SISTER SCHOOL ZAMBIA
This year saw a re-connection to St. Joseph’s School in Chivuna, a fellow RSHM and de-facto 'sister' school in Zambia. Under the guidance of Sister Deborah Jamali RSHM, who is facilitating the development of this partnership, students from the Student Goals and Implementation Committee (SGIC) met online with girls in their equivalent group JPIC (Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation) in Zambia. The girls spoke to each other about their different countries and their shared experiences. The girls from Zambia explained to our students that they have been working to raise money for their community, particularly a nearby orphanage, St. Michael’s. JPIC are also raising awareness of women’s rights, the trafficking of women and children, identifying issues related to poverty in their communities and creating ways to care for the environment. The St. Joseph’s girls asked incredibly poignant questions about the life of women in the UK and explained some of the challenges that girls and women face in their community and culture. From this connection arose the pilot for peer-tutoring sessions between Marymount and St. Joseph’s in Science, Mathematics and English, as well as a Book Club. These sessions, run twice a week, brought together the students for some fun lessons based on shared curricula. Peer tutors adapting quickly to the different ages in the classes as well as some alltoo-familiar technical issues surrounding online learning! Both student groups are excited to work together again next year on this project, as well as continued fundraising for St. Michael’s.
