Gabrielle Rizzo of Auburn is a 2016 graduate of Tyburn Academy.

She is studying Liberal Arts and Gabrielle Rizzo Humanities at CCC. She also serves as historian of CCC’s chapter of PBL.

CCC NURSES EARN 10O PERCENT EXAM PASS RATE Cayuga Community College’s Class of 2016 nursing graduates earned a 100% pass rate on the National Council Licensure Exam.

Only two programs in New York State have achieved this level of performance.

The national average is 85.25% and the New York State average is 83.5%.

Cayuga’s six year average is 99.3%.

Make America Great Again Early morning on November 9, Donald J Trump was named president of the United States of America. Also waking up early this morning social media was outraged with this decision.

People can’t believe that he won. Some people are absolutely devastated over this. I am here to tell you that, it is what it is. He won fair and square, although many people around the world are outraged with this, this man somehow won it all with having no one behind him. Everyone was against him saying “This man can’t be president”. “He has no idea what it’s like to be in politics”.

The status of the legalization of marijuana in New York is that doctors don’t want to prescribe their patients medical marijuana because it will “harm” their reputation. Many politicians argue that marijuana is dangerous and can cause death. On the other hand, others state that marijuana is harmless.

Even though marijuana has its setbacks I am completely for the legalization of marijuana.

One reason why I believe marijuana should be legalized is because marijuana is a mood stabilizer which would help the crime rate decrease. Marijuana is not like some of the drugs that are out there like heroin that are not mood stabilizers. Heroin causes people to do crazy things.

Heroin is also highly addictive. Heroin is also a big domestic violence issue. When using heroin, you are more prone to violence and damaging your body then if you smoked marijuana. Smoking

According to The Post-Standard, the elevated portion of Interstate 81 through Syracuse will be torn down and replaced with either a more modern version of the elevated highway or a community grid that funnels traffic onto city streets. There also was an idea of turning the highway into a tunnel but they dropped the idea because it is too expensive and would take too long to build.

I’m from Syracuse, NY and I drive on the highway daily so my opinion would be the community grid that funnels onto the streets.

I think that the community grid would be the best choice because it is the least expensive idea.

The other ideas are more expensive and would take longer to do. So why not try something new without having to put a lot of money into it. It is also the safest because the new streets would have landscaped medians, high visibility crosswalks and bump-outs at the corners to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians which is more safe because the roads now are very wide. The new streets would also add bicycle and pedestrian use.

All that may be true, but he won for a reason. He won because people really do think he will make America great again. Maybe he will, maybe he will turn out to be the best president we have ever had, he may be the worst. We never know how they will turn out, that’s why it’s so nerve racking to make a decision on who to write on the ballots. These next four years will show whether or not he meant everything he said. We Can only hope that he does.

In recent news there has been an upsetting protest going on throughout the United States. Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback decided to sit during the National Anthem before the game. And now, it’s a problem all over the athletic world, high school sports to professional sports. I feel no matter what you shouldn’t be able to sit during the National Anthem, no matter how mad you are at the country due to the situations going on in the U.S. currently.

One reason that Americans shouldn’t be allowed to sit during the National anthem is because we listen and stand up for it to respect our nation and the people fighting for our freedom and the past and the present of the United States. Another reason I believe everyone should stand during the National Anthem is even though there are multiple controversies going in the U.S. like the cop riots, all the shootings and the discrimination riots and even the election. And now we have to deal with riots going on about the National Anthem. In an article by syracuse.com, Colin Kaepernick states “I will not stand to show respect to a nation that oppresses colored people.” I agree there is many problems going on in the United States but sitting during the National Anthem has caused another problem in the U.S. One of the problems that I think is the worst in this situation of not standing during the National Anthem is, because of Colin Kaepernick sitting for the National Anthem the kids that are playing high school sports are starting to follow in the NFL Football Players and not standing for the National Anthem. They think it’s cool to do because the celebrities or their favorite players are doing it. My opinion is that if they decide not to stand they shouldn’t be able to play until they start standing.Once they stand they can play.

Therefore, that’s why I feel no matter what, you are not able to sit during the National Anthem no matter how mad you are at the country due to the situations going on in the U.S. currently.

Making things more safe is always good and I believe that the specific part of the highway is dangerous especially when it’s busy. It’s dangerous and my least favorite part because of how you have to merge right into the east Syracuse lane coming south with lots of other cars coming up the ramp trying to merge left into the Baldwinsville lane. I have had a lot of bad encounters with that part of the highway so that’s why I think that we should get rid of it and try something new.

The highway would change to streets and they

would probably add more tree’s and things to make the community look better. I think it would bring our schools and hospitals together so it would be more included in downtown Syracuse. I also think it would look way better than what it is now because they would have to fix our streets and remodel.

The highway separates many things from downtown because the highway cuts straight through the heart of the city. It divides the schools and hospitals from downtown Syracuse. It also cuts through homes that are in poverty and with the highway being right in the middle of it, it doesn’t really help the homes getting out of poverty.

The community grid idea is not only the safer faster and cheaper way but it would also help with getting some of our people out of poverty and bringing downtown Syracuse together instead of it being divided by a busy highway. It would allow our pedestrians to walk or ride their bike safely without having to worry about being hit by a car.

If Marijuana was legalized it would also help businesses like Walmart because people would be buying a lot of food. Grocery stores would profit from the legalization of marijuana because people would have the munchies. They would be thinking man I’m hungry. They would then go to the store, buy all the food their budget sets them to, and go on a rampage eating all the food they just bought.

In conclusion, I do think marijuana should be legalized not because “it’s bad” in the eyes of politicians, the news, and the people who go with what politicians say but because it’s a plant. In reality however, it really isn`t bad at all. In would help with poverty, politics, and domestic violence for all sorts of people.

According to The Washington Post, Nationwide in the United States, has found that 28,000 people have died in 2014 from heroin overdoses. On the other hand, if you try to overdose on marijuana you fall asleep.

Growing your own marijuana w o u l d teach you how to farm and cultivate marijuana. By doing so it would help you learn to grow other crops like corn or potatoes which gives you, your own food.

Marijuana is also good for the economy creating jobs for people. It would create jobs for people

Hi, I’m Gabby Rizzo. I’m 18, and last semester I graduated from Tyburn Academy. My major is Liberal Arts and Humanities with a writing concentration, and I plan on transferring to either Wells College, Oswego University, or Ithaca College and continuing my education in writing and possibly double majoring in History. As well as being Associate Editor, I am also the Historian of CCC’s chapter of PBL. Along with writing, I love Netflix, coffee, dogs, and music, especially Simon & Garfunkel or Led Zepplin if you want to be my new best friend. I’m very excited to be a part of the paper. SPORTS GO SPARTANS! GO SPARTANS! Nijuwan Smith Named NJCAA Division III National Player-of-the-Week GO SPARTANS! Spartans get first win of the season Nijuwan Smith (Henninger HS; Syracuse, NY) from Cayuga CC was named the NJCAA Division III National Player-ofthe-Week for November 1-6. Smith averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds in three games during week one of the 2016-17 men’s basketball season for the Spartans. Smith had back-to-back

double-doubles over the weekend in the team’s win against Hudson Valley (27pts/10reb)…while collecting 16 points and 15 rebounds in win over Adirondack. Earlier in the week Smith had 20 points and 8 rebounds in a 2-point loss to #5 nationally ranked Herkimer.

The Cayuga Spartans Men’s basketball team traveled to Hudson Valley C.C. November 5th and recorded its first win of the season. Spartan freshman Nijuwan Smith (Syracuse, NY) led the way with his first career double-double pumping in 27 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 block, Jon Bell (Auburn, NY) scored 12 points and added 5 rebounds, while Anthony Burgos CCC’s Quinton Williams (Brooklyn, NY) chipped in with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Cayuga lost to Fulton-Montgomery 75 - 71 on Wednesday, November 9th.

Cayuga traveled to Schenectady County Community College. over the weekend.

Lady Spartans drop another game on the road The Cayuga Lady Spartans dropped a 58-40 decision on the road at Adirondack Community College.

The Spartans were led by Sydney Patzke (Phoenix, NY) with 13 points, Gabby Bell (Syracuse, NY) and Khalia Pitts (Syracuse, NY) each scored 9 points for the Spartans. Jaylin Kelly (Bloomfield, NY) pulled down a team high 8 rebounds.

Despite an incredible 30 point 15 rebound effort

by Dontasia Britt (Brooklyn, NY) the Cayuga Lady Spartans dropped a hard fought 78-71 decision at Hudson CCC’s Sydney Patzke Valley Community College. Jaylin Kelly (Bloomfield, NY) also chipped in with a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Spartans who led 36-35 at halftime were unable to hold the lead as foul trouble took a toll. Three players eventually fouled out before the game ended.

Cayuga played a tough Fulton-Montgomery team on and lost 75 - 55 November 9th.

The Lady Spartans are back in action on Thursday, November 17th at home. The game begins at 7 p.m.

Lobby front desk on Auburn Campus to remain unattended

Everyone wants to feel safe at school.

Unfortunately, there have been too many shootings at schools across the nation making students anxious about their safety while on campus.

If you were hoping to see Michael Shwedick and his program, Reptile World, this semester on the Auburn Campus, you will have to wait till next spring.

The Cayuga Collegian received a statement from SAB Co-President Mariah Johnson,which read “Reptile World has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for next semester.”

Johnson says the surprising cancellation was because of two reasons. “We had too many back-toback events and a lack of participation from within SAB. We had a lot of members stop coming to meetings and stop helping with events, so we had to cut back on events,” said Johnson.

Are we safe at Cayuga Community College?

The head of the college’s security department, Doug Kinney, says his department is doing everything possible to keep students, faculty and staff safe.

Kinney would not say exactly how many officers are on campus at any given time.

“There are enough officers here,” said Kinney.

Many people on the Auburn campus have voiced their concerns about the front desk in the lobby being unmanned since the retirement of the daytime college receptionist.

“There is no one at the front desk because it was a risk of their CCC’s Head of own safety,” explained Security Doug Kinney.

Kinney He says during fire drills the person at the front desk was not allowed to leave the desk until everyone in the building was out, and that was unsafe for them.

Although Kinney wasn’t at liberty to say why there is no longer someone at the front desk, that is all he could say.

SOMA Talent Showcase revisited

By Gabby Rizzo, associate editor Students took to the stage, grabbed a microphone and participated in SOMA’s recent Talent Showcase.

Each act fell into four categories, those being drama, original song, cover song, and original poem. At the end, a winner of each category was announced. The master of ceremonies for the showcase was Professor Mark Montgomery.

Five of the acts were performing covered songs. The first act of the day was the duo Mike Gagliardi and Jimmy Minde.

Mike, on the drums, and Jimmy, on the keyboard, performed an instrumental medley of Eminem songs.

Next to perform was Rissa Adams, who sang Christina Aguilera’s “Bound to You” a capella. Later, Tony Tethers, also referred to as “Feathers” performed “Hamilton’s” tribute to “Sweeny Todd.”

Next came Robbie Cregg, who when not performing was reading Tarot cards. Cregg performed Adele’s version of “Make You Feel My Love,” which was done a capella.

To finish out the category was the duo Brendon Gill and Brad Kruger.

Brendon and Brad performed the Beatles’ “Yesterday” with both singing and Brad playing the guitar.

The next category was original poem. First of the category was Haley Hofmann with a historical poem called “The Delaware Crossing.” Next was Katie Stout with a powerful poem about Linsey Hobart

sexual assault entitled “Stake and Dandelion Greens of Self Loathing.” After, was Najhea Thompson with “The ABC’s of My Life.” After were Emma Jarvis and Linsey Hobart, both Najhea with untitled poems.

Thompson The last two categories were drama and original song.

For drama, Hannah Abrams performed a monologue from William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” She put on a very energetic and amusing performance as the role of “Puck.”

To end the show, Olivia Bullard Olivia Bullard sang and performed an original song on the piano. It was a powerful song about self acceptance and it was a very heartfelt performance.

While each act performed, there were several things going on simultaneously.

There was a big crowd pleaser with the boxes of Mark’s Pizza lined up of the counter, as well as stations set up for different areas of SOMA. Radio station faculty advisor Jeffrey helmed the table for the radio station, WIN89-FM. There was an area with artwork made by students. At the artwork station, art students were also doing portraits of their peers.

As the event began to wind down, winners were announced. Brendon and Brad won song cover, Linsey Hobart won original poem, Hannah Abrams won dramatic performance, and Olivia Bullard won original song.

Comic brings hilarity to Auburn Campus

By Gabby Rizzo, associate editor Last Wednesday, the Student Activities Board (SAB) brought in comedian Derrick Knopsnyder. The event was held in The Cube, on the Auburn campus and had a pretty good sized crowd turn up.

Each latecomer to the event, Knopsnyder would ask each one jokingly where they had been. Knopsnyder was very big on interaction, asking several students about what they majored in and general questions, like what is there even to do in Auburn.

Knopsnyder was very energetic and covered many topics within the hour allotted.

These topics ranged from anything like why people would want to have children, to colleges that have a Quidditch team, to bike cops.

Knopsnyder gave his perspective on each topic, which were generally very amusing. His jokes were also different from one another, some being more in-depth while others were random and hilarious anecdotes.

Knopsnyder was also extremely friendly, talking with students before and after his show, posing for ‘selfies,’ and even followed students back on Instagram.
