La selezione biennale di giovani fotografi promossa e organizzata da G.D e dal gruppo Coesia giunge quest’anno alla quinta edizione in una veste rinnovata, a partire dal nome.

Nata alcuni anni fa per sostenere i talenti emergenti della fotografia e al tempo stesso dare inizio, attraverso la promozione e l’acquisizione delle opere dei partecipanti, a una raccolta di visioni contemporanee dell’industria e del lavoro, la competizione è stata ideata e portata avanti quando l’identità, la funzione e il significato della Fondazione MAST, nonché l’edificio che la ospita, prendevano progressivamente forma.

Oggi il MAST, inaugurato nel 2013, è un centro culturale dalla fisionomia definita, riconosciuto a livello internazionale per il suo modello di welfare, la sua collezione di fotografia dell’industria e del lavoro e il suo programma di mostre ed eventi proposti al pubblico – conferenze, conversazioni, proiezioni di film e documentari, percorsi e laboratori per bambini e ragazzi. Ci sembra quindi giusto accogliere il concorso in seno a una realtà consolidata, che dedica gran parte dei suoi spazi e delle sue attività artistiche alla fotografia del lavoro.

Per questo motivo il concorso GD4PHOTOART diventa MAST Foundation for Photography Grant.

Pur mantenendo lo stesso regolamento e le medesime aspirazioni, l’iniziativa si propone come un premio e una borsa di studio insieme. L’enfasi infatti è sulla parola grant, che sta ad indicare non solo un riconoscimento per il

lavoro svolto, ma soprattutto una risorsa per sviluppare un nuovo progetto.

Ciò che rimane immutato è lo spirito del concorso: dare voce alla ricerca fotografica delle nuove generazioni di artisti arricchendo l’offerta culturale della Fondazione MAST di spunti inediti legati agli sguardi dei giovani sul mondo dell’industria e del lavoro, sulle rapidissime trasformazioni in atto a livello economico e produttivo e sulle implicazioni ambientali, sociali, etiche, geografiche che questi cambiamenti determinano nella vita di tutti noi.

Lasciamoci guidare quindi dallo sguardo di Mari Bastashevski, Sara Cwynar, Sohei Nishino e Cristóbal Olivares e scopriamo i loro progetti: gli oscuri interessi economici legati agli stati di crisi, la percezione dei colori come imposizione dell’industria cosmetica, il viaggio alla scoperta della psico-geografia della Pianura Padana e dei suoi abitanti, i viaggi disperati degli immigrati dominicani clandestini diretti in Cile. Si tratta di progetti complessi, realizzati con media diversi e modalità espositive eterogenee (stampe fotografiche, collage, wallpaper, documenti cartacei, video), che riflettono la complessità del nostro tempo e ci spingono a interrogarci sul mondo in cui viviamo.

The biennial selection of young photographers promoted and organised by G.D and the Coesia group has arrived at its fifth edition with a new guise, starting from its name.

Founded several years ago to support emerging talent in photography and to launch, by promoting and purchasing the participants’ works, a collection of contemporary visions of industry and labour, the competition was conceived and developed when the identity, function and meaning of the MAST Foundation, as well as the building that hosts it, were gradually taking shape.

Inaugurated in 2013, MAST today is a cultural center with a defined character, internationally recognized for its welfare model, its photography collection that deals with industry and labor and the program of exhibitions and events offered to the public—conferences, talks, screenings of films and documentaries, learning projects and workshops for children and teenagers. Therefore, it seems appropriate to include the competition within a consolidated reality which devotes much of its space and artistic activities to labour photography.

For this reason, the GD4PHOTOART competition becomes MAST Foundation for Photography Grant.

While maintaining the same rules and the same aspirations, the initiative is both a prize and a grant. The emphasis is definitely on the word grant, which indicates not only recognition for the work accomplished, but first and foremost a resource for developing a new project.

What remains unchanged is the spirit of the competition: giving voice to research in photography by the new generations of artists, enriching the MAST Foundation cultural offer with brand new works that are young people’s visions of the worlds of industry and labour, insights of the very rapid transformations taking place in economy and production and of the environmental, social, ethical and geographical implications that these changes determine in all of our lives.

So, let us follow the gazes of Mari Bastashevski, Sara Cwynar, Sohei Nishino and Cristóbal Olivares and examine their projects: the obscure economic interests related to states of crisis, the perception of colours imposed by the cosmetics industry, the exploration of the psycho-geography of the Po Valley and of its inhabitants, the desperate journeys of clandestine Dominican immigrants to Chile.

These are complex projects, created with mixed media and articulated exhibition displays (photographic prints, collages, wallpaper, paper documents, videos), which reflect the complexity of our times and compel us to question the world in which we live.

— Nella fotografia che esplora l’industria, la tecnologia, il lavoro e la società, la Fondazione MAST, attiva da quattro anni, è diventata un’istituzione estremamente attiva e dinamica.

La MAST PhotoGallery, la Collezione MAST, la Biennale di Fotografia dell’Industria e del Lavoro (Foto/Industria), nonché le conferenze, le conversazioni, le tavole rotonde e le proiezioni di film sono testimonianza di un’attenzione approfondita e diversificata per i temi legati a industria e lavoro, industria e società, industria e territorio, con uno sguardo che è al contempo rivolto al passato, al presente e a un futuro che non potrebbe essere più incerto. L’attuale progresso scientifico e tecnologico infatti sta introducendo con grande rapidità nuovi scenari nel mondo della produzione e del lavoro.

Tuttavia, la Fondazione MAST non si limita ad avvalersi dell’opera dei tanti artisti e fotografi che si confrontano con questi temi. Da alcuni anni Isabella Seràgnoli promuove anche un

concorso rivolto a giovani fotografi e fotografe.

Inizialmente presentato con il nome GD4PhotoArt, da questa edizione l’iniziativa si chiamerà MAST Foundation for Photography Grant on Industry and Work. Il concorso è al tempo stesso un premio e una borsa di studio. Le regole della competizione prevedono che i candidati, di età inferiore ai quarant’anni, siano proposti da un gruppo internazionale di esperti del settore.

L’invito a partecipare al concorso viene rivolto a 40-50 giovani fotografi, che sono tenuti a presentare un portfolio e un progetto di lavoro.

La giuria seleziona una rosa di quattro finalisti, a cui viene assegnata una borsa di studio per portare avanti il progetto presentato. Alla vigilia dell’inaugurazione della mostra, la giuria si riunisce di nuovo per valutare i lavori e decretare il vincitore, destinatario di un premio ulteriore.

Con questo concorso, la Fondazione MAST intende sostenere l’indagine di giovani artisti e fotografi sui temi dell’industria, della tecnologia, del territorio e del lavoro. Dobbiamo continuamente prendere atto di quanto siano scarse le nostre conoscenze sul mondo dell’invenzione e della scoperta scientifica, sullo sviluppo, la produzione, il marketing e la vendita di macchine e prodotti, quanto limitate la diffusione e la circolazione di immagini provenienti dai settori della ricerca, della progettazione, dello sviluppo e della produzione. Amiamo i prodotti, amiamo delineare un’immagine di noi stessi attraverso il loro acquisto e in generale amiamo l’auto-rappresentazione, come Internet mostra quotidianamente.

Molto meno ci interessa conoscere il mondo della produzione, sebbene siano proprio le immagini di questa realtà a permetterci di avvicinarci, da un punto di vista sia contenutistico sia emozionale, alle evoluzioni, alle trasformazioni e alle rivoluzioni che avvengono nell’universo del lavoro.

A grandi passi, la ricerca, la tecnologia e la finanza hanno reso astratto il nostro mondo. In settori di fondamentale importanza, esso sembra perdere gran parte della sua chiarezza e accessibilità e allontanarsi sempre di più dai nostri codici di lettura, al punto che non riusciamo più neanche a immaginare determinati e fondamentali aspetti del progresso scientifico e tecnologico. Tanto più importante ed essenziale diventa allora visualizzare questa realtà: solo restituendola attraverso

le immagini possiamo tentare di seguirne i percorsi, di comprendere gli aspetti più radicali della digitalizzazione, l’apertura di nuovi ambiti, nuove conoscenze e nuovi modelli di finanziamento. E la comprensione del mondo è condizione primaria ed essenziale per l’esistenza di un cittadino adulto e responsabile in una società libera e democratica.

Bertolt Brecht interveniva fin dal 1931 sul problema di ciò che la fotografia può fare. La situazione, scrive Brecht “si complica per il fatto che meno che mai una semplice ‘riproduzione della realtà’ dice qualcosa sulla realtà. Una fotografia delle officine Krupp o della AEG non rivela quasi nulla di tali istituzioni. La realtà vera è scivolata nel funzionale1”.

La realtà è scivolata nella funzionalità, secondo Brecht, e non è più accessibile attraverso la semplice osservazione. E chiude con una considerazione che viene di solito omessa, pur essendo di centrale importanza: “La reificazione dei rapporti umani, quali ad esempio si instaurano nella fabbrica, non restituisce più questi rapporti.

Bisogna quindi ‘costruire qualcosa’, qualcosa di ‘artificiale’, di ‘studiato’”2. Ebbene sì, bisogna costruire qualcosa, altrimenti la visualizzazione non funziona. Bisogna mettere in scena qualcosa, metterlo in relazione, svilupparlo. Se già nei decenni successivi la fotografia classica si trovò di fronte a una grande sfida, nel mondo di oggi tutto è diventato molto più difficile, molto più complesso. Mostrare l’essenziale, rilevare gli aspetti strutturali, cogliere nelle immagini il sapere astratto e l’essenza del comportamento umano – ricercare, indagare, sviluppare e produrre – fornire una rappresentazione fotografica che renda possibile e accessibile sia l’aspetto informativo che quello emozionale, il dato concreto e il significato, il piano descrittivo e quello metaforico: è questo il grande compito dei giovani fotografi di oggi. Ed è questo compito che il MAST Foundation for Photography Grant intende sostenere.

Ognuno dei quattro finalisti si propone in modo originale di affrontare uno specifico campo di interesse.

Mari Bastashevski crea complesse, intense installazioni fatte di fotografie, documenti, testi e interviste con cui indaga diverse forme

17 di “affari di stato”(State Business). Studia “la relazione tra funzionari statali e aziende che alimentano e sostengono le crisi nello status quo, dove la violenza assurge ad abituale norma di comportamento”. L’artista espone qui l’ultimo capitolo della sua indagine, Emergency Managers, dedicato alla crisi idrica della città di Flint che ebbe inizio nel 2013-2014, quando le fonti di approvvigionamento dell’acqua potabile furono trasferite da Detroit alla città stessa e al fiume Flint. La chiusura del contratto di fornitura in vigore da anni con Detroit e il passaggio a una propria rete di approvvigionamento furono progettati e realizzati in modo così sconsiderato che una parte della popolazione afroamericana fu contaminata dal piombo; con il risultato che dal 2016, e presumibilmente fino al 2020, la popolazione di Flint può bere soltanto acqua imbottigliata. Nel suo lavoro, Mari Bastahevski discute varie forme di gestione della crisi sul lungo periodo, che si rivelano tutte a vantaggio dei manager dello stato di crisi, dei funzionari pubblici e dei gruppi industriali che ad essi sono legati.

Con un video e nove fotografie Sara Cwynar affronta il tema del colore, dei sistemi tintometrici e dell’industria dei colori e dei cosmetici che vi si cela dietro. È lei stessa a fornire una precisa descrizione del suo lavoro: “Questo progetto consiste in un video dal titolo Colour Factory ed esplora la produzione commerciale del colore e la sua standardizzazione in relazione a temi quali la teoria del colore e il femminismo. Girato in 16 mm su vari set, un’azienda di cosmetici, uno stabilimento tipografico e il mio studio di New York, il film esamina le diverse modalità in cui soggettività e colore si intrecciano. Oltre al testo di un tutorial che ci guida nell’esecuzione di un make-up perfetto, la voce fuori campo cita testi di Ludwig Wittgenstein, David Batchelor, Henri Matisse e altri filosofi e artisti che hanno analizzato il modo in cui gli esseri umani vedono i colori. Il tema è dunque la soggettività della percezione del colore, sempre diversa per ciascun individuo. I concetti di verità e differenza nella percezione si connettono poi a una narrativa più personale collegata alla soggettività femminile.

Il film si pone molteplici interrogativi: quali dinamiche di potere sono collegate all’uso e

alla riproduzione del colore e del make-up nella nostra cultura? Se la nostra percezione dei colori fondamentali può essere ‘erronea’, a quali altre illusioni percettive siamo soggetti? Chi decide quali sono gli standard più accettabili per colori e cosmetici?” Sara Cwynar conclude con l’affermazione: “Nulla è casuale”. Così come il video, anche le fotografie sollevano interrogativi sulla produzione di certezze e convinzioni nel contesto dei meccanismi di produzione e consumo, indagando la scomparsa degli standard condivisi, degli stili, dei linguaggi pubblicitari. “In definitiva, il progetto è incentrato sugli standard del colore, della bellezza e del capitalismo, in quanto modelli imposti nell’esperienza della vita umana”. C’è qualcuno che decide; gli standard vengono fissati da un’azienda, un gruppo economico, un’autorità. Un campo che continua a essere fortemente determinato dallo sguardo maschile sulle donne.

Sohei Nishino ha realizzato, nel corso degli ultimi dieci anni, una serie di opere a metà strada tra la mappa e il diorama, complesse composizioni di immagini di città, tra cui Amsterdam, San Francisco, Tokyo, Johannesburg, Gerusalemme, Nuova Delhi, ecc. Si tratta di opere costituite da molti elementi e costruite su una logica contraddittoria. Da un lato si ha la sensazione di osservare dall’alto la mappa di una città, dall’altro la stessa mappa brulica di istantanee dal carattere molto privato, scattate da Sohei Nishino durante le sue peregrinazioni in città.

Sono centinaia, migliaia di fotografie a costruire la rappresentazione della città – oppure, in questo caso, del corso del Po dalla sorgente al Delta. La mappa presuppone precisione, oggettività e una verticalità dell’osservazione, mentre il diorama, che nel XVIII secolo aveva una funzione didattica e di svago, ha lo scopo di vivificare una scena, di infonderle vita, di rappresentare le situazioni in un'ottica tridimensionale. Sohei Nishino mescola le due forme, combina insieme micro- e macroprospettiva fino a ricavare un’indagine e una rappresentazione vivacissima e poetica del fiume, inteso come condizione fondamentale per l’esistenza di un insediamento e persino di ogni forma di vita umana.

Il progetto The Desert di Cristóbal Olivares ha per tema i fenomeni migratori in atto dalla

Repubblica Dominicana verso il Cile. Sembra che circa 30.000 persone abbiano già lasciato la loro terra e che circa 15.000 di loro siano entrati illegalmente in Cile. Olivares scrive: “Ai dominicani viene richiesto un visto speciale per entrare come turisti, e questo li rende facili prede dei trafficanti, da cui sistematicamente vengono ingannati, derubati e abusati psicologicamente e sessualmente. La maggior parte viene intercettata nel paese d’origine tramite offerte di viaggio che comprendono visti contraffatti, itinerari di dieci giorni tra voli in aereo, bus e lunghi percorsi a piedi attraverso il deserto, ai confini tra Perù, Bolivia e Cile, dove le principali minacce sono costituite da campi minati, da montagne che superano i 3800 metri di altitudine e dalle temperature estreme, sia di giorno sia di notte”.

Olivares ingrandisce le sue fotografie di paesaggio, spesso vuote, e ne fa degli sfondi che vengono appesi direttamente alla parete. Sopra, di fianco o accanto inserisce i ritratti incorniciati dei migranti; si tratta di foto di piccole dimensioni, scattate sempre lateralmente e da dietro, nella posizione diametralmente opposta a quella in uso nella classica tipologia del ritratto.

Le figure appaiono curve, col viso rivolto in basso, come se i viaggiatori cercassero di proteggersi dal vento, dalle intemperie o dai brutti incontri.

Nei video, raccontano le loro peregrinazioni mostrando le foto dei cellulari, ma parlano anche della loro vita a casa, quella casa che hanno lasciato per cercare una vita migliore.

— The MAST Foundation, opened four years ago, has become an institution active in a multitude of ways in the field of photography of industry, technology, work and society. The MAST PhotoGallery, the MAST Collection, the MAST Biennale of Photography on Industry and Work (Foto/ Industria), the program of lectures, conversations, discussions and film projections held in the Auditorium are all evidence of a nuanced, penetrating consideration of the topics industry and work, industry and society, with a view to

the past, the present and into a future that could hardly be more uncertain. Current scientific and technological developments are leading, at breakneck speed, to new realities of production and work.

Yet it is not only MAST that benefits from the many industrial photographers and artists who engage with these topics: a few years ago, Isabella Seràgnoli also launched a prize for young photographers. Initially entitled GD4PhotoArt, as of the publication of this issue it is now named MAST Foundation for Photography Grant on Industry and Work. It is a grant and prize in one.

The first step in the competition’s procedure is that photographers, who must be under 40 years of age, are nominated by international experts to present a project and their portfolio.

The jury subsequently selects four names for the shortlist, who receive a grant to carry out the idea they have submitted. Finally, before the opening of the exhibition, the jury convenes again to evaluate the works and appoint the winner, who receives a further prize.

Through this competition, MAST supports young photographers and artists who are engaging with the areas of industry, technology, territory and work. We see again and again how little we know about invention, research, development, production, marketing, and sales of machines, of products, how little the images from these fields spread. We love the product, we love to reflect ourselves in the purchase of products, and we love self-representation in general. The Internet makes this clear to us every day. However, we want to know far less about the world of production, although it is precisely these images that are capable of showing us the development, the change, the revolutions in the many worlds of work, both in terms of content and emotion.

The strides of technological research and the financial economy have turned our world into an abstract. In areas of crucial relevance it appears to have lost so much clarity and to have distanced itself from our natural senses that we can no longer even imagine significant aspects of scientific and technological progress. Thus the visualisations of this world become ever more important and central; only by means of

19 images are we capable of following the paths, the radicalisations in digitisation, the opening up of new spheres, new knowledge, new financial models. For comprehension of the world is the be-all and end-all of a mature citizen in a free democratic world.

Bertolt Brecht’s famous quotation on the question of what photography can do, formulated the problem at an early stage, in 1931: “The situation becomes so complicated because of it that now a simple “reflection of reality” says less than ever before about reality. A photograph of the Krupp factories or of AEG reveals almost nothing about these institutions.

Actual reality has slipped into the functional.”¹ Reality has slipped into functionality, he wrote, simply looking no longer reveals anything of it.

He then concluded with the comment that is usually left out by those who quote him: “The reification of human relationships, such as the factory, does not release the latter. So there is really ‘something to build,’ something ‘artificial,’ something ‘staged.’”² Indeed, something does need to be constructed, otherwise the visualisation does not work. Indeed, something does need to be staged, to be interrelated, to be developed.

Even classical photography found itself already confronted with a huge challenge in the following decades, and it has become even more complex, even more difficult in the world today. Showing fundamentals, recording structures, capturing abstract knowledge in images, the most essential of human behaviour, researching, investigating, developing, producing, visualising in images, so that both information and emotion, facts and implications, description and picture are possible and permissible: that is the great task for young photographers today. And that is what the grant of the MAST Foundation is supporting with the means it has at its command.

The four finalists take a very personal approach in accordance with their respective fields.

In her dense, complex installation with photographs, documents, texts and interviews Mari Bastashevski discusses different forms of “state business.” She discusses “the relationship between state officials and companies that fuel and sustain the crises in status quo and makes violence a norm.” Here, she displays the new

chapter—Emergency Managers—of her chosen controversy. It concerns the “Flint water crisis,” which began 2013-2014 when the provision of drinking water from Detroit to Flint was transferred to the “Flint” river. The withdrawal from a long-standing contract with Detroit and the transfer to a domestic water provision system was so poorly planned and realised that many of the African-American population experienced lead poisoning. The consequence is that since 2016 Flint’s population can only drink bottled water, a situation that is likely to continue until 2020. In her work, Bastashevski presents different forms of long-term crisis management, which only serves to benefit officials and managers, and the companies with which they are closely affiliated.

In her video and nine photographs, Sara Cwynar examines the topic of colour, the colour system and the dye and cosmetics industry that lies behind it. She describes her project in the following precise way: “This project, entitled Colour Factory, explores the standardisation and commercial production of colour, connected through themes of feminism and colour theory.

Filmed in a makeup factory, a printing plant, and my studio in New York, the 16mm film looks at the ways in which subjectivity and color are intertwined. The voiceover uses text from how-to make up application guides, from Ludwig Wittgenstein, David Batchelor, Henri Matisse, and other philosophers and artists who have theorised how humans see colour. The film explores the subjectivity of looking at colour – how it is never the same for each person. These notions of truth and difference in perception are connected to a more personal narrative about female subjectivity. The work asks questions such as, what power dynamics are bound up in the use and reproduction of colour and makeup in our culture? If our perception of basic colours could be ‘wrong,’ what else are we wrong about? And who decides what standards are accepted for colour and cosmetics?" And she concludes with the statement: "Nothing is an accident.” Like the video, Cwynar’s photographs raise questions about the production of certainty, of conviction in the context of production and consumption, about the disappearance of standards, styles and

advertising languages. “At its heart the project is about the ways that standards of colour, beauty and capitalism impose themselves on lived human experience.” Somebody decides, a company, a corporation, an agency standardises. This field continues to be strongly characterised by the gaze of men on women.

In the last ten years, Sohei Nishino has produced a series of “diorama maps,” complex image compositions of cities—Amsterdam, San Francisco, Tokyo, Johannesburg, Jerusalem, New Delhi, etc. The works are multipartite and structured in a highly controversial way. On the one hand, we have the feeling of looking down onto a city map from above; on the other hand, as a basis, Nishino fills the map with his very personal snapshots, which he takes as he is walking through the city. Hundreds, thousands of photographs with which he reconstructs the geographic context or, in this case, the Po river— from its source right up to the Po Delta. A map suggests vertical surveillance, great precision and objectivity, while a diorama—a site of both entertainment and education in the 19th century— aims to bring scenes to life, to breathe life into them, to present situations in three dimensions.

Nishino mixes these two forms, combining macro and micro perspectives to produce a very lively, poetic investigation and representation of the river as the basis for settlement, as the basis for every form of human life.

Cristóbal Olivares’ project The Desert examines the migration from the Dominican Republic to Chile. Around 30,000 people are said to have left their home country already and around 15,000 of them entered Chile illegally. Olivares writes: “Dominicans are required to have a special visa to enter as tourists, which has made them an easy target for smugglers. They are deceived, robbed, extorted and psychologically and sexually abused.

Most are intercepted in their own countries where they receive travel offers which include counterfeit visas, more than 10-day itineraries on airplanes, buses and long walks through the desert on the borders between Peru, Bolivia and Chile where the biggest threats are minefields, heights of more than 3,800 meters above sea level and extreme temperatures during the day and night.” Olivares enlarges his frequently

empty landscape photographs on wallpaper that is pasted directly onto the wall. In it, on it or next to it he places the much smaller framed portraits of the migrants, who are always photographed from the side and behind, diagonally as if from the reverse side of a classical portrait.

Turning away, crouching, as if the travellers are protecting themselves from the wind and the weather and against unpleasant encounters.

In the videos they use pictures on their smart phones to tell us about their wanderings, but also about their life at home, which they left behind with the aim of a better life.

Questa dichiarazione segue un corteo di reificazioni del colore rosso che attraversano lo schermo – prodotti di serie, come gli stivali rossi da wonder-woman, lo smalto rosso granata, il rossetto rosso sangue, tutti ripresi durante il loro processo di produzione. Ciascun oggetto scandisce abilmente la meditazione in forma di flusso di coscienza di Sara Cwynar sulla relazione che intercorre tra il colore e la nostra idea di bellezza e artificio.

La produzione industriale del colore si riferisce all’elemento soggettivo reso tangibile e replicabile. Dal desiderio di ritrarre “accuratamente” persone e prodotti nella pittura e nella fotografia a colori, al proposito di evocare e capitalizzare le ultime tendenze di colore nel campo del make-up, dell’abbigliamento e di altri articoli commerciali, intere industrie hanno centuplicato i loro sforzi al fine di ottenere un prodotto costante.

Questo vale per tutti i settori legati all’imaging e all’ottica, ma le cose si complicano non poco nel mondo della moda, della bellezza e della cosmesi, un mondo principalmente orientato al genere femminile. La standardizzazione del colore continua a evolversi basandosi su presupposti mutevoli e pregiudizi sociologici legati al tempo e al luogo della sua produzione. Chi merita di essere ritratto e come? Cosa costituisce la bellezza femminile e chi ne ha il controllo? Queste importanti domande sono formulate a chiare lettere negli oggetti più piccoli e apparentemente insignificanti.

In Colour Factory, che comprende un cortometraggio e diversi lavori fotografici, Cwynar si serve di una serie di artefatti per esaminare in dettaglio i sistemi profondamente radicati che inconsciamente guidano i nostri comportamenti come consumatori di immagini e prodotti commerciali. Due immagini di Tracy, musa dell’artista, ci rimandano al lavoro di ricerca dei produttori di pellicola fotografica, che mirano a riprodurre con le qualità di colore “più appropriate” le varie tonalità della pelle. L’enorme griglia di colori che fa da sfondo a Tracy in posa, riprodotta con estrema intensità e saturazione, suggerisce in modo sottile una parodia del processo di valutazione delle “giuste” tonalità della pelle. La natura eccessiva di queste immagini è in sintonia con i risultati di uno studio del 1960, Memory Colors of Familiar Objects, di C.J. Bartelson, ricercatore della Kodak, nel quale si evidenziava come a livello di memoria percettiva dei colori più ricorrenti nell’esperienza quotidiana, le persone siano portate a enfatizzare le caratteristiche cromatiche primarie1. E quindi l’erba veniva ricordata di un verde particolarmente vivido; il cielo decisamente più blu; la pelle caucasica

25 di tonalità più rosea. Tracy in posa davanti alla griglia di colori trascende e affonda in memorie simultanee: quella di Tracy come individuo; Tracy riferimento di colore; Tracy rappresentante della tonalità di pelle asiatica o comunque “diversa”; Tracy rivelatrice delle possibilità del consumatore.

In una differente versione fotografica dedicata al lancio pubblicitario di un prodotto, Cwynar immortala l’astuccio di un rossetto e la bomboletta spray di un cosmetico. Entrambi gli oggetti sono stati fusi in bronzo e fotografati sullo sfondo di un cielo in due tonalità di azzurro notevolmente diverse. Si tratta di articoli pronti per l’uso resi inservibili in seguito a questo procedimento - manufatti di precedenti epoche commerciali, industriali. Quello sfondo azzurro che si trasforma sottolinea ulteriormente l’instabilità della riproduzione dei colori e della memoria. Allo stesso modo, nella rielaborazione di immagini attinte da un catalogo di prodotti cosmetici (Forty Fabulous Shades to Make Women’s Hands More Beautiful!) Cwynar dissolve una serie di foto dei prodotti in composizioni in cui inserisce foto più piccole e autoreferenziali di mani femminili che lavorano con impegno per essere più belle. È un altro genere di immagini, ma sempre in linea con lo sguardo costante di Cwynar sull’estetica utilitaristica e modernista della produzione industriale. La monotona ripetizione dei colori standardizzati, l’azzurro cielo e l’arancione lavoriin-corso, i nostalgici verde menta e grigio delle macchine evocano il lavoro e il modo di lavorare di un’epoca passata, di imprese tradizionalmente maschili. Le palette di colori e le linee classiche del lavoro e del capitalismo industriale sono racchiuse e leggibili in queste forme, anche se coperte da una patina di polvere. Le dense stratificazioni di significato che racchiudono l’atto del “fare” e dell’“essere fatto” vengono effettivamente messe in scena e riportate in superficie in ciascuna di queste immagini potenti.

Cwynar afferma che il suo maggiore interesse “è il modo in cui le immagini con il tempo si trasformano, si accumulano, perdurano, e cambiano di significato e valore, è l’effetto che si produce su una visione collettiva del mondo (…) Mi concentro sulle immagini della storia recente, indagando l’idealismo modernista della

seconda metà del XX secolo, così come è stato rappresentato su riviste e annunci pubblicitari, nelle fotografie personali di ciascuno di noi e di archivio”2. In Colour Factory, l’artista estende l’analisi del significato oltre l’immagine e la sua circolazione, fino a includere nella riflessione i mezzi di produzione dei prodotti di bellezza.

Com’è possibile, ad esempio, che la nostra esperienza emotiva, intima della bellezza possa essere così efficacemente riprodotta in serie, in uno stick per labbra rosso fiamma?

A dar vita a questa esperienza alchemica è in parte quella tradizione di immagini di donne col rossetto rosso che da sempre spopolano nei film e sulle riviste di moda. In un suo saggio, Lauren Berlant ha proposto un termine preciso per definire questa rete intima, sentimentale di presupposti culturali che veicolano a un tempo esperienze e beni di consumo. Secondo la studiosa questo movimento tra beni e significato conduce a sperimentare una sorta di “intimo pubblico”. Quasi una contraddizione in termini, se consideriamo che l’idea di pubblico non viene spesso associata a quello di intimità. Ciononostante il termine è utile per descrivere una sfera condivisa stabilita, all’interno della quale esista un senso collettivo di un certo significato culturale. Il concetto di “intimo pubblico” si viene a determinare in quanto “ci si aspetta che consumatori di specifici oggetti condividano già una visione del mondo e una conoscenza emotiva che deriva loro da un’esperienza storica comune”. Berlant continua dicendo che lo spazio connotato come “intimo pubblico” si viene a creare quando “i consumatori che vi partecipano sono percepiti come contraddistinti da una storia vissuta in comune; le narrazioni e gli oggetti sono considerati espressioni di questa storia, e in parallelo prendono forma anche le convenzioni di appartenenza ad essa; inoltre, insieme all’esperienza eccitante e incarnata di stare al mondo in un certo modo, vi è anche la promessa di offrire una migliore esperienza di appartenenza sociale – da un lato attraverso la partecipazione all’imperante cultura di mercato, e dall’altro perché viene rivelato alle persone come possono vivere”3. Forse non conoscerò mai l’esatta tonalità di rosso del mio rossetto, ma su una cosa possiamo convenire, è del tutto simile al rosso

sfoggiato da Marilyn Monroe e Sophia Loren, Taylor Swift e Monica Bellucci. Non è questo un dato sufficiente?

La natura scivolosa di questa trama culturale globale è parte integrante della critica di Cwynar, lucidamente spiegata nel video Colour Factory con la sua narrazione per collage. Sovrapposizioni di citazioni e parafrasi, in parallelo con le sue personali ammissioni e i suoi interrogativi, confermano la veridicità delle ingrate tradizioni della bellezza nei confronti delle donne e dei loro sforzi per migliorare o manipolare il proprio aspetto, secondo aspettative culturali in continua evoluzione. Avere successo significa essere guardati, farsi conoscere da un pubblico. In che modo però l’autentico sé si adatta al tentativo di creare e proiettare una propria immagine? Chi controlla la rete di soggettività condivise di cui facciamo parte? Noi creiamo non soltanto cose che siano utili, ma anche cose che esprimano una verità percepita, o un ricordo; indirizziamo la percezione attraverso l’uso attento dei colori e delle loro allusioni. Quando si inizia a risalire alla catena dei significati, indietro fino alle sue fonti materiali, non ci si può fermare. Bisogna anche analizzare quelle stesse fonti materiali. In Colour Factory, Sara Cwynar ha spalancato un seduttivo vaso di Pandora, cogliendo abilmente il piacere ambivalente del creatore (e del consumatore) di immagini contemporaneo, sulla scia della cultura del presente. Siamo critici e tuttavia sensibili al canto delle sirene delle immagini, ai colori particolari, alle forme particolari, familiari, pubbliche.

— Toward the end of Sara Cwynar’s short film, Colour Factory, one of the narrators intones this existential statement: “I will never know how you see red and you will never know how I see it.”

This declaration follows a bevy of mass-produced reifications of red as they march across the screen—boots in wonder-woman red, candied-ap-

ple red nail polish, dried blood red lipstick in the process of being made. Each deftly punctuates Cwynar’s stream-of-consciousness meditation on the relationship of colour to our conceptions of beauty and artifice. How does the manufacture of colour relate to our private experience of colour?

How does the standardisation of colour inform its capacity for creating illusion and for evoking metaphor and emotion? A rose by any other name might smell as sweet, but a red rose versus a white rose will mean something quite different to many viewers.

The industrial production of colour is inherently about the subjective made tangible and replicable. From the desire to portray people and products “accurately” in paintings and colour photography to the drive to conjure up and capitalise on the latest colour trends in makeup, clothes, and other goods, entire industries have been spun out of the effort to stabilise the fabrication of colour. This is true in sectors related to imaging and optics, but things get especially complicated in the gendered realms of fashion, beauty, and cosmetic goods. The standardisation of colour continues to evolve based on changing assumptions and the sociological biases of the time and place of its manufacture.

Who is worthy of being depicted and how? What constitutes female beauty and who controls it?

These big questions are writ large in the tiniest or seemingly inconsequential of objects.

In the film and the photographic works of Colour Factory, Cwynar uses a series of artifacts to dissect the deeply ingrained systems that unconsciously guide our behaviors as consumers of images and goods. Two images of Cwynar’s muse, Tracy, call to mind research undertaken by manufacturers of colour film on how to reliably depict the “proper” colour values of skin tones. The oversized colour grid on which Tracy is posed—rendered with extra intensity and saturation—subtly burlesques the effort to evaluate “correct” skin tones. The exaggerated nature of the images also resonates with the findings of the 1960 landmark study “Memory Colours of Familiar Objects” by Kodak researcher C. J. Bartelson, in which viewer’s memories of commonly occurring colours were found to overemphasise their primary chromatic charac-

27 teristics.1 Grass is remembered as more intensely green; the sky more decidedly blue; Caucasian skin as rosier in hue. Tracy, posing in front of shifting grids of colour, transcends and sinks into simultaneous memories of Tracy as individual; Tracy as colour model; Tracy as representative of Asian or “other” skin tones; Tracy as a predictor of consumer possibilities.

In a different riff on the product shot, Cwynar photographs reproductions of a lipstick case and an aerosol cosmetic can. Each has been cast in bronze and photographed against reproductions of a sky in two noticeably different shades of blue. They are disposable objects rendered in-disposable—artifacts from prior commercial, industrial eras. The shifting blue backdrops further underscore the instability of colour reproduction and of memory. Similarly, in the reworking of images from a cosmetic catalogue (Forty Fabulous Shades to Make Women’s Hands More Beautiful!) Cwynar dissolves a series of product shots into composites inlaid with smaller, self-referential images of women’s hands busily working at being more beautiful. These images are different from—but not unrelated to Cwynar’s lingering gaze upon the utilitarian, modernist aesthetics of traditional manufacturing. Stolidly built in industrial blue and construction-zone orange, nostalgia-inducing minty green and greys; the machines evoke a particular vintage of work and working—of traditionally male enterprises. The palettes, lines, and classic forms of labour and industrial capitalism are embedded and legible in these forms, even beneath a coat of dust. The thick layers of meaning that surround the act of “making” and being “made-up” are effectively teased out and brought to the surface in each of these graphically effusive images.

Cwynar states that her specific interest lies in “the way images morph, accumulate, endure, and change in meaning and value over time, and in the effect this has on a collective worldview … I focus on images from recent history, questioning the mid-to-late-twentieth-century modernist idealism visualised in magazine and advertisements, and in personal and stock photographs.”2 In Colour Factory, she expands her examination of the accumulation of meaning beyond the image and its

circulation to include the means of manufacture of beauty products. How is it, for example, that our private, emotional experience of beauty can be so effectively mass produced as a tube of fire-engine red lipstick?

Informing this alchemical experience, in part, is a lineage of images of women in red lipstick from film and fashion. The scholar Lauren Berlant has proposed a term for this affective network of cultural assumptions that infuse experiences and consumer goods alike. She postulates that this traffic between goods and meaning leads to the experience of an “intimate public.” This may seem to be a contradiction in terms—the idea of public isn’t often associated with intimacy. But it is useful in describing a prescribed shared sphere in which exists a common sense of cultural significance. The “intimate public” is created via “an expectation that the consumers of its particular stuff already share a worldview and emotional knowledge that they have derived from a broadly common historical experience.” Berlant explains that an intimate public’s “consumer participants are perceived to be marked by a commonly lived history; its narratives and things are deemed expressive of that history while also shaping its conventions of belonging; and, expressing the sensational, embodied experience of living as a certain kind of being in the world, it promises also to provide a better experience of social belonging—partly through participation in the relevant commodity culture, and partly because of its revelations about how people can live.”3 I may never know the precise nature of the shade or red you see in my lipstick, but we can at least agree that it is similar to the red worn by Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren; Taylor Swift and Monica Bellucci. Isn’t that enough?

The slippery nature of this act of cultural web-weaving is an inherent part of Cwynar’s critique, most clearly elucidated in her collaged narration to the Colour Factory film. Overlapping quotations and paraphrases, along with her own admissions and inquiries, acknowledge the hostile traditions of beauty in relation to women and their efforts to enhance or manipulate their appearance according to ever-shifting cultural expectations.

Success means to be looked at -- to make oneself known to a public, but how does the authentic self

fit into the effort to create and project an image of self? Who controls the network of shared subjectivities that we participate in? We make things, not only to be useful, but also to express a perceived truth or a memory; we direct perception by the careful use of colour and references.

Once you start tracing the chain of signifiers back to its material sources, it’s not enough stop there. You must also unpack the material sources themselves. In Colour Factory, Cwynar has opened up a seductive Pandora’s box, astutely capturing the ambivalent pleasures of the contemporary image maker (and image consumer) swimming within the slipstream of contemporary culture.

We critique and yet are nonetheless susceptible to the siren song of images; of particular colours; of particular, familiar, and public forms.

MARI BASTASHEVSKI EMERGENCY MANAGERS MARTA DAHÓ

— La pratica artistica sviluppata da Mari Bastashevski negli ultimi dieci anni presenta, tra le principali linee di riflessione, una questione non necessariamente nuova ma certamente sempre più pressante nella sua versione contemporanea: gli affari nella politica di stato, nel loro aspetto più disfunzionale. Attraverso progetti diversi, caratterizzati da ricerche sempre più lunghe e complesse, il lavoro di Bastashevski si è incentrato sull’individuazione dei meccanismi di funzionamento della macchina governativa quando questa opera danneggiando direttamente una parte importante della società civile, in particolare quella più vulnerabile. È questo il caso di State Business, il progetto a cui l’artista lavora dal 2011 e che costituisce una delle sue ricerche più difficili e ostinate.

L’esacerbazione degli effetti più nocivi delle politiche neoliberiste ha fatto sì che, in campo artistico, si sviluppasse un’attenzione nuova nei confronti dell’ambivalenza morale con cui i

responsabili di queste politiche agiscono, amministrando nel segno della diseguaglianza i flussi di capitale e manipolando l’informazione a proprio vantaggio. Se l’opacità dell'operato più oscuro che è alla base del capitalismo globale è inversamente proporzionale alla visibilità delle sue conseguenze (ampiamente fotografate), allora Bastashevski appartiene a quel gruppo di artisti impegnati nell’invertire tale polarità.

Questa attenzione al disastro premeditato non equivale, quindi, al fissare lo sguardo sulla rovina finale e sui soggetti coinvolti, ma serve piuttosto ad aprire nuovi spazi di comprensione dello stretto intreccio fra interessi privati e la trama dei poteri dello stato. Più precisamente, come in State Business, si intende identificare gli ingranaggi specifici che sostengono le economie concepite per lucrare sulla crisi sociale e addirittura per indurla e perpetuarla, in stretta connivenza con l’industria mediatica. State Business, però, risponde non tanto all’interesse di rivelare segreti di Stato e verità celate “dietro al sipario” quanto piuttosto, come dichiara l’autrice, all’urgente necessità di determinare dove tale sipario sia stato collocato, per delineare così il perimetro di un potere che difende le leggi non scritte della tecnocrazia.

Per dar conto della natura diffusa di questo fenomeno e rispondere alla complessità dei rapporti tra tutte le parti coinvolte (attori locali, politici a livello statale, avvocati e rappresentanti di società multinazionali, tanto per citarne alcune), State Business si sviluppa in diversi capitoli. Il suo carattere saggistico, tuttavia, non cade nell’astrazione, tutt’altro: i casi di studio che costituiscono questo progetto sono esempi che nascono da congiunture specifiche.

Nel capitolo trattato in questa pubblicazione, Emergency Managers, Bastashevski analizza la crisi idrica verificatasi a Flint (Michigan) nel 2014, che causò un avvelenamento massiccio della popolazione, soprattutto afroamericana.

Come negli altri casi di studio, la ricerca è stata condotta con estrema tenacia, fino a che si è riusciti a definire aspetti in precedenza del tutto indecifrabili: gli elementi chiave che permettono di individuare le cause della crisi, il modo in cui questa è stata gestita, senza dimenticare un fattore cruciale, vale a dire chi ne ha tratto e

57 continuerà a trarne vantaggio.

In questo contesto di lavoro, la questione della “rappresentazione” pone diverse problematiche, con cui Bastashevski si confronta in modo consapevole. Pur essendo evidente che la catastrofe di Flint è riconducibile a tanti altri casi simili e che il risultato di questo lavoro sta esattamente nell’offrire una rappresentazione di come funzionano i for-profit-crisis-regimes (regimi di crisi a scopo di lucro), bisogna notare che il modo in cui l’artista riflette sulle implicazioni di ciò che è “visivamente rappresentativo” è particolarmente profondo e può costituire un autentico sottotema del progetto. In questo senso si possono indicare due aspetti significativi. Da un lato, l’attenzione al ruolo svolto dalle immagini nella mediatizzazione delle crisi di questo genere. Dall’altro, la stessa pratica fotografica dell’autrice, che le consente di mostrare in quale misura le sia stato permesso di accedere al soggetto da fotografare.

La trattativa sulle distanze da cui scattare le foto è parte fondamentale del progetto, perché indica la posizione concessa e conquistata per l’accesso al valore dell’informazione, accesso precedentemente negato e impedito alla popolazione civile.

Parallelamente, il tema della rappresentazione viene affrontato anche a partire dall’aspetto espositivo. Se facciamo attenzione alla dialettica tra immagini, testi e documenti, nonché alla distribuzione del peso retorico tra di essi, risulta evidente come l'esposizione dei diversi materiali evidenzi tensioni, presenze e assenze con un chiaro proposito: far sì che il vuoto informativo che circonda situazioni di questo tipo possa essere riconosciuto e ripensato a partire dalla realtà concreta.

Come Bastashevski sostiene, molti dei documenti e delle informazioni che è riuscita a trovare hanno, di per sé, scarso valore; è il loro preciso collegamento con altre fonti a far scaturire un vero spazio di conoscenza critica per la società civile. Tuttavia, il legame che si stabilisce tra fotografie e materiale testuale non è strettamente causale o esplicativo. Al contrario, le immagini manifestano una sorta di resistenza a fungere da elementi di persuasione di una rappresentazione semplificata, come accade con quelle che la sfera mediatica si incarica tanto spesso di neutralizzare.

In questo progetto si deve inoltre segnalare un’altra resistenza che riflette la posizione della sua autrice: la riluttanza a dare visibilità a chi dal conflitto è stato maggiormente danneggiato. In questo caso si tratta delle persone che sono state avvelenate dall’acqua e che hanno perso le loro case, pignorate perché non potevano far fronte all’aumento sproporzionato delle bollette. Mari Bastashevski preferisce un itinerario narrativo diverso. Non solo interviene a deviare la tradizionale tendenza dell’estetica documentale verso un’altra direzione critica che include i responsabili, ma si propone anche di identificare le fasi di sviluppo di questa necropolitica1. “Le vittime”, sostiene l’autrice, “sono troppo spesso trasformate artificialmente in un altro da sé posto in uno stato di permanenza, uno stato che la fotografia ha contribuito a consolidare e a cui continua troppo spesso a contribuire.”2 Il tema affrontato da Emergency Managers e la modalità con cui il progetto è stato realizzato dal punto di vista formale non dovrebbero farci dimenticare la proposta di fondo di questo lavoro.

In questo caso, un’esperienza di riflessione rivolta sia alle specifiche situazioni studiate sia alla nostra stessa forma di percezione e comprensione delle crisi come quelle affrontate in State Business. Fino a che punto ci è permesso avvicinarci al problema di questa sovranità oscura?

Quanto possiamo diventare sensibili e reattivi nei confronti dei perimetri che proteggono una tecnocrazia tanto spietata? Questi sono gli spazi di lotta e apertura in cui Mari Bastashevski, già da diversi anni, lavora senza tregua.

— One of the main strands of reflection within Mari Bastashevski’s decade-long artistic practice poses a question that, though not necessarily new, is increasingly pressing in its latest iteration: the state market expressed at its most dysfunctional. Through a number of projects characterised by increasingly complex

and prolonged research, her work has focused on identifying the operating mechanisms of the government machinery when they directly effect harm and abuse upon civil society, especially upon its most vulnerable members. State Business, which Bastashevski has been working on since 2011 is perhaps the most daring and tenacious.

The intensification of the most corrosive effects of neoliberal policies has prompted the art world to pay renewed attention to the moral ambivalence with which the agents of those policies operate in the unequal administration of capital flows and information value. If the opacity of global capitalism’s darkest agency is inversely proportional to the discernibility of its (amply photographed) consequences, then Mari Bastashevski belongs to that group of artists committed to reversing that polarity.

This focus on premeditated disaster aims not to perpetuate our gaze upon social devastation and its inhabitants, but to pull open spaces for understanding between the dense warp and weft of state powers and private interests. More concretely, as State Business raises, the goal is to identify the specific gears that sustain—and even spark and extend—crises and conflict economies, in close collusion with the media industry. That said, State Business does not attempt to reveal state secrets and truth hidden “behind the curtain,” so to speak, so much as to find out—as Mari Bastashevski states—where that veil is located; to establish the perimeter of power that shelters the non-written laws of technocracy.

Seeking to address this phenomenon’s diffuse nature and answer the complex relationships between every complicit party (local managers, state politicians, lawyers and corporate representatives, to name just a few), State Business is organised into several chapters. However, its essayistic format does not fall into abstraction; quite the opposite: the case studies around which this project is structured emerged from very specific circumstances.

In the chapter included in this publication, Emergency Managers, Bastashevski turns to the 2014 water crisis in Flint (Michigan) which led to massive levels of lead poisoning among the

city’s mostly African American population. As in other case studies, Bastashevski researched relentlessly until she identified something that at the outset had seemed entirely inaccessible: a glimpse into how the crisis was bred, born and managed, without forgetting, crucially, who profited and who continues to profit.

In this framework, the question of “representation” entails a complex issue that Bastashevski addresses conscientiously. Though the case of Flint is comparable to many others and the achievement of this particular research project consists precisely in offering a representation of how for-profit crisis regimes operate, it is also worth noting that the means by which Bastashevski reflects on the implications of the “visually representative” are especially fertile and may constitute a sort of subtheme of the project. In this sense, there are two main aspects to consider: first, her close attention to the role that images play in the mediatisation of the crisis, and second, the photographer’s own photographic practice, through which she is able to highlight the extent to which she is or is not permitted access to the photographed subject. Negotiating the distances from which to photograph is a key part of the project, as it indicates the struggle between the permitted and the achieved position from which the photographer has access to information value that, earlier, was denied or obstructed to the civil population.

In parallel, the problem of how to handle this theme of photographic representation is also taken in thoughtful directions, in terms of exhibition. A close consideration of the dialectic between images, texts and documents, as well as the distribution of these items’ respective rhetorical weight, attests to the depth to which she addresses the various branches of her central theme. The display of the various materials puts a number of tensions, presences and absences into play, all with a clear purpose: to recognize and rethink, from the reality of the concrete, the information vacuum surrounding this specific variety of circumstances.

As Bastashevski asserts, many of these documents have little value in and of themselves; it is in their assemblage, their precise

connection, that they create a true space of critical knowledge for civil society. In this sense, in relation to the documents and texts, the photographs do not link in a strictly causal or illustrative way. To the contrary, they show a kind of resistance to functioning as the persuasion pieces of a simplified representation, such as those which are handled by the media sphere and are more easily neutralised.

It is worth pointing out that this project contains another resistance, which is also a statement: an unwillingness to disseminate images of a crisis’s most deeply injured parties—in this case, those who suffered from lead poisoning and had their homes foreclosed when they were unable to keep up with disproportionately climbing water taxes. Bastashevski prefers a different narrative path. Not only does she rechannel the tendency of the traditional documentary aesthetic of victim representation with the inclusion of those who are responsible, she also attempts to identify the phases through which this necropolitics1 is developed. “Victims” she asserts, “are too often an artificially created other that is placed in a state of permanence, a state cementing to which photography has contributed and to which it continues to contribute all too often2.

The issues that Emergency Managers addresses and the modality in which the project is formally executed should not distract us from Bastashevski’s broader overture, which in this case is an experience of reflection that points to the specific circumstances researched as well as to our own way of perceiving and understanding the crises discussed in the broader project, State Business. How close to the problem of this dark sovereignty are we allowed to see? How sensitive and responsive can we become to the perimeters that safeguard so wicked a technocracy? These are the spaces of struggle and opening in which Mari Bastashevski has been operating for years.

MANAGER DELL'EMERGENZA Se mai è stato un evento l’avvelenamento da piombo dei cittadini di Flint, per la maggior parte afroamericani, si è trattato di un evento senza luogo né data.

Il problema non è maturato all’interno dei confini della città di Flint. Piuttosto si è sviluppato per gradi, nelle maglie di una rete dove si intrecciavano situazioni locali e business nazionale, in Michigan e a Washington, gruppi di esperti e funzionari governativi, e una multinazionale miliardaria con sede in Francia. Ha preso forma nel corso degli anni, in una successione di piccoli passi, tutti nella direzione dell’avvelenamento di massa, ma sempre presentati in una luce positiva, con la promessa di crescita, riqualificazione e miglioramenti economici per una città i cui abitanti si vedevano esclusi da queste possibilità, sulla base di differenze di classe inquadrate nella categoria comune dell’inadeguatezza produttiva, e applicando all’esclusione socioeconomica il principio del politicamente corretto, in linea con gli standard correnti di democrazia manageriale.

Se mai la crisi idrica del Michigan è da considerarsi un evento, allora si tratta di un evento senza punto culminante e senza un limite temporale per porre fine alla vicenda, almeno per quanto riguarda gli attori che quell’evento hanno determinato.

Al momento le uniche soluzioni implementate per risolvere la crisi sono quelle proposte all’interno della rete che collega i medesimi attori, con le loro invariate categorie di conoscenza e potere, e di esclusione classista, in un processo coerente e senza soluzione di continuità.

I commissari straordinari e gli amministratori sono invitati a usare Flint come un trampolino per saltare da un’amministrazione fiduciaria a un’altra, in altri stati, lucrando somme sicure come servitori del bene pubblico pronti per l’uso, specializzati in città economicamente depresse pronte a pagare la parcella delle loro consulenze. Per cominciare, è toccato a Flint, colonizzata come zona di conflitto a bassa intensità, all’interno della quale continua a imperversare un bombardamento di interventi inesorabili su infrastrutture problematiche, oltre a

una deliberata cecità che ignora le problematiche razziste di un sistema fondato sull’esclusione.

Mentre innumerevoli nessi di causalità tra razzismo strutturale e sistemico e il protrarsi strumentale di questa crisi sono stati svelati, e più volte efficacemente contestati dal punto di vista giuridico, in dibattiti pubblici, da avvocati e intellettuali attivi all’interno della comunità di Flint, i mass media e le tv in prima fila continuano a narrare la storia di Flint come un problema di infrastrutture risolvibile con interventi di esperti e iniezioni di denaro, all’interno dello stesso quadro normativo impiegato dai soliti noti che si offrono come rimedio in perpetuo. Sempre più i riferimenti alla crisi di Flint, nel carosello delle notizie nazionali, sono inquadrati nel modello di un evento mediatico fotografabile che riveste significato per i funzionari di stato e per chi fa affari con la crisi, ma sempre meno per i cittadini di Flint. La stretta e salda relazione tra i titolari di commesse pubbliche e i politici locali è considerata talmente normale che neanche l’interesse di quei media critici sulla vicenda riesce ad attrarre l’attenzione del pubblico, se non di rado, e tanto meno a portare a conseguenze legali.

Spaziando attraverso i confini geografici e ideologici, Business di stato è una ricerca di controinformazione giuridica che indaga la relazione tra funzionari statali e aziende che alimentano e sostengono le crisi nello status quo, dove la violenza assurge ad abituale norma di comportamento. La ricerca si propone di individuare i luoghi dove maturano le decisioni, dove gli affari legati ai conflitti internazionali sono routine quotidiana, e mira a investigare come la cultura dominante della non trasparenza e la sua rappresentazione nei media sia da sempre al servizio dell’industria.

EMERGENCY MANAGERS If lead poisoning of the predominantly African American citizens of Flint was an event, it was an event without a date and location. The crisis did not braise in Flint itself. Rather it built up within an internal network of local state and national businesses, in Michigan and Washington, D.C. think tanks or government offices, and at a multibillion dollar corporate estate in France. Over the years, in a succession of small steps, each leading towards the mass poisoning and each made reasonable with a promise of expertise, growth, and improvement for a city of people that were excluded from this network on the grounds of class differences framed under the catch-all umbrella of insufficient expertise, rendering the exclusion politically correct, in line with the current standards of managerial democracy.

If the Michigan water crisis is an event, it is an event without a climax or deadline, at least for the actors directly instrumental to its eruption. The only solutions implemented to resolve the crisis to date are those proposed within the same network of actors, using the same notions of knowledge and power, and class exclusion, in a segued, uninterrupted process.

The emergency managers and officials have progress to use Flint as a springboard from one trusteeship to another in different states and secure lucrative solutions as insta-retainers for depressed towns that will pay for their consulting fees. Flint itself has since transformed into a camp akin to low-intensity conflict zone within which an onslaught of unrelenting solutions to infrastructure problems continue to flow on par with deliberate cognitive blindness towards the issue of racism and systemic exclusion.

While countless links of causality between structural and systemic racism and a seemingly unending perpetuation of this crisis have been unveiled by lawyers and academics operating within the Flint community, some of which have been successfully argued in legal forums, mass media broadcasters continue to narrate Flint as a problem of infrastructure that can be resolved with experts

and injections of cash, using the same normative sets of definitions employed by those offering perpetual remediation.

Increasingly mentions of the Flint crisis in the national news cycle are usually paired with a photographable media-event that carries much more significance for the state officials and businesses with contractual interest in the crisis than the citizens of Flint themselves. The tight knitted relationship between the contractors and local politicians is so readily accepted as normal that even the critical media coverage rarely draws much attention, let alone lead to legal ramifications.

STATE BUSINESS Emergency Managers is one of the chapters from State Business.

Stretching beyond geographical and ideological borders, State Business is a counter-forensic research about the relationship between state officials and companies that fuel and sustain the crises in status quo and makes violence a norm.

It locates the spaces of decision-making where international conflict commerce is a daily routine, and investigates if the established culture of obfuscation and relationship in which it’s represented in the media indefinitely sustains the industry.

— Chi osservi per la prima volta le opere di Sohei Nishino rimarrà impressionato dalla loro imponenza. Le sue fotografie hanno uno sguardo panoramico sul mondo, ma sono capaci anche di concentrare i ricordi e il tempo.

Eppure, al di là dello stupore, proprio l’estrema minuziosità e l’audacia di queste opere potrebbero suscitare una sorta di scetticismo negli osservatori, soprattutto negli esperti di fotografia e di arte contemporanea, spingendoli a considerarle espressioni di un decorativismo semplicistico e stravagante e quindi non degne d’apprezzamento, come se fossero dei collage di vedute fotografiche urbane, o ancora peggio, elaborazioni digitali di fotografie aeree che cercano di suscitare effetti analoghi a quelli dei lavori di David Hockney.

Io desidero invece sottolineare l’autenticità della prima impressione, lo stupore spontaneo che si prova davanti alle foto di Nishino. Vorrei dimostrare che le sue opere sono totalmente

estranee a qualsivoglia affettazione, e che, attraverso i suoi scatti, l’autore ha sempre, ostinatamente, posto domande inevitabili per tutti noi, domande che però non hanno risposta: Che cos’è il lavoro? Che cosa significa vivere? Che tipo di esistenza è quella che l’uomo conduce? In che cosa consiste il mondo? Può darsi che l’audacia di queste domande dipenda dalla giovane età del fotografo. Tuttavia, desidero farvi comprendere quanto l’atto del fotografare sia per Nishino complesso e difficile, perché comporta necessariamente una costante apertura di sé verso l’Altro.

Come tema di questo progetto, Nishino ha scelto l’acqua. È superfluo dire che l’esistenza dell’uomo è inscindibile dall’acqua. Nei tempi antichi, gli insediamenti umani si concentravano intorno ai fiumi, mentre i popoli nomadi si spostavano in cerca di acqua. Per secoli l’uomo ha pescato, irrigato, costruito barche, sviluppato l’industria, scavato canali. Dall’antichità fino ai giorni nostri l’acqua è stata per l’uomo anche una fonte di guai.

Non abbiamo dimenticato i danni provocati dai recenti terremoti, acquazzoni e uragani; nelle varie mitologie sono numerose le storie sulla fine delle civiltà antiche causata dalle inondazioni. Tuttavia Nishino non ha scelto il soggetto dell’acqua sulla base di conoscenze acquisite dai libri. Negli ultimi quattordici anni, egli ha continuato a muoversi camminando per il globo: Tokyo, Osaka, San Francisco, L’Avana, Amsterdam, Nuova Delhi, Gerusalemme, Berna, Berlino, Rio De Janeiro, Istanbul, Londra, Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York, Parigi, Johannesburg, Hiroshima e altri luoghi ancora. Attraverso le sue percezioni e osservazioni, questo costruttore di “mappe dioramiche” che gira incessantemente da una città all’altra ha individuato nell’elemento acqua il fulcro del mondo.

La destinazione scelta questa volta da Nishino è il fiume Po. Il fiume più lungo d’Italia, che supera i 650 chilometri di lunghezza, nasce sulle Alpi e attraversa l’Italia settentrionale per sfociare nel mare Adriatico. La Pianura Padana, che circonda il suo percorso, si estende su ben quattro regioni del nord Italia: Piemonte, Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna e Veneto. Grazie all’abbondanza idrica, alla fertilità dei terreni e all’ottima rete dei trasporti, il territorio ha prosperato come regione dedita alla produzione di grano e ha trainato l’industria del paese. Questa vasta area vanta anche una

85 storia originale e gloriosa, non solo economica ma anche politica e culturale.

Il punto di partenza per Nishino è stato il Monviso, la vetta più alta delle Alpi Cozie, sul confine tra Francia e Italia. Da lì è sceso in città, Torino, e ha viaggiato per 45 giorni sempre in direzione dell’Adriatico. Sul lungofiume ha incontrato gente e paesaggi molto vari: persone che vivono in barca, pescatori professionisti e dilettanti, un anziano ottantenne che in dieci anni ha costruito un enorme edificio abusivo su tronchi galleggianti, bambini che si divertono in strutture trasformate in spazi di gioco, una coppia che gestisce una risaia a conduzione familiare, una signora che gli ha fatto visitare una ex fabbrica di zucchero, boscaioli ecc. Nishino ha scelto di confondersi tra le persone per prestare orecchio alle loro voci e scattar loro delle fotografie. I racconti della gente sono semplici, schietti e concreti: i pesci siluro, che attirano la curiosità dei visitatori, si sono moltiplicati in maniera esponenziale, divorando i pesci più piccoli e distruggendo l’ecosistema del fiume; il Po dà la possibilità di divertirsi pescando, ma a causa dell’inquinamento i pesci non sono più commestibili; le rive sono piene di immondizia e siringhe, e frequentate da giovani fumatori di marijuana; una donna dedica la sua vita alla pulizia dell’ambiente del lungofiume; gli alberi di pioppo che crescono sulle rive perdono i loro fiori simili a neve, mentre il legname viene trasformato in prodotti destinati al consumo nazionale ed estero; i bambini preferiscono nuotare in piscina piuttosto che tuffarsi nel fiume. E poi vi sono le vicende dei piccoli contadini, sempre più in difficoltà a causa dello strapotere delle grandi aziende agricole, dell’enorme zuccherificio che è stato dislocato al Sud per ridurre i costi gestionali e di cui sono rimasti solo i ruderi, e le storie di prosperità e decadenza dei proprietari delle barche a noleggio. Insieme a una grande quantità di pellicole, dal viaggio lungo il fiume Nishino riporta a casa il proprio corpo che ha immagazzinato ogni sorta di ricordi e di tracce del tempo, i paesaggi e gli scorci delle terre visitate, l’atmosfera e le conversazioni con le persone incontrate, gli odori, la gioia e la paura, il freddo e il caldo, nonché la ricchezza di questi luoghi. È proprio da qui, da queste esperienze che si origina il suo successivo atto fotografico.

Anzitutto sviluppa manualmente alcune centinaia di rullini e li fissa su provini a contatto. Si tratta di un’operazione solitaria, sobria, semplice ma lunga, da svolgere in camera oscura. Poi con molta cura taglia e smonta uno per uno i provini sviluppati. “È un lavoro infinito, attraverso il quale riesco a rievocare i luoghi dove sono stato.”1 In seguito incolla ciascun pezzo su una tela gigantesca. Ci vogliono molti giorni, a volte mesi. Tutti i provini vengono utilizzati, nulla viene scartato. Egli ripete questa semplice operazione con estrema pazienza, tenendo sempre a mente l’immagine panoramica complessiva dell’opera finale. È un procedimento di ricostruzione del viaggio in cui il fotografo imprime, con le mani e il corpo, tutte le sue energie.

Dall’espressione del volto, dalle rughe profonde e dagli sguardi quieti, dai paesaggi o dall’occhio di un pesce egli fa emergere un frammento della vita delle persone incontrate per strada. I ricordi personali di Nishino, la memoria del luogo e la vita delle persone messi insieme brillano sullo sfondo della storia e della società, sono raccolti e inseriti in un paesaggio e in un tempo goffamente deformato, per poi risorgere nell’immagine panoramica integrale. Nella creazione artistica di Nishino, la casualità degli incontri si trasforma man mano in una necessità. È consigliabile osservare con attenzione il lavoro di Nishino, dapprima nella sua interezza, poi nei suoi dettagli.

Il Po, descritto da Nishino in quest’opera a metà strada tra mappa e diorama, serpeggia come se fosse vivo. Sembra quasi un dragone, animale mitologico che corre nel tempo e sale nel cielo per proteggere l’uomo.

And yet, beyond the wonder, these works can elicit, with their minuteness and boldness, a kind of skepticism in viewers, especially experts in photography and contemporary art, pushing them

to see the work as the expression of a simplistic and extravagant decorativism and therefore not worthy of appreciation, as if they were collages of photographic city views or, even worse, digital elaborations of aerial photographs that try to elicit effects like those of the work of David Hockney.

I want to instead emphasise the authenticity of the first impression, the spontaneous feeling of wonder that one experiences before the photos of Nishino. I would like to show that his works are entirely extraneous to all affectation, and that the artist has, through his shots, always stubbornly asked questions inevitable for all of us, questions that have, however, no answers: What is work?

What does it mean to live? What kind of existence is human existence? What does the world consist in? The boldness of these questions might be down to the photographer’s youth. However, I would like to show you how complex and difficult the activity of photographing is for Nishino, necessarily involving as it does the constant openness of the self to the Other.

Nishino chose water as his theme for this project. It would be superfluous to say that human existence cannot be separated from water. In antiquity, settlements concentrated around rivers, while nomadic populations moved around in search of water. For centuries, humans fished, irrigated, built boats, developed industry and dug canals. From antiquity to the present, water has also been a source of trouble for men and women. We have not forgotten the damage caused by the recent earthquakes, downpours and hurricanes. And there are numerous myths across cultures about the end of civilisation due to floods. However, Nishino did not choose the subject of water on the basis of book-knowledge. Over the last fourteen years, he has kept moving, walking all over the globe: Tokyo, Osaka, San Francisco, Havana, Amsterdam, New Delhi, Jerusalem, Bern, Berlin, Rio De Janeiro, Istanbul, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York, Paris, Johannesburg, Hiroshima and on and on. Through his perceptions and observations, this builder of “diorama maps,” who travels endlessly from one city to the next, identified water as the fulcrum of the world.

This time Nishino chose the River Po as his destination. The longest river in Italy, more

than 650 kilometres long, it starts in the Alps and crosses over northern Italy, ending at the Adriatic Sea. It is enclosed by the Po Valley, Pianura Padana, which extends across four regions of northern Italy: Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and the Veneto. Thanks to the abundance of water, the fertility of the soil and an excellent transport network, the area of the Po prospered as a region devoted to grain production and drove the country’s industry. This vast area also boasts a unique and glorious past, which goes beyond the economic sphere to also embrace culture and politics.

Nishino’s starting point was Monviso, the highest peak of the Cottian Alps, on the border between France and Italy. From there, he went down to the city, Turin, and travelled for forty-five days, always in the direction of the Adriatic Sea. He encountered a wide range of people and landscapes along the river: people who live in boats, professional and amateur fishermen, an eighty-year-old man who spent ten years building an enormous unauthorised building on floating trunks, children playing in structures transformed into play areas, a couple who run a family-owned rice field, a woman who got him a tour of a former sugar factory, woodcutters and more. Nishino wanted to mix with the people he met to hear their stories and take their photographs. Their stories are simple, frank and pragmatic: the uncontrolled proliferation of sheatfish, which attract visitors’ attention, is destroying the river’s ecosystem because they devour the small fish; you can fish on the Po for fun, but you can’t eat what you catch because of the pollution; the riverbanks are full of rubbish and syringes and teeming with young marijuana smokers; one woman dedicates her life to cleaning up the riverbanks; the poplars growing on the river’s banks scatter the area with their snow-like flowers, while their wood is transformed into products for both domestic and foreign markets; children prefer swimming pools to jumping into the river. And then there are the stories of the small farmers, whose situation is steadily worsening due to the outsized power of big farms; the enormous sugar factory that was moved to the south to lower management costs, only the ruins of which remain; the wealth and

decadence of rental boat owners. Along with a massive quantity of film, Nishino brought his own body back home, having stored away all kinds of memories and traces of time, landscapes and views of places seen, the atmosphere and conversations with the people he met, the smells, the joy and the fear, the heat and the cold, as well as the richness of these places. And this, these experiences, are exactly where the next phase of his photographic projects begins.

First, he manually develops several hundred photographs and prints them on contact sheets.

This is quiet, solitary, simple but time-consuming work, carried out in the darkroom. Then, with great care, he cuts out and separates the developed proofs one by one. “It is a very time-consuming process, through which I can re-evoke the places I have been.”1 Next, he glues each piece to a gigantic canvas.

It takes weeks, sometimes even months. He uses all of the proofs; none are wasted. And he repeats this simple process with incredible patience, always keeping the overall image of the completed work-to-be in his head. Using his hands and body, the photographer imprints this process for the reconstruction of his travels with all of his energies.

From a facial expression, deep wrinkles or a tranquil gaze, from the landscape or even a fish eye, he brings out a glimpse of the life of the people he has met on the road. Nishino’s personal memories, the memory of the place and the people all put together stand out against the backdrop of history and society, gathered up and inserted into an awkwardly deformed time and landscape, to then rise again in the complete panoramic image. In Nishino’s art, the accidental nature of his encounters gradually transforms into necessity.

One should look closely at the work, first in its entirety, then in its details.

The Po, described by Nishino in this “diorama map,” winds as if it were alive. It almost seems like a dragon, a mythological animal that runs through time and ascends to the sky to protect humankind.

— Il Cile è lontano... Non è una metafora dire che è ai confini del mondo. Quando si arriva in aereo o via nave a Santiago o Valparaíso non esistono connessioni per altre destinazioni e l’unica opzione possibile è quella di ritornare da dove si è arrivati. È un paese, ma è come fosse un’isola, delimitato dalla Catena delle Ande da un lato e dall’Oceano Pacifico dall’altro. Raggiungere questo territorio è difficile e ha un che di avventuroso anche ai nostri tempi. Attraversare una delle catene montuose più imponenti del mondo, acquistare un biglietto aereo costoso, navigare attraverso Capo Horn o il Canale di Panama sono le sole possibilità per raggiungere questo territorio.

Venirci impone un certo impegno.

Considerando questa condizione geografica determinante, il Cile si è andato formando in perpetua dualità, tra un’identità isolana concentrata su se stessa e incroci permanenti di migranti arrivati qui con le loro culture e le loro identità.

Cultura isolana egocentrica che si organizza tra pari, conoscenti e familiari.

Terra selvaggia che accoglie avventurieri, pionieri, conquistatori e migranti.

Prima di tutto, lo scontro tra le popolazioni originarie e la colonizzazione spagnola. Poi le comunità italiane, arabe, inglesi, croate, tedesche, francesi che hanno contribuito all’identità cilena.

Dopo la dittatura militare che ha mantenuto il paese nel silenzio e nell’isolamento più totali, il Cile si apre. Ha bisogno di ripulirsi, di spalancare le finestre di casa per permettere la circolazione di aria fresca. Con le nuove regole della globalizzazione, i suoi mezzi di comunicazione si rafforzano e si instaura un modello economico, sociale e politico che diffonde luce all’esterno ma che non sempre, lo sappiamo, irradia la stessa luce anche all’interno.

Il Cile si mette sul mercato, si promuove. E si trasforma in destinazione di migranti latinoamericani. Tutti i nostri vicini ci vedono come un Paradiso terrestre. Attraversano le frontiere di Argentina, Perù, Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela e Repubblica Domenicana, modificando la quotidianità. Sugli scaffali dei supermercati compaiono nuovi prodotti, sui mezzi pubblici si sentono accenti nuovi, veniamo a conoscenza di vite che hanno attraversato luoghi sconosciuti.

Nelle strade ci sono donne e uomini dalla pelle nera. Per la popolazione cilena l’orizzonte si allarga. Si sviluppano curiosità e rifiuto.

Anche se a gran parte del mondo sembra impensabile, questa realtà è nuova per il Cile.

E dà vita a un interrogativo.

Da quale distanza guardiamo la differenza? È questa la riflessione che la critica d'arte Catalina Mena affronta nel suo testo per il Festival Internazionale di Fotografia di Valparaíso 2017.

“La domanda mette profondamente in discussione i nostri legami sociali nel complesso contesto della cultura contemporanea. Qual è la giusta distanza che mi permette di ‘vedere l’altro come vero altro’? Noi stessi possiamo essere l’altro, come quando restiamo sconvolti davanti alla nostra stessa avversione e ci sentiamo come se fossimo la differenza. La distanza (fenditura, rottura, crepa) è necessaria per la nascita della

121 differenza e, con essa, del significato dell’identità stessa. Significato sempre sotto minaccia proprio a causa del suo rapporto dinamico con l’altro.

Gli esempi di intolleranza, discriminazione e violenza abbondano: escludere l’altro, eliminarlo dal campo visivo, ‘fare pulizia’. All’estremo opposto della medesima operazione, però, abbondano anche i discorsi che, con le migliori intenzioni, comportano il livellamento delle peculiarità e delle differenze.

Forse uno dei problemi più seri della pratica fotografica sta proprio nella domanda: ‘Da dove si guarda?’ Ed è difficile avere consapevolezza di tale posizione. Eppure è necessario avere il coraggio di metterla in discussione. La risposta più onesta dovrebbe essere: ‘Si guarda da dove si può’. Si guarda dai confini della soggettività, dalla nostra memoria, dal pregiudizio, dalla curiosità, dal desiderio, dalla paura. Si guarda a partire da ciò che sappiamo del mondo e di noi stessi ma, soprattutto, si guarda dal molto che non conosciamo.”

Cristóbal Olivares si è posto questa domanda quando ha deciso di avvicinarsi alle storie della vita degli emigranti domenicani. Non solo ha messo in discussione la sua distanza dall’altro, ma si è lasciato anche trasportare dalle incertezze imposte da un simile processo.

Il suo progetto oscilla senza sosta tra finzione e realtà.

All’inizio non è stato facile guardarsi negli occhi, perché questa ricerca della “giusta distanza” era un’intuizione non ben definita, sia per il fotografo sia per i protagonisti. Sono storie di vite non concluse quelle che vengono raccontate, che si modificano da una settimana all’altra, traiettorie fragili, precarie, diffidenti, dove soltanto il presente può esistere.

Non mostrando il proprio volto, le donne e gli uomini fotografati perdono la loro identità?

Sicuramente nascondono un’identità legale ma, nella fragilità, accentuano la loro appartenenza alla comunità umana. Qui entriamo nell’immaginazione, dove la fotografia propone dubbi e domande. Lontano dal documentarismo che si prefigge unicamente di fornire una testimonianza della realtà, davanti a noi sfilano immagini aperte

che spingono a una possibile transizione da storie singole a voci universali.

Olivares ci riporta alla concretezza con i video che riprendono la realtà delle migrazioni, con le foto conservate nel cellulare insieme alle voci che raccontano, a un certo volume, interrotte da silenzi.

Questo esercizio, che svela i limiti della fotografia, ci offre in modo sottile, attento e rispettoso nuovi percorsi di comprensione della realtà.

Questi racconti, infine, si proiettano sul paesaggio, sul deserto del grande Nord che costituisce la frontiera con i paesi vicini, un territorio che occorre attraversare per entrare in Cile.

Ancora una volta il fotografo ci riporta alla finzione. Ci viene consegnata una materia che prende forma a partire dall’immaginario dell’autore.

Il lavoro di Cristóbal Olivares sovrappone tempi, emozioni e realtà per avanzare verso un corpus che rende conto della nostra epoca partendo dalla regola che la fotografia permette di confondere in un punto memoria, illusione e istante.

— Chile is far away… It is not a metaphor to say that it is at one of the limits of the world. When one arrives by aeroplane or ship in Santiago or Valparaíso, there are no connections to other destinations; the only option is to return whence one has arrived. It is a country that is built in the same way as an island, with the Andes Mountains on one side and the Pacific Ocean opposite. A territory that it is difficult to deal with, that always involves a degree of adventure, even in our own time.

Crossing one of the world’s mightiest mountain ranges, buying an expensive air ticket, sailing around Cape Horn or through the Panama Canal: those are the only ways of getting to this territory.

Coming requires some type of effort.

Considering that crucial geographical condition, Chile has been built in a state of perpetual duality, between an island identity focused on itself and permanent crossings of immigrants who have arrived with their cultures and identities.

An egocentric island culture that is organised between peers, acquaintances, and relatives.

A savage land that receives adventurers, pioneers, conquistadors, and immigrants.

First came the clash between indigenous

peoples and Spanish colonisation. Thereafter, communities of Italians, Arabs, English, Croats, Germans, and French took part in Chilean identity.

After the military dictatorship that kept the country in total isolation and silence for years, Chile is opening up. It needs to clean itself, and to open the windows of the house so that fresh air can circulate. Together with new rules on globalisation, its means of communication are being strengthened and a new economic, social, and political model is being put in place, one that shines outwards, but we know that it does not always shine the same light into the back room.

Chile is selling itself, promoting itself, and it is transforming itself into a destination for Latin Americans. All our neighbours see us as a Garden of Eden. From Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic, they cross borders, and daily life is changed. Markets see new products on their shelves, new accents are heard on public transport, and we get to know the stories of lives lived in unknown places. Black-skinned people walk down the street. The horizon is being opened up for Chilean women and men. Curiosity and rejection are born.

Although it seems unthinkable for a great many people, that reality is new for Chile.

And now, a question is revealed in it.

From what distance do we look at difference?

That is the thought addressed by the art critic Catalina Mena in her text for the 2017 International Photo Festival of Valparaíso.

“The query profoundly questions our social links within the complex context of contemporary culture. What is the correct distance that allows me to ‘see the other as a legitimate other?’

An ‘other’ who can be oneself, as when one is engrossed in one’s own contrariness and experiences oneself as being the difference. Distance (fissure, rupture, or break) is necessary for difference to emerge, and with it, the sense of one’s own identity. A sense that is always under threat, precisely because of its dynamic relationship with the other.

There are innumerable examples of intolerance, discrimination, and violence: excluding the other, removing the other from one’s field of vision,

‘doing the cleaning.’ However, at the opposite extreme of the same operation, there are several examples of discourses that, with very good intentions, wind up levelling particularities and differences.

Perhaps one of the most serious problems of the practice of photography is precisely the question: ‘Where do we look from?’ And it is difficult to be conscious of that position. But one must dare to question it. The most honest reply would be: ‘We look from where we can.’ We look from the limits of subjectivity, from memory itself, from prejudice, curiosity, desire, fear.

We look from what we know of the world and of ourselves, but, above all, we look from the perspective of the much that we do not know.”

Cristóbal Olivares asked himself that question when he decided to get closer to the life stories of immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Not only did he question his distance from the other; he also let himself be carried along by the uncertainties imposed by that process.

His proposal is a to-and-from between fiction and reality.

In the beginning, it was not easy to look one another in the eye, because the search for the “right distance” was still in progress, for the photographer and for the subjects alike. They are unfinished life stories that change from week to week, trajectories that are fragile, precarious, and mistrustful, trajectories in which only the present can exist.

If they do not show their faces, do they lose their identity?

Based on their fragility, they conceal a legal identity, but they accentuate their belonging to the human community. Here we enter imagination, where the photograph puts forward uncertainties and questions. Far from the documentalism that only wants to obtain testimony of the truth, before us pass open images that prompt a possible journey from particular stories to universal voices.

Thereafter, Olivares brings us back to the concrete world with videos that film evidence of migrations, with photos safeguarded in the mobile telephone together with the narrator’s voice, with its volume and its silences. That exercise that unveils the limits of photography

123 gives us new ways of understanding reality in a subtle, attentive, and respectful manner.

Finally, the stories are projected on to the countryside, the desert of the great north that forms a border with neighbouring countries, a region that must be crossed to reach Chile.

Once again, we find ourselves prompted towards fiction. Receiving material that is articulated from the author’s imagination.

Olivares’s work superposes times, emotions, and realities to advance towards a body of work that gives an account of our time based on the precepts permitted by photography, bringing together memory, illusion, and the moment into a single point.

155 SARA CWYNAR — (Vancouver, Canada, 1985) Gli oggetti ready-made e le immagini che appaiono nei video e nelle fotografie di Sara Cwynar hanno il sapore del tempo che svanisce. Utilizzando molteplici strumenti, set di studio, collage, e tecniche di ri-fotografia, l’artista realizza scene composite a partire da annunci pubblicitari di riviste, da cartoline o cataloghi.

Il suo principale interesse speculativo è indagare come le immagini popolari e le costruzioni grafiche lavorano nella psiche di ciascuno di noi e come le loro strategie visive invadono la nostra coscienza. Nel libro Kitsch Encyclopedia (2013), Cwynar riflette su quanto le immagini familiari, sentimentali, tendano ad appianare le realtà spiacevoli, a coprire “i sistemi di controllo incardinati nella nostra vita sociale, economica, e politica”.

Cwynar propone immagini pubblicitarie ormai datate che mostrano il fallimento dei loro trucchi visivi e il declino del loro potere di seduzione, inesorabilmente rivelati dal tempo. Nelle sue opere l’artista mette in luce come ciò che una volta era familiare possa diventare estraneo; come l’oggetto feticizzato perda il suo splendore; come il suo fascino svanisca.

Sara Cwynar attualmente vive e lavora a Brooklyn, New York. Nel suo curriculum di studio annovera un MFA conseguito presso la Yale University di New Haven, USA, e un Bachelor of Design presso la York University di Toronto, Canada; ha inoltre studiato letteratura inglese alla University of British Columbia di Vancouver, Canada.

— (Vancouver, Canada, 1985) Sara Cwynar’s videos and photographs of found objects and images court feelings of time passing. Using studio sets, collage, and re-photography, she produces intricate tableaux that draw from magazine advertisements, postcards, or catalogues. Cwynar is interested in how design and popular images work on our psyches, in how their visual strategies infiltrate our consciousness. In her book,

Kitsch Encyclopedia (2013), she considers how familiar, sentimental images smooth over unpleasant realities, to cover up “the systems of control embedded within our social, economic, and political lives.”

She presents dated commercial images to expose the failure, with time, of their visual trickery and the waning of their seductive powers. Her works highlight how the once familiar becomes foreign, how the fetishized object loses its luster, how glamour fades.

Sara Cwynar currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She holds an MFA from Yale University, New Haven (USA); a Bachelor of Design from York University, Toronto (Canada); and studied English Literature at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, (Canada).

MARI BASTASHEVSKI — (San Pietroburgo, Russia, 1980) Mari Bastashevski è un’artista, scrittrice e ricercatrice. Nata in un paese che non esiste più, l’Unione Sovietica, vive attualmente in Svizzera, ma è spesso in giro per il mondo. Il suo lavoro – frutto in genere di ampie ricerche on line e sul campo – combina documenti a fotografie e testi, ed esplora l’intersezione tra individui, aziende private e amministrazioni pubbliche. In ordine di tempo, ha appena concluso il progetto 10,000 Things Out of China, un lavoro in cui si spinge nei meandri del mondo della logistica, spesso violenta, complessa e politicamente ambigua, grazie alla quale i prodotti realizzati in Cina raggiungono l’Europa e gli Stati Uniti. Tra gli altri suoi progetti figurano: It’s Nothing Personal, un’installazione che coniuga il linguaggio tecnocratico e lo spazio neutrale delle società di sorveglianza con le testimonianze di individui influenzati da questo genere di tecnologie. Quindi, ZimTm, una critica di autoriflessione sul conflitto inconciliabile tra sponsorizzazione aziendale e pratica critica, con un robot come controfigura dell’artista, dotato persino di un proprio account twitter, twitter.com/ZimTm. L’opera di Bastashevski è stata presentata

in Francia, Paesi Bassi, Stati Uniti, Italia, Svizzera, Australia, e pubblicata sul New Yorker, Le Monde, New York Times, Vice, solo per citarne alcuni. Nel 2016 l’artista ha usufruito di un assegno di ricerca presso il World e l’ISP di Yale, mentre nel 2018 collaborerà sempre in veste di ricercatrice con l’istituto Data and Society di New York. Nel 2011 ha beneficiato di una residenza d’artista alla Cité des Arts di Parigi e nel 2017 allo IASPIS di Stoccolma.

Ha inoltre ottenuto due borse di studio Magnum Emergency messe a disposizione dalla Magnum Foundation.

She is currently based in Switzerland, but is rarely at home. Her work – usually a result of extensive online and field investigations – combines documents with photographs and texts and explores the intersections between individuals, corporations, and states. She has recently concluded a project, 10,000 Things Out of China, a work that navigates through the violent, complex and politically ambiguous culture of logistics by which products made in China reach Europe and the United States. Her other projects include: It’s Nothing Personal, an installation juxtaposing the technocratic language and neutral space of surveillance firms with the testimonies of individuals affected by surveillance technology. And ZimTm, a self-reflective critique about an irreconcilable conflict of corporate sponsorship and critical practice, accompanied by an automaton stand-in for an artist with its own twitter account: twitter.com/ZimTm. Bastashevski’s work has been exhibited in France, the Netherlands, United States, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, and published in the NYT, Le Monde, NYT, Vice, among others. She was a 2016 World and ISP fellow at Yale and is a 2018 fellow at Data and Society. In 2011 she was awarded an artist in residency at Cité des Arts in France and in 2017 at IASPIS in Stockholm. She is a recipient of two Magnum Emergency grants from Magnum Foundation.

SOHEI NISHINO — (Hyogo, Giappone, 1982) Sohei Nishino realizza opera basate sulle sue esperienze personali, legate a viaggi e peregrinazioni. Nelle sue “mappe dioramiche” unisce fotografia, collage, cartografia e psicogeografia per creare paesaggi urbani stampati in grande

156 format. L’artista percorre solitario le vie di una città per circa tre mesi, cercando le prospettive più interessanti e accumulando centinaia di rullini. Poi stampa manualmente le immagini e le dispone minuziosamente in un grandi tableau, che fungerà da base per le sue fotografie a edizione limitata. A prima vista le mappe sono quasi astratte, ma quando le si esamina in dettaglio si delinea un intero diorama – il teatro in miniatura delle sue personali esplorazioni urbane.

Nishino si è laureato nel 2005 all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Osaka. Ha esposto le sue opere in molti paesi, ottenendo numerosi riconoscimenti, tra cui il “President Award”, Accademia di Belle Arti di Osaka (2004), “Young Eye Japanese Photographer Association Award” (2005), il “Canon New Cosmos Photography Award” (2005) e il “Canon Excellence Award” (2005). — (Hyogo, Japan, 1982) Sohei Nishino produces works based on his personal experiences obtained through walking and travelling. In making his “diorama maps,” he combines photography, collage, cartography and psycho-geography to create large prints of urban landscapes. He walks alone a city’s streets for an average of three months, exploring many vantage points and gathering hundreds of rolls of exposed film. He then patiently prints the photographs by hand and compiles them to form a tableau.

He will use it as the basis for his limited edition photographs From a distance the maps are almost abstract, it is not until we examine them in detail that the full diorama unfolds—the theatre of one man’s city played out in miniature.

Nishino graduated from Osaka University of the Arts in 2004. He has exhibited his work internationally and obtained numerous awards including “President Award,” Osaka University of Arts (2004), “Young Eye Japanese Photographer Association Award” (2005), “Canon New Cosmos Photography Award” (2005) and the “Canon Excellence Award”

(2005). He has also participated in several group shows, festivals and solo exhibitions: Daegu Photo Biennale, Korea (2010); “Out of Focus,” Saatchi Gallery, London (2012); “Contemporary Japanese Photography vol.10,” Tokyo, Metropolitan Museum of Photography (2012); “A Different Kind of Order: ICP Triennial,” New York (2013); KYOTOGRAPHY festival, Kyoto (2014); Tokyo International Photography Festival, Tokyo (2015); “Sohei Nishino CITIES,” Polka Gallery, Paris (2015). CRISTÓBAL OLIVARES — (Santiago, Cile, 1988) Cristóbal Olivares è un fotografo documentarista, con un profondo interesse per le questioni sociali. È co-fondatore di Buen Lugar Ediciones, una casa editrice indipendente specializzata in riviste e libri di fotografia.

Nel novembre 2015 ha pubblicato il libro A-MOR sul femminicidio e la violenza domestica in Cile, premiato come miglior libro fotografico dell’anno da POY Iberoamerica.

Dal 2014 alla metà del 2016 Olivares ha preso parte al VII Photo Agency Mentor Program.

Numerosi sono i premi, le residenze e le borse di studio che gli sono stati concessi da diverse organizzazioni, quali l’Open Society Foundations (USA), Photographic Museum of Humanity, FotoVisura (USA), PhotoEspaña, ENS (Colombia), Consiglio nazionale per la cultura e le arti (Cile), Images Singulières Festival (Francia), Querétaro Photofest (Messico), FIFV (Chile), Premio Rodrigo Rojas Denegri (Cile). — (Santiago, Chile, 1988) Cristóbal Olivares is a documentary photographer with special interest in social affairs. He is the Co-founder of Buen Lugar Ediciones an independent publishing house focusing on zines and books about

photography.

In November 2015 he published the book “A-MOR” about femicide and domestic violence in Chile, which has been awarded as best photobook of the year by POY Iberoamerica.

From 2014 to mid 2016 Olivares was part of the VII Photo Agency Mentor Program.

He has been awarded with prizes, residences and grants from different organizations such as Open Society Foundations (USA), Photographic Museum of Humanity, FotoVisura (USA), PhotoEspaña, ENS (Colombia), National Council for the Culture and Arts (Chile), Images Singulières Festival (France), Querétaro Photofest (Mexico), FIFV (Chile), Rodrigo Rojas Denegri Award (Chile) and 12 times winner at the National Press Photo Awards (FotoPrensa) in Chile including the Photo of the Year.

He currently works for different media outlets and NGO’s both in Chile and abroad.

His photographs have been published and exhibited in Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, USA, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, UK, Germany, China and India.
