Our SOLIDARITY MESSAGE

Dear friends, Thank you so much for joining us on our journey towards justice. If anything, 2021 has taught us the need to keep showing up for each other. This past year has shown us that the marginalized — BIPOC women, immigrant women, queer women, transgender women, gender non-conforming people, and people with disabilities — are and always have been at the forefront of defending and organizing for our communities. At Mass Jobs with Justice, we believe that those closest to pain should be closest to power. We are led by and predominately comprised by women of color, and we are rooted in our firsthand experiences of oppression as well as interpersonal and state violence. We work towards justice in the “sites of struggle": the workplace, the home, and in our communities. Throughout 2021, we built mutual aid networks, organized workplaces to advocate for workers, and poured into the streets to fight for racial justice. And through it all, we built a stronger community.

OUR HISTORY AS AN ORGANIZATION

1987 - THE BEGINNING The first gathering of Jobs with Justice included over 11,000 people at a convention hosted by the Communication Workers of America in Miami and pledged together to show up- not just for themselves- but for someone else’s fight at least five times a year.

LABOR MOVEMENT We believe collective bargaining is the most powerful way to address economic inequality and formed as a way of securing access to that tool by building active and engaged coalitions. Today there are over 40 chapters across the country, each with their own coalition grounded in local power.

WINS TOGETHER Together, in Massachusetts, we've been able to organize for the $1.5 billion Student Opportunity Act that was signed into law in 2019, served over 700 families through the Worcester-based Parents Union of Massachusetts (PUMA), and fundraised $2 million for MassUndocuFund.

ECONOMIC JUSTICE & WORKERS' RIGHTS

Workers across Massachusetts wake up every day to arbitrarily fluctuating schedules, unpredictable wages, and constant fear of sexual harassment and assault. It is the responsibility of Massachusetts Legislators to protect workers from abuse, and to ensure that every worker has a safe and dependable workplace.

The bills Fair Workweek and One Fair Wage provides robust protections for workers and their families by ensuring that hourly schedules are predictable and negotiable, and that tipped workers have economic and personal security.

IMMIGRANT JUSTICE & EDUCATION RIGHTS

In March 2020, JwJ - along with the Matahari Women’s Worker Center and the One Fair Wage Campaign - founded The Massachusetts UndocuFund for Covid-19 Relief.

Since then, we’ve raised $2 million in funds for undocumented immigrants who do not not qualify for federal assistance such as FEMA or unemployment benefits, but who are disproportionately impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic due to systemic racism in jobs, housing, and healthcare. To this date we’ve delivered checks to over 4,000 households in nearly every city and town in Massachusetts.
