As disciplines in new media rapidly expand and evolve, Cayuga Community College’s School of Media and the Arts (SOMA) and Telcom Department continue to develop new, focused areas of study to provide students expertise in Public Relations and Social Media Communications to prepare them to compete for careers in new media or expand transfer opportunities.

The Social Media Communications concentration is available in Cayuga’s Media Communications Associate of Science (AS) and the Media Production Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs. A rigorous curriculum including media writing, Adobe’s Photoshop software and social media analytics is required in both CONTINUED NEXT PAGE

Media Communications Cayuga Community College continues to expand its curriculum to keep ahead of the rapidly changing world of Media. The college’s Telcom Department is now offering an associate’s degree in Media Communications. This program is for students who wish to transfer to four-year programs and pursue careers in Media, Communications, and related fields such as Public Relations, Journalism, Social Media, Media Management, and Strategic Communications.

The Public Relations concentration, which is also part of the Media Communications AS degree program, builds students’ skills in written and oral communication, media, social media and building relationships. Course work includes media writing and studying past public relations cases.

Media Production (AAS) This popular program prepares students for a variety of employment opportunities in media or to transfer to a four-year school. Graduates are prepared in media management, production, operations, and announcing.

Media Production Concentrations Video/Digital Film Production Film & Cinema Studies Broadcast Journalism Social Media Communications

Audio-Music Production (AAS) This course of study develops skills in audio and radio production.

Students are prepared for careers in music recording, audio programming, radio operations, audio for television, film, and theatre, and operation and design of sound systems.

Telecommunications Technology (AAS) This program prepares students for employment in telecommunications and related industries. Students learn to operate, install, maintain, and repair the audio, video, RF, and specialized communications equipment found in media and telecommunications industries.

Taught by professors with vast experience in each area of study, the new concentrations’ courses are designed to employ hands-on, real-world experiences for students, helping them to build their resumes immediately.

“They need to be able to write across different platforms at different lengths, utilize video and audio, and to be able to convert that so it can be featured online,” he said.

“These are the people who are the developing the words and pictures people will see on business’ social media accounts.”

Keeler noted that the concentrations would also likely provide students with opportunities for internships at local businesses.

MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS A.S. DEGREE CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE Cayuga has had media degree programs since 1969, however, the programs have always been AAS degree programs.

“Over time, as the landscape of the media industries has evolved, many more students are transferring to 4-year degree programs rather than entering the workforce,” said Cayuga Community College Humanities Division Chairperson,

School of Media and the Arts Director, and Professor Steve Keeler.

“While we still emphasize handson learning, this change will better serve those students wishing to transfer.”

The new Media Communications AS degree fulfills SUNY’s General Education requirements for transfer. The program is also in sync with established SUNY transfer pathways.

SAVE MONEY WITH CAYUGA’S TRANSFERFRIENDLY ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS Students looking to continue their education at a 4-year college after completing a degree in Media at Cayuga Community College now have an easy path to transfer with Cayuga Community College’s articulation agreements.

“An articulation agreement gives a student a guarantee that they can finish their bachelor’s’ degree in two years and that all their credits will be accepted.,” Cayuga Community College Humanities Division Chairperson, School of Media and the Arts Director, and Professor Steve Keeler said. “The four schools that we have chosen for articulation agreements have superior media programs at the bachelor’s level and are very transfer-friendly. “ Keeler says students can save a tremendous amount of money on their education by coming to

Cayuga first and then transferring after two years. ““It’s very important to us that students have the opportunity to pursue a bachelor’s degree after receiving their associate’s degree in Media at Cayuga,” Keeler said.

CCC has articulation agreements with Le Moyne College, SUNY Fredonia, SUNY Cortland, and SUNY Oswego.

High school students interested in careers in media can start earning credit toward a college degree while still in high school. CCC has articulation agreements with a number of New York high schools.

“Students who have taken communications-related high school courses, (Media, Video Production, Radio, Journalism, Photography), may receive college credit at Cayuga for those courses,” said Keeler.

AERIAL DRONE CINEMATOGRAPHY COURSE TAKES OFF AT CAYUGA Cayuga Community College’s Media Department’s unique course in aerial drone cinematography provides students skills needed in today’s fast changing world of new technology to become more ‘job-ready.’

“Aerial drone cinematography is being utilized across the board in business. From law enforcement, to real estate agents, to wedding planners; this new technology is being used in new and surprising ways in a variety of industries,” said Cayuga Community College Humanities Division Chairperson, School of Media and the Arts Director and Professor Steve Keeler. “Having training in drone aerial cinematography expands a student’s skill set, widening their window for job opportunities.”

CCC’s Aerial Drone Cinematography course provides students with instruction in operating an aerial camera launched into flight by a remotecontrolled drone. Keeler says students are also instructed about federal regulations regarding the legal and proper use of drones and aerial cameras.

“We have expanded our fleet of drones so that each student will have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience as drone pilots

to the point where they can use the drone camera in settings of their choice to enhance the production value of their individual projects,“ said Keeler who trained to become an FAA Certified Drone Pilot.

The drones used in the class are DJI Mavic Pros, a quadcopter which is equipped with a Go Pro type camera which can capture professional-quality, high resolution, moving images or stills in full color which then streams a high definition live view feed to a monitor on the ground. The drones’ sleek design has state-of-the-art propellers to increase flight time and reduce noise. The drones have a stable flight mode which allows for hovering to capture continuous action.

“It is exciting to watch students’ creativity soar as they learn to utilize all the tools media professionals are presently using,” said Keeler.

Cayuga’s Media Department is committed to providing its students with the broadest range of video production experiences so they can hit the ground running when entering the workforce.

“With all the hands-on training available with the latest in media technology at CCC, students can expect their careers to take off,” Keeler said.

Al Nall was recently appointed as the Public Affairs officer for the Howard County Health Dept. in Howard County, Maryland.

Ryan Murphy is the A&R Director for Astralwerks Records in New York City, a division of Capitol Music Group, one of the largest music companies in the world.
