from the Artistic Director Hello and welcome to Historic Downtown Frederick Maryland and the MET! Hopefully, you’ve just had an incredible meal at one of the many eateries within a “stones throw” of our theatre, you’ve parked for $1 or less, you’ve run into many delightful people on the street outside and you are now ready for a memorable experience at Maryland Ensemble Theatre! The MET is rapidly approaching our 3rd decade of bringing visceral entertainment to the region! A fledgling project that begin in April of 1993 as The Comedy Pigs in the back room of the Olde Towne Tavern has grown into a full fledged regional theatre with a slate of over 100 performances of professional theatre, comedy improv, excellent training for actors, after school drama programs for elementary schools, original theatre projects and wonderful family theatre! With your help, we have grown. In 1993, there was one theatre in downtown Frederick. Now there are three, and you have helped develop two of the three! Some of you long-time patrons will remember that we renovated the downtown McCrory’s building into what is now the Cultural Arts Center of Frederick County. This season we see a slate of incredible plays! From classic American playwrights who can’t be any further apart on the continuum of theatre art – the insanely funny Christopher Durang and the gritty David Mamet – to two MET originals. Again, we explore polar opposites, from a classic re-exploration of Antigone to the spoof country variety show of The All New, Grand Ole Hee Haw Hootenany Hoe Down Jamboree! Sprinkle in a dark comedy about the end of the world and a crazy holiday show The Eight Reindeer Monologues – and we hope to have you here for every show this season! Enjoy the show!

Director’s Notes We’ve been lucky here at MET with the selection of our season offerings. We have a process by which our ensemble members select the following year’s shows and usually we can secure the rights without a problem. This year was a bit different. The show we had originally chosen for this slot was not yet released, and with our season brochure deadline quickly approaching, we made the decision to produce Christopher Durang’s hilarious new, highly-acclaimed show, which you are here to see. After quickly securing the rights for this show and finalizing it for our season, we had two realizations. The first was that Why Torture is Wrong... was scheduled for our first slot, which meant that it opened the weekend of 9/11 and more importantly, that it would be the 10th anniversary of the tragedy that changed the way many of us view the world. We were reminded of that weekend in 2001 when the Towers were still burning and we made the decision to remain open despite the closing of a majority of theatres throughout the country. The show was Skin Deep, a MET original, and it was met that weekend with an appreciative audience who thanked us for allowing them to escape for a while from all that was chaotic around them. In our play today, Felicity is cast into a world that many of us will find familiar. She struggles to make sense of the madness surrounding her and hopes for a chance to redo some of the past for a happier ending. Isn’t that what we’ve all hoped for in the years since that day? Durang has said that for him, the play is a “comic catharsis.” Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to escape the repercussions of that time, and his play reflects our collective desire to “take a redo” of the last 10 years. Meet the Cast Vanessa Strickland (Felicity) is honored (and pumped!) to be performing in MET’s season opener as a brand new company member. Other MET credits: A Clockwork Orange (Ensemble), Dracula (Mina), and Fun Co: The Amazing Interactive Adventure and Ma Lien & the Magic Paintbrush. This summer, Vanessa made her performance triple-header debut at the Capital Fringe Festival with I Like Nuts! (the Musical), Pascal’s Aquarium, and cloudism. She has performed in the DC/ MD/VA area with Young Playwrights Theatre, Inkwell Theatre, Deviated Theatre, Synetic Family Theatre, and the Puppet Co. at Glen Echo Park. Julie Herber (Luella) is Associate Artistic Director of the MET and Artistic Director of The Fun Company: MET: Dead Man’s Cell Phone, A Christmas Twist, Planet Claire, Dusty & the Big Bad World, Almost Maine, Blue Window, Doll’s House, Incorruptible, Company, Cripple of Inishmaan, Killer Joe, Macbeth, Betty the Yeti, Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge The Canterbury Tales, Somthing Brilliant, Skin Deep. Julie is an instructor for The Ensemble School and also teaches at Frederick Community and McDaniel Colleges. Tim Seltzer (Leonard) Tim is proud to be returning to the MET’s main stage where he was last seen in A Clockwork Orange and the Fun Company’s The Littlest Vampire. Prior to that, he was right next door in Doubt: A Parable for No DOG Theatre Company, which he co-founded with his lovely wife Lia. Favorite shows directed include The Complete Works of Shakespeare, Abridged and Eleemosynary. Favorite roles include Elwood P. Dowd and Andrew Agucheek and F. Alexander. He will direct The Eight Reindeer Monologues for the MET this December. All his love goes to Lia, Wilson, Ysa and Renee for being so understanding and supportive. Reiner Prochaska (Rev. Mike) a proud MET ensemble member, is an actor, a writer (he is currently working on a new adaptation of Antigone for the MET’s 2011/12 Season), and a filmmaker. He was last seen on the MET stage in A Clockwork Orange and is excited about being able to work with several of the cast members from that production again. Thanks to Gene’ for this challenging opportunity, to Doug and the crew/design team for their hard work to make this a successful production, and to Ken for his unfailing encouragement. And, finally, thanks to our patrons for supporting live theatre that can make audiences laugh and think. Lisa Burl (Hildegarde) Lisa was most recently seen on the MET stage in Dead Man’s Cell Phone (Jean). Other MET credits include Blue Window (Libby), Betty the Yeti (Iko), and Red Herring (multiple roles). She is a proud company member and is happy to be working with such a talented cast and crew. Thank you to Gene’ for the opportunity, her friends and family for their love and support, and Riley and Stella for being so understanding of her crazy schedule. Matt Lee (Voice) Previous shows: A Clockwork Orange, West Side Story, Planet Claire, The Cripple of Inishmaan, Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge (MET) and Dog Sees God (NoDog). He recently wrote The Littlest Vampire for Fun Company. He is an improv artist and most recently performed in the Comedy Pigs 18th Anniversary improv show. Matt is currently a MET ensemble member and a student at Hood College.
Meet the Crew Gené Fouché (Director) is an Associate Artistic Director with MET, where she also serves as Director of Education. Other MET directing credits include: Killer Joe, Something Brilliant Will Come to Us, Skin Deep, among others. Regionally she has directed for Landless Theatre Company, The Fun Company, CATF’s staged reading series, McDaniel College and Tell Baby Productions at Baltimore Theatre Project. Gené also teaches at McDaniel College. Thanks to her family for their support. Doug Grove (Stage Management)A proud MET Company Member, Doug has held many positions in many theatres including design work, stage management, crew positions, and on rare occasions, acting. MET shows include ASM for House of Yes and Planet Claire, props for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and A Clockwork Orange, special effects for Dracula, light design for A Christmas Twist and Boeing Boeing, and Stage Manager for Dead Man’s Cell Phone. He is also the Technical Director for the MET and a co-Technical Director at Hood College Theatre. Doug would like to thank his family and friends for all their support. Geoffrey Huntoon (Assistant Stage Manager) is very excited to continue his work with the MET! His first MET opportunity was this past summer as Diesel in West Side Story. Other recent appearances of Geoffrey include Joshua and Edward in Caryl Churchill’s Cloud Nine, and the role of the father in Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice. This is Geoffrey’s first time as assistant stage manager, and it has been a great learning experience! Joann Lee (Set Design) is a MET company member and Hood College’s Art Director. Scenic designs for the MET include: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Planet Claire (2010), All Lit Up, Amost Maine, Santaland Diaries, Incorruptible, Company, Red Herring, Betty the Yeti, Betrayal, Mrs. Bob Cratchit’s Wild Christmas Binge and Blue Window, Don Q and many Fun Company productions. Performance credits include: Exuviae, Something Brilliant Will Come to Us and numerous Fun Company productions. Tabetha White (Light Design) Tabetha White has a B.F.A. in Theatre Design from West Virginia University and is currently the Theatre Coordinator for the Carroll County Arts Council. Recent lighting design credits include Curtains, Dog Sees God, Antigone, and Greater Tuna. Tabetha also designs concert and dance lighting, dance companies she has designed for include Equinox, Jazzlan, and the Carroll County Dance Collaborative. Steve Younkins (Sound Designer) A recent graduate of Hood College, this is Steven’s 4th production with the MET. Previous credits with the MET include sound tech for West Side Story, the Larry Project, and Planet Claire. With HCT: sound design for Eurydice and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, sound tech for Cloud 9 and Mermaid Avenue. Steven would like to thank Tad & Gené, Doug, Courtney, Katie, and Geoff. Devin Gaither (Props) is a proud MET company member and MFA student at the University of Southern Maine’s Fiction Writing Program. She carries a double B.A. in Design and English Literature from Hood College. Most recently, Devin co-stage managed Boeing Boeing, and was seen in A Clockwork Orange, Dracula, and Don Q. Rachel Cody (Costume Design) Rachael is pleased to be working with the MET theatre again, and remembers fondly, back to the beginning days of the MET, in the old McCrory’s building and designing Finally Heard. She is thrilled to see how much this theatre company has grown. With a BFA degree in ‘85 from WVU, she has designed for many theatres such as; Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival, Indiana Reperatory Theatre, Contemporary American Theatre Festival, Cedar Point Amusement Park, and Disney.
