10 days when my mother was lingering and in distress. “It was an awful death and unnecessarily prolonged.”
The commission’s report is due by March next year for the government’s final consideration.
Now she fears her father has no quality of life.
That may be too late for supporters of voluntary assisted dying such as Sue Brooks. Ms Brooks, a former councillor, is a Maryborough voter who cares for her father Tom, 94, who has end-stage dementia. It was when her mother died from lung disease in the 2000s when her support for voluntary assisted dying crystallised. Now seeing her father’s decline has only cemented that conviction. JAY FIELDING IT MAY not have been at the top of voters’ minds during the coronavirus pandemic but the issue of euthanasia is coming into focus ahead of this month’s state election. Voluntary assisted euthanasia was the subject of a high-profile State Government inquiry during the term of parliament that is drawing to an end. A majority of the committee that ran the inquiry concluded that
voluntary assisted dying should be legalised in Queensland, following Victoria where it’s been legal since last year and WA where it comes into force next year. Committee chair Aaron Harper, a former paramedic, said the inquiry had received information that a person suffering a terminal illness takes their own life in Queensland every four days. “This must stop,” Mr Harper said. “In my view, suicide should
never be the only option for Queenslanders suffering at end of life.” For some, the fact Premier Annastacia Palaczszuk and her government have not dealt with the issue, as they did with abortion, is a source of disappointment. Polling shows at least 70 per cent and up to 80 per cent of Queenslanders support VAD. In May, Ms Palaszczuk asked the Queensland Law Reform
And while she is confident voluntary assisted dying will become legal if Labor wins, she thinks it will be put in the too-hard basket if the LNP is victorious. Ms Brooks said her mother had died an “awful death”. “There was absolutely zero chance of my mother ever recovering,” she said. “Those last 10 weeks were not pleasant for any of us, my father nor my siblings nor the hospital staff, and especially the last
He is legally blind, profoundly deaf, incontinent and doesn’t speak much. They still can share a joke, and Tom has some mobility and understands conversations. “I’ve already explained to my children that I never want them to care for me like I’m caring for my dad,” Ms Brooks said. There are no doubts in the mind of sitting Labor MP Bruce Saunders either. “Yes, I am supporting it,” Mr Saunders said. “If the government is re-elected, I will be voting for it.” Also unequivocal in support for VAD is Legalise Cannabis Queensland’s candidate in Maryborough, River Body. Mr Body said his party supported the push for legal reform. “Personally I support the VAD legislation for people over 18 who meet the required conditions,” he said. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
