The ten year old St. Mary’s student has recently upgraded his speedway kart to a sedan, and is reaping the rewards of practice and dedication.

As soon as he was allowed to race sedans at the age of ten, Connor took to the oval in his new car and has improved his results with every race.

Connor’s racing career started at the age of seven when his father Anthony - also a speedway racer - surprised him with a racing kart as a gift whilst visiting the local Maryborough track.

On November 28, young drivers from around the country will descend on Lismore in NSW to compete at the largest ever junior race meeting, and Connor will be the only driver representing Maryborough.

He quickly dominated with wins

His current form on the dirt

means he has a great chance of bringing home a trophy and parents Jen and Anthony are happy to support him.

“Connor’s always keen to represent Maryborough” Anthony said.

“He’s proud of where he’s from and talks up his hometown everywhere he goes.”

Some of Connor’s inspiration for racing comes from champion sprintcar driver James McFadden who he had the chance to meet earlier this year when McFadden won at the

The number 17 on Connor’s sedan is a reflection of James’ own, and he plans on racing the same class of sprintcar as him in the future.

Success in motorsport brings sponsors, and the young champion has attracted strong support from local businesses as well as Mayor George Seymour who not only supports Connor with sponsorship, but is a regular pit crew member at Maryborough race meetings.

Celtic Christmas first touring show in nine months THE Brolga Theatre in Maryborough will host its first live touring stage show in nine months in December.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said COVID-19 had kept arts and live performance venues shuttered for months so it was fantastic to be able to welcome back patrons for a range of upcoming events at the Brolga Theatre.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had an enormous economic and social impact on the community, and the arts and live performance industry has been particularly hard hit,” he said.

“The Brolga Theatre has recently welcomed back ‘Morning Melodies’ performances and a show by local theatre company Z-PAC Theatre, and it’s wonderful that the venue will now also host its first touring show since ‘The Sapphires’ in March.”

‘A Celtic Christmas by A Taste of Ireland’ is a “whirlwind of traditional Irish music and dance” featuring a “powerhouse mix of heartfelt ballads, your favourite carols, and traditional tunes that tell the timeless romantic story of two star crossed lovers as they dance under

the mistletoe”.

The show is being held at the Brolga Theatre on Tuesday 8 December at 7.30pm with tickets ranging from $59.90 for children under 12 to $69.90 for adults, with concessions available for Friends of the Brolga, pensioners, seniors and students, and group bookings.

Cr Seymour said audience numbers would be limited with physical distancing measures in place such as seating patrons in ‘bubbles’ with space between groups as part of the Theater’s COVID safe plan.

“Due to COVID restrictions, tickets cannot be sold online, with patrons asked to contact the Box Office on 4122 6060 to purchase tickets.

All patrons who want to sit together must buy their tickets at the same time as a group booking,” he said.

The dream for a modern entertainment venue for the region started in 1989, around the same time performers were bypassing Maryborough due to poor acoustics at City Hall.

Following a huge community fundraising effort of $1million and with contributions from Council and the State and Federal Governments, a further $10 million dollars was raised to construct the theatre.

“It’s time to dust of the fairy lights and bring out the decorations to put your Christmas lights display together,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

“The addresses will be displayed on an on-line map so people can create a Christmas lights trail and visit as many as possible.”

Milestone reached for RSL

A UNIFIED decision on Sunday to separate the commercial arm of the Maryborough RSL Sub Branch has been seen as an overwhelming vote of confidence in president Paul Coleman and a new sub branch board elected in February.

Mr Coleman said he hoped the new services and citizens memorial club would be in place by April.

The sub branch would move into premises it owned next door, formerly occupied by Radio Rentals.

“That will allow the sub branch to focus on veteran welfare and commemoration activities.

“At present about 70 to 80 per cent of the sub branch’s time is taken up with trying to run the club.”

Pending approval of the

restructure by the annual meeting in February and other authorities, the sub branch board would appoint five club board members from citizens who had skills in accounting, business management and marketing.

Two other members would be appointed from the sub branch.

“The appointments in the first instance would be by the sub branch board but within 12 months there would be an election in which all club members would be entitled to vote.”

Almost 60 sub branch members voted solidly in favour of the restructure proposed by Mr Coleman’s board, the majority of whom were elected in February following years of turbulent management and crumbling finances.

Only one vote was recorded against the three motions.

Mr Coleman said the new board had taken action to stabilise finances and was now in a “fairly solid position”, even after subtracting $180,000 it had been given for Jobkeeper payments during the pandemic shutdown.

Members hailed the professional and informative tone of the meeting, saying it showed restored confidence.

“The meeting was a show of confidence and had a sense of unity that has not been there for a long time,” said former board member Shaun Kenny.

Mr Coleman said other sub branches had been investigated by the new board to determine the best structure.

For someone who no longer has kids at home and who’s extended family is dwindling with time, for me it’s lost a lot of it’s meaning.

The recent news of X-Boxes and Playstations doubling in price “because of the Christmas demand” is a very good example of why Christmas is fading.

AFTER the great success of “Moments in Time Volume 1, a Pictorial History of Hervey Bay and Surrounds, 1890 to 2018” the logical step was Vol 2 to include all of the Fraser Coast.

Accordingly, the seven major museums of the Fraser Coast have contributed many unique and never before published photos and stories which trace our photographic history from 1867 to 2020.

The Book has been produced by the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum with some financial assistance from our Mayor George Seymour.

It’s not Christmas that’s made the price skyrocket, it’s greed. It’s you and me.

Don’t blame the holiday for it.

There is a great joy to Christmas when you have kids. They get excited about putting up the tree, about Santa Claus and receiving gifts.

Christmas means less to us, and we’re happy just to relax for a while with a couple of friends and use it as an excuse to eat a great meal and fall asleep in our recliners.

There is a great commercial benefit for all businesses from Christmas however, and that’s the ability to put some cash away that will help pay our bills and staff during the quieter periods.

Business owners need to make the most of the holiday while they can, and this in turn creates the perpetual cycle of Christmas versus Business hype and sales.

We can all be fair about it however.

If you’re in business, instead of gouging your customers for more money, give them a little something extra.

It’s a time when grandparents can make the annual pilgrimage to catch up with the little ones and share the joy.

Make them feel like you’re in tune with the festivities and not just making as much money out of it as you possibly can.

Children really do make the season.

The benefits of helping people feel good about your business will come back to tenfold once they get over the stress.

But when we get older, it becomes more about reflection and appreciation.

My wife is a great tree decorator, and while I can live without it, I have to admit that walking into our home to see a beautifully presented tree celebrating the season is a warming and uplifting thing.

Fraser Coast Regional Council is of course running their annual Christmas Lights competition which brightens the streets.

We both really enjoy getting around them all and seeing the effort families put into their displays.

This is what the spirit is about. It doesn’t need to be about money or presents, it can be a time where simple things remind you how good life can be.

So with or without family, this Christmas will be a relaxed reminder of how fortunate we are to live here on the Fraser Coast.

Tinana overtaking lanes project work to start

FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Llew O’Brien has welcomed news that work will start on the long-overdue Tinana Overtaking Lane project this week, after the Labor State Government dragged its heels on the fully Commonwealth-funded project.

“The Coalition Government announced it would fully fund the $13.3 million Tinana overtaking lanes project in January 2018, and

I am pleased the State Department of Transport and Main Roads will now finally be able to get on with the job after a lengthy delay,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The new northbound and southbound dual overtaking lanes will allow drivers to overtake slow-moving vehicles safely, improving traffic flow, and a wire rope safety barrier system will also be installed between the overtaking lanes to reduce the chance of head-on collisions.

“Just like the Bells Bridge intersection, these are significant safety upgrades which were stalled under the Queensland Labor Government, and should have been completed by now.”

“The works involve the construction of north and southbound overtaking lanes along the Bruce Highway between the Tinana Interchange and Central Road, and realigning the northbound entry and southbound exit ramps

at Iindah Road,” he said.

“The Department of Transport and Main Roads indicated works are expected to take about 10 months to complete, weather permitting, and I hope this timeframe will be met.

“Road safety is a top priority for me and the Morrison Government, and these overtaking lanes will not only improve the speed and efficiency of the highway but increase safety for all motorists.”

Steady flow of support for skip to the loo

A STEADY flow of support from citizens and businesses is gradually filling up the cistern for the first flush of the revamped Divine Dunnies in the Maryborough City Hall toilets beside the town hall green.

Funds in the public campaign to raise $25,000 have passed the halfway mark. Another $53,400 has been donated from councillor discretionary funds for the creative venture, expected to cost about $85,000.

The Divine Dunnies committee operates under the banner of the Maryborough City Progress Association.

Chair Nancy Bates said the committee hoped to attract more donations before the end of the month and take a break

over the Christmas season.

“We will be looking at a start in February at the earliest,” she said. “We still have a bit to go with fundraising and design approvals.”

A surprise $1000 boost came from the Carriers Carers group that raises money for local causes through hotel bingo sessions.

The Carers donation was accepted by Carmel Murdoch, who will be ensuring the revamped toilets have fresh flowers and improved amenities for parents with young children.

Carers leader Julie said her group was keen to support the campaign to turn the current dowdy toilet precinct into an

attractive comfort stop for residents with tourism appeal.

“We like to give money to causes where we know the money will stay in Maryborough,” she said.

Other major donations of $3000 have been received from the Maryborough Quota Club and Wade Sawmill with $1000 coming from Costigans Good Price Pharmacy Warehouse.

Mr Melksham left school at a young age to work on his stepfather’s farm, and later taught himself to read and write well enough to get a pilot licence.

The colourful character got his start in the industry when he salvaged a boat that had sunk in the Mary River in his home town of Maryborough.

By the early 70s, it included a handful of cabins. Today Eurong Beach Resort has 108 rooms, a 200-seat restaurant, bar, grocery store and other facilities.

In 1982, Mr Melksham began operating a barge service to the island.

After refurbishing the boat, which could hold eight passengers, he started a business ferrying people to Fraser in 1959.

“His perseverance was legendary,” partner Angela Burger said.

Until 1960, the Queensland Government controlled virtually all of Fraser, at the time a state forest, through its forestry department.

“When a cyclone blew in on Fraser in February 1971 with little warning, Sid had just tacked new roofing iron on to a second hand building he had erected.

through pouring rain and high wind.”

By the time he retired in 2002, Ms Burger, said he had five vehicle and passenger ferry companies transferring people to the island and 40 tour buses.

Kingfisher Bay Resort bought his Fraser Island businesses for a reported $35 million.

After retiring, he bought Alan Bond’s former yacht, Southern Cross II, used as the headquarters for Australia’s team in the legendary 1983 America’s Cup. He and Ms Burger, a Walkey Award-winning journalist who wrote his biography, then cruised the Americas for three years before settling on the Gold Coast.

Tributes have flowed for Mr Melksham following his death last Friday.

Former staff have shared memories of a happy, laid-back boss, while locals have paid tribute to Mr Melksham as a tourism trailblazer.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor James Hansen said planning for the project, which will also include a new set down area, started after community requests for toilet facilities in the Aldershot recreational reserve.

“I am excited Council is able to provide these much needed amenities in Aldershot,” he said.

“The new works will allow more families to

use the existing play equipment and explore the surrounding nature reserve.”

The $106,241 project will take about four weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Cr Hansen said new toilets were not the only upgrades happening in his division before the end of the year.

“Council is also upgrading play equipment at Yengarie Community Hall and Wook-koo Park at Oakhurst at a cost of $70,700,” he said.

“The projects are part of Council’s $8.1 million allocation for parks, playgrounds and sporting fields in this year’s budget to ensure we have a

safe, healthy and active community.”

The new equipment at the two parks will each feature multiple slides, a swing set and a four-way rocker, with installation to begin on 1 December and be completed in two weeks.

The existing play equipment will be removed while the new equipment is being installed.

Remembrance Day 2020 CRAIG WINTER MARYBOROUGH’S QCWA is usually involved in the traditional Remembrance Day wreath laying ceremony, however due to COVID this year they decided to create their own tribute.

Remembrance Day events right across the country were either downgraded, limited or cancelled, so many regions had to come up with their own way of remembering the sacrifices made by our soldiers to bring peace to the world.

The QCWA decided to build two beautiful displays from recycled plastic bottles, plastic bottle tops and wooden pallets.

ON HIS father’s retirement as Deputy Chief in 1969, a young lad who had been born and bred at the Maryborough Fire Station moved out with his family, but has never forgotten the links he shares with one of Australia’s pioneering Brigades.

Trevor McTernan’s father Allen was a firefighter for over 45 years and witnessed incredible changes in both equipment and techniques in fighting fires, from horse drawn appliances to the state of the art equipment of the time.

When the McTernans left, Mr Brian Walters was appointed as Deputy Chief and subsequently his family has also maintained a connection with the Brigade.

Trevor remembers his life at the station with joy.

“I remember as a child that when the engine turned out to a fire I could be often seen in ‘hot pursuit’ on my bicycle following the fire engine down the street.” he said.

While he adds that the business of firefighting and fire prevention is very serious, there are also many light-hearted sides.

“I remember the firemen doing some hose drills one Sunday afternoon and my

pouring buckets of water on them from the upstairs balcony. I was rewarded by being sprayed by the fire hose...my father was not home at the time.”

Trevor originally wrote the history of the Maryborough Fire Brigade in 1976 as part of a project he was working on for Scouting.

“I then re-wrote the history in 1984 to mark the Centenary of the Maryborough Fire Brigade Board.” he said.

Timed along with news of the station’s refurbishment and expansion, he is now seeking stories and photos to be included in an updated and far more thorough documentation of the local service’s histry.

“This third writing will be more comprehensive and provide detailed information for the researcher as well as personal stories for local families.

“I intend to cover the period from the 1863 to1883 and outline the many attempts and events that led to the initial formation.

“The second part will cover the period until 25 June 1990 when the Fire Brigade Board was abolished, and the Brigade was absorbed into the newly created Queensland Fire Services.

It is Trevor’s intention

that this work will fill the gaps for this period in the brigade history and to form the foundation for anyone else who wishes to write the history from that point.

Trevor said “Prior to 1990 each regional Fire Brigade in Queensland (except Childers which was managed by its members) was under the administration of its local Board. This Board comprised representation from State and Local Government, Insurance Companies and the Chief Officer. The Williams family were stalwarts of this Board and three generations served as Secretary.

“The Maryborough Brigade has enjoyed a well-deserved reputation for its efficiency and progressiveness throughout its history.

“This reputation is a result of an outstanding Board which ensured the effective management and financial control of the Brigade, a long list of chief officers who were both highly professional and forward looking to ensure the equipment and training was first rate and to the officers and men who went to work every day ready to put “ wet stuff on the red stuff” and serve the citizens of Maryborough. I am very proud of my connection with the Brigade and it is a privilege to write its

The Brigade is a family affair for many Maryborough families, the Hinchen family, the Walters family, the Thomas Family, the Ruhle Family, The Dawson family, the Gick family, and the Whiltshire family to mention but a few.

“Every family where a member has “turned out” to a fire is part of this proud history and this should be recognised.

Therefore, the purpose of this book is many fold. To record the development of the brigade and outline some of the major fires.

To be part of the recorded history of Maryborough and be a reference for others to research.

“Lastly, and possibly most importantly to be a pictorial history so family members can regognize their own forebears and to have their family contribution acknowledged as part the Brigade’s history.” he added.

The citizens of Maryborough had tried to establish a fire brigade from the early 1860’s and despite many serious and promising efforts, no brigade was formed.

This was despite several relatively serious fires in that time including a few hotels being burnt down.

The most serious fire occurred on the morning of 3 Feb 1876 when

12 businesses in the CBD were destroyed.

The damage cost was estimated to be not less than 20,000 pounds with less than half the premises covered by insurance.

As was reported in the Chronicle of 3 Feb 1876: ...it seemed that the whole of Maryborough of was in flames. The utter helplessness of the bystanders owing to the absence of any organised means for either extinguishing or confining the flames was very striking. Surely Maryborough will not require any further ‘Viand yet more grievous warnings to cause the citizens to at once provide the machinery, moral and material, for the coping of such calamities. Let the Corporation (City Council) at once vote the nucleus of a fund for providing at least two effective fire engines...”

From that shaky

beginning, the Brigade was eventually formed and flourished and has established an enviable number of firsts.

When the fire station was built in 1888 (to the rear of the City Hall in Adelaide Street), it was the first brick and stone fire station north of Sydney, the first steam fire engine was called “Progress” and was the first to cost more than five hundred pounds, it was the first regional fire brigade in Queensland to have two-way radio and first to use “normal air´ breathing apparatus to mention but a few.

80g butter 4 large brown onions, sliced into rings 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 teaspoons plain flour 6 cups beef stock 1/ cup dry red wine 2 1 bouquet garni sachet Salt & freshly ground black pepper 30cm French stick cut crossways into slices 1 cup finely shredded Gruyere cheese Heat the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Add the onions and garlic, and cook, stirring, for 10 minutes or until the onions are soft and light golden.

CONSTRUCTION is due to begin on a 180room aged care facility at Tinana.

Remove bouquet garni. Taste and season with salt and pepper.

The project is at the corner of Gympie and Iindah Rds, opposite Tinana State School.

Preheat grill on high. Place baguette slices on a baking tray.

Add the flour and cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until flour bubbles and comes away from the side of the pan.

Add the stock, wine and bouquet garni. Bring to the boil over medium-high heat.

Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes or until soup thickens slightly.

Simple actions can make a big difference to food safety EACH year in Australia there are at least 4.1 million cases of gastroenteritis as a result of eating contaminated food.

During Australian Food Safety Week (November 14–21, 2020), Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service Director of Public Health Dr Niall Conroy would like to remind the community of the importance of reporting and testing to confirm food-borne illness.

Early intervention helps to identify potential outbreaks and laboratory analysis helps identify the source of infection or contamination, which may help prevent further cases of illness.

“It seems really simple, but food poisoning can make you seriously ill, and can be fatal in some cases,” Dr Conroy said.

“Food-borne illnesses vary in severity. Many people might have diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps or a fever. Many recover within a

few days.

“Knowing how to prepare and cook food properly ensures that food does not become contaminated, and makes sure that harmful organisms are killed, or that their growth is slowed or stopped.”

Dr Conroy said anyone who suspected they had food poisoning should seek medical attention and request a sample be collected.

“It’s really important that you get a sample when food poisoning occurs so we can identify the cause,” he said.

“Unfortunately, many instances of food-borne illness go unreported because when people think they’ve become sick from eating out, they tend to just shrug it off. “But if that happens, then our public health teams don’t know about clusters and can’t take action to protect the community.”

Dr Conroy said if two or more cases of a similar illness were experienced

after eating a common food or meal, people should notify the Wide Bay Public Health Unit on 4303 7500 (Bundaberg) or 4184 1800 (Hervey Bay).

General food safety tips: • Thaw food in the refrigerator or microwave • Uncooked meats should be kept covered and separated from cooked foods and readyto-eat foods to avoid cross-contamination • Do not refreeze food once it has been thawed • Make sure all food used is fresh and within the use by date • Cook all meat, chicken and eggs thoroughly • Make sure hot foods are hot (above 60°C) • Make sure cold foods are cold (below 5°C) • Cool left over food in small containers in the fridge. Food should be cooled from 60°C to 21°C within 2 hours and from 21°C to 5°C within a further 4 hours.

Landmark case to lift aged care wages by 25 percent THE Health Services Union will today launch a landmark work value case in the Fair Work Commission to lift wages for the aged care workforce by 25 per cent.

If the case succeeds, over 200,000 personal carers, activities officers, catering, cleaning, and administration workers would see their pay rise by at least five dollars an hour.

The starting rate for a personal carer is currently $21.96 per hour, and the average carer retires with $18,000 in superannuation.

If the HSU claim succeeds a qualified personal carer

would see their wages increase from $23.09 to $28.86 an hour.

“Aged care workers are skilled. They provide care and support to our most vulnerable, to residents enduring episodes of sadness and at times anger.

“They should be recognised and paid for their skills.

“This pay rise is an issue of justice, but it also goes to the sustainability of the system. Four in ten aged care workers intend to leave the sector within the next five years, because they are at breaking point.

“A workforce crisis is

coming unless we see a significant boost to pay.

“The Federal Government cannot keep hiding behind the Aged Care Royal Commission. We need action immediately.

“The best thing the Commonwealth government can do is support this pay rise for the long-suffering aged care workforce.”

Refuge volunteers essential It’s not easy being green THE Maryborough and District Animal Refuge relies heavily on their volunteer force. It is the dedication of volunteers that maintains the day to day onsite tasks. They are without a doubt, the spine of the establishment.

Basically...no volunteers, no Animal Refuge! The Refuge cannot operate on a successful level without these amazing people helping them on a daily basis.

With an early start of 7:00am Mon – Sun for the cleaning shift, volunteering at the Refuge can present its challenges and certain tasks may not be suited to everyone.

At times it can be messy, smelly and noisy! During the cooler months, the chilly temperatures and cold water hoses can be very undesirable to the hands and feet!

During the hot summer months, it’s all about staying hydrated, being sun smart and keeping the animals cool. Yet, their dedicated troopers continue to show up and keep their sense of humour intact. All that aside... the animal interactions, the cuddles, the smooches and seeing those adorable faces looking up at you, eyes full of hope and love, is a humbling experience and certainly puts life into perspective.

The role of a volunteer at the Refuge can take on many forms. Each morning there is an allocated cleaning crew for each of the Cat and Dog Boarding and Refuge areas, which includes cleaning pens, litter trays, drains, food/water bowls and bedding. Some of these volunteers continue on throughout the morning and may assist with cat cuddling/enrichment, dog exercise/enrichment/ walking, lawn and yard maintenance, laundry, dropping off recycled cans and bottles at the depot, transportation of animals to the Veterinary Clinic or Grooming Salon, collection of surrendered animals in surrounding areas (within 100km radius) and general

onsite maintenance and repairs. Where available, afternoon walkers may come in to spend time with the dogs before their PM meal and settle in for the evening.

Offsite, there are volunteers who assist with the collection of food from the donation bins located out the front of the Fresh and Save, Coles and Woolworths stores in Maryborough. There are also volunteers who play a part in fundraising events and the collection of donation money boxes that a number of local businesses have kindly offered to store on their customer counter.

Although this brief insight provides a general understanding of how much their volunteers mean to the Refuge, it is the behaviour of the animals and positive responses to their human friends that truly reflects the importance and value of the volunteers.

When asked why they chose to volunteer at the Animal Refuge, a few of the volunteers replied as follows: “I started volunteering at the Refuge purely because of my love for animals and wanting to give back to my local community.

My favourite part by far is how happy and excited the dogs are when I arrive and also the amount of love and trust they have to share.

It’s the highlight of my week and I hope I get to continue volunteering and being surrounded by the

goodest of doggos until I’m old and grey.”

KERMIT the frog, plaintively sings, “It’s not easy being green.”

And conservationists certainly would agree with him!

However, it is not a problem that Kermit shares with many other frogs because most frogs are NOT green.

Many local frog species are mottled and warty like cane toads. In fact, one group of native frogs have the common name of “toadlet”.

The frog pictured, the northern banjo frog or pobblebonk, (Limnodynastes terrareginae) might easily be mistaken for a cane toad.

So what distinguishes a toad from a native frog?

An adult cane toad can get bigger than 100 mm body length. The northern banjo frog only gets to 80 mm long. A warty amphibian the size of a saucer will be a toad!

The real threat of toads is the creamy white bufotoxin excreted when the toad is attacked and eaten.

Conservationists are seeking to educate native wildlife to the danger of toads by feeding them sausage meat spiked with some toad poison.

Eating the sausage makes the animal sick but does not kill it.

Insurers and builders joining forces to improve Australian homes THE Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) and the Master Builders Association (MBA) are uniting to develop proposals that will help strengthen homes and communities against natural disasters.

The industry groups have heeded key findings from the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements and will host a series of roundtable discussions to create a pathway towards national policies that improve property resilience, building standards and land-use planning.

The Building Stronger Homes Roundtable will enable builders and insurers to work together, harnessing industry insights from both insurance data and builders experience, to help map actions that can improve the resilience and insurability of existing and future Australian homes.

The final report of the Royal Commission recognised the importance of mitigation and resilience, better building standards and land-use planning in protecting properties and

communities from natural disasters.

It recommended the establishment of a national body to champion making Australia more resilient to natural disasters, focusing on reducing longterm disaster risk and harmonising approaches.

It also recommended mandatory consideration of natural disaster risk in land-use planning decisions and stronger building standards.

This is natural organic gardening at its simplest and best.

Preparing a vegetable garden of this sort is extremely attractive for those sites that have poor soil or invasive weeds.

It’s also a great way to build a garden for those that can’t, or don’t want to, dig a good size vegetable garden!

Follow the natural gardening no dig diagram below, but first thing of course is to choose the site. Make sure it is roughly level and ideally most of the area gets at least 5 hours of sun a day.

If it’s not as level as you’d like it, roughly smooth out the humps and bumps, then fill the gaps and any lower edges with soil, sand or whatever organic material is at hand, such as bark, leaves, twigs, washed seaweed, paper, jute, wool carpet or similar. As this rots down, you will need to add more compost to these low areas and gradually build them up.

If the ground is on too much of a slope, build some terraces for easy maintenance.

When preparing soil for your vegetable garden and it is over lawn or weeds, you can mow the area to ground level and build the garden on top, or you can leave the vegetation to decay underneath in time — as long as you cut out light to kill off the grass and weeds underneath.

If you are building a vegetable garden on a hard surface, such as dry clay, an old stony yard or driveway, put down a cushioning organic layer first (as above; bark, leaves or other dried carbon material).

Here’s a guide following natural gardening basics. It is only a guide remember, and your circumstances may be such that making a vegetable garden exactly the same would be difficult.

You want an easy to build veggie plot, in fact any plot, so don’t go blowing a gasket trying to find this and that, or putting this on top of that.

It’s worth reading about Lasagna Gardening to show you how to throw out the manual for building a vegetable garden.

But back to the main guidelines: Begin with a newspaper layer of at least 5 pages — or 20 or so pages if you like (or packing, wrapping paper, cardboard, sacking, natural carpet etc) to at least 5mm (¼ inch) thick.

Give it a good soak of water.

If you have those really tenacious, weedy dudes such as onion weed, couch or buffalo grass, docks, convolvulus, thistle, bindweed, ivy and other nasties, definitely put down a strong first layer such as well overlapping cardboard or at least 20 plus layers of newspaper.

It helps to surround the garden with some sort of border material. This can be bricks, logs, planks or rocks and can be 20-25cm high (8-10 inches) or more.

A raised border contains the organic material within, discourages invasion of surrounding lawn or weeds, deters various people and critters, and means less back-bending.

Lay down a layer of pads of lucerne hay (alfalfa) leaving no gaps, to a height of 10cm (4 inches).

Layer some good organic fertilizer on top to a height of roughly 20mm (1 inch).

This can be just about any sort of good quality

material like well rotted chicken, horse, cow or sheep manure. If you don’t have this sort of material available, sprinkle a layer of good natural commercial fertilizer.

No need to go the full 1” depth with commercial material.

Add a thick layer of loose straw to the garden 20cm (8 inches) and another layer of fertilizer and then top it off with 10cm (4 inches) of compost.

Water the garden until it’s wet but not soaking.

You can now start planting your seedlings immediately for an instant garden!

You also do NOT have to have these exact layers, materials and quantities.

Nature does not use a tape measure — use whatever you have at hand or can easily buy.

Building a vegetable garden like this (seriously messier than these pictures) can be achieved in a couple of hours if you have the materials on hand.

Build several garden beds in different shapes to add interest and variety to your gardening.

A bale of lucerne and a bale of straw will spread over a garden about 2m by 1.5m. If you have a reasonable growing season, get one plot underway and start the second later.

No dig gardens are just the same as other gardens...just easier to build and maintain.

Satisfying isn’t it? Aren’t you clever...that wasn’t too hard I bet.

Mary and Susan – Sister Rivers of the Fraser Coast LINDSAY TITMARSH AS A primary producer, I am familiar with the problems of making a living from the land.

Quite often the best of plans, as well as good management, is not enough to guarantee a successful harvest; Mother Nature is sometimes very unco-operative.

One of the most volatile primary production occupations is that of being an apiarist [beekeeper].

In Australia, imported Italian honeybees collect pollen [bee food] and nectar [future honey] from plants and trees. The weather plays a major part in whether a certain plant or tree actually produces these commodities.

Flowers can be there, but the weather can be too dry or too wet or other problems can arise.

Quite often seasonal conditions prevent flowering at all.

One of the most productive honey flows on the Fraser Coast comes from the river mangrove Aegiceras corniculatum.

to blossom. Lasting 6-8 weeks, the flow is followed by fruiting early the next year.

Following a heavy blossoming, the next year is usually very lean, with subsequent years again dependant on summerautumn rainfall.

Bees are transported in wooden boxes which, if moved in hot weather, have the entrance left open to prevent overheating.

On arrival at a new site, the hives are placed on above ground stands to prevent predation by imported cane toads.

Inside the box are vertical rectangular frames, which have had a wax foundation fixed on wires.

This wax film is embedded with six-sided cell imprints to ensure the bees extend and fill them in an orderly manner.

Some cells are for rearing replacement bees, while others are for storing pollen [bee bread], and others are for honey.

When hives arrive at a new site, the worker bees have no idea in which direction

blossoms may be. As they can forage anywhere in a four to five-kilometre radius, the target area is vast.

To prevent unnecessary searching by the workforce, scout bees head out early to see what the new area has to offer.

On return, the scout settles on the vertical honeycomb of a frame and then proceeds with a little dance for the benefit of the watching sterile female workers.

The bee runs around in a pattern shaped like a butterfly with its wings outstretched.

This translates to a straight section in the centre, with a semicircle attached on either side, about 40 mm wide in total.

The scout, who is always female, proceeds to run up the central bar of the pattern, then around one semicircle and back to the bottom again, repeating on the other side and continuing with alternate sides.

As they follow the procedure, the spectators watch the movement and listen to the buzz of her wings with the tips of their antennae.

The clues tell them the quantity of the nectar and the flying distance.

The scout continues to dance until she hears a

beep from her audience signalling they have understood, and only then does she stop to give them a scent of the bounty she has found.

To give the workers a clue as to the direction of the nectar, the scout rotates the axis of her pattern to an angle from the vertical position.

This angle coincides with the position of the nectar in relation to a line from

the entrance of the box to the sun.

Up until the spring of this year, local beekeepers experienced one of the worst production periods for many years, with large numbers of hives dying of starvation.

Let us hope a bountiful harvest from this year’s mangrove flow in the combined estuary of the Mary and Susan Rivers awaits them.

‘Zombie drivers’ - the frightening danger on our roads RACQ has issued a serious plea to Queensland drivers to wake up to the danger of fatigue, as startling research carried out by the Club revealed one third of motorists continued to drive tired despite knowing the fatal risks.

RACQ spokesperson Clare Hunter said more than 95 percent of Queenslanders considered fatigued drivers a danger on our roads, yet more than 35 percent still got behind the wheel while tired.

“With so many people fighting sleep while driving, every third driver has admitted to basically being a zombie sometime in the last 12 months,” Ms Hunter said.

“Fatigue is one of the Fatal Five causes of road deaths in Queensland and can be as dangerous as driving drunk.

“Even a brief lapse in concentration can have a deadly outcome. Last year, 30 people were killed in fatigue related crashes in Queensland and hundreds more were hospitalised with serious injuries.”

As part of National Road Safety Week, Ms Hunter urged motorists to think long and hard about whether they were up to the challenge of driving they before hit the road.

“This week is the perfect time to revisit the choices we make every time we get behind the wheel.

“We know we shouldn’t be driving while we’re tired, so don’t gamble on a cup of coffee or blasting the radio to get you through,” she said.

“Get a good night’s sleep before you hit the road, avoid driving at times you’re normally in bed and if you’re on a long journey, stop every two hours for a break.

“Fatigue can easily creep up on you, so be on the lookout for those early warning signs like feeling drowsy, yawning, blinking more than usual, having difficulty concentrating, failing to notice road signs or landmarks or slow reactions to traffic.

It could save a life.”

RACQ Head of Public Policy Rebecca Michael said the Commonwealth should lead an Australia wide approach to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles.

“Rather than a piecemeal approach to road user charging, the Federal Government needs to work with the states to

ensure any reforms are harmonised across the country,” Dr Michael said.

“Currently fuel excise is a major source of funding for road and transport infrastructure, but the revenue raised from these taxes is under threat if something isn’t done soon to manage the growing uptake of low emissions

vehicles.

“While we want to incentivise the uptake of electric vehicles into the future, it’s critical fuel excise tax at a federal level and statebased taxes ensure we have enough money to pay for the roads and infrastructure to keep the country moving.

“We don’t want to see more taxes for motorists, but it’s important we overhaul our funding model and fuel excise arrangements.

“To make sure switching to electric vehicles is both affordable for drivers and ensure critical projects continue to be funded.” she said.

New Toyota Yaris Cross SUV will impress TOYOTA has launched its all-new Yaris Cross that builds on a rich SUV heritage to deliver a stylish compact package designed to meet the lifestyle needs of active urban dwellers.

As Toyota’s first entry in the light SUV market, the Yaris Cross doesn’t compromise when it comes to style or city-suitability and still delivers all the safety, versatility, functionality and capability of a larger SUV. The Yaris Cross - the second member in the allnew Yaris family - offers a game-changing presence with its class-leading safety features, hybrid drivetrain, advanced electric AWD system and a premium, flexible interior.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley said the new Yaris Cross provides the perfect blend of small-car style and SUV functionality and capability.

“Toyota was a pioneer in the small SUV market when we launched the original RAV4 in 1994.

RAV4 is now the world’s best-selling SUV and we

expect the all-new Yaris Cross is set to make as big an impact on the light SUV market in years to come,” Mr Hanley said.

“Set to appeal to metroliving, country exploring, active urban dwellers, it delivers all the style, advanced technology, safety and a very fuelefficient hybrid drivetrain demanded for the weekly commute.” he said.

The Yaris Cross is available in nine variants with a choice of new petrol or hybrid powertrains, 2WD (front) or electric AWD, and three grades entry-level GX, mid-range GXL and top-of-the-range Urban.

Driving the front wheels through a smooth and efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT), it seamlessly shifts between petrol and electric power to deliver the optimum balance of performance and supremely good fuel economy with a combined cycle fuel consumption of just 3.8l/100km1.

CO2 emissions are a correspondingly low 86g/ km2.

AWD hybrid models gain a third electric motor generator to drive the rear wheels in slippery or off-tarmac conditions when maximum traction is called for.

Under the bonnet is a choice of two new 1.5-litre petrol and hybrid powertrains it shares with the all-new Yaris hatch.

The AWD system also offers a Trail Mode to further improve off-tarmac capability, with the system automatically braking a slipping or freely rotating wheel to ensure drive torque is directed to the wheels with the most traction at all times.

The hybrid system for 2WD versions combines a 67kW/120Nm, 1.5-litre three-cylinder, Atkinson Cycle petrol engine with a pair of motor generators that produces a maximum combined output of 85kW.

The total system generates the same maximum combined output of 85kW as the 2WD hybrid models, with a marginal increase in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions due to the extra weight of the

Confusing conditions still fishing well out this week’s local fishing report.

THE TEAM from FREEDOM FISHING SUPPLIES WE’VE had such a mixed bag when it comes to the weather, we’ve had it hot, cold, muggy and stormy.

No wonder the fish are confused – but they are still out there let’s check

The higher reaches of the Mary are still fishing well, lots of big fish on the sounders, the trick is to get them to bite.

Best results have been on live shrimps or prawns so make sure to take your cast net.

The river mouths of the Susan & Mary Rivers down towards the Heads have had some nice catches of Grunter, Bream

both Black & Silver plus Threadfin and Blue Salmon being taken on baits or lures.

Heading out into the Strait has also been fairly lucrative with boaties landing pelagic fish in the shallow channels on slugs or a floated pillie plus hitting the ledges and reefs along the island has produced catches of Blackall, Cod, Mosses Perch and Coral Bream.

Poona is reporting large summer whiting up to 38

cm and mud crabs taken from Poona creek.

Again, we can report that the Mangrove Jack are as feisty as ever smashing live baits or flesh strip bait.

Best spots to try would be up the Burrum River around the rock ledges or Kauri, Poona or Tuan Creeks.

Good quality Grunter have been landed at Deep Creek and Rocky Creek.

Large cobia and Spanish

Mackerel have been landed in Platypus bay taking deep diving lures.

We recommend the Halco crazy deep lure in the king brown colour.

Toogoom has been popular with large flathead and summer whiting and The Burrum River has also been fishing well with threadfin salmon, mangrove jack and grunter.

The Fraser Coast is still holding out for a good

run of crabs and prawns with some muddies being landing throughout the River systems.

Small patches of decent prawns have been located in some creeks along the island.

If you are lucky enough to get out on the reefs, Black Spot and Purple Tusk Fish along with Estuary Cod, Grassy Sweetlip and Blackall have been on the bite at Sammy’s, Moon Ledge, Mickey’s and the Artificial Reef.

This week's Brag Board Reef is very pleased with his 44cm PB Bass. Well done mate. Erin is doin it for the girls with her 3.8 kg Bluey. Tony had a great day out , this Grassy went 2.19kg Tate with a nice Mary River Threadfin caught off the Lammy pontoon. Michael christened his new boat with an awesome Threadfin.

Maryborough leads indoor hockey BRENDAN BOWERS INDOOR HOCKEY: Three weeks of indoor hockey action came to an end this weekend after the Maryborough Hockey Association finished hosting their third state championships event in a row.

The women’s master’s event preceded under 15 boys and 15 girls’ competitions at the Maryborough Indoor Hockey centre.

Eighteen teams competed in two divisions over the weekend with Maryborough Hockey Association fielding a team in each division.

Teams from as far away as Townsville and South East Queensland travelled to play in the under 15 girls competition.
