Jetstar will begin flying direct from Hervey Bay to Melbourne in June, with three flights carrying up to 1100 passengers in each direction weekly.

A 12-hour sale of $49 flights to mark the announcement sold out within hours.

“Often referred to as the whale watching capital of the world, the Fraser Coast region offers beautiful beaches with calm

waters, perfect for family getaways,” she said.

“We’re excited to be able to provide a low-cost connection to this beautiful region in time for the mid-year school holidays, which in turn will boost local jobs and support tourism.”

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the new flight route was fantastic news for the Fraser Coast.

“Many residents have moved to Hervey Bay from Victoria, and these direct flights will

help families and friends stay connected. It will mean grandparents seeing their grandchildren more often, for example,” Cr Seymour said.

“These flights will also be a huge boost for our tourism industry.

It will open the door for more people to discover the world heritage listed K’gari (Fraser Island), the best whale watching in the world and all the other fantastic attractions and experiences we have here on the Fraser Coast.”

Jetstar currently offers four flights a week between Hervey Bay and Sydney.

Now-defunct airline JetGo previously planned to operate a Hervey Bay-Melbourne flight but cancelled the service a month before it was due to begin in 2017.

In 2020, Virgin cancelled its Hervey Bay-Sydney route during the coronavirus pandemic.

Level two water restrictions FRASER Coast residents will only be permitted to use sprinklers and irrigation systems three nights a week between 4pm and 9am under level two water restrictions taking effect next month.

The new restrictions, which take effect from Monday 4 December 2023, will also mean residents will now only be able to water gardens and fill swimming pools between 4pm and 9am next day.

Mayor George Seymour said while the region’s water storages were still in good shape with Lenthall’s Dam sitting at around 62 per cent and Teddington Weir at about 84 per cent, level two water restrictions were being introduced to help conserve our water supplies.

“About half our water use is outdoors, so that’s where the most opportunities are to save

water and where level two water restrictions are targeted,” he said.

“Level two water restrictions are moderate restrictions aimed at encouraging residents to use water-wise practices such as watering in the evenings and early mornings to prevent evaporation.

“A recent water supply security strategy found that Fraser Coast

residential water consumption is about 240 litres per person per day on average, compared with about 156 litres per person per day in southeast Queensland.

“In recent weeks, the average water consumption has been as high as 300 litres per person.

“That shows that our overall water consumption is not

to manufacturer’s specifications;

excessive, but there are opportunities to reduce demand and use water more efficiently in our homes and on our gardens.

• Topping up swimming pools, spas and water features is only permitted between 4pm and 9am the next day and must be monitored at all times;

“By being water-wise, you not only save water, you also save money on your water bill.”

• Vehicle and boat cleaning is permitted at any time with handheld hoses fitted with a water efficient trigger nozzle.

Level two residential water restrictions include: • Handheld hoses are permitted between 4pm and 9am the next day, but must have a water efficient trigger nozzle;

Level two water restrictions are similar for businesses, although irrigation systems can be used on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 4pm and 9am the next day rather than Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

• Irrigation systems (sprinklers, drippers, soaker hoses) are permitted on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays between 4pm and 9am the next day;

Construction starts on Torbanlea train factory CRAIG WINTER

WORK has officially begun on the Torbanlea train factory.

Major works are now underway at the $239 million facility to transform a former pineapple farm into Australia’s newest state-of-the-art train manufacturing facility, which will manufacture 65 six-car passenger trains to run on the SEQ train network.

It’s claimed that more than 800 jobs will be generated by the project, which also sees an additional $30 million investment by Downer partner Hyundai Rotem who will establish a stand-alone local presence on the Fraser Coast to establish a factory to produce sub-components for train bodies.

The State Government says that this kind of component has been made overseas for decades but will now be made locally

creating an additional 20 jobs.

Downer was awarded the Design Build Maintain Contract for the QTMP earlier this year and has partnered with the Hyundai Rotem Corporation for the manufacturing of the 65 new trains.

Local MP and Assistant Minister for Train Manufacturing and Regional Roads Bruce Saunders said that it was a landmark day for Maryborough and the broader Fraser Coast region.

“The first trains will complete manufacturing and commence testing in late 2026, with all 65 trains expected to be in service by 2032.” he said.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said that it was anticipated the train factory would officially open in about two years and would then start producing the trains that

will service Brisbane during the Olympic Games.

“This project will train a new generation of highly-skilled Queensland workers in train manufacturing, which will have long-term benefits to our economy, transport infrastructure and manufacturing industry.” he added.

Concerns have already been raised about accommodation for workers at the factory in a region already struggling to provide homes for it’s residents.

The REIQ’s Residential Vacancy Report revealed that vacancy rates were as tight as 0.1 per cent in Maryborough in 2021/22, hovering just above zero in a record low across the history of the report.

Hervey Bay is not much better, with rates consistently below 1%.

800 jobs, and building contractor John Holland Group has announced that over 300 construction positions would be created when work on the facility begins.

Even if local workers are used, out-of-towners will need to be sourced to fill all of the roles, and a proposed workers camp

nearby may house up to 200 visiting tradies.

The Department of Transport & Main Roads is quoted as saying “ while it was preferred to employ people from the Fraser Coast, the scale of the project and specialist skills required will mean that the workforce is also drawn from a wider area.”

REBEL FORMAL I see with some deep concerns the coverage given (in the media), which some students organised when they were not allowed to attend the school’s formal because they didn’t meet the agreed standards.

When students enter senior-schooling they sign an agreement to meet

certain conditions or they will be ineligible for extra curricula activities.

It is made quite clear that the formal is one of those.

So here we have a group of students who don’t follow the rules, and who are then given prominent publicity for their rebel behaviour.

Bypass in jeopardy as Feds cut spending CRAIG WINTER BRUCE Saunders says that Canberra politicians should get out of their comfort zones and ‘come and have a look at the Bruce Highway’ after reports that cuts to Federal spending may impact the Tiaro bypass plans.

The Government has put 50 infrastructure projects in doubt after a $33 billion budget blowout.

“We do not want to see more cuts made to our major arterial road under this Government.” he said.

And that’s even raised the ire of fellow party representatives.

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien recently made a Right to Information request to determine if the Tiaro Bypass project was now in jeopardy.

Data obtained from the Queensland State Government from that

request shows that much of the Bruce Highway through Wide Bay is only rated just two stars out of five for safety.

The Bruce Highway between Gympie and Maryborough is one of the deadliest sections of the national highway, with six fatalities occurring along this dangerous stretch this year.

“It’s now been more than two years since the former Coalition Government told the Palaszczuk Government to get on with the four lane Tiaro bypass, and Labor’s disinterest in the project threatens to jeopardise its delivery.” he said.

“The longer the project is delayed the more it will cost and the longer lives will be put at risk.

“The four lane Tiaro bypass is a vital, life saving project and I implore the Albanese and Palaszczuk Labor Governments to just get on with it.

Art winner really has ‘something to crow about’ 10

FROM recycled plastic monkeys to masterpieces recreated in denim offcuts, 2023’s Waste to Art competition entries were diverse and wonderful, with the winning piece edging out a highly competitive field.

The annual Waste to Art exhibition was officially opened on Friday 17 November at Gatakers Artspace in Maryborough with the highly anticipated winner announcements.

Hervey Bay Veterinarian and artist Lily Podger took out first prize in the Over 18s category with a splendid giant, stainlesssteel rooster.

‘Dress of distress’ which was made from old jeans.

Her mother Adriana then used the offcuts to create a replica of the 17th Century masterpiece, ‘The Milkmaid’ by Johannes Vermeer, which was awarded third in the Over 18s category.

The pair were thrilled to be sharing the spotlight together.

Hervey Bay resident George Rowland was the proud winner of the 8-11 year old category.

He crafted a colourful meadow from plastic soft drink bottles.

The work, titled ‘Something to Crow About’ was welded together from secondhand cutlery, machinery parts, wires and even unwanted veterinary tools.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour and Deputy Mayor Denis Chapman were on hand to announce the winners and were impressed with the quality and creativity of the entries.

“I enjoy fossicking at the Hervey Bay Tip Shop, which is where most of the cutlery comes from,” Ms Podger said.

“This competition is open to all budding artists and is a highlight of the local arts calendar,” Cr Seymour said.

“The rooster is laying a golden egg, which is actually a golf ball. It sparks a little confusion surrounding its gender identity.”

The annual competition and exhibition requires all works to be made from recycled or re-purposed items and materials sourced from Fraser Coast Regional Council Reuse Markets, op shops or second-hand shops on the Fraser Coast. It aims to change the way we look at waste.

The win wasn’t the first for Ms Podger, whose works are popular with visitors to the exhibition and also adorn her Scarness Veterinary Clinic.

For mother Adriana van Leeuween and daughter Julia Mahne, winning is in their jeans. Both received prizes for their works, which were both made from discarded denim.

Our historic School of Arts building

Maryborough is fortunate to have a number of interesting museums which tell the story of our city’s history.

A number of these museums are housed in historically significant buildings, such as the Maryborough School of Arts.

Visitors entering this historic building do so by passing underneath the bust of Minerva, as the Roman Goddess of Wisdom she is a very fitting companion for the building.

The fine structure, which looks across Kent Street to City Hall, was actually not the first School of Arts building.

The School of Arts movement started very early in the history of Maryborough with this substantial two storeyed rendered brick premises replacing the first Maryborough School of Arts building that consisted of a small brick structure.

By the mid-1880s it was clear that a larger and more substantial premises would be advantageous for the Maryborough organisation and the community.

Some of his other commissions include the Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand, the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the Fremantle Town Hall. His son, Percy Grainger, would go on to become a famous Australian composer and musician.

The museum is a must-see as much for the exhibits as to take in the old-world splendour of the book-lined library with its mezzanine level.

The reputation of this building was, and is, widespread; an article published in the Sydney Mail on 26 January 1895 referred to the Maryborough School of Arts as “the pride of every Maryborough citizen.

Fraser Coast Seed Library sprouts FRASER Coast residents and community groups will be able to access a “Plant to Plate” Seed Library to help grow their own gardens and then donate seeds back once their plants have grown.

Mayor George Seymour said Fraser Coast Libraries would establish the Seed Library with the support of a $50,000 grant from the Queensland Government through the State Library of Queensland.

Plant to Plate Seed Libraries will be established at all Fraser Coast library branches at Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Howard, Burrum Heads and Tiaro.

“Plant to Plate seeds will be organic, non-GMO and open-pollinated. Library members will be able to take seeds to grow and enjoy at home,” Cr Seymour said.

“Borrowers will be

encouraged to help us grow the Seed Library by harvesting seeds from mature plants and donating them back to the library to share with others in the community.

“The project will also involve the establishment of a feature garden in the grounds of the Howard Library and collaboration with the existing Butchulla Seasonal Garden at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery.

“We also hope to collaborate with community groups and incorporate activities such as videos, cooking and food-tasting workshops as part of the Plant to Plate Seed Library program.

“It’s all about building better communities together and shaping a healthy future for the Fraser Coast region.

“This project will encourage community

resilience and engagement at a critical time with the increasing cost of living pressures on families.”

Cr Seymour said details of how the Plant to Plate Seed Library would operate would be developed further in the coming months, with the new service expected to begin in early to mid-2024.

“More than a third of our population are Fraser Coast Libraries members who take advantage of the range of services on offer such as borrowing books, toys, DVDs, magazines and jigsaw puzzles, or attending one of our many adult’s and children’s programs,” he said.

“In recent years, eBooks and eAudiobooks have been growing in popularity at our local libraries, and the Seed Library will provide another fantastic new service for our local community.”

Major road resurfacing project gets underway ROADS right across the Fraser Coast will be given a new lease of life as part of a $1.6 million Council bitumen resealing program starting this month.

Deputy Mayor Denis Chapman said the program would cover 75 streets throughout the Fraser Coast, including in and around Maryborough and Hervey Bay, as well as in many smaller communities such as Howard, Pacific Haven, Yerra, Gootchie and Glenwood, to mention a few.

“Council is responsible for about 2700 kilometres of roads and footpaths throughout the region, with more than $40 million being put towards maintaining roads,

footpaths, bridges and drainage this financial year,” he said.

“These road resurfacing works form part of Council’s commitment to effectively manage and maintain our assets, ensuring our infrastructure stays stronger for longer.”

A bitumen reseal involves spraying a thin layer of bitumen over an existing road surface to protect the underlying road pavement from weather damage.

A stone aggregate is spread on top of the bitumen.

“Smoother and safer roads are just one benefit – the process can prolong the life of an existing

road by eight to 14 years, depending on the traffic volume,” Cr Chapman said.

“This type of preventative maintenance ensures we get the best efficiency and value for money from our road infrastructure.”

Council apologises for any inconvenience caused while the work is carried out, with residents in affected areas to be notified via a letter before the work starts.

$60 million Fraser Coast drug seizure rocks small community JAY FIELDING THE tiny locality of Gungaloon has hit the headlines again after a massive drug crop was uncovered by authorities.

About $60 million worth of marijuana was seized during a raid at a property in the hinterland hamlet, 20 minutes west of Maryborough with a population of 33, earlier this month.

More than 11,000 marijuana plants and 515kg of dried marijuana bud were found.

About $521,000 in cash, 90kg of marijuana, 245g of cocaine, 350g of ice, and 126g of MDMA (ecstasy) were also seized by detectives in raids connected to the operation.

Police arrested 10 people at the farm, as well as another man who attempted to flee but was tracked down nearby by the dog squad.

Seven more people were

arrested in subsequent raids across Brisbane, Moreton, Sunshine Coast and Logan.

In 2020, Gungaloon was in the news when authorities busted a massive illegal tobaccogrowing operation.

At the property, officers seized 428kg of tobacco plants. They also found an additional 195kg of tobacco leaf.

Detective Inspector Brad Phelps from the Drug and Serious Crime group said this month’s drug bust had disrupted a major criminal syndicate.

“It will be alleged that the Gungaloon farm has been operational for approximately 18 months and was producing several hundred kilograms of cannabis per week,” Det Insp Phelps said.

“We’ve seized a significant quantity of drugs, plants, cash, assets and equipment as a result of these raids,” he

said.

“The reality is that these dangerous drugs were destined for sale to some of the most vulnerable people within our state and beyond.

“Now they’re out of the market, and those allegedly responsible will be brought to justice.”

Among those arrested was a 22-year-old Boronia Heights man, who has been charged with drug offences including trafficking, supply and possession.

He has been remanded in custody and is expected to reappear at Richlands Magistrates Court in February.

A 43-year-old Inala man was charged with various drug offences including drug trafficking, production and supply.

Maryborough tops storm hot-spot list JAY FIELDING MARYBOROUGH has topped the list of the worst storm-damaged hotspots in Queensland over the past financial year.

The research comes with storm season upon us, and the Bureau of Meteorology warning Queenslanders they’re in for a wild ride this summer with severe weather, including not only bushfires but also thunderstorms, flooding and tropical cyclones predicted.

Suncorp’s data found that half of Queensland’s Top 10 storm battered suburbs were in Wide Bay. Suncorp Insurance analysed more than 8,559 weather-related home insurance claims across Queensland from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, to reveal the hardest hit suburbs.

Data was collected from Suncorp’s insurance network which includes

Suncorp Insurance, Apia, Bingle, AAMI and GIO.

The top 10 storm hotspots in Queensland were: 1. Maryborough 2. Cooloola Cove 3. Mackay 4. Toowoomba 5. Gympie 6. Gladstone 7. Bundaberg 8. Yeppoon 9. Hervey Bay 10. Highfields Suncorp Insurance disaster response executive manager Lilly Broodbank said that rain, followed by hail and flood, were the most common causes of damage to homes across Queensland.

“In December 2022, the Sunshine Coast experienced an intense and fast-moving hailstorm bringing down power lines with giant hail stones the size of five centimetres in diameter crashing down on Maryborough, Cooloola Cove and Gympie, which resulted in a large volume

of claims,” she said.

“In February this year, the state also experienced significant rain and hail, damaging homes in locations across SouthEast Queensland from the Gold Coast to Brisbane.

“As a result of these weather events, our customers experienced everything from water ingress, damaged roofs and flooding, and in some cases were displaced from their homes.

“Although some areas of the state, particularly Wide Bay, central Queensland and Toowoomba copped a battering, storms by their nature are unpredictable and can happen anywhere and anytime, so it’s vital to not be complacent and prepare your home now.”

Ms Broodbank acknowledged it could be difficult to prioritise things like home maintenance when times were tough.

“However, many of these tasks don’t cost or take long, and can be well worth the investment to strengthen the resilience of your biggest asset,” she said.

These include: • Securing and putting away loose items around backyards or balconies.

• Trimming trees and branches that could fall on to homes and cars.

• Cleaning gutters, downpipes and drains of leaves and debris.

• Parking vehicles under cover and away from trees or powerlines.

• Ensuring there’s no corrosion, loose fittings or rotting timber around properties.

• Inspecting roofs for damaged or loose tiles.

JAY FIELDING GETTING a feed from Rick’s Pies after a night of heavy drinking has been a rite of passage in Maryborough for 30 years.

But that is no more, now that Rick and Suzanne Hart have closed their beloved shop.

Rick’s Pies began life as a fish and chip shop but the Harts had to amend their business strategy when McDonald’s opened and sales fell.

As a pie shop, not only did it find success but also became a part of the city’s steeped history.

News of the closure saw many locals reminiscing about their late-night – or early-morning – experiences at the pie shop, which was close to the city’s clubs and pubs. “[I’m] grateful for the support so many wonderful people in Maryborough

The decision to close down came after a difficult period.

He said he began thinking about life after Rick’s Pies when he and Suzanne returned from holiday earlier this year.

“I can’t explain the feeling,” he said.

“All I knew is that I did not want to be here anymore. I have been struggling with the decision for months and months now.”

In a note to customers, the Harts thanked their loyal customers, their family, the pastors at their church and their landlords, Graham and Rhonda Richers.

“We are grateful to finish on a high, debt free and

Changed traffic conditions – Burgowan Road and Gympie Street intersection upgrade The Burgowan Road and Gympie Street intersection at Torbanlea is being upgraded as part of early works for the Queensland Government’s Queensland Train Manufacturing Program. The intersection upgrade is nearly complete, with finishing works scheduled to commence from mid-November.

Works will include: • installing a give way sign at Burgowan Road on the southbound carriageway at Gympie Street • installing line marking to create new through lanes and turning lanes.

Works will take up to three weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Work hours are Monday to Saturday from 6am and 6pm. Some night work may be required to complete activities such as asphalting and line marking.

Following the completion of the works, the operation of the intersection will change.

What to expect during the works Changed traffic conditions will be in place including reduced speed limits, presence of traffic control and temporary lane closures. Digital signs will be in place during and after the works to advise motorists of changed traffic conditions.

Support for Fraser Coast Australia Day events THONG throwing, community sports, free barbecues, live music and a World War I reenactment are among the activities planned at Fraser Coast Australia Day 2024 events in Maryborough, Poona and Hervey Bay. Cr James Hansen said the Poona Community Progress Association and the Rotary Club of Maryborough-Sunrise Inc had both applied for and would receive grants through Council’s Australia Day Events Fund.

“Australia Day is a day to reflect, respect and celebrate the Australian spirit and the best of this country – our mateship, our sense of community and our resilience,” he said.

“Through these grants, we assist local community groups put on events that bring us together to celebrate and acknowledge every Australian’s contribution to our

contemporary and dynamic nation.”

Events and Projects sponsorship from Council.

The Australia Day Event grants provided include:

“The $5000 sponsorship from Council will go towards three community events at the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum – a Christmas celebration, an antiques and handcrafts fair and an Australia Day celebration,” he said.

• Poona Community Progress Association, $1500. Australia Day event starts at 10am with a morning tea with lamingtons, damper and billy tea provided. Events throughout the day include thong throwing, indoor bowls, community cricket and tennis. A barbecue will be served at 1pm followed by live music and a poet entertaining the crowd until 6pm.

• The Rotary Club of Maryborough-Sunrise Inc, $600. Activities will include a free community breakfast, games such as thong throwing and threelegged races, billy tea and damper and a flag raising ceremony.

Cr Hansen said the Hervey Bay Historical Society Museum Association had also applied for and was successful in receiving a Community Celebration

“The Australia Day event will highlight old-time crafts and historic items and include a World War I reenactment with the 9th Battalion and 5th Battalion light horse units.”

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the Planning Institute of Australia’s 2024 state conference would be held on K’gari from 4 - 6 September, with about 200 to 300 planners from across Australia and New Zealand expected to attend.

“The conference is expected to cover a range of planning themes such as density, infrastructure and design, but is also likely to incorporate themes relevant to our region such as heritage planning, building reuse and urban revitalisation,” he said.

Smoke tests to detect sewerage network issues SMOKE testing will be conducted in Hervey Bay, Maryborough and Burrum Heads in early 2024 to help identify the sources of stormwater and groundwater leaking into the sewerage network.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor David Lee said Council regularly conducted inspection programs to identify and fix problems impacting the sewerage network.

“Leaks can allow groundwater to enter the sewerage system while illegal pipe connections can channel stormwater from roofs into the sewerage system,” he said.

“During storms, the amount of sewage heading to the treatment plant can be more than five times normal dry weather flows.

“That extra water has to be treated and that costs ratepayers money. It can cause the treatment plants to overload and have a negative impact on the environment.”

Cr Lee said a non-toxic, non-staining, odourless coloured smoke would be injected into the sewers as part of the inspection

program.

“As the smoke escapes from cracks in pipes or incorrectly installed stormwater drains, we can see faults that need fixing,” he said.

“Smoke may emerge from yards, roof gutters, pipes or street drains. It is also possible that smoke may appear inside a house if the drainage traps are dry.

“The smoke is not flammable and will not cause any harm to people, pets or plants.”

Cr Lee said that discovering properties with illegal connections would not necessarily mean fines would be issued.

“Our experience is that once made aware of issues, most property owners comply with the request to rectify problems,” he said.

Residents will be notified by mail of the timing of inspections in their area.

The inspection program will start in February 2024 and is due to be completed by April 2024.

Ancient mud teaches us the history of the area

LINDSAY TITMARSH

MOST times when ‘boaties’ venture out onto the sparkling waters of the Mary-Susan Estuary, they are out there to ‘catch something’.

Not so with me.

Although I have been too busy during the last few years, there was a time when I found time to get out, not to catch fish – just to explore the massive tidal area of mangroves and mud.

I just love to research what our rivers looked like during the last Ice Age.

Between the lower Mary and Susan Rivers, nestles the mostly non-tidal, 400acre Kangaroo Island.

A low, occasionally semitidal, Melaleuca swamp bisects the island from one side to the other.

Between that area, and a mangrove lined foreshore, is situated a large sand dune system which was big enough for the then owner, Charlie Schulz, to establish a small-crop farm on.

With sea levels then well over 100 metres lower than they are now, the lower Mary River was a deep and narrow freshwater stream situated many kilometres inland.

Where the swampy area exits into the Susan River, a large hardwood log protrudes out of the bank into the water. If that log had just recently washed beside the base of the steep bank, it would soon have floated away – not so.

was C 14 carbon dated at 2262 BP years of age.

This indicates that back then, it floated onto the flat, which was much lower, and has since been covered with river mud, until erosion re-exposed it.

BP (before present) is calculated from the year 1950, therefore the log is now 2335 years of age.

Research indicates that back in time, Kangaroo Island was two smaller formations bisected by a low lying flat, or maybe a steep sided valley.

As sea levels rose, the low area became tidal, resulting in it filling with tidal mud.

On the Susan River side of Tandora, a small gutter from the 1950’s has now naturally eroded into a large tidal creek.

has revealed a large prehistoric layer of mangroves which grew there when tidal levels were different from what they are today.

Although perfectly preserved by being covered with salty anerobic (oxygen free) mud, the remnants soon erode away when exposed

to the atmosphere.

A mangrove stump from there registered a C 14 date of 6404 years BP, 6477 years ago.

Sam, Hudson & Ruby looking for a home

From THE MARYBOROUGH ANIMAL REFUGE

HIYA, I’m Sam, an 8-yearold Staffordshire Bull Terrier. My little buddy is Hudson, a 6-year-old black and tan dachshund.

I have to say that we are a very handsome pair.

Our owner was unable to take us to the new place in another area and had to leave us here, very regretfully.

We would be a great addition to any home – good with men, women

and children, cats, toilettrained, good-natured, handsome (did I mention that?).

The downside is – and I am being very honest here – we must stay together! We are what the people around the Refuge call “a Bonded Pair”. We have been inseparable for 6 years, since little Hudson was a puppy and I was 2-yearsold. Our owners worked a lot, so we only had each other for company.

I don’t want to get slushy, but we absolutely adore each other. At

the moment we are in separate pens while we are in Quarantine, and it embarrasses me to confess that I howl a lot because I miss Hudson so much.

Hopefully, once we are out of Quarantine, we will be back together again in the same Refuge pen.

Now another thing – and I’m being straight-up again – I don’t always like other dogs that much, but I took to Hudson straight away.

It would break our hearts to be separated, especially

RUBY Hello - Ruby here again.

Yes, I was only in the paper a few weeks ago, but the person who is supposed to adopt me didn’t see it. So I’m giving it one last-ditch effort before Christmas.

My owners loved me very much and were heartbroken when the lifestyle village they moved to would not let me go with them because I am too big. After 7 years of being together, that was a huge wrench for all of us.

You will see that I let volunteers deck me out in my Christmas finery in an attempt to make me more irresistible. You may be able to see the reindeer hooves on my feet. I was very restrained while they were fitting those on my paws. Anything to be in a home by Christmas!

The great news is that someone who is very generous has donated my adoption fee to the Refuge. That means that the person who takes me home does not have to pay anything.

So, if you missed it last time, I will remind you that I am a 7-year-old

Harvest winds down for 2023

THE final countdown has begun, with Queensland’s 2023 sugarcane crush rapidly winding down across the state.

Bundaberg was first to cross the line, with Millaquin Mill tipping its final bin on 7 November, followed closely by the Isis and Maryborough districts the next day.

At the time of writing, the Northern and Burdekin regions had both cut and crushed more than 90% of their crops, with the central region just over 80% complete.

More than 25 million tonnes of a 29 million tonne crop have now been crushed, and, weather

permitting, the industry is on track to complete the harvest well before Christmas.

This is an improvement on last year, when wet weather, workforce shortages, and poor mill performance saw the crush extend into midJanuary for the first time ever.

Unfortunately, the earlier finish this year is also a result of last season’s late finish, as the crop had less time to grow and we had between one and two millions tonnes of cane less to cut.

Despite this, 2023 has generally been a good year for the industry.

Sugar prices have continued their recordbreaking climb, while sky-high fertiliser prices

have dropped back to more reasonable levels.

Good news for anglers leading up towards Christmas.

Mud Crabs are on the move around Kauri, Big Tuan and Maaroom Creeks.

There are still a few rattlers in amongst them, but the majority of crabs are quite full.

THIS WEEK'S BRAG BOARD First up is Kerry, she landed this 87cm dinosaur of a flathead at Coongul Creek.

Awesome fish and well don. The big girl was released successfully. Zoran had a great day landing this flathead. Haylie is all smiles with her grassy sweetlip. Ryan and Jordan hit the mighty Mary and she produced; these threadfin weighed in at 7.4 and 7.3kg. Mitchel loved the night fishing landing a nice grunter. Angus is loving fishing with dad, nice cod mate.

The whole of the Mary River system continues to produce the goods with reports of grunter, threadfin salmon and flathead all the way up to the barrage with herring, prawns or livies being the preferred bait.

And for the adrenalin junky, there’s plenty of bull sharks to keep you entertained.

Estuary cod, blackall, grassy sweetlip and moses perch have been in numbers throughout the Sandy Strait on the ledges and up the creeks, plus another positive note to these muggy days is that the mangrove jack are on fire.

Jacks have been reported throughout creeks and estuaries anywhere from

Burrum Heads to Poona mainly been taken on live baits, mullet strips or suspending lures.

Deep Creek has been fishing well for large jewies and grunter off the ledges and summer whiting and flathead working the flats on the making tide.

Golden trevally and queen fish are taking medium diving lures in the channel between the Bluff at the bottom of Fraser Island and Moon Point, and schoolie mackerel with the odd spotty are taking small metal slugs throughout the waters of Hervey Bay. Moon ledge and Sammie’s have been popular with catches of blueys, grassy sweetlip, blackall and cod and plenty of pelagic action in Platypus Bay with

some small black marlin, spanish mackerel, spotty mackerel and golden trevally taking large, medium to deep diving lures.

Burrum Heads continues to impress with mangrove jack, grunter and threadfin salmon, and the beautiful beach at Woodgate has seen some quality summer whiting, dart and silver trevally.

And lastly, don’t forget in those windy conditions we have the freshwater option.

Lenthalls Dam has been putting on a show with some catching and releasing 30 or more bass and barra in a session.

Surface lures seem to be doing the trick.

Well, look no further, because the Fraser Coast Council will release an interactive digital map on their website of the addresses of the Christmas light displays, which will be able to be used from early this December.

I can’t wait - especially for Christmas Street.

For those of you who do not know or need a bit of a recap, Christmas Street is an event judged by the Mayor to decide which street contains the most sparkly and festive displays based on the effort that residents have put into decorating their houses.

Certainly the peak of the Fraser Coast Christmas lights festivities, it is spectacular to see.

Mitsubishi Triton pricing announced MITSUBISHI Motors has announced that the New-Gen Triton Light Commercial Vehicle will be priced from $43,690 in Australia, ahead of its market launch in February 2024.

“New-Gen Triton presents another step-change for the Mitsubishi Motors product portfolio,” said MMAL CEO, Shaun Westcott.

“Being a core market for the Mitsubishi Motors brand, and with Triton being a core model for Australia, the importance of this vehicle cannot be overstated, and we are very proud to have played a key role in its development.

“The New-Gen Mitsubishi Triton takes the Triton’s essence – reliability, capability, dependability – and significantly enhances them, while adding latest-generation safety technologies, more power and torque, more space, more load carrying capacity and a truly distinctive style.

“Following the success of the new Outlander, New-Gen Triton is another huge step forward for

Mitsubishi,” he said.

“I personally cannot wait to drive it.”

New-Gen Triton boasts a new, Mitsubishi-designed and developed 2.4-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine.

This power unit employs ‘twin stage’ turbocharging – two turbochargers, one small for fast response at low revs, and a larger turbo to fortify the top end – to develop 150kW of power at 3500rpm, with a 470Nm peak torque figure that’s available from just 1500rpm to 2750rpm.

The new engine and gearbox combination is designed to produce exceptional response and low-rev pulling power and a linear torque delivery throughout the rev range, while also improving efficiency over the previous generation.

A new engine Auto Stop & Go System further supports efficiency.

Both 4 x 2 and 4 x 4 drivetrains will be available with an updated six- speed automatic transmission.

Track widths have grown by 6 mm (front) and 23 mm (rear), although total vehicle width remains the same at 1890 mm.

This system works in tandem with the 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder petrol engine, delivering 190 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque in conjunction with a refined nine-speed auto and 4MATIC all-wheel traction.

The GLC 300 Coupé also has an overboost function capable of delivering an extra 17 kW and 200 Nm for a short period.

This can be repeated successively, within defined temp limits.

The ISG supports the combustion engine especially at low engine speeds and in combination with the turbocharger, delivers outstanding responsiveness. The 48volt on-board electrical system supports hybrid functions such as coasting, boosting and energy recovery, resulting in increased efficiency.

League greats tee-off successful charity day GLEN PORTEOUS

RUGBY LEAGUE: Threatening rain clouds could not dampen the success of the Fraser Coast Family of League Golf Day to help raise money for the grassroots league community.

Boasting a star-studded line-up of former rugby league state and international players, the popular golf day provided entertainment both on and off the course.

After a long day of golf, the Maryborough clubhouse hosted Gary Larson, Chris Close, Ben Ikin and Mark Graham who gave the many supporters an entertaining time telling stories about their playing days.

It was however a tight finish with the overall competition with team Maryborough Glass & Aluminium and team

Carriers Arms Hotel Motel declared joint winners for the inaugural Jeff Bacchi Memorial Shield.

Former New Zealand great, Mark Graham said it was wonderful to see so many people come out and support the community fundraiser. “Everybody here has enjoyed themselves and as human beings, its about helping each other out,” he said.

Fraser Coast Family of League acting-president Kev Embrey said “It was unreal to get so many supporters of this community charity and former league legends to help make a great day for everyone,”

those in need in the rugby league community and help to access financial, social and emotional support.

The foundation cares for the grassroots level community members who help to keep the game playing. Embrey said he was thankful for all of the sponsorship and support received and already there are talks about possibly having a bowls and another golf day in 2024.

Embrey said the shield was named after Jeff Bacchi who dedicated a lot of time and energy towards the community organisation.

INDOOR HOCKEY: The Maryborough Super Sixes Womens Indoor Hockey team sealed a narrow 4-3 victory over South Brisbane Vipers recently to make it a trifecta of state championships for the talented squad.

GLEN PORTEOUS SKATEBOARDING: Hilltop Skate Boarding indoor centre has stepped up for local skaters to ‘Drop-In’ and try out the new facility.

Former international skateboarder Dave Evans wanted to give a new lease of life to the former Bell Hilltop Squash Courts and give back to the local community with two of the four former squash courts converted into indoor skate ramps.

“This is important for kids to be active and another venue for them to go skateboarding,” he said.

Evans has a professional skateboarding history that included going to the United Sates of America.

He has set up a proshop and there is an equipment hire facility and plans for more development.

“We are affiliated with the Australian Skating Federation and possibly putting up skating

murals around the centre,” he said.

Fraser Coast Councilors Paul Truscott and Daniel Sanderson were on hand to watch the skateboarders using the half-pipe.

“This is fantastic and wonderful for the youth to get involved,” Cr Truscott said.

“It’s great to be provided for the youth and activate this building with the vision Evans has shown,” Cr Sanderson said.

Building owners Steve and Bri Peters thought it was great what Evans was doing with it and encouraging for the children to utilise.

The indoor skateboard centre is open Wednesday to Sunday from 3.30pm to late with private bookings and coaching sessions and the possibility of extended hours over the school holidays.

It is also available for rollerblades and rollerskates.

The Maryborough team went through the championship undefeated, however they almost came unstuck in the exciting final match.

Under the skilled guidance of coach Shane Palmer and Manager Julie Staples, the Maryborough Womens Indoor Hockey team were able to claim another state championship victory.

While storm clouds gathered outside the Maryborough Indoor Hockey complex, South Brisbane Vipers however were keen to rain on the Maryborough Women’s team opportunity to make it a championship three-peat performance.

Both teams opened the score in the first quarter with one goal apiece.

Maryborough took the lead into the half-time break 2-1 with another goal in the second quarter.

The Vipers however took the lead in the third quarter with two goals to give them a 3-2 lead however a late short corner to Maryborough made it 3 -all heading into the final quarter.

Maryborough played the fourth quarter with patient experience and some true-grit and determination to seal the game 4-3 from another well executed short corner.

Maryborough coach Shane Palmer had strong praise for the team keeping its focus during the championship and final.

“With our game plan and structure and if we stuck to it we knew we would win.

Vipers took control of the third quarter away from us but the team rallied and came back in the

fourth to win,” Palmer said.

He also said Maryborough Indoor Hockey success was gained through hard work and multiple commitments.

“Team Manager Julie Staples was just great with the work she did and from the grass roots level, Maryborough has good coaching and we work on the rules, skills and the basics of the game.”
