DEAR PNM...

My name is Lexie, and I am the Panhellenic Vice President of Membership Recruitment.

It’s no secret that this past year and a half has been crazy, and still continues to be crazy. Who could have ever thought we'd all be sitting at home on Zoom for hours on end. While school is still strange: from wearing masks to social distancing, COVID testing, contact tracing, and everything in between, the one thing that has kept me sane during all this time has been the Panhellenic community at Mason.

I went through recruitment in Fall 2018 because I felt lost in such a big school. I did not have a clue what I was doing or what a sorority really was. I'll admit, recruitment weekend was overwhelming, but I knew I made the right decision because every chapter was so welcoming and inviting towards me. On Bid Day, I joined a community of amazing women that have been through every up and down with me. They have pushed me to apply for internships, leadership positions, and stand up to people who try and bring me down.

I am grounded in the values of the organization I belong to. However, being a part of the Panhellenic community is so much more than what you experience within your own organization. My three best friends are from three different chapters, but they are still the ones who take me out after a long day, plan a birthday surprise, and ask if there is anything they can do to help me.

As you embark on your Panhellenic journey, I ask you to do three things: let go of any preconceived notions, remember what values are important to you, and know everything will work out.

GREEK TERMINOLOGY As you learn more about Greek Life, you may come across unfamiliar terms during different parts of your membership journey. Here’s what you need to know: Active Member

A fully initiated member of a sorority who is currently participating as a member.

Alumna

A graduate of one’s collegiate chapter.

Badge

An insignia of fraternity or sorority membership worn only by initiated members.

Bid

An invitation to join a sorority.

Big

An active member assigned to be a personal mentor for a new member.

Chapter

A membership unit of a national or international fraternity or sorority.

Charter

Documentation that an individual chapter is recognized and operates according to their national organization.

Continuous Open Bidding

The process of extending bids on an individual basis immediately following the formal recruitment period. Also known as informal recruitment, the COB process

is less formal, and not all chapters will participate in continuous open bidding.

Disaffiliation

When a recruitment counselor temporarily separates herself from her sorority during the recruitment process to act as an unbiased resource for members participating in recruitment. After the recruitment process, she rejoins her sorority.

Formal Recruitment

A membership recruitment period during which a series of organized rounds are held by each NPC sorority, organized and implemented by the Panhellenic Council.

At Mason, formal recruitment is held over the course of four days, beginning on a Thursday and ending with Bid Day on the following Monday.

Initiation

A traditional ceremony that brings a new member into full membership of a sorority or fraternity. Once you are initiated into an NPC sorority, you are ineligible for membership in any other NPC sorority.

Legacy*

A daughter, sister or granddaughter of an initiated member of a sorority. *Being a legacy does not guarantee membership into that specific sorority. Each NPC member organization has its own policy for invitations to legacies during recruitment.

Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA)

This is a one-year binding agreement signed by a potential new member (PNM) when ranking chapters after preference round of recruitment.

National Panhellenic Conference

The umbrella body for 26 inter/national women’s fraternities and sororities. There are eight NPC organizations at GMU.

New Member

A woman who has accepted a bid from a sorority but is not yet an initiated, active member of that chapter. Chapters will have a new member process during which the new members learn more about the sorority and prepare them for initiation.

Panhellenic Council

A council consisting of an executive board and chapter delegates from each of the eight sororities on campus.

Philanthropy

Fundraisers, projects, events, or donations to raise money for nationally sponsored charitable organizations.

Potential New Member (PNM)

A student who is not yet affiliated with a chapter and is interested in becoming a part of the Fraternity and Sorority community (that’s you!).

Recruitment Counselor

A current member of a sorority who is disaffiliated from her chapter during recruitment in order to guide PNMs through the recruitment process. They are a resource for questions or concerns during primary recruitment. Each potential new member will be assigned a recruitment counselor during primary recruitment.

Ritual

The private traditions and practices of a sorority deeply rooted in the shared values and purpose of the members. Ritual serves as a reminder to each member of her responsibilities and inspires her to fulfill them. Rituals connect the past with the present and the future.

Sorority

Sororities are values-based social organizations that were originally founded to provide women a space to gather and share common interests, often in times when women were excluded from other campus organizations and activities.

Values-Based Recruitment*

A recruitment style that focuses on meaningful conversations between collegiate members and potential new members with the goal of recruiting women who will have a positive impact on chapters and the College Panhellenic community. The focus is on the values, benefits and obligations of membership for each organization. *The Panhellenic Council at George Mason University participates in values-based recruitment.

WHO WE ARE Made up of 26 women’s-only inter/national member organizations, the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is the world’s largest umbrella organization specifically charged with advancing the sorority experience. Through its advocacy, NPC seeks to enlist nearly 5 million sorority women in its efforts to showcase the transformational power of the sorority experience.

As values-based organizations, the 26 members of NPC live their missions, with their members providing millions of dollars in philanthropic support to dozens of worthy causes and pursuing millions of additional hours in community service. From supporting victims of sexual assault, to leading bystander intervention programs, to fighting for body-positive campus cultures, sorority women are at the forefront of solving some of the most pressing challenges facing collegiate women today.

NPC also supports a national network of collegiate and alumnae Panhellenic associations that are crucial to nurturing healthy fraternity and sorority communities. Through its programs and initiatives, NPC encourages the sharing of information, resources and best practices to ensure the sorority experience continues to meet the needs of today’s collegiate women.

The Panhellenic Creed We, as Undergraduate Members of women’s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities.

We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character, inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.

MEET OUR EXECUTIVE BOARD The George Mason University Panhellenic Executive Council consists of eight different positions, each of which serve our Greek community in different ways. Our council members work with chapters to promote a positive Greek presence for those inside and outside of our community. Council members serve our community throughout the year by hosting academic round tables, planning and executing recruitment, promoting chapter events, creating health and wellness programs, and providing learning opportunities to the newest members. No matter the letters, our Panhellenic Council stands together for the wellbeing of our Panhellenic sisters.

VERONICA MATA Alpha Omicron Pi

“I joined Student Government the second semester of my freshman year. Being a part of an organization that advocates for change at our campus is something that was always so important to me. I am running for Student Body Vice President because I know that with my leadership experience and consistent involvement on Mason’s campus I am the right person to advocate for and work in service to students. Being a part of AOII and SG have been amazing experiences that have enhanced my time at Mason. I am so thankful for the opportunities I have been given at Mason and I am so grateful to have the chance to add Student Body Vice President to that.”

Since her profile was published earlier this year, Mata and her running mate, Natalia Kanos, won the election and were officially sworn in as Student Body President and Vice President.

"Growing up in a military family, I was frequently moving across different states and countries.

It always sucked saying goodbye to the environment you’ve gotten used to, the amazing friendships you’ve made, and the reputation you’ve established for yourself. When going through fall recruitment, I wasn’t fully committed in being in a sorority but you never know what could be one of the best decisions in life until you give it a shot. With all the warm welcomes and diverse personalities, I began to fall in love with Gamma Phi. G-Phi has given me the opportunity to become a leader early on as a freshman, where I’ve been able to form friendships with those in organizations other than mine, collaborate for events, and inspire the amazing women around me. Going Greek has I motivated me on pushing further to make an impact in Panhellenic."

KAT SHARMA Zeta Tau Alpha

“Before college, everything I knew about Greek Life came from TV shows and movies. It wasn’t until spring preview before where the idea of joining a community that also offers leadership positions and allows for philanthropic pursuits became intriguing. However, as someone who spent the first 8 years of her life in Nepal and at times struggled to fit in, the concept of joining a historically white institution was intimidating. To my surprise, a Panhellenic sorority is where I feel the biggest sense of belonging at George Mason.

As a new member, I was taught that the foundational precept of Zeta Tau Alpha was love, the greatest of all things. My sisters make it easy for me to remember that every day. Whether I am grieving a loss, recovering from a horrible car accident, or struggling to find a sense of purpose during a global pandemic, my sisters are always one of the first people I lean on. I later served as the Vice President of PR on Panhellenic Exec.

With the help of my fellow exec members and my very kind advisor Hammed, I developed skills that later helped me get internships and further my career. It’s crazy to think I feel so much love and acceptance and ultimately help lead an organization that I was once so scared to join.”

“When I went through formal recruitment, I had no idea what I was doing. I was the first in my family to go through recruitment, so I had no idea what to expect. I decided to just go through the experience to see what would happen.

After the weekend was over I was ready to rest, unsure of what would happen next. It turns out that the result of the process would be receiving a bid to my top sorority, Pi Beta Phi. When accepting my bid, I had no idea how important it would be to me, as it would shape my collegiate career. Then, the summer between my freshman and sophomore year, I attended the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI).

This experience allowed me to learn from other leaders within the Greek community.

After leaving the conference, I wanted to do anything I could to help create positive change. Little did I know that when I accepted my bid that it would mean so much more than gaining membership to a sisterhood; it helped me to grow and realize what my true passion and purpose is in this world.”

LUCY CLARKE Zeta Tau Alpha

“As a commuter student who lived 30 minutes away from campus, I was extremely lonely when I had gaps in between my classes. I would go to the JC Library, Fenwick, or just find an empty table in the JC and listen to music or do homework.

While I did meet girls in some of my classes, they had already established friend groups because they lived on campus and were experiencing social interactions in places that I wasn’t going to: dorms and dining halls.

I looked into joining a sorority because I wanted to meet girls, to connect to GMU a little more, and to have that home away from home. Going through formal recruitment as a freshman was really nerve-racking because I knew nothing about sororities. I was scared that I wouldn’t be accepted for who I am because I heard every stereotype imaginable about sorority girls.

Fortunately, I’m super happy that I went through recruitment because I found what I was looking for: Zeta Tau Alpha is my home. She gave me my best friends, my lovely big, my littles, a deeper love for breast cancer education & awareness, and a sense of belonging on campus. Zeta is a sisterhood. Individual and collective achievements never go unnoticed, sisters encourage other sisters to break out of their shells to try new things, and the bonds we have created with each other are ultimately stronger because of this.”

“The summer before my freshman year I decided to sign up for Panhellenic recruitment.

I was unsure whether being in a sorority was for me but thought recruitment would be a great way to make friends. Not only was I welcomed into the Panhellenic community with open arms, but I found my second family in Kappa Delta. I quickly got involved with leadership in my chapter: I am currently serving as my chapter’s Secretary and served as the VP-Membership in 2020 which got me more involved with the greater Panhellenic community.

During this time I got to know the women in other chapters better and was given the opportunity to encourage other women on campus to find their second family just like I found mine! Being part of a sorority helps inspire me to be the best version of myself that I can be. My Kappa Delta and Panhellenic sisters support me in my aspirations, encourage me to seek further leadership opportunities, and uplift me when I am feeling down. Joining a Panhellenic organization was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my collegiate experience so far!”

“My Panhellenic experience shaped me into the professional I am today. In undergrad, I found internships, positions, and jobs through Panhellenic networking. I was encouraged, challenged, and rewarded to succeed academically and found that I received my best grades when I used Greek Life as a support system. As Panhellenic President, I was constantly surrounded by strong, diverse women. I grew as a leader from the minute I signed up for recruitment to my last day as a collegiate. My love for philanthropy translated perfectly into my career.

My job is planning events for people to thrive in the communities they worked so hard to protect.

I handle baby showers, holiday meals and toys, back-to-school items, and resources for families across Maryland, D.C., Virginia, and West Virginia.

As a member of Gamma Phi Beta, I was constantly working with empowering young girls through Girls on the Run and I still use contacts from my undergraduate years to help military families with young daughters. My love of helping others has never changed and I am forever proud to support local communities, just as I did as a sorority woman. Socially, I truly became myself through my sorority. Coming from out-of-state I did not know anyone and I was welcomed with open arms to not only my sorority but all eight. I consider all of Panhellenic at Mason my family and that has not changed. My experiences made me who I am and the women I surrounded myself with became my favorite people in the world. I went Greek to succeed academically, professionally, and socially and I have walked away with a support system that has changed my life for the better.”

“Coming to Mason as an out of state student in the middle of COVID-19 and nearly every aspect of of college being online, I was longing to find a community where I would feel at home. I decided to go through formal recruitment in Fall 2020 and was blessed to find a true sisterhood in Chi Omega. Though my first year in the Panhellenic community was certainly a bit different, it has given me the opportunity to grow as an individual and leader and to surround myself with the most kind, genuine, and driven women. As cliché as it sounds, rushing was one of the best decisions I could’ve made for myself and I am forever grateful for the Panhellenic experience.”

PNM ORIENTATION

Here you will be able to get more information on what your weekend will be like. You will have the chance to briefly talk to all eight chapters before a small presentation on what you can expect from the weekend, as well as what to wear each day. You will also get to meet your recruitment counselors who will be your guides throughout the process. You can go to them at any time to ask questions or express concerns.

ROUND 1: SISTERHOOD

On Round 1, you will have the opportunity to meet all eight chapters! Throughout the day you will get a better idea as to what each chapter’s values are so that you are able to align yourself with those that you believe you share common values with. You will travel in small groups with your recruitment counselors for the entirety of Day 1.

Types of conversations: You will be having get-to-know-you conversations in this round, including what you did over the summer, what hobbies and interests you have, where you call home, and much more.

ROUND 2: PHILANTHROPY

On Round 2 you will have the ability to visit up to five chapters and learn about their individual philanthropies and other service events that they take part in. You’ll have the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the core values each chapter prides itself on, while also seeing the service they do for the national philanthropies, as well as our local community.

Types of conversations: You should expect to talk about how you have been involved in community service and how you see yourself contributing to the university and communities within the D.C. Metro area. Each chapter you visit will discuss the requirements of membership, including academics, financial obligations, time commitments and community service, so we encourage you to ask questions!

ROUND 3: PREFERENCE

Round 3 is the final day of recruitment! You will have the chance to visit a maximum of two chapters and here you will learn some of the more sacred aspects and values of each chapter and why their members are so proud to call it home.

Types of conversations: During this round, you will be talking about what means the most to you. This can range from family and friends to other important aspects of your life. The chapters will be talking about their organization's values and how they relate to your personal values. On this day, you should also be having deeper conversations about how you could fit into the chapter. You will be talking to the members about why they chose their organization and how you could contribute to that sisterhood. Focus on what group is going to make you the best version of yourself.

BID DAY

On Bid Day, new members receive their invitations, or bids, to join a sorority. It is a day when potential new members officially meet their new sisters. Chapters will organize fun activities for you to get to know your new member class and more members of the chapter that evening.

The new member period can last as few as four weeks or span an entire semester, depending on the chapter. New member meetings are typically held one night a week.

During this time, you learn about the history of your chapter, and your inter/national organization. Many scholarship, philanthropic and social activities are planned by the chapter to help you get to know your sisters and other members of your new member class.

EXPECTATIONS OF MEMBERSHIP FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS

Joining a Panhellenic chapter carries a financial commitment that is expected to be fulfilled throughout the years of chapter membership. The financial obligations of membership are often met by the member themselves through a job or customized payment plans*. The cost of dues differs between chapters, so it is important to ask questions about finances during recruitment!

On average, new members can expect to pay $725 for the first semester of membership. This amount includes several one-time costs, such as national fees and a membership pin.

HOUSING

George Mason University currently does not have housing facilities for our Panhellenic organizations. However, many of our sisters opt to live together through both on and off campus housing, displaying the lifelong sisterhood that Panhellenic life promotes.

TIME COMMITMENT

Our Panhellenic community prides itself on high levels of participation in university and council events that occur throughout the school year. While there are many optional events provided within each chapter, members should expect their attendance to be required at chapter meetings, philanthropy events and any other mandatory programming within the cost of dues. The specific requirements are covered by each chapter during Philanthropy Round. *Payment plans are only available for initiated chapter members Expectations of Membership • 23

RECRUITMENT FAQ'S HOW LONG IS EACH DAY DURING RECRUITMENT?

Every day of recruitment is different. The first round will consist of eight 30-minute parties, the second round will be five 45-minute parties and the last round will be two hour-long parties. There will be breaks in between each party. More on the specifics of each day will be answered during orientation and you will have the ability to talk to your recruitment counselor about any time conflicts you may have.

WHAT IF I AM GOING TO BE ABSENT FOR ONE OF THE DAYS OF RECRUITMENT?

Please let your recruitment counselor know during orientation and she will give you a form to fill out. If you can’t make it to the orientation you may email gmusororityrecruitment@gmail.com DOES EVERYONE GET A BID?

Any woman who goes through the process of recruitment is not guaranteed a bid. Formal recruitment is a mutual selection process where both the chapters and women going through recruitment must select one another.

WHAT IS THE POLICY ON HAZING?

George Mason University, as well as all eight Panhellenic sororities on campus, have a zero tolerance policy for hazing.

WHAT IS COB?

Continuous Open Bidding (COB) begins after the conclusion of primary recruitment and continues throughout the academic year. You are only eligible to participate in COB if you have not matched to a chapter during primary recruitment. COB events are usually very relaxed and might include things like having a movie night, going bowling or other informal activities. Participating sororities will contact you to invite you to attend their membership activities or host open events that anyone can attend. Keep in mind, you will not hear from all the sororities. Some chapters fill their total during the formal recruitment process and are not eligible to participate in COB.

"The COB process was actually a lot less intimidating than I thought it would be.

I'm naturally a very reserved and anxious person, so I knew that it would benefit me best to go through informal recruitment.

Although I was a junior at the time, the women I met with were very accepting to the point that little things like being an upperclassman, commuter, or transfer student didn't matter. ALPHA OMICRON PI Alpha Omicron Pi is an international organization geared towards inspiring ambition within its members and communities. Alpha Omicron Pi proudly supports the Arthritis Foundation with a focus in juvenile arthritis. In an effort to support this cause, our chapter holds multiple events such as Smoke Out – a carnival-themed BBQ, Bowl-Out – a bowling tournament for all organizations on campus, and Strike Out – where we partner up with the Washington Nationals to sell tickets whose sales go directly to the Arthritis foundation.

CHI OMEGA Founded in 1895 at the University of Arkansas, Chi Omega is the largest women's fraternal organization in the world.

Since 2002, Chi Omega has been working with MakeA-Wish. Since the start of this alliance, Chi Omega has raised more than 26 million dollars and has volunteered over 1.2 million hours for Make-A-Wish. Through this, all Chi Omegas can understand the importance of service to others as a founding principle of our Sisterhood.
