BENJAMIN LIPIEC MARYVILLE MAYOR
AN EASY PLACE TO CALL HOME
M
aryville is an easy place to call home. We’re a small community with pride in our strong traditions of education, agriculture and entrepreneurial spirit. Tucked away in northwest Missouri, we’ve got enough space to not feel crowded, but with easy access to nearby urban centers so we always feel connected. It’s a place where community is what you make it, and although we’re a small town, we’re a community committed to doing big things. It’s an exciting time to be in Maryville, as we reshape the look and feel of our community for the future through ambitious new infrastructure projects unparalleled among cities our size, through a downtown revitalization that continues to make us a regional shopping and entertainment destination, through the expansion of tourism drivers like the unique activities available at Mozingo
Lake Recreation Park, and so much more. But mostly, it’s an exciting time to be in Maryville because of the different ways all sorts of people have decided to make it their home, weaving little pieces of themselves into the fabric of our community — and we’re stronger for it. As you get to know Maryville a little bit better through the pages of this Viewbook, I’m confident you’ll find there’s no place quite like it. Whether you’re just browsing, considering a new home or business venture here, or were just drawn in by the cover and found yourself intrigued, I hope you’ll find something about our community that speaks to you. And if you don’t, it just means there’s even more of a place for a voice like yours here in Maryville. Benjamin Lipiec Mayor Maryville, Missouri

GROWING TOGETHER
I
n Maryville, there’s never a shortage of moments to celebrate together or events to take part in. Every Spoofhound and Bearcat home game brings with it a wave of green to the streets and flags to yards, along with events like community pep rallies and parades. We love our Spoofhounds and Bearcats! During the spring and summer, Maryville is the place to be as the event season heats up.
WORLD'S SHORTEST ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE
SPRING EVENTS In March, line up along Market Street in front of Burny’s Sports Bar & Upper Deck to try and catch a glimpse of the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade. You’ll have to squeeze in to make sure you catch it — the parade route is only 80 feet long!
For Easter, hundreds from around the county bring their kids to find the Easter Bunny’s eggs in an annual Easter Egg Hunt held at Donaldson Westside Park. Legend has it that in the 40 years the Easter Bunny has been hiding his eggs at the event, there’s still one that hasn’t been found … .

SUMMER EVENTS And nothing signals summertime in Maryville quite like the Nodaway County Fair. Attracting thousands from the surrounding areas to the downtown square for the carnival rides, local and national music acts and of course the fried food, the fair — and the accompanying 4-H/FFA livestock show — is classic smalltown community at its best. Throughout the summer, hundreds take their picnic blankets and lawn chairs to Maryville Parks and Recreation’s Concerts in the Park, bringing in regional bands to play through the sunset as local food vendors set up shop at Donaldson Westside.

The Nodaway Chorale performs at the First Christian Church in Maryville. The choral group performs a holiday concert each winter.
WINTER EVENTS Come winter, more than a hundred individual vendors and businesses pack the Maryville Community Center for the Christmas Craft Fair, organized by Maryville Parks and Recreation. And speaking of Christmas, Maryville gets all sorts of visitors around that holly jolly time — from Santa Claus to the Grinch! Every Christmas season starts with a parade downtown led by a Grinch, selected by the community in a charity fundraiser. Santa makes his first appearance of the season at the end of the parade in Franklin Park for Maryville Parks and Recreation Winter Wonderland display. And kids will have an opportunity to let Santa know what they want for Christmas each year when he stops by the Maryville Community Center for Breakfast in Whoville! Each year a few local families open their homes to the public for the annual Christmas Homes Tour which is hosted by Under the Son Ministries. Funds raised are used to support Gethsemane Home in northern Thailand. The Nodaway Chorale holds a Christmas Concert each year in early December and many other holiday events offer fun for families.

MARYVILLE: ‘A SPECIAL PLACE’ TO PLAY Maryville is known as Titletown for a reason and the Spoofhounds of Maryville High School have contributed a lot to that nickname. Over the years the Spoofhounds have won 11 team state championships across all sports with the most recent being the volleyball
team’s state championship in 2020. The football team has the most state titles with five including four since 2009 and three under Maryville native and head coach Matt Webb. Webb often speaks of the pride he and his team take playing in front of the big crowds at the Hound Pound.

The Spoofhounds have enjoyed plenty of individual successes too with individual state champions in track and field, cross country, wrestling and golf. The most recent individual state champion was sprinter Brooklynn Holt-
man, who won the 200-meter and 400-meter state championships in 2021. That championship culture extends beyond the high-level to the very active youth and middle-school programs in town.

BEARCATS: A WINNING BRAND What Mel Tjeerdsma built for Maryville and Northwest Missouri State University is a winning culture that the community can take pride in. The Hall of Fame football coach took over a struggling program in 1994 and started his tenure 0-13, but by the time he hung up his whistle in 2010, Tjeerdsma had built one of Division-II’s premier football programs. Tjeerdsma put three national championship trophies in cases at Northwest and Maryvillenative Adam Dorrell added three more. Longtime Bearcat assistant coach Rich Wright now carries on that winning tradition. “There is something about being in this little town and being in our stadium and having a home crowd advantage that is just a lot of fun,” Wright said following a game during the 2021 season. “It was a great atmosphere.” While Tjeerdsma was the founding father of the recent era of Bearcat football, the other sports at Northwest have followed suit in the success and building a passionate fanbase.

Northwest men’s basketball has won twostraight national championships and three of the last four national titles under coach Ben McCollum. “It’s a great day to be a Bearcat right now, that is for sure,” Northwest men’s basketball star Ryan Hawkins said after the 2021 national championship. “The feeling never gets old.” Bearcat soccer and volleyball have each experienced their best year ever in 2021 with NCAA Tournament berths. The Bearcat men’s tennis team was a national quarterfinalist in 2020. Hiba Mahgoub delivered the Northwest women’s track and field team its first-ever outdoor national champion in 2021. That winning culture extends throughout the Bearcat sports and Maryville. “It is all those kids, all the managers, all the assistants, all the everything,” McCollum said after the 2021 national title. “That is how you build culture. That is how you build a program.”

BUILDING THE FUTURE
M
aryville is in a time of transformation, building on a strong foundation of the past to ensure a future that’s brighter than ever. At our front door and down our busiest retail corridor, South Main Street, we’re in the process of transforming its look and feel through a once-in-a-lifetime project. In 2018, the South Main Corridor Improvement Project was approved for a $10.5 million federal BUILD grant, allowing the city to expand the most important traffic artery in town into one that’s bigger, safer, and built with an eye toward growth. The project is emblematic of how our community comes together to solve big problems in special ways — only three other cities in Missouri were approved for the highly competitive BUILD grants in 2018, and in competition with hundreds of other cities across the nation, Maryville’s plan and tenacity stuck out enough to win the grant.

The new facility began operation on September 2020. R. KEITH WOOD PUBLIC SAFETY FACILITY On the corner of Vine and First streets is a new, state-of-the-art public safety facility, named for longtime Maryville Public Safety Director Keith Wood. Taxpayers supported the construction of the building, which houses not only the Maryville Police and Fire departments, but also a consolidated 911 dispatch center that makes Maryville one of the most technologically sophisticated operations for first responder communication and response in the region. When it comes to safety, the Maryville community comes together to spare no expense.
Jessica Rickabaugh, dispatch supervisor for Northwest Regional Communications, talks about the new dispatch service with members of the community on tour of the R. Keith Wood Public Safety Facility in 2020. She said the center itself was designed with plans for possible future expansion. 26 Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce

CARL & CHERYL HUGHES FIELDHOUSE On the campus of Northwest Missouri State University sits Missouri’s largest freestanding structure north of Kansas City: the Carl & Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse. The 137,000-square-foot sports and events complex is the product of one of the largest public-private partnerships in the region’s history, a $21 million effort shared among the city of Maryville, Northwest and private donors. Inside, the Fieldhouse features a 90-yard practice turf, a 300-meter indoor competition track, batting cages, tennis courts, state-of-theart athlete facilities and spectator seating for sporting events. It’s also tailor-made for conventions and other activities, outfitted with three
theater-style classrooms with full A/V hookups, WiFi and an indoor flooring system that allows for seamless conversion. Throughout the year, the Fieldhouse plays host to practices and games for a number of sports for both Northwest teams and teams from the Maryville R-II School District, along with events like regional tournaments, sports camps and conventions. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic the Fieldhouse has been the site of the quintessential definition of a community partnership as it was utilized for mass vaccination events a threeway partnership between the university, the Nodaway County Health Department and Mosaic Medical Center - Maryville.

INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE
I
t might not look like it on a map, but nestled in northwest Missouri, Maryville and Nodaway County are at the cutting edge of forwardlooking green power initiatives and implementation of broadband internet. On the way into town, it’s hard to miss one of the most striking features on the horizon: wind turbines. Nodaway County is currently home to three wind farms, with the potential for more: White Cloud wind farm, a 236MW operation south and west of Maryville; Tenaska Clear Creek Energy Center, a 242MW wind farm north of Maryville; and the Conception Wind Farm, a 50MW facility southeast of Maryville near Conception Junction.
GIGABIT INTERNET
Recycling supervisor Chris Redden explains to elementary students the process of grinding waste paper into dense pellets that are then burned as an energy source to heat and cool campus buildings at Northwest Missouri State University.
UNIVERSITY PELLET PLANT Environmental innovations don’t end there. Since the early 1980s, Northwest Missouri State University has been recognized nationally for its commitment to alternative fuels. The university, for example, harvests no trees for fuel utilized by its power plant, instead relying only on wood chips that were previously discarded by the forest products industry as unwanted byproducts
of their manufacturing practices. Another program pelletizes waste paper products and biomass waste from industrial and agribusiness sources and cleanly uses them as fuel in the university energy system. Today, Northwest meets 80-85 percent of its energy needs without reliance on petroleumbased fuels, saving millions of dollars and reducing its carbon footprint in the process.
Want to download a 4K movie in minutes? Hold a videoconference without dropping out? Or just be able to stream Netflix in more than one room at once? How about all of the above at the same time? That’s the bare minimum every business and household in Maryville has access to through gigabit internet, offered by two providers in city limits — Suddenlink Communications and United Fiber Cooperative.
LETTUCE DREAM Lettuce Dream, a nonprofit organization, provides innovative career education and community inclusion opportunities for people with disabilities through growing fresh hydroponic produce year-round. The facility grew its first crop of lettuce in 2016, and now has distribution deals with stores and Jennie Moore began as the new director of Lettuce Dream in restaurants locally and as 2021. She has a background in disability services and has far away as Kansas City. served on the Lettuce Dream board since its inception in 2013.
U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, who represents north Missouri, visited Maryville in 2019 for a tour of Bolder Industries. The company recycles tires into more environmentally conscious products like Bolder Black, which is an alternative to virgin carbon black.
BOLDER INDUSTRIES Maryville is also home to the main production facility of Bolder Industries, a growing global company that makes the innovative and more environmentally friendly substance Bolder Black to replace carbon black — a compound primarily used to color ink, plastic and paint and as reinforcement in tires and other rubber products. At the Bolder Industries plant in Maryville, scrap tires are recycled into Bolder Black without a drop-off in quality. The Maryville facility recycles more than two million scrap tires annually — large enough to recycle and reuse every scrap tire produced in the Kansas City metro area. The plant diverts nearly 50 million pounds of waste from landfills annually, and operates with a positive net energy balance. The facility recently started an expansion project to update internal processes and create more jobs, thus positioning it and Maryville as a base of operations as the company begins operating worldwide.

f you want to get to know a small town, check out its downtown — and Maryville’s no different. Walk around downtown Maryville and you’ll find an eclectic mix of the essential and the never-knew-you-needed. Whether it’s a place to eat, drink, find a souvenir, go shopping, or just to hang out with friends or soon-to-be-friends, downtown Maryville’s got it — and keeps on getting more. A years-long beautification project continues to transform the look and feel of the downtown area, and businesses have responded by filling every spot on the square from corner to corner. On one corner, you’ll also find the Downtown Maryville Pocket Park, a collaboration between the Maryville Downtown Improvement Organization and the city that offers an oasis of green. And throughout the year, celebrations find their home in downtown Maryville, including the World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Nodaway County Fair, the annual Christmas parade, the Downtown Trick or Treat, the Art, Rhythm and Brews festival and more.
At the center of the Downtown Maryville Pocket Park is a granite, 4,500-pound National Humane Alliance fountain that first sat in Maryville’s downtown in 1911, providing water for horses, dogs and cats. The park is also home to another piece of Nodaway County history, a replica of the Happy Hollow school — a one-room schoolhouse once situated in Pickering in Nodaway County — that includes part of the original building. The shelter house included work done by the building trades class at Northwest Technical School. SMALL BUSINESS Maryville is home to a vibrant small business community, made up of passionate local business owners who serve as the lifeblood of Maryville’s downtown. A weekend hub that draws in visitors from across the region to spend the day downtown, taking in the retail attractions, grabbing a bite to eat and a drink, and staying for an evening’s event. Downtown Maryville and the surrounding areas offer an comfortable mix of the essential needs, tasty foods and specialized services.

ACCEPTED. THE WORLD’S SAFEST. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
In early 2020, we challenged our team to make Nucor the safest steel company in the world. Within weeks of that challenge, we were fighting a global pandemic, and the world faced an uncertain future. Yet the team never lost sight of our most important value – the health, safety and well-being of our Nucor family. The result was the safest year in Nucor’s history.
