At the turn of the 20th century, William Leslie Miller and his wife Mary moved their family from Washington County, Florida to Grayton Beach where they made a home on what is now known as Western Lake.

On October 10, 1910, W. Leslie Miller was granted a land patent

by President William H. Taft for the homestead of 159.89 acres where he operated a cattle ranch.

This parcel is now comprised of Old Miller Place and a portion of Grayton Beach State Park.

Just one year later, the town’s postmaster, for whom Mary provided care, passed away, leaving the Miller’s his home on DeFuniak Street.

In the 1920’s, the Murray family moved to Grayton Beach, combining two shacks to make their home just south of the Miller’s new beach-side retreat. Through three generations, the two families were neighbors until December, 1989 when the Murray’s sold the property to W. Leslie and Mary’s granddaughter, Shirley Sahlie.

Not long after purchasing the Murray House, The Sahlie’s hired newly-established O.B. Laurent Construction to manage the renovation of the unique 1920’s cottage. The two-year long project began in 1991 and was followed by the construction of the carriage house in 1996.

In the years that followed, the Sahlie’s would enclose the back porch where Shirley would regularly sit on a wicker sofa and read. The original ice box is still a fixture in the home to this day.

The main house kitchen was later renovated and the pool was added in 2005, joined by the Hufham Farris built pool cabana two years later.
