WELCOME TO

DISTINCTION It’s easy to become jaded after 32 years in the news business. I’ve seen hundreds of homes and gardens and interviewed close to 1,000 people. But just when I think I’ve seen or heard it all, I’m surprised.

Let’s start with Joe Negri. Generations of Pittsburghers know him as Handyman Negri, the guy who fixed stuff in “Mister Rogers Neighborhood.” Kids could see he also played guitar, but only jazz fans know that he’s a worldclass musician who still performs and inspires today. His story begins on Page 64.

Then there’s Sewickley — a Native American village that became a summer getaway for wealthy Pittsburghers. I’ve visited enough to know there are some great restaurants there (Page 27), but I had no idea that Sweetwater Center for the Arts taught cooking, home brewing and acting along with painting and sculpture, or that it annually exhibits the work of some of the area’s best AfricanAmerican artists (Page 32).

Of course, our beat writers are rarely surprised. Pet Tales columnist Linda Fuoco guessed that Debbie Numrich Campbell used her own dogs in her Day Automotive commercials (Page 17) and beer writer Bob Batz was only a little surprised to find so many craft breweries frothing by the Ohio River (Page 47). Look for more surprises in this issue of Distinction!

SEE eyewear (5533 Walnut St., Shadyside): Need affordable, fashionable frames? This coast-to-coast chain opened its first Pittsburgh storefront earlier this year and specializes in what it calls “hip without the rip” eyewear and sunglasses. The latter start at $99 and come in many colors, sizes, patterns and customizable tints. Most styles are sold in limited quantities, meaning shoppers aren’t likely to see too many others sporting the same shades.

“Oversized and solid tints are very, very big,” says Jill Smyers, who manages the Pittsburgh location. “We like to debunk the myth that there’s just a certain shape for a certain face. We think you can try anything, wear anything. As long as it fits your face right, any style works.”

Phonetic Computer Eyewear (shop online at phoneticeyewear.com): If you suffer from digital eye strain, give glasses from Phonetic Computer Eyewear a try. The Pittsburgh-based company launched a couple of years ago as the sister brand for Penn Avenue Eyewear, another homegrown eyewear site. Check it out for unique styles such as Marilyn and Drifter frames done in wood. What’s even better? Each is less than $40.

Eyetique (various locations across Pittsburgh): Nearly 40 years ago, Norman Childs opened the first Eyetique in Squirrel Hill. That one storefront turned into another in Wilkins, which morphed into several others. Then came the Norman Childs Eyewear brand, 3 Guys Optical (eye exams and designer eyewear at reduced prices) and Chromos Eyewear, a brand his son started about four years ago. In March, Dallas-based investment firm Riata Capital Group acquired Eyetique. Shortly after, Mr. Childs announced his retirement. Nevertheless, these stores remain committed to offering a range of high-quality eyewear and personalized customer service. Its clever ad campaigns featuring local celebrities aren’t going anywhere, either.

DOG DAY AFTERNOON Debbie’s huskies love their close-up

Two beautiful, blue-eyed Siberian huskies sit regally in shiny new cars, setting the television commercials of Day Automotive apart from the dog-less ads of other car dealerships.

The dogs’ thick, fluffy coats are perfectly groomed.

They are enviably well-behaved, looking directly into the camera as Debbie Numrich Campbell promises: “We’ll not only make your day, we’ll make your deal!”

They are not professional canine actors. They are Mrs. Campbell’s pets.

The commercials are usually shot indoors in a dealership showroom. But in mid-April, cast and crew decide to shoot outdoors on a sunny spring day at Squaw Valley Park in O’Hara.

As the owner of the Day Automotive Group, Mrs. Campbell could choose any car. On this day, she pulls into the park in a bright yellow Chevrolet Camaro.

Members of the crew from 321 Blink and RJW Media smile as a black-and-white nose pokes out of a rear window. That’s Marco, who jumps out of the car on leash with Mrs. Campbell. Millie is close behind.

The huskies wag their long, furry tails as they survey action in the park — people walking dogs and

pushing babies in strollers. They seem to find the background activity much more interesting than shooting a TV commercial.

Mrs. Campbell sits down on a stone wall in front of a fishing pond. Her soft command to “sit” gets an instant response from Millie, who complies and looks expectantly at the man with the camera. But Marco is still looking at the other dogs.

Then he begins vocalizing. He isn’t barking or howling; he’s making the distinctive sound that lovers of Siberian huskies call “singing.”

“He never does that at home,” Mrs. Campbell says with a chuckle. “Marco!”

He responds to his name, making eye contact with his mistress as he continues to sing.

“Marco!” says Tim McLaughlin, 321 Blink’s president and supervisor of the shoot. “Look how good Millie is!”

Marco looks at Mr. McLaughlin as Mrs. Campbell says: “At Day Automotive, we really do make car buying quick, easy and fun.” Then she does it again, and again, with the polished precision of someone who has been making commercials for seven years.

Millie, 7, is also calm, cool and professional. She has been making commercials since she was a puppy. Marco,

whose first birthday was May 11, is not as polished. He alternates between following Millie’s lead and jiggling his leash as he watches the park activity.

Television viewers won’t see those shots. They will see later ones in which Marco hits his spots and doesn’t speak (or sing). The crew and Mrs. Campbell are calm and patient throughout the one-hour shoot. There are no harsh words

or corrections, and no food treats or bribes. Crew members often pet Millie and Marco, and Marco licks the faces of his admirers.

“Marco is a kisser,” Mrs. Campbell says.

When she watches the footage later, she says, “Oh that’s perfect! They are so good!”

For years, Maxwell was the black-and-white husky in the Day Automotive commercials. Despite valiant veterinary efforts, he died May 10, 2016, of cancer.

He was only 4 years old.

Somewhat eerily, Marco was born the next day.

Mrs. Campbell named him for Marco Island, Fla., the site of her 2015 wedding to Jim Campbell. They live in Fox Chapel.

She is a lifelong dog lover, having grown up with Irish setters, an Airedale and a Chihuahua. Her father, William E. Numrich, bought his first auto dealership in the late 1970s. Before he died in 2010 and made her the owner, Day Automotive had grown to become one of the largest dealerships in the region.

Mrs. Campbell has also owned Doberman pinschers. Juliette, a 14-year-old miniature pinscher, has appeared with the huskies in some commercials.

So has Matisse, a miniature Australian shepherd Mrs. Campbell pet-sits for one of her three grown children.

A board member of Animal Friends for three years, Mrs. Campdell presented $21,000 in checks in April to the Ohio Township shelter from Subaru of America’s Share the Love Event. The fundraiser, which ran in November and December at two Day dealerships, was about more than money. Animal Friends’ mobile unit brought dogs, cats and rabbits into Day Apollo Subaru in Moon, said William J. Eggert, its general manager. Employees and customers enjoyed the animals and several were adopted. Customers are always welcome to bring their dogs to the dealerships while they browse, he said.

Cars and dogs have proved to be a winning combination for Day Automotive, but the commercial that won Mrs. Campbell an award didn’t feature dogs. In 2015, she was a Bronze winner in the national Telly Awards competition for a Day Chevrolet/Centennial Chevrolet commercial promoting breast cancer awareness.

“After the loss of my dear, lifelong friend Juan Fencel to this awful disease, I have become even more dedicated to do whatever I can to promote breast cancer awareness,” she said.

BY SARA BAUKNECHT Pittsburgh Post-Gazette After graduating from college in 2014 with a degree in business management, KC Kaluhiokalani of Franklin Park started looking for work. But she found her true passion — trendy activewear — in between the job searches and interviews.

“I was working out every day and always in activewear,” she says. “I saw the need for more fashion-forward activewear that didn’t necessarily scream, ‘I just worked out.’”

Last year, she launched urbanfitco, an e-commerce site that curates functional and fashionable active apparel by brands smaller than fitness gear giants lululemon and Under Armor, with an emphasis on U.S. makers. Its success, along with strong support at local pop-up shop events, encouraged her to expand the business to brick-and-mortar. The flagship store opened in March at 412 Beaver St. in Sewickley.

The shop is a “one-stop shop for every woman,” Ms. Kaluhiokalani says. It stocks items for high- and low-impact workouts, along with compression pieces, lots of leggings, graphic tanks, tees and outerwear in prints and colors. (Average leggings go for $88-$90 and tanks tend to run about $40.) Switch up a look from the gym to on the go with bracelets, hats and bags.

To cater to a range of women, urbanfitco features everyday people in its promotional shoots, tries to avoid retouching photos and carries sizes XS through XL.

“We didn’t want someone to look at something and say, ‘That’s really cute, but I could never fit that.’ We just wanted to be real and authentic,” Ms. Kaluhiokalani says.

The business has evolved into a family affair, with her younger sister, Kate, serving as co-owner and chief branding officer and her mom, Kathy, pitching in, too. Ms. Kaluhiokalani credits her dad with helping her solidify her business plan. Looking ahead, that plan has some big goals: design urbanfitco’s own activewear line and open a second Pittsburgh location.

“We’re just really kind of diving into learning everything that we can and soaking up all of that knowledge,” she says. “It’s definitely a process.”

LUNA BY GLITTER & GRIT Glitter & Grit in Lawrenceville has become synonymous with modern, boho-chic and relaxed wedding gowns. But owner Erin Szymanski didn’t want to leave out women who want something a little more glamorous, are on a budget or need a gown at the last minute.

Her solution is Luna, a sister store to Glitter & Grit slated to open in late summer at 616 Beaver St. in Sewickley. It will specialize in gowns that are a little glitzier than those at G&G (including Limor Rosen, Yolan Cris, Unbridaled by Dan Jones and Tara la Tour) as well as evening wear for a cocktail party or wedding ceremony. Some of the occasion lines will be Halston Heritage, Yumi Kim, AQ/AQ, Keepsake and Lavish Alice. Unlike Glitter & Grit, which is by appointment only, Luna will have regular store hours and the option to schedule a private appointment.

The shop’s location and name have personal meaning for Ms. Szymanski, who started her retail career in Sewickley. Luna is a reference to the moon; she remembers gazing at the night sky while trying to maintain a long-distance relationship with the man who is now her husband.

“There is such a sort of strength and power in the moon,” she says. “Luna will be for the woman who wants to shine brighter.”

Inspired by a website featuring handmade goods, Ms. Corry was working for a stylist and designer in Manhattan when she started Lex & Lynne. The name is a nod to her own (Lex being short for Alexis) and her sister, mom and aunt — all of whom share the name Lynne.

Even more change is on the horizon. This summer, Ms. Corry will open a private bridal salon on the second floor of the women’s storefront. In addition to wedding gowns, it will showcase resort and evening wear and fashions for bridesmaids, flower girls and mothers of the bride. Shopping for her own wedding motivated her to introduce bridal to Lex & Lynne’s inventory.

“I had a really hard time. I looked everywhere. I went to New York City, and I still couldn’t find anything,” she says.

A friend in Los Angeles ended up designing a gown for her.

“I felt we could really offer something in the Pittsburgh area that wasn’t here.”

Expect gowns from Ghost of London, Bo and Luca, Temperley, and some U.S. designers. There will be dresses done in linens, cottons and velvets; some can be purchased and taken home that day. One-on-one attention and personal styling tips are always part of the experience, Ms. Corry says.

“Sewickley has been very good to us. I do feel like we have a really good presence here,” she says. “We’re growing and anyone can come in and get something, or they can get everything that they’re looking for.”

THE SWEET SPOT French, Italian cuisine seasons Sewickley in summer

That hardly seems like a compliment, much less the kind of place that you’d want to eat out in, but if the Wikipedia page devoted to Sewickley is to be believed, that was the community’s first name.

Just far enough outside the city to not quite be a typical suburb, Sewickley has always had the feel of an upwardly mobile Mayberry. In such stately places, the dining options are often borderline stodgy — good but conservative and not necessarily adventurous.

But a pair of young gun chefs and a wily old ranger lead a small but deep dining scene that should be the envy of any bedroom community. Considering the restaurants’ location, it appears they named Sewickley for the wrong mammal.

Bruneaux and Cocothe As classic French cuisine surges nationwide, Sewickley is ahead of the curve, with dueling French spots just a short walk from each other on Beaver Street.

The restaurant industry is a notorious back-breaker, littered with as many broken dreams as Hollywood Boulevard. So chef David DeVoss of Cocothe and Patrick Kederka of Bruneaux are the kinds of guys it’s easy to root for.

Mr. DeVoss started his culinary career as a kitchen grunt in his hometown of State College, working at Spats Speakeasy. He’d work his way to become the head man at the town-and-gown institution before moving to Pittsburgh, where he enhanced his knowledge at the LeMont and Hyeholde restaurants.

Owner Courtney Yates opened Cocothe in 2012 first as a highend chocolate-and-tea boutique and gradually transitioned it into full-scale food service, and Mr. DeVoss was brought on board.

serving in the Marine Corps for two tours in Iraq right out of high school. His battalion was among the first to cross into Iraq from the southern Kuwaiti border and saw combat in the Battle of Nasiriyah, a crucial early fight in the campaign.

The 34-year-old, first-generation American with parents from Canada and the Czech Republic found cooking as a second career after the military. He trained at the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute and worked in Asheville, N.C. at the prestigious Biltmore Estate and then for acclaimed chef Katie Button at Curate.

A culinary school instructor connected him with legendary Pittsburgh dining and nightlife impresario Robin Fernandez. They opened Mambo Italia in Sewickley in 2014. Two years later, Bruneaux revealed a dramatic transformation of the longtime Sewickley Cafe space.

Mr. Kaderka’s right forearm bears a tattoo of a beribboned chef’s knife and an ethos that combines his current and former trades: “Death Before Well Done.” He shows it in a 32-ounce Tomahawk steak served with a beef demi glacé or a 6-ounce Filet Au Poivre with a side of petite squashes, pommes aligot and au poivre.

Since it opened in 1975, Sweetwater Center for the Arts has been evolving to meet the needs of its members and community. Now it’s poised to take a giant step into the future, with classes ranging from painting and ceramics to writing and acting, music, and even cooking and nutrition.

“During the last couple of years, we’ve been pretty quietly developing new ideas, and we’re ready to take some risks and sort of shout it from the rooftops and let people know what’s going on out here,” said executive director Nichole Remmert.

“We’re very intentionally developing a path forward for the next 42 years that supports innovative and relevant arts and cultural programming in a safe and welcoming environment.

We want to have something here for literally every person, from a 3-year-old to a 99-year-old taking a first improvisation or oil painting class, from a beginner to the longtime, very skilled artist.

“Inclusion has to be intentional. It doesn’t just happen,” she said.

Sweetwater, which has been in a century-old former post office since 1988, offers classes year-round, and enrollment last year was 1,700. Approximately half of the students live in Sewickley or nearby areas; others come from Cranberry, Moon,

Coraopolis and Beaver County. Last summer, a family from Conneaut Lake stayed in a local hotel for a week so their son could attend art camp, Ms. Remmert said.

Culinary classes, which range from Indian food to home brewing, increased in 2012 when the kitchen was renovated. In addition to children and teen classes, there are culinary-focused summer camps. Food preparation is also the focus of a partnership with Class Academy of Baden, an alternative school.

“They’re learning nutritional fundamentals — how to feed themselves, basic cooking skills, making choices at the grocery store. Those are also potential job skills,” Ms. Remmert said.

“We’d like to grow that program, to get funding and a van so we can take them from farm to kitchen.”

Each year, about six art exhibitions feature regional and national artists. The current exhibition, “Turning Red,” was inspired by Pennsylvania voting Republican in a presidential election for the first time in 28 years. Artists who live in the state were invited to submit work to the juried show, and all political viewpoints were welcome.

“We’re excited to do a show like this,” said artistic coordinator Alexandra Watrous. “We want to stay relevant by offering a platform for artists to show these works, but we don’t necessarily want to push ideas on anybody.”

Last month’s “Thrown & Altered,” an exhibition of

contemporary clay work, was designed to focus community interest on the center’s ceramics program, she said.

In 2014, Sweetwater began purchasing artworks from the exhibitions for its collection. Artists and collectors began donating art, mostly paintings and drawings, to the center a decade ago.

“As we move forward, we’d like to continue that and also add contemporary works and abstraction,” Ms. Watrous said.

One of the center’s most popular events is the MAVUNO Festival of African American Art and Culture, encompassing music, visual arts, poetry, storytelling and literature.

The 21st annual event will be held in the fall.

Elizabeth (Betty) Asche Douglas, an artist, educator and songstress, was a festival founder and lecturer at last year’s event. She said the idea began with Joan James, the first African-American teacher at Sewickley Academy, who established its Black History program. Mrs. Asche Douglas was a visiting artist for the academy and also on the Sweetwater board.

“Sewickley had been a playground of wealthy Pittsburghers, who all had black servants,” Mrs. Asche Douglas said.

“Relationships between the races were old school.”

In the mid-1990s, some people from Sewickley Academy, Sweetwater and other institutions met to discuss ways to increase racial awareness.

“We wanted a special emphasis on African and African-American creativity. And we all agreed it would not be held during Black History Month,” Mrs. Asche Douglas said.

She was teaching at Geneva College then, and one of her students was from Africa. He told her class about a harvest festival named Mavuno, which gave the festival its name.

“It was such a big success that it continued,” she said.

Ms. Remmert, 42, grew up in Moon and has lived in other states, Europe and the Washington, D.C., area. With a background in fundraising and development, she did some marketing and development work at Sweetwater after she returned to the area five years ago for family reasons.

She was appointed executive director more than a year ago.

Sweetwater employs three full-time and five part-time staff members. The 2017 budget is $660,000, and approximately 63 percent of its revenue comes from classes. The rest is from government grants, foundations, donations and memberships. The center awards $10,000 in full or partial scholarships annually.

“We never say no so long as they demonstrate need,” Ms. Remmert said.

The 20th century was young and so was William Penn Snyder Jr., the dashing son of a Pittsburgh industrialist, when he met Marie Elise Whitney on the Narragansett ferry. He was driving a luxurious Simplex automobile and so was the attractive New Orleans debutante whose family founded the Whitney Bank.

Before the ferry docked, “she challenged him to a race and she beat him,” said Verna Corey, the chatelaine of Wilpen Hall, a mansion where the couple’s portraits hang side by side.

Fierce competition became ardent courtship and they married in 1917.

A century later, Wilpen Hall is the only remaining Gilded Age estate in Sewickley Heights with an intact manor house and outbuildings that have been continuously owned by the family that commissioned it.

A summer home designed by architect George Orth, the Shingle style manor house boasts 23,000 square feet of luxury, a winding driveway shaded by an allee of trees, formal gardens bursting with hydrangeas, lilacs and peonies, 100-year-old wisteria vines that reach the roof and four outdoor terraces that step down a hillside.

“The house was built strictly for entertaining,” said Ms. Corey, who grew up in Squirrel Hill. Her father was the dean of Carnegie Tech’s printing management program and her mother was

an amateur painter.

In her previous life, Ms. Corey was a public health professional interested in improving health care for the poor. In 1981, she earned a doctorate in public health from the University of Pittsburgh. From the mid 1980s to 2005, she taught communication skills to young doctors at Mercy Hospital. She was vice president of research and development for Automated Health Services Inc. in McCandless from 1982 to 2007, the year she married William Penn Snyder III. While beginning the restoration of the mansion and its gardens, they sailed around the world, visiting China, the island of Guernsey, Iceland, New Zealand, Oman and Tasmania. They hired an architectural historian, who wrote a 22-page nomination so the property could be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a distinction it earned in 2011.

Ms. Corey’s husband, who died at age 96 in 2015, was a leader in Pittsburgh’s first renaissance. His grandfather, William Penn Snyder Sr., built Wilpen Hall and the family fortune by founding Shenango Furnace and Shenango Steamship Co. Since losing her husband two years ago, Ms. Corey has worked to fulfill his vision of restoring the home, its landscape and outbuildings.

She is aided by estate manager Martin Maines, who arrived in 2012. He grew up in Carrick and spent 25 years working as a self-employed carpenter on residential, commercial and restoration projects.

One by one, family portraits are being cleaned. The great room overlooks a sunken billiard room with a snuggery.

Off the great room is a small blue-and-white morning room, a cheerful space that overlooks the side yard. Display cabinets hold French Quimper pottery.

Two parallel staircases lead to the second floor, where a porch overlooks the first terrace, which has a fountain. On opposite ends of this first terrace are white wrought-iron benches from the family’s New Orleans branch. For her late husband’s 90th birthday, Ms. Corey had the benches restored and painted a crisp white.

On the second floor, there are eight bedrooms and six bathrooms. Every bedroom has at least one chaise longue.

“Women of the Gilded Age fainted because their bodies were often laced into tight corsets. They were called fainting couches,” Ms. Corey said.

On the third floor are nine small bedrooms once occupied by live-in staff plus a storage room. When Ms. Corey needed a new headboard for a bed in a guest room, she recycled part of an elaborate grill from an orchestrion. Massive musical machines designed to sound like an entire orchestra, orchestrions were often

made in Germany and popular in the 19th century. Wilpen Hall’s orchestrion was removed around 1932, according to the National Register nomination.

The late Mr. Snyder’s dressing room is intact, right down to his silver dresser set.

A white, second-floor bathroom is decorated with pictures of President Theodore Roosevelt. On the wall is a framed letter he wrote in 1918 to Mary Cuddy Black Snyder, praising her for selling more than $7 million worth of Liberty bonds.

Back on the first floor in the butler’s pantry are leather-bound scrapbooks filled with black-and-white images of Wilpen Hall from its earliest days. They are especially helpful in restoration efforts.

An enthusiastic baker who favors King Arthur flour, Ms. Corey is at home here. She makes shortbread cookies dipped in chocolate or her mother’s prize-winning coffee cake. She misses the 4 o’clock teas when her late husband and Mr. Maines discussed restoration over homemade treats.

“Marty has found all kinds of treasures in the basement and on the third floor. Many of them were things that Bill knew were there but hadn’t seen for decades,” she said.

Unlike the White House’s Lincoln bedroom, a large donation won’t get you an overnight stay at Fallingwater or Kentuck Knob. But after a day touring the two iconic properties designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, you can lay your head in a Wright place at nearby Nemacolin Woodlands.

To commemorate the architect’s 150th birthday in June, the resort is offering a package that includes tours of both house museums plus a stay at Falling Rock, its boutique hotel designed by David Merritt. The Taliesin student conceived 42 rooms featuring built-in furniture, horizontal lines and earth tones that are reminiscent of the master’s organic modern style.

(see story on Page 45). But none will pamper participants like those who stay at Falling Rock. Of all the accommodations at Nemacolin, this is the Wright choice. Each room comes with a butler who will draw your bath, plump your pillow, unpack your luggage and bring you fresh-baked cookies before bed.

Joe Hardy and his daughter, Maggie Hardy Magerko, marked the milestone birthday by commissioning a book, “Wright Perspectives: Falling Rock and Frank Lloyd Wright in the Laurel Highlands.” The book delves into the construction of the hotel and includes interviews with Bernadine Hagan, the original owner of Kentuck Knob, and Lynda Waggoner, director of Fallingwater and vice president of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

What began as the need for a state-of-theart clubhouse for a golf tournament in 2003 turned into the highest form of flattery for one of America’s best-known architects. From the hotel’s perch, three states are visible on clear day. The architect’s love of nature is reflected in everything from lamp shades to an outdoor infinity pool.

After a steak at the hotel’s Aqueous restaurant, feast your eyes on Fallingwater, the home built over Bear Creek for department store mogul Edgar Kaufmann in 1936. Ms. Waggoner said its architecture is only one of its unique elements.

“Fallingwater is like a modern version of a Victorian house,” she said, noting the house’s separate quarters for household help set into the hillside just above the main residence.

“The idea of a home with servants was beginning to disappear around this time.”

Many architectural historians single out Fallingwater as the best of the architect’s 500 built works for the way the home cantilevers over the stream and seems to rise organically out of the landscape. Thousands of visitors come each year to marvel as they walk through its rooms, admiring its original artwork and fixtures. The gift shop is filled with books and home decor, some from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

is now owned by Lord Peter Palumbo but was built in 1956 for Bernadine and I.N. Hagan, president of Hagan Ice Cream Co. The Hagans were friends of the Kaufmanns and loved Fallingwater so much that they asked Wright to create a house for them in the Laurel Highlands.

He designed a Usonian home on a hexagonal grid that faces east. Visitors can still walk out to take in the expanse of the Youghiogheny River gorge.

“Mr. Wright set it back from the bluff because he believed the Hagans would start to take the view for granted,” said a Kentuck Knob tour guide.

The grounds are sprinkled with sculptures and the living room includes a long built-in seating area, a common Wright element. Just as at Fallingwater, all the stone was locally quarried. Wright chose red cypress for the woodwork because it is resistant to rot.

“The red cypress dentil molding all along the house was carved by hand by just two local artisans,” the guide said.

A water feature under the windows near the master bedroom was added by the Hagans.

“She liked the sound of water,” said the guide.

Summer is a great time to visit a brewery or three, especially with so many new ones bubbling up around the region. â&#x20AC;&#x153;West of the city is starting to spontaneously ferment with new breweries. Love it,â&#x20AC;? tweeted the folks at the yet-to-open Abjuration Brewing Co. after seeing a story about the new 412 Brewery in McKees Rocks.

You can check out several new operations serving a variety of seasonal beers by following all or part of our Ohio River beer trail from Pittsburgh to Beaver County.

First up, if you’re starting from Downtown: 412 Brewery doesn’t have a taproom, so this is a sip instead of a stop. The production brewery started making beer in February in a garage behind a former pizza place on Island Avenue by the McKees Rocks Bridge. You can’t buy one here but you can find draft and bottles at Carmody’s Grille in a former hotel on nearby Neville Island. In a nod to its location on the Ohio River, the session India pale ale — under 5 percent alcohol — is named Boats ’n’ Hops.

A beer to toast the place? The Doubleback Amber Bock, brewed with lager yeast but at ale temperatures for what he says is a unique and lessthan-5-percent alcohol summer sip.

This wheat beer is often cloudy with yeast, which gives it distinctive banana and clove flavors “with a dry and tart edge” — not bitter or highly alcoholic.

other fruit. The Hollywood, which was Mr. Elia’s dad’s for 50 years, has been impeccably remodeled. But in the sleek, dark interior, it’s easy to feel like you’ve gone back to the days of the Rat Pack.

The food menu is modern and excellent, and in addition to a dozen beers on tap, there are lots of other brews to choose from. They regularly offer live music, but as the menu notes: “We do not have televisions. We are the original social media. If you cannot hold a conversation with another person, we are probably not your kind of bar.” There are TVs and shuffleboard and darts, as well as wine and cocktails in Roots Rochester, the cozy nightspot that opened in May downstairs.

Dan Woodske moved Beaver Brewing Co. into this Beaver Falls storefront in 2013. His nanobrewery is planning some unusual early summer treats, including fan favorite Watermelon Wheat. “We add 75 pounds of real watermelon for every 45 gallons of the beer we make,” he explains. “Also use Huell melon hops from Germany that have a really unique cucumber flavor to them — pairs perfectly together.”

Barrel-aged brews including a farmhouse ale that’s aged in a Cabernet Sauvignon barrel and is brewed with Jarrylo hops “that yield a really crazy pear flavor and aroma.” His homey brewpub also serves simple food as well as cider and Pennsylvania wine and spirits. Thanks to recent loosening of the liquor laws, his brews are also served at Waffles INCaffeinated in Beaver, which is otherwise a “dry” town.

Mr. Woodske says he gets noticeable numbers of beer tourists from Pittsburgh and other places in the summertime. He always recommends visitors also stop at his two Beaver County neighbors.

“They’re all very different places, very different vibes and very different experiences. You’re bound to find one you like.”

LEEPER, Pa. — The country estate Jack and Janice Fuellhart built in this tiny hamlet (population: 158) is the stuff a rider (or farmer) dreams of.

Nestled on 75 acres on the outskirts of Cook Forest State Park, the 5,000-square-foot private retreat boasts five outbuildings, including two picturesque barns.

One barn, built into a hillside in the 1860s, was transformed into a luxurious three-bedroom home in the 1990s. The other was built in 1991 and customized to include an elevator to a three-bedroom apartment overlooking 50 acres of pasture. The barn houses up to eight horses in high style with rubber-matted stalls, hot and cold water, and a heated tack room for riders.

Crown Farms was the perfect place to raise a family that liked the outdoors and found joy on horseback. So the decision to downsize, after a quarter-century of living there, was a difficult one.

“We loved it,” says Mrs. Fuellhart. “But this is a lot to take care of, and I don’t want to begin to hate it.”

When the Fuellharts purchased the Clarion County property in 1984 from the Haggerty family, it came with a Civil War-era farmhouse and lots of history: Robert Haggerty and his wife, Rebecca Easly, were some of the earlier settlers to arrive in Farmington Township in 1831, when local streams danced with trout and wild panthers roamed the woods with wild turkeys and other game.

After the original house was destroyed by a fire in 1986, the couple built and lived in a cottage on site while they contemplated whether to stay. Then they came up with a novel plan — transform the four-stall bank barn that held their daughter’s horses into upscale living quarters.

“We just always liked the old beams and the look of the barn,” Mrs. Fuellhart says.

Converting a horse barn to house was still fairly unusual at the time, especially in a town as rural as Leeper. But the barn’s rustic beams and soaring spaces were so alluring.

“Our architect kept saying we couldn’t do it,” she recalls.

So they designed the two-story home themselves, using as many local craftspeople and products as possible. The key was finding people who knew how to work with wood and would maintain the barn’s integrity. The family also wanted modern

amenities such as a gourmet kitchen, master spa and an inground swimming pool with a pool house for guests.

One big job involved busting up brick and manure-stained dirt floors with a jackhammer to make way for Pennsylvania bluestone with radiant heat. He also had to figure out how to support the building in a way that matched the barn’s rustic aesthetic.

(He faced a steel pipe running the length of the first floor with reclaimed barnwood.)

The living room’s most striking features are its stone halfwalls and hand-hewn beams and posts with ax marks. Under the windows in the dining room are the remnants of a manger that held hay for the horses.

Dave Kahle of Kahle’s Kitchens created the gourmet kitchen.

Designed for the serious cook, it features commercial-grade Viking double ovens, a six-burner Jenn-Air stove, two Sub-Zero refrigerators and a grill top. White Corian countertops complement the hickory cabinets with glass fronts and plate racks. Mr. Kahle also crafted the home’s solid French mahogany doors.

man Tim Buxton created the floor-to-ceiling woodwork and a stairwell using hand-hewn barn beams.

Just around the corner, in what was once a groom’s quarters, lies a billiards room graced with a 25-foot paneled ceiling and a spiral staircase leading to a loft bedroom. Two large arched windows flood the room with light. A former grain room under the loft has been converted into a full bathroom.

The second level also holds a spacious master bedroom overlooking the backyard patio. Pocket doors lead to a mirrored exercise room. A master spa holds both a soaking tub with views of the horse pastures and stairs leading to a sauna.

A three-bedroom guest house with two full baths has a solarium, an open deck and a covered back porch that stretches the entire length of the house and overlooks the 20by-40-foot pool. A one-bedroom, one-bath pool house brings the total number of bedrooms on the complex to 10.

Twenty-five of the farm’s 75 acres have been cleared, and much of it is fenced. For a time, the owners raised thoroughbred horses on the farm. They also introduced a new breed of cattle to the area, the Scottish Highlander, and for a time marketed the low-fat meat through the mail as Crown Farms Estate Beef.

“When you come to the farm and drive through the gates, you’re in another world,” says Ms. Shetler-Libent. “It’s a Disneyland for adults.”

SMITTEN A love letter to the biggest Volvo SUV, the 2017 Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription

BY SCOTT STURGIS Price: Hoo-boy, $88,855 as tested. (The trim level starts at $69,900. More about options later.)

Marketer’s pitch: “Most awarded luxury SUV of the century.”

Conventional wisdom: Edmunds.com liked its elegant styling and spacious second and third row seats, but not its overly busy ride quality or that it was short on performance and economy.

Reality: Pricey, but it could be worth it.

Long admiration: I’ve gazed longingly at Volvos since they were a boxy ’80s yuppie car everyone loved

to hate. I think it goes back to when my oldest sister’s brilliant-and-drop-dead-gorgeous college roommate and brilliant-and-drop-dead-gorgeous younger sister rode up to our house in their brilliant German professor dad’s white Volvo wagon.

Ahem. Perhaps my heart has meshed a couple different emotions here.

In the six years I’ve been writing about cars, I’ve tested some Volvos I’ve liked and some not so much.

But I probably acted like a preteen boy gazing at his sister’s college roommate when I begged Volvo to let me sample the XC90.

What it is: The XC90 was redesigned for the 2016 model, and carries over with a few revisions in this one. It has garnered a slew of awards for design and function, including Motor Trend’s SUV of the year. (Beware the far-cheaper T5 model; it features a different engine and only two rows of seats.)

The Volvoest: I groggily hopped into the XC90 on a chilly February morning, never having had a chance to talk to the fleet driver who dropped it off. I quickly found myself falling for the biggest of Volvo SUVs for real.

Pretty inside: The linear walnut trim, the Nappa brown leather interior, the cup holder hidden beneath a long slideaway door and the iPad-looking infotainment center all added up to the prettiest passenger compartment I’ve seen in a long while. (Most of these features are part of the $3,500 Inscription package price.)

Start me up: Not satisfied with a start button, Volvo offers a silver knob that drivers twist to ignite the cylinders. Nice touch.

Shifty: The shift lever looks like it’s made of crystal. There’s no shift capability in the hybrid version I tested, but getting into gear is easy enough. The eight-speed automatic transmission operated smoothly and without intrusion.

Awesome infotainment: I love shiny bright lights and sleek smooth surfaces as much as the next guy, but from the first glimpse of the XC90 Sensus Connect interface at the Philadelphia Auto Show, I suspected a real breakthrough.

The 9-inch touch screen is the closest to an iPad or other tablet I’ve seen in a car so far. The main screen is divided into four clearly marked sections for navigation, stereo, phone and sound controls.

Once you’re inside one of those sections, three dots on top tell you if you are on the left-most screen, the middle or the right, just like a phone or tablet. Swipe left or right for more detailed adjustments. Though it takes some getting used to, it’s the easiest completely touch-screen system I’ve encountered.

Up to speed: A little silver roller tube controls the drive

mode, from all-wheel drive to pure electric, hybrid, power and off-road. (If you’re taking your $88,000 Volvo off-road, well, aren’t you special.) The 2.0-liter supercharged turbo engine engine creates 316 horsepower; the electric motor takes total power up to 400 horses.

Power mode gets to 60 mph in a hurry (5.3 seconds, according to Car and Driver). Hybrid mode can be a little balky and slow, though.

Top-notch sound: After settling into a cruising pattern, I had some time to enjoy the music. The presets include “studio,” “stage” and “Gothenburg Concert Hall,” and all three live up to their names. Other vehicles attempt concert hall effects, but the Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system ($2,500) really comes through.

On the road: The large crossover feels like it’s going to fall over on winding country roads while in hybrid mode, but power mode is far more forgiving. It’s no BMW X5 or Lexus F-Sport crossover, but the XC90 holds its own.

The XC90 really shines for parking. Getting around other cars while turning around in the tight Sturgis family driveway was easier in this large crossover than in most.

Friends and stuff: Three-row SUVs remain no match for minivans for sheer spaciousness. With Sturgis Kids 1.0 through 4.0 all pretty much grown now, we’ve needed actual adult room for quite a while. Second-row passengers enjoy heated seats (part of the $1,950 climate package, which also heated the steering wheel, the windshield washer nozzles and added headup display).

I wasn’t expecting much from the XC90, but I was pleasantly surprised. The third-row seat sits on a raised floor, so legroom is

OK. The middle row moves fore and aft so reasonably, accommodations could be made for 5-foot-10-inch Mr. Driver’s Seat in all three rows. Head room is a bit of a squeeze but still not bad.

Night shift: The headlights illuminate the roadway impeccably, and the optional turning feature adds to the delight. Like many features, it can be simply turned off through the touch screen.

Fuel economy: I averaged 23 mpg in my usual realm of exurbs and highways. Premium fuel recommended but not required.

Where it’s built: Gothenburg, Sweden How it’s built: And the love affair sours. The Volvo XC90 gets the lowest rating from Consumer Reports for reliability. Major components look good, but audio system and body integrity are the low points.

In the end: I just rationalized the low reliability score, something I usually don’t do. If the reliability stresses you out, enjoy the massage in the front seats (part of the $2,900 luxury package, which includes leather door handles and sun visor and Nubuck pillars).

The XC90 certainly offers a luxurious package.

Let’s get one thing straight: Joe Negri is no handyman.

“Fred said, ‘Joe, how would you like to be Handyman Negri?’”

“I said, ‘You gotta be kidding. I can’t hammer a nail straight!’”

“He said, ‘That’s OK. It’s all pretend.’”

For 35 years, Mr. Negri appeared on “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” as Handyman Negri. Just as Fred Rogers had said, his lack of repair skills never hampered him in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. But his jazzy guitar licks cer-

tainly came in handy when he played with guests Wynton Marsalis, Mabel Mercer, Tony Bennett and Yo-Yo Ma and with the rest of the TV show’s quartet — musical director Johnny Costa on piano, Carl McVicker Jr. on bass and Bobby Rawsthorne on drums.

Mr. Negri says his father, Michael, was the real handyman. The union bricklayer immigrated from the Calabria region at age 16 to escape induction into the Italian army.

“He wanted to escape war but he ended up in the U.S. Army,” said his eldest son.

When Michael Negri returned to the family home on Mount Washington, he took up his mason’s trowel and his fascination with American music, especially Dixieland.

“They called him Banjo Mike,” Mr. Negri recalls in an interview in his home in Scott.

Yet the instrument Banjo Mike handed his 3-year-old son was a ukelele. “I was a singer. Dad gave me the uke so I wouldn’t need anyone else to rehearse.”

At age 4, he performed on KDKA-AM’s “Uncle Henry’s Radio Rascals” radio program. Never shy on stage, the boy took his cues from Jackie Cooper, Shirley Temple and other child stars he saw on the silver screen. Only they weren’t entertaining at Sons of Italy lodges and other ethnic clubs.

His mother and aunt — the former Rose and Rene Viggiano of

Italy’s Basilicata region — taught him the words of “Pardon Me Pretty Baby,” “My Ideal” and other songs they heard on the radio.

His father helped with the music and gave him a small Epiphone guitar when he was 6.

“It was a jazz box, not a folk singer’s guitar,” he says proudly.

He and his 4-year-old brother, Bobby, took dance lessons together in Downtown at the Lou Bolton Studio. “Dad did work at the studio so we could take lessons,” Mr. Negri says.

Banjo Mike drove his sons, then known as the Rhythm Boys, to compete in talent contests at the Enright and other Pittsburgh theaters. With their cousin Harold “Mutsy” Amato, they sometimes won first prize: $25. Afterward, their father treated them to hamburgers at The Brass Rail restaurant. As a teen, he took lessons for five years with Vic Lawrence at Volkwein’s on Liberty Avenue, Downtown. A family friend gave him records by Charlie Christian, Les Paul and George Barnes. Christian’s electric guitar was a major influence, Mr. Negri says. “He gave guitar a voice.”

He was entering his junior year at South Hills High School when a famous bandleader came to dinner. Shep Fields asked Joe’s parents to take the 16-year-old guitarist on the road with his 15-piece band.

He performed in Chicago and at The Strand in New York, returning home to play the Stanley Theatre in Downtown in March 1944.

The Post-Gazette’s Harold V. Cohen said: “Young Joe Negri, a

Mr. Negri turned 18 in the summer of 1944 and was drafted into the Army.

While stationed in Germany, he and another soldier were given a three-day pass to Eupen, Belgium, and went to a nightclub one night. “A guy was playing acoustic guitar and I sat in.”

An American lieutenant heard him play and approached him afterward. “He said, ‘How would you like to join the Special Services?’ I said, ‘Would I!’” Mr. Negri joined the 13th Special Services in January 1945. “By May I’m coming home,” Mr. Negri says. “I think someone is praying for Joe.” He spent several months stationed near Newark, N.J., and returned to Pittsburgh in 1946. He formed the Joe Negri Trio with his brother on piano and John Vance on bass. The trio became the de facto house band at two clubs: the Carnival Lounge on Penn Avenue and the Midway on Liberty Avenue. They also backed up national headliners who came through town, including saxophonist Ben Webster and trumpeters Charlie Shavers and Roy Eldridge, a North Side native.

In 1950, Mr. Negri met Johnny Costa, who suggested the high school dropout join him studying music composition at Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie Mellon University. He got his diploma at Allderdice High School and enrolled under the GI Bill. His composition teacher was Nikolai Lopatnikoff, a Russian-born composer.

“He told me to write something for piano and violin. I did and he

said, ‘You have a wonderful way with melody,’” Mr. Negri recalls.

He found one in a new medium — television. He became the leader of a jazz trio that played live five days a week on KDKA’s “Buzz ‘n’ Bill Show” with song and dance men Buzz Aston and Bill Hinds.

The Negris moved to Brookline and had three daughters: Lisa, Laurie and later, Gia. In 1959, guitarist Tony Mottola convinced him to move his young family to New York City.

“He said, ‘You can sub with some bands.’ It was all very iffy,” Mr. Negri says. “After a few months, Joni and I said, ‘Let’s go back to Pittsburgh.’”

In addition to writing commercial jingles, he teamed up with writer Sy Bloom on the song “Beat ‘Em Bucs,” which played the Pirates all the way to a 1960 World Series victory over the New York Yankees.

He worked on another KDKA-TV program, “The John Reed King Show,” and moved over to WTAE-TV in 1968. In the mid-’60s, Mr. Negri worked on a short-lived children’s show with Fred Rogers. * JOE NEGRI AND FRIENDS

When the Latrobe native created “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” for WQED years later, he remembered Mr. Negri.

Rogers, a music composition major at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., wrote many of the songs he sung on the show, and he loved jazz. The quartet tucked swinging riffs into every show. Thanks to them, generations of children unconsciously absorbed a little soul with their public television.

Mr. Negri continued to play local clubs and accompany headliners who came through town. Bob Hope, Peggy Lee and Michael Feinstein all became Joe Negri fans.

In the 1970s, Mr. Negri began teaching jazz guitar at Duquesne University and then expanded to the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon. In 1999, Matt Hudson came from his hometown in Erie to study guitar at Pitt. He found a mentor in Mr. Negri.

“Joe can play something flashy, but it always takes a back seat to melody and phrasing. There’s not a wasted note,” he says.

Mr. Negri, who just turned 91, becomes sad when he talks about friends and musicians he has lost. On “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” the deaths of three neighbors — Don Brockett in 1995 at age 65, Johnny Costa, 74, in 1996, and Bob Trow in 1998 at 72 — hit the cast hard.

“Fred said, ‘Before we lose anyone else, I’m going to end the show,’” he recalls.

The show’s last episode aired in August 2001. Rogers died in February 2003, at age 74. Seven years later, Bobby Negri died at age 81.

Mr. Hudson, who now teaches music at Lane Technical High School in Chicago, turns on his students to Mr. Negri’s arrangements of jazz standards.

“He’s very lyrical, very melodic. It sounds easy and breezy when he does it. … Joe’s the real deal!”

In the 1990s and early 2000s, Mr. Negri released five CDs: “Mass of Hope,” “Afternoon in Rio,” “Guitars for Christmas,” “Uptown Elegance” and “Dream Dancing.” Noah Todd, 18, of Chicago has all of them. The recent Lane Tech graduate discovered Mr. Negri through his teacher. Mr. Hudson encouraged the young guitarist to email a video of him playing a Negri solo to the master.

“The morning after, he responded with the most encouraging words and ideas,” Mr. Todd says.

He has had only one actual lesson with his virtual mentor, when he auditioned for Duquesne’s School of Music. Mr. Todd is looking forward to many more lessons; he starts at Duquesne this fall. “He is literally world-class, even if nobody knows him outside of Pittsburgh. …. The world doesn’t need more musicians. It needs more good people.”

On Aug. 11, Brooks Bartlett and his wife, Helen, are planning a special concert to honor Mr. Negri at St. Barnabas Health System’s Kean Theatre. The concert will benefit St. Barnabas’ free care fund.

“I thought he deserved something like this. He is such a nice guy — no pretense at all. Pittsburgh is lucky to have him.”
