Training Laboratories, people retain up to 75% of what they learn by doing, compared to just 10% of what they read or 20% of what they hear. Hands-on exercises drive home lessons in a way no online quiz can.

CONCLUSION: THE HUMAN DIFFERENCE

Technology has transformed how we learn, but when it comes to construction safety, there’s no substitute for human connection and real-world practice. Online platforms may be convenient, but they cannot replicate the experience, confidence, and retention that live, hands-on training delivers.

At CSSI, we believe safety is not just about compliance; it’s about culture, accountability, and respect for the tradespeople who build our world. Our live training programs—and our mobile training trailer—are designed to ensure every worker gets the skills they need, not just the certificate.

For a conversation on building a comprehensive safety training strategy please contact Kim Hodne, CSSI's Managing Director at (907)-202-6299.

MBI

B

The MBI BuildHer program is back in 2026—and it is more focused on growing representation, equipping change agents, engaging allies, and elevating performance.

Designed to elevate women in Iowa’s construction industry, MBI BuildHer continues to equip participants with the tools, strategies, and support systems they need to lead with confidence—on the jobsite, in the office, and across their organizations. But in 2026, we’ve reimagined the format to meet our participants where they are: each in-person session is now a single, immersive full-day experience rather than two half-days.

Why the change? Convenience and impact. The new format allows for deeper learning, more dynamic interaction, and better use of participants’ time—with three engaging, statewide sessions held in Iowa City (April 2), Ames (Sept 24), and Cedar Rapids (Dec 3). Each session blends expert-led content with practical tools and peer learning on topics like gender-informed leadership, team communication, and inclusive problem-solving.

UILDHer

Program is Back!

We’ve also kept our three high-impact virtual sessions throughout the year to reinforce and apply what’s learned in the room. And don’t miss 2026’s signature event—PPE & Pints—a showcase of women’s safety gear and innovation, hosted by Amy Roosa with The Safety Rack following the Ames session.

BuildHer 2026 is more than a curriculum it’s a movement. Join us in shaping an industry where everyone has a voice, and every leader has the tools to succeed.

JULIE KNUDSON'S

Years of Service to the Industry

After 30 years of service to MBI, Julie Knudson announced her retirement as a Project Information Specialist.

For many years, Julie was the welcoming party for those subscribers to our Sioux City-based plan room. Her role was to assist contractors with the collection of project information for bidding and estimates. At that time, the Construction Update Plan Room Network had nine physical locations / plan rooms spread throughout the state to where plan room members / subscribers would come into these locations to review blueprints and spec books for an array of different projects.

As the times changed to where project information was available via online portals, so did Julie’s role. She was an important part of MBI’s plan room service transitioning from a physical location to a “virtual” plan room. Though the way contractors accessed information changed, Julie’s commitment to service did not. She always made sure all interested bidders had the most accurate and timely information at their fingertips and could easily access projects via the online portal of our plan room partner ConstructConnect (or “iSqFt” for those early adopters).

Julie focused primarily on western Iowa and eastern Nebraska projects and was an important connection between contractors, architects, engineers, and vendors. If there was a project to be bid on, you could be assured that Julie knew all the details related to that project.

We extend our deepest thanks to Julie for her years of dedicated service to MBI and the construction community.

"We wish her a long, happy, and rich retirement."

In the construction world, the best foundations aren’t just poured in concrete — they’re built through knowledge, growth, and experience. That’s exactly what the Master Builder Designation (MBD) program from MBI is all about.

This refreshed professional development program celebrates individuals who take learning seriously — whether you're just starting out or already deep into your career. By engaging in MBI’s training opportunities, you’ll build skills, grow professionally, and earn recognition for your efforts.

The MBD program has an updated structure. To earn the Master Builder Designation, participants complete 150 credits across the following categories:

Your Path to Growth , Recognition , and Leadership

These new requirements apply to everyone — whether you’re new to the program or already enrolled.

Finish your 150 credits by December 31, and you’ll be recognized at the MBI Winter Conference in February with the Master Builder Achievement Award — a prestigious honor designed to spotlight your commitment to excellence.

The Master Builder Designation isn’t just another goal — it’s a meaningful investment in your career and your company. By participating, you’ll:

• Foster a culture of lifelong learning

• Encourage development in critical skills areas

• Enjoy flexible, self-paced progress

• Boost career potential, your value, and visibility in the industry

For questions or additional information, contact Janel Haynes at JHaynes@MBI.Build or 515-461-9237.

Leadership is an ability, not a title and with the proper training and experience, anyone can be a leader from any position within an organization. The acquisition and development of leadership skills is critical for those individuals who want to have lasting careers in commercial construction serving as high performing leaders within their organization.

Elective credits can be earned from any or all of these training and professional development categories. Excess credits in the above categories will automatically be calculated into the Elective category.

Ethics is what separates Master Builders from the rest. Without ethical principles guiding the commercial construction industry, we would not be where we are today. To ensure that ethical principles remain a key component of the industry, individuals should participate in ethics workshops and activities toward becoming a high performing leader.

Ecological Construction is not a new concept. Commercial construction has always had an impact on the environment. When you consider air, soil, and water, construction company employees should be aware of the daily impact to the general public as well as the long term environmental impact their work creates.

Safety is at the heart of any good builder and is a cornerstone of Master Builders of Iowa. To be considered a Master Builder, an individual must acquire and develop the skills necessary to work or manage a project at a high level regarding safety.

Project Management is the responsibility of a host of individuals on a commercial construction project. Whether you are a senior leader, project manager, supervisor, or craftworker, there are skills within the broad context of project management that play a critical role in determining your success and that of the project.

YOUR CHOICE credits are flexible credits within the MBD Award program that allow participants to apply credits to any one of the 6 categories: Project Management, Ecological, Safety, Leadership, Ethics or Electives. Individuals communicate with MBI as to where they would like these placed as part of the 150 total credits needed to receive the award.

Strategies to Promote Recovery in the Workplace

Behavioral health has a major impact on construction company performance, including productivity, quality, risk management, safety, and profitability. Traditional approaches to addressing behavioral health in the workplace have not yielded improvements in care seeking among employees.

Drug-Free workplace policies and drug testing protocols set minimum expectations for workplace conduct. However, these policies and protocols have limitations, including creating stigma that creates barriers to workers seeking help for substance misuse and substance use disorder. Companies embracing the Recovery-Ready Workplace movement recognize that creating a stigma-free environment can provide pathways for recovery for workers and families seeking to address substance use, misuse, and substance use disorder.

A panel of subject matter experts will be assembled to help share key insights on building a recovery— ready workforce culture. Selected representatives from the following professions and/or organizations will include legal, Employee Assistance Program, addiction treatment and recovery counselor or peer support specialist, and/or community-based organizations.

CONSTRUCTION WEEK 2025

Make Sure to Put On Your Calendar!

The construction industry is advancing quickly, and that’s due to the people that work in the industry. They deserve all the praise and accolades for continuously raising the bar. Start the preparation now for how you and your employees will celebrate Construction Week 2025.

This year, Construction Week will be celebrated on October 6th-10th. As we have done in previous years, we’re planning to hold two different appreciation lunches and two different breakfasts on job sites yet to be determined. This will allow us to gather some press afterwards, and to show appreciation for the extremely valuable individuals in the construction industry.

As an MBI member, we are asking for your help to promote the men and women in your companies and the safe and effective job that they perform! Construction Week would not be possible without the dedication and effort of hardworking members like you. We’ve done a lot of work on the workforce front over the last several years, especially as it pertains to our MBI WORKS Fund and taking every opportunity, we can work with stakeholders to promote the industry. Growing the industry is a main focal point for us, but it’s equally important to take some time to shine a spotlight on those that make this industry stronger through the work that they do.

Please help spread awareness for Construction Week 2025 in any way that you can!

There are many ways for you and your company to get involved in celebrating Construction Week. All Construction Week resources can be found on the MBI website at www.MBI.Build/ConstructionWeek or scan the provided QR code, which will be updated regularly as more resources become available.

Any help you can provide in ramping up Construction Week 2025 would be helpful!

• Shine a spotlight on your exceptional field workers.

• Hold a company celebration (breakfast, lunch, break, or outing).

• Contact a local media outlet to speak about the importance of Construction Week.

• Get into a classroom and speak about rewarding careers.

• Request that Construction Week be added to everyone’s calendar in the office.

• Promote Construction Week on all your social media channels by using #ConstructionWeek25 and tag MBI.

Any additional ideas that you might have for promoting Construction Week 2025 would be greatly appreciated. Let us know how you plan to celebrate so we can continue to build on the successes of the past. We love hearing the new and innovative ways that you celebrate Construction Week. Have fun, get creative, and show our state that this is the best industry to be part of! Construction Week is a culmination of all the hard work that these individuals put in yearround, so let’s take the time to celebrate these amazing people!

PEOPLE DON'T LEAVE COMPANIES

" "

THEY LEAVE PERSONALITIES

Reprinted from https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanleak/

Ryan Leak wants you to rethink workplace culture, one relationship at a time.

Based on our research on working with complicated people, 48 percent of people would willingly take a lower-paying job just to avoid working with complicated people. That means peace of mind at work is now worth real money. People are not just leaving companies. They are leaving personalities. Culture has officially become a currency.

This finding isn’t just interesting. It’s a wake-up call for leaders. Compensation alone is not enough to retain talent. If the workplace environment is filled with drama, micromanagement, passive aggression, or unresolved tension, your best people may choose peace over pay. Not because they are weak, but because they are wise.

We have an opportunity to shift our culture. Leaders at every level can start by asking better questions. How safe do people feel to speak up here? Are unresolved conflicts quietly stealing our energy? Are we investing in emotional intelligence as much as technical skills? Workplace health does not improve by accident. It improves with intention.

People will work hard. They will stretch themselves. They will stay loyal. But they need to feel respected. They need to feel seen. And most of all, they need to feel like they are not walking on eggshells. Let’s build cultures people want to stay in, not escape from.

If this hits a little too close to home, you’re not alone.

Ryan Leak will be a featured keynote speaker at MBI’s Winter Conference in 2026! And his new book How to Work with Complicated People is full of insights and strategies to help you navigate workplace tension with clarity, courage, and a little more sanity.

The program was designed to recognize those individuals who demonstrated leadership qualities and offered participants an opportunity to continue their journey of success by developing the skillsets to take their leadership influence to the next level.

Here are some interesting facts about the highly revered MB EYE on the Future Program:

This is the only program at MBI where you must be nominated and then accepted through a selection committee.

There have been 21 classes that have participated in the 6-month program.

411 MBI member employees have graduated from the program

Each class elects 1 individual to serve a term on the Board as an MB EYE Representative (This has recently changed from serving 1 year to a 2-year term.)

19 past graduates have or are serving on the MBI Board of Directors as full 4-year term Board Members

11 members of our current Board of Directors are past graduates of this program (including our 2 MB EYE on the Future class representatives)

BIG MPACT Small Things

Liz Bohannon shares why connection is the secret to workplace productivity.

Reprinted from https://www.linkedin.com/in/liz-forkin-bohannon

I'm starting to see some research with practical applications regarding loneliness in the workplace emerge. (Yay! Did you know that employees who have at least one close friendship at work are 7x more engaged and productive in their work?)

None of their suggestions are rocket science, which I love- because that means it is accessible. Among other findings, this research just published in the Harvard Business Review confirms that the most significant gains are often found in the "small things" done with consistency, commitment, and gusto from the top.

Shared lunch. (Bonus points if the employer provides lunch!)

Meeting time (in person or virtual) dedicated to connecting on a personal level.

Happy Hours. (And as a working parent, I am a huge advocate of activities that start before the end of a normal workday, so I can still make kid pickup times and eat dinner around the table with my family!)

Connections in the workplace are important. So is supporting healthy connections and relationships outside of work!

Liz Bohannon will be a featured keynote speaker at MBI’s 2026 Winter Conference! Be the first to register for her keynote when we release registration in January!

BE WILLING TO BE WEIRD

Reprinted with permission from https://fearlessinside.com/post/

Over the years, I’ve begun to embrace being different and not being like the rest of the crowd. My closest friends will often call me weird, and my answer back is usually, “I know, we’ve been through this already, what are we going to do now?”

I take so much pride in being me and want to encourage you to do the same, and it does get easier with age.

We’ve all been created differently, and it’s easy to lose pieces of ourselves to fit in at times. To do what your friends are doing, and to do what is comfortable. I’m often amazed at those of you who are defying the odds in your lives, organizations, and going against what’s considered “normal.”

I’ve always loved reading and can remember in middle school reading some of the classic business books of our time, frequently choosing those books over “playing outside.”

I can say many of those lessons I learned from those books have propelled me with the mindset to get where I am now, sharing my message with you.

I can imagine you might be reading this message and thinking something is wrong with you because you might not want to go out tonight, or maybe you don’t want to drink, or you don’t enjoy doing ___________, and those around you do.

My advice is this, and it’s from my boy Steve Jobs, he said: “We can’t connect the dots looking forward, only backward, so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect.”

Looking back, these moments in your life will make so much more sense later when you look back.

In my life

–The dots where I’ve thought differently have paid off for me.

–The dots where I’ve taken risks that were uncomfortable at the time have paid off for me.

–The dots where I’ve challenged the process and had tough conversations have paid off for me.

Please, please don’t beat yourself for being different and thinking differently than those around you. Being different and standing out from the crowd will often get you noticed by those that are outside of your crowd.

FROM ONE WEIRD PERSON TO ANOTHER, BE WEIRD.

Meet you at the top!

Darryl Bellamy Jr. will be a featured keynote speaker at MBI’s 2026 Winter Conference!

A Sneak Peek at the CONFERENCE 2026 WINTER

Mark your calendars—MBI’s 2026 Annual Winter Conference is shaping up to be our boldest and most dynamic yet! Held at the Iowa Events Center in the heart of downtown Des Moines, this two-day experience will bring together hundreds of industry leaders, professionals, and emerging talent for an unforgettable mix of education, connections, and celebration.

With 20+ breakout sessions, this year’s agenda is packed with leadership insights, technical expertise, and meaningful moments for professionals across all levels and roles. Whether you’re focused on field operations, business strategy, workforce culture, or tech-forward innovation, there is something here for you.

This year, we’re taking things up a notch. Our signature Build Iowa Breakfast will open Tuesday morning with the celebration of our Build Iowa Award recipient, followed by an unforgettable keynote from Ben Nemtin—New York Times bestselling author and star of

The Buried Life. Ben’s inspiring journey of chasing 100 impossible goals (and helping others do the same) is more than a story—it is a roadmap for turning purpose into performance. His message will remind us that uncertainty is not something to fear—it is a launchpad for transformation. Get ready to create your bucket list.

Later that day, we’ll gather for a reimagined Industry Excellence Celebration Luncheon, where we recognize the people, projects, and partners who continue to elevate Iowa’s commercial construction industry. Immediately following the luncheon, a special session will be offered by registration only. We welcome keynote speaker Ryan Leak, author of How to Work with Complicated People, for a deep-dive session on navigating workplace relationships with clarity and confidence. His engaging and often humorous teaching style will help leaders of all levels better communicate, collaborate, and lead through complexity. This exclusive session will require advance registration, so do not miss out. We will have a limited number of seats. (For more information on Ryan Leak visit - page 40.)

We will kick off Day 2 at the Built to Perform Breakfast with Liz Bohannon, entrepreneur, author, and TED speaker. Liz brings a transformative message on the power of social health how fostering connection, vulnerability, and purpose can change not just your workplace, but your life. This session is not just about inspiration—it’s about building the practical skills needed to create high-trust, highperformance teams.

We’ll close the conference with the Power Up with Purpose Luncheon featuring Darryl Bellamy Jr., a high-energy speaker who helps professionals navigate fear, change, and uncertainty with courage. In an era of constant disruption, Darryl shows us how to turn anxiety into action and fear into fuel. You will walk away

Joins the CSSI Team!

What started as a “wouldn’t it be cool if…” concept has emerged as a new way to deliver safety training to companies and jobsites throughout Iowa and the Midwest. The Board of Directors of Construction Safety Specialists, Inc. (CSSI) recently approved funding to retrofit a trailer with safety training equipment.

M.A.T.T. (the Mobile Advanced Training Trailer) will complement CSSI’s long-held belief that interactive, hands-on training is the best for retention and safety competence. Field worker training is most effective when there is an immersive curriculum outside the classroom and away from a computer screen. The CSSI leadership team is confident that the retrofitted trailer will provide a much better learning environment.

Now is the perfect time to plan your fall and winter training by reserving a date for M.A.T.T. to arrive at a location that works best for you and your construction team.

To learn more about CSSI’s training curriculum and M.A.T.T., please contact Managing Director Kim Hodne at Kim@IowaCSSI.com or Director of Training and Education, Brandon Black at Brandon@IowaCSSI.com.

Now, the CSSI team can utilize M.A.T.T. to conveniently bring both competent person and awareness training for:
