Before individuals started to promote cannabis as a medicine, the Maryland government had tight guidelines and laws regarding the use of medicinal marijuana and cannabis-related items. Maryland's state legislature enacted a measure in 2013 that aims to establish a staterun medical marijuana programme. The Natalie M. LaPrade Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission was the organisation in charge of this initiative (MMCC). The patients who require medicinal cannabis for therapeutic purposes may possess cannabis products in accordance with Maryland's medical marijuana rules. To obtain an MMJ ID card, however, they must register with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC).
Starting on December 1, 2017, this law is in effect. However, the patient will require a reference from a licenced doctor in order to be recognised before the MMCC.
