Fire (Polydor, 1968) Megalómano, histriónico e indiscutiblemente bizarro, Arthur Brown obtuvo un éxito sin precedentes con su primer sencillo gracias a un riff incendiario de Vincent Crane, futuro teclista de Atomic Rooster. Importado a nuestro país por Los Sírex y recuperado una década más tarde por la francesa Lizzy Mercier Descloux, asombró al mismísimo Alice Cooper gracias a su delirante puesta en escena. "Traigo ¡FUEGO! / y te vas a quemar", advertía Brown a su público mientras bailaba como un poseso, ataviado con una bata de lentejuelas y ¡un yelmo en llamas! del que tenía que desprenderse al primer estribillo. El muy inconsciente abusó tantas veces del chiste que echó a perder para siempre su cuero cabelludo.

"I bring FIRE! / And you'll burn", Brown warned his audience while he danced like a possessed man, wearing a sequined gown and a helmet on fire! which he must throw away on the first chorus. Fuego (1969) La banda sonora original de uno de los melodramas pasados de rosca que Armando Bo (el Russ Meyer pampero) escribió, dirigió e interpretó a finales de los años sesenta junto a su esposa, la exuberante Isabel "Coca" Sarli. Puro exceso calenturiento a costa de una ninfómana incurable, servido a ritmo de tango y exotic music, que incluye cumbres de la
psicotronía libidinosa como Llamas en tu cuerpo de Luis Alberto del Paraná y Los Paraguayos. ¿Qué más necesitan para hacerse con el correspondiente DVD? Lo editan los chiflados de Something Weird Video y ofrece cuanto promete: violencia, mugre y desnudos gratuitos en formato estereofónico. ¡Suave, que me estás quemando!

Jump in the Fire (RCA Victor, 1971) En la adrenalínica recta final de "Uno de los nuestros" (Martin Scorsese, 1990), Ray Liotta se pone fino de farlopa antes de ir a recoger a su hermano al hospital. Pisa a fondo el acelerador para llegar a tiempo de condimentar la salsa de los espaghetti; meterse otra raya, vender una partida de armas y apurar los restos mientras observa a los helicópteros de la policía sobrevolando su propiedad. Un contexto muy apropiado para los eufóricos versos de Nilsson: "puedes trepar una montaña / puedes nadar en el mar / puedes saltar al fuego... / pero nunca ser libre". El autor de Without You, One y Everybody's Talkin’ sabía lo que cantaba. Él también iba hasta las cejas.

Lloyd Cole & The Commotions
Forest Fire (Polydor, 1984) El poso existencial de las lecturas universitarias de Cole hicieron mella en su estilo como letrista. Joan Didion, Renata Adler, Simon de Beauvoir y Norman Mailer forman parte de los paisajes calcinados de "Rattlesnake", uno de los títulos imprescindibles del pop británico de los ochenta. Por más que Los Planetas se reserven el derecho a réplica, los versos de Cole calan más hondo que el plomo fundido: "hay un incendio cada vez que nos encontramos (...) / es tan solo una metáfora / para un amor ardiente / que no te hace sonreír, como un incendio forestal“. ¿Qué otra cosa cabría esperar del firmante de Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken? Cenizas; nada más que cenizas.
The existential sediment of the universitary readings of Cole made an impression on his style as a lyricist. Joan Didion, Renata Adler, Simon de Beauvoir and Norman Mailer are among the charred landscape sof "Rattlesnake", one of the essential titles of the British pop of the eighties.
