Snow + Marcellus = Fun! There is nothing that warms the heart more than a quiet little hometown covered in snow. The town and village of Marcellus sparkles when it snows. In addition to looking like a scene pulled out of Frank Capra’s beloved movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”, Marcellus comes alive in the snow with many outdoor winter activities. There are miles and miles of cross-country ski trails to explore. Many of the treks begin at Marcellus’ Baltimore Woods located on Bishop Hill Road. Snowmobilers find Marcellus a welcome respite along their way with easy access to fuel for their machines and their bellies!

There are miles and miles of snowmobile trails in the Town of Marcellus. Many snowmobilers begin their explorations from Marcellus Park. The Marcellus Snowmobile Club works very hard to keep trails around Marcellus groomed and accessible all winter.

You can always come in from the cold for the perfect cup of coffee at The Beanery Cafe, 24 West Main Street, or experience the culinary expertise of Chef Dan Curley at Daniel’s Grill, 69 North Street.

If something sweet helps take the bite of the cold, The Chocolate Pizza Company, 60 East Main Street, has plenty of world-famous chocolate treats.

Marcellus is also home to the most unique gift shop in Central New York--Angel Heart Gifts, 16 East Main Street.

Chocolate Pizza has Record Season The world-famous chocolate is a popular gift for business clients.

The Chocolate Pizza Company, 60 East Main Street in Marcellus, was a beehive of activity this past holiday season.

The owner, Bonnie Hanyak, says her company pulled in record sales and reached more people in many more new geographic areas than any season before.

“We had our biggest order ever this year of 450 gifts,” says Hanyak. “All those gifts turn into

more customers as more and more people are introduced to our delicious chocolate pizza and peanut butter wings.”

Hanyak says a job covering 150 apples with caramel and chocolate for weddings favors turned into an order for client gifts from Jones Apparel in New York City.

Chamber Welcomes Daniel’s Grill Members of the Greater Marcellus Community Chamber recently officially welcomed Daniel’s Grill to the Marcellus business community.

Dan Curley, owner and head chef at Daniel’s Grill, says the response to his restaurant has been outstanding. “We’ve had many repeat customers already and we’ve attracted people from all over.”

Curley describes Daniel’s Grill as casual with a twist. “You’ll always find interesting things on the menu that are very affordable,” Curley says.

Some of Curley’s signature menu items include: parmesancrusted chicken breast, scallop and shrimp puttanesca, fried calamari over linguine, crab-stuffed sole, lobster ravioli, pot roast, grilled lamb chops with rosemary Cabernet sauce, brie and almond quesadilla , cajun grouper on ciabatta bread as well as nachos and wings.

Curley, the former executive chef at the Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles, had a long time dream to open his own place. “I researched it for a long time. I finally found the right building in the right time and place,” he says.

“I opened up three Kahunaville restaurants in Korea,” Curley says.

Curley lives in Marcellus with his wife, Dina. The couple are often spotted in the dining room talking with customers and answering questions.

“I like Marcellus. There is a lot going on and it’s changing for the better,” says Curley.

Reiki Treatments Gaining in Popularity Laurie Rupracht is a Reiki Practitioner in Marcellus Medical researchers are finding more evidence that the mind plays a huge role in how we heal.

Many doctors now recommend taking the time to heal your mind and spirit while undergoing many conventional medical treatments.

According to a survey released last May by the National Institutes of Health, 36 percent of adults in the U.S. use some form of alternative medicine.

One system of natural healing is called Reiki. This Japanese technique uses gentle touch to harmonize and balance the mind, body, spirit and emotions. The therapy produces a deep state of relaxation which helps to balance the body’s natural energy field.

Reiki has been reported to help alleviate physical pain, release energy blocks, lift mental and emotional distress, boost the immune system, promote wound healing and increase the body’s blood flow.

Marcellus’ own Laurie Rupracht is a Reiki Practitioner.

She learned the technique of alternative healing under the direction of Master Reiki instructor Lori Wahrendorf. After two years of study, Laurie earned her certificate as a 2nd degree Reiki Practitioner. Laurie is also a Registered Nurse.

“It’s amazing what Reiki can do for someone,” says Rupracht.

“Sometimes they come to treat one aspect of their body and leave feeling better in another aspect because they weren’t aware they needed healing there.”

A cancer patient who received Reiki treatments from Rupracht during her chemotherapy regiment says her doctor was amazed at how well she looked during the final weeks of therapy. “My doctor said I looked better and I felt better my fifth week of chemo than the 3rd or fourth

Marcellus Now Home to Rare Miniature Donkeys

A piece of Italy’s history is alive and well and walking around on four legs in Marcellus New York. The new Marcell-ass Minis company on Slate Hill Road is the only breeding farm of Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys in the northeast.

Eileen Sabine with one of her Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys. ”They’re the perfect pets,” says Eileen Sabine of Marcell-ass Minis. “They’re snugly and huggy.

They’re just amazing.”

Sabine is raising seven Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys with her husband, Mike. Female donkeys are called jennets, males are called jacks. The donkeys have a sweet, sociable disposition. Most donkeys at maturity (3 years) are less than 35 inches tall and weigh less than 200 pounds. They come in many color combinations but all miniature donkeys have a black cross in their hair down their back and across their shoulders. Some people believe the cross on their backs is a reminder of when a donkey helped carry the cross of Jesus.

The National Miniature Donkey Association in Rome, New York reports purebred Miniature Donkeys in the Mediterranean area are disappearing largely due to the mixing of the breed with larger varieties of donkey. “For this reason, the Donkeys in North America have global genetic value,” the NMDA website reports.

The species was practically extinct when Robert Green brought thirty Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys to North America in the early 1900’s. Today their population is nearly 20,000 in the United States.

Eileen and Mike are expecting their third baby donkey in April.

Their 5-year-old jennet named ‘Cookie’ is due to deliver then after a 13-month gestation.

Since donkeys are herd animals, Sabine says they only sell their Miniature Mediterranean Donkeys in pairs unless the donkey is being purchased as a companion to another animal like a horse. Sabine says a donkey’s worth is determined by its pedigree. Her animals are priced between $800 and $3,500.

“They’re just precious animals,” says Sabine. “They have just pure love and trust.”

Within two years, she had 50 people working for her to turn out the most delicious nut crunch anyone had ever experienced. Eventually the Cummings family of Marcellus began to make the famous “almond butter crunch.” For more than 40 years they made and sold the sweet stuff from their home on North Street in Marcellus. Now Bonnie owns the secret recipe and adds it to her decadently delicious chocolates.
