After designing a really gorgeous bracelet and writing a tutorial for it, I realized there were some obstacles to estimating how much wire I needed for my coils. For accuracy, I sometimes measure in metric lengths, and since I was raised in the U.S., I sometimes measure in Imperial units – inches and feet. Converting back and forth to find my material needs can be frustrating – and I realized first hand the issues different members of our crafting community face. So in an effort to make this a little bit easier – I have gathered several pieces of information in one place. There are charts for the common wire gauges in American Standard Gauge (AWG) from 30g to 0g showing the gauge measurements in both inches and mm. There is also a chart showing metric mandrels from 2mm to 10mm in quarter increments and the diameter (gauge) converted to inches. Finally, I have put together tables showing the length of wire needed to make coils of any gauge wire into coils around any size mandrel from 30g through 10mm. I hope you find this document useful in your jewelry making! Perri Jackson www.ShaktipajDesigns.com
