THE highly anticipated 2021 Fraser Coast Show gets underway today (Thursday) at the Maryborough Showgrounds.

And organisers are promising it will be one to remember after last year’s event was cancelled due to coronavirus.

Fraser Coast Agricultural Show Society president Melinda Wright said preparations for this year’s show had been shortened due to COVID, with planning only able to begin after approval from health authorities in February.

This was compounded by a lack of volunteers and a struggle to attract sponsors.

But, as the saying goes, the show must go on.

Ms Wright said the theme of this year’s show was “horses to horsepower”, with a particular focus on youth in agriculture.

For a gold coin donation, children can take part in the

Little Farmers Club activities on both days.

They will be making beeswax candles, potting, planting seedlings, doing clay arts and craft and the first 100 children to take part each day will get a free ice cream from Mr Whippy.

It’s part of the show’s Next Generation initiative, which seeks to get young people involved in the show.

The initiative provides an opportunity for young people to be mentored and run part of the event, so they are able to step up and replace the current dwindling roster of volunteers, many of who are ageing.

“A few of the arts and craft sections are missing this year, not because of COVID, but because of a lack of volunteers,” Ms Wright said.

One section that is powering ahead is the horses.

“Horse nominations have almost tripled since the last show,” Ms Wright said.

THE mystery of loud explosions and ground tremors in Maryborough this month has been solved.

Windows and doors rattled at some properties.

Residents across the Fraser Coast reported hearing the series of half a dozen loud, rumbling booms and the ground shaking in the morning and afternoon on

While many thought an earthquake and aftershocks were responsible, no seismic activity was recorded by Geosciences Australia.

Geosciences Australia is the government agency responsible for earthquake detection.

A Department of Defence spokesperson confirmed that the noises and tremors were due to army activity at the Wide Bay Training Area (WBTA) in Tin Can Bay. The spokesperson said soldiers from the 7th Combat Brigade were detonating unexploded ordinance, also known as UXO, at the site.

is a regular occurrence at WBTA and poses no threat to the public,” the spokesperson said.

“This routine training is part of the Australian Defence Force’s regular schedule and is designed to ensure our people are operating at the highest level of capability to respond where required, to support Australia’s national interests.”

Former Councillor presented with OAM JAY FIELDING FORMER Maryborough and Fraser Coast deputy mayor Julie Arthur has been presented with her Medal of the Order of Australia.

Mrs Arthur received the award in last year’s Australia Day Honours but had to wait until this month to be presented with it by Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey.

Due to coronavirus, such honours are now presented by the Governor in individual ceremonies rather than in group functions as they were previously.

Mrs Arthur was joined by husband John, her brother-in-law and his partner for the presentation.

Her life of public service began when former Maryborough mayor Alan Brown was putting a team together to contest elections in 1991.

At the time, he was the chairman of the local committee for National Fitness, for which Mrs Arthur worked.

She went on to become the youngest woman elected to

Maryborough City Council in its history.

“It was a huge honour that the division put their faith in me as a young woman to represent them,” Mrs Arthur told the Sun this week.

She fondly recalled that locals would begin claiming prime vantage spots hours before the concert began and the lasting impression it left on performers, including stars such as Kamahl and Julie Anthony, who years later reminisced about it while performing at the Brolga Theatre.

“When I received notification, it was like a ‘pinch-me’ moment,” she said.

“I unquestionably gave of myself, my time, my commitment to serve the people and never do you seek recognition.”

Born and bred in the Heritage City, Mrs Arthur said among the many highlights of her life of public service one shone bright – literally.

“It was championing, in the Maryborough City Council days, Light Up the City.”

“That will stay for me for a long time.”

Mrs Arthur served as a Maryborough City Councillor from 1991 to 2008 and as deputy mayor from 2004 to 2008.

Following amalgamation in 2008, she was elected as a Fraser Coast Regional Councillor and was deputy mayor in 2010.

Mrs Arthur also played a prominent role in the Australian Local Government Women’s Association, serving at

She is the president of the Maryborough Brass Band and a past president of Zonta Maryborough.

Mrs Arthur was made a life member of Softball Maryborough in 2012, the Fraser Coast Agricultural Show Society in 2015 and the Queensland branch of the Local Government Women’s Association in 2007.

Another local legend to be recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia this month was the late rugby league referee Paul Goener.

Former councillor and community stalwart Julie Arthur with her Medal of the Order of Australia.

Mr Goener was a referee from 1961 to 2006 and was made a life member of the Wide Bay Rugby League in 1987.

Referees Association, the Maryborough Rugby League Referees Association and the Wide Bay and Burnett Referees Association.

He was also a life member and former president and vice-president of the Queensland Rugby League

In 2008, he was named the Fraser Coast Referee of the Century.

Concerned residents are wondering why access to our children by paedophiles is so easy online, through their computers and phones.

One of the main problems with new technology is that in many cases, children can use it better than us, and it can be difficult for us to understand how search engines can provide unwitting kids with sleazy results, and lead them to inappropriate websites.

The fact is that paedophiles will continue to find ways to connect with our kids.

- D. Weymiens A PAEDOPHILE AMONGST US The Sun’s recent online story (also reprinted in this edition) about a local paedophile being sentenced to a minimum of just eight months prison sent shivers up my spine.

This is a man that some of us knew. We know his friends, and some of us socialised with him.

This is too close to home.

I must admit that along with lots of other people, I read similar stories from around the world, but those don’t hit as hard as this one.

This is a very real

reminder that these people live amongst us and in many cases have access to our children.

They might look like everyone else, they might sound like everyone else, but they definitely don’t think like the rest of us.

With this man’s sentence, the innocent world we thought we lived in here in Maryborough may be gone and that makes me very sad.

Our children deserve the best we can give them, and that includes protecting from these predators.

Maryborough child pornographer sentenced CRAIG WINTER

A CONVICTED Maryborough child pornographer has been sentenced to just 8 months in gaol.

Matthew James Barsby, 45, last week received two and a half years for his crimes against children, with a minimum of eight months to serve behind bars by Judge Richard Jones.

He pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing child pornography, with dozens of images and videos of pre-pubescent children – including rape scenes - found on his laptop after it was seized by police.

An outpouring of emotion has been felt throughout the City both about Barsby’s crimes, and his sentence in what many believe is a travesty of justice.

Since we first published this story online, dozen of comments have been left on The Sun’s Facebook page condemning the short gaol term, whilst also congratulating the police on the conviction.

What the budget brings to our region

JAY FIELDING FEDERAL Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien said the test for the 2021-22 Budget released this month will be what difference is made on the ground.

“The headline funding announcements sound impressive, but they must make a practical difference to achieve their stated outcomes,” Mr O’Brien said.

“I welcome the $17.7 billion record commitment for aged care, which includes an extra 80,000 new home care packages, but this funding boost must address the serious pressures the aged care sector faces,” he said.

“This additional funding must deliver an increase to aged care providers, and an increase to the number of packages available in regional areas like Wide Bay. “After my long campaign calling for fair pay for occupational therapists and other allied health professionals who care for veterans, the Government has acted in this Budget with a $61.9 million boost for these services which will increase the

availability and quality of care provided to veterans.

“Funding for mental health and suicide prevention is also increased in the Budget with $2.3 billion to improve outcomes and access to services, and this must also mean that local services like Headspace receive the funding they need to meet local demand.”

In Maryborough, the Budget provides a final payment of $8.5 million towards the $60 million Rheinmetall Nioa Munitions plant.

“The Morrison Government’s $28.5 million contribution is already helping to create an extra 100 permanent local jobs, as well as building Australia’s sovereign defence manufacturing capabilities with this world-class facility,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Projects along the Bruce Highway in Wide Bay also receive funding in the Budget including the Cooroy to Curra Section D Gympie bypass, which is under construction now and due for completion in 2024.

“The Budget also commits $11.2 million towards the

$14 million reconstruction of the intersection of the Bruce and Wide Bay Highways at Bells Bridge, which is expected to be completed this financial year.”

“The Budget also includes $20 million for the overtaking lanes on the Bruce Highway at Tinana which are finally taking shape,” he said.

The federally funded project is due to be completed later this year.

“There is also an allocation of $19,987,698 in 2021-22 towards the $103 million Saltwater Creek upgrade near Aldershot,” Mr O’Brien said.

The Budget also included an $18 million commitment for a water storage project for Maryborough.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council will receive $3,824,114 allocations through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program in the 2020-21 financial year to spend on local priority projects: “The Budget also delivers a final payment of $98,750 to complete the Maryborough Portside Cultural Precinct, taking the Australian

More O’Brien said about 49,100 taxpayers in Wide Bay would benefit from tax relief of up to $2745 this year, from the extension of the low and middle income tax offset to 2021-22 and the decision to bring forward the next stage of the government’s tax relief plan.

“An extended and expanded JobTrainer Fund will upskill job seekers and young people, which has supported 1490 apprentices in Wide Bay. These new measures will lead to more opportunities for apprentices and trainees with expanded wage subsidies,” Mr O’Brien said.

“This means more money for local households to assist with the cost of living, and it will also help generate economic activity to create jobs,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We’re also making childcare more affordable by increasing the child care subsidy for families with more than one child aged 5 and under, which will benefit around 250,000 families nationally by an average of $2200 each year.”

The government is doubling its commitment to the JobTrainer Fund to support a further 163,000 new training places to upskill job seekers and meet skills shortages.

“This will help them to purchase new equipment, increasing their productivity and encouraging business owners to hire staff and expand production,” he said.

“Around 6500 businesses in Wide Bay will be able to use the extended loss carry back measure to support cash flow and boost confidence.”

A $250 million extension of the Building Better Regions Fund will provide councils, community groups, sporting clubs

and veterans service organisations in Wide Bay the opportunity to apply for funding for projects that improve local communities.

“There’s much to be done, and it’s important that people in Wide Bay benefit from the broader Budget measures,” Mr O’Brien said.

Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders said the Budget was not good for the state.

“We see South Australia, NSW, all the other states, get $3 billion, and Queensland gets $1.3 billion in infrastructure spending,” Mr Saunders said.

“The Budget is a fraud.

We’ve been dudded in Queensland,” he said.

Mr Saunders said he was particularly disappointed that funding for the upgrade of the intersection of the Pialba-Burrum Heads Road and the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road would not come through until 2024.

“A lot of the stuff is on the never-never,” he said.

“It’s a marketing Budget for an early election.”

Kelpies jump into action for the show

COURTNEY Marshall and her six kelpies will be putting on a real showstopper at the Fraser Coast Show today and tomorrow.

Ms Marshall is the owner of K’gari Kelpie Stud based in Samford, north of Brisbane.

Information or dash cam footage of this vehicle is being sought.

Before becoming a breeder, Ms Marshall became involved in show jumping with her first kelpie seven years ago.

DETECTIVES from Maryborough Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) and the Homicide Investigation Unit (HIU) are continuing to seek public assistance as part of ongoing investigations into the suspicious death of 58-year-old Pacific Haven man, Mark Carson.

Her second kelpie, Heidi, was not desexed and after taking out the Australian Kelpie Muster in Victoria, winning the show jump, hill climb and 100m dash, the idea to breed the dogs became a reality.

Mark was a respected member of his small community, a former volunteer rural fire fighter and passionate personal trainer when he died from a severe wound in Pacific Haven on April 3.

“I thought maybe we could actually do this and become a real stud,” Ms Marshall said.

“I found my spark.”

Heidi has now had two litters and Ms Marshall has since acquired two more breeding dogs and recently her first stud dog.

Ms Marshall named her business K’gari, the indigenous name for Fraser Island, as her dad worked on the island and she spent a lot of time there growing up, developing a love

At the show, Ms Marshall will give demonstrations on jumping, tricks and obedience, and locals can even bring along their own dogs to have a go as well.

“Dingoes were my favourite thing in the world,” she said.

Fraser is famously home to dingoes, which were bred with Scottish sheepdogs to create the kelpie breed.

“You’ll be able to come and say hi. You can come and jump the dogs,” she said.

“We get the crowd to help jump the dogs.”

Vintage machinery a real attraction

VINTAGE machinery will take centre stage today and tomorrow at the 2021 Fraser Coast Show, which has the theme of “horses to horsepower”.

Show society director Lex Cowell, a vintage car

enthusiast, is in charge of the working heritage area.

Mr Cowell said displays would feature horse-drawn vehicles and their modern equivalent.

HUNDREDS of spectators turned out for last weekend’s Independent Riders Show & Shine in Maryborough.

The annual competition saw dozens of motorbike and car enthusiasts uncover their machines for the public, vying for trophies in six categories.

Ranging from vintage and classics, through to modern and muscle, and

from ‘as found’ to sparkling restorations, the owners’ attention to detail was on display.

Some of the impressive full-restoration projects had taken over twenty years to complete, others just six months.

All proceeds from the day were donated by the Independent Riders to the Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary.

CRAIG WINTER HE’S NOT a Beverly Hillbilly, Ron Laycock is a self-described Bauple Hillbilly.

His beautifully detailed and original 1930s Willys 101 Commercial looks like it just came out of the barn, but it took two years of work to get it to this stage says Ron.

“There is as much of the original vehicle as I could keep.” he says.

“Including rusty bolt heads that have been cut and welded onto threaded rod instead of using new ones.”

Ron bought the truck in Howard, where it had been retired after a life of hard work in Chinchilla.

“For many touring productions, more than 50% of their equipment is carried in storage boxes and packaging designed to protect it.

“The new, large scenery dock within the workshop and theatre space will assist with the storage of these items; and provide space for repairs to be undertaken if needed.

“Currently many areas that are required by performers are also used for storage which limits the use of the theatre by larger community groups such as dance schools and eisteddfods.

“Having appropriate space to store resources will improve the client experience as well as streamline the work required to prepare for events and shows.”

The $500,000 project to build the new workshop and theatre space was funded under Round 3 of the Queensland Government – Works for Queensland program and built by local company WIN Constructions.

The new space was important for local productions and to attract touring shows, Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

“Council is very focused on ensuring we attract touring shows to the Brolga to inspire local artists, provide us with a cultural outlet and entertain us,” he said.

Reunion celebrates ninety years JAY FIELDING

MARYBOROUGH man Kevin Riley got a rare treat for his 90th birthday – a family reunion attended by about 120 relatives.

“I didn’t start taking her out then. She wouldn’t have a bar of me,” he said.

Mr Riley is the youngest and sole-surviving of nine children born to his English immigrant father and Irish immigrant mother.

He was born in Brisbane on May 10, 1931, and grew up in the city.

After attending boarding school in Toowoomba, he completed an electrical apprenticeship in Brisbane, worked in the field and then went back to study to become an electrical engineer.

That was what led he and his late wife, Marie, and their children, to Maryborough in 1966, taking up the role as the assistant district engineer at the Wide Bay Burnett Electricity Board. He has lived here since other than a three-year stint in Kingaroy on secondment for work.

Mr Riley met Marie when he was in Grade 1 and she was in Grade 3 at St Ambrose’s school in

It was his friendship with Marie’s brother that led to their courtship and marriage on Mr Riley’s 21st birthday.

“I never forgot our wedding anniversary,” he said.

Raising a family in Maryborough, Mr Riley was heavily involved in the Catholic Church, local sports and community activities.

He was the founding president of Brothers Hockey Club and later became involved at the Maryborough Golf Club, where he was also president.

“I’d never seen or played a game of hockey in my life,” he said.

One of his sons, Neal, put his name forward to join a new club being set up

by Brother Mullane at Christian Brothers school (now St Mary’s College).

“I said ‘Look, you are not playing every bloody sport and three that haven’t yet been invented,” Mr Riley said.

“You go and tell Brother Mullane that you’re not playing bloody hockey,” he said.

Neal wasn’t game to tell Brother Mullane.

“I said ‘Righto, I’ll go to this meeting he’s called and I’ll tell him. I’m not frightened of Brother Mullane,” Mr Riley said.

“So I went to the meeting and I came away as the inaugural president of Brothers Hockey Club.

“I’ve always had the (belief), in my whole life, if you were any sort of organisation, if it’s good enough to support you, you should support it.

“I’ve always taken an active interest in every association I’ve been in, (and) ended up as president or secretary.

“I’ve never taken on treasurer – I can’t count the change in my pocket.”

Now Mr Riley’s interests have turned musical, and he is a member of the Maryborough Musos ukulele club and Mansong in Hervey Bay. Of his seven children and more than 60 grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, only one granddaughter, who is living in Canada, was unable to make Saturday’s reunion at Wook-koo Park.

Kevin Riley celebrated his 90th with family.

The youngest greatgrandchild in attendance was six months old.

The Rileys have stayed a close family, the previous family reunion in 2009 having been held on the 100th anniversary of his father’s arrival in Australia.

On Sunday, Mr Riley spent the day at home at Bolton Clarke Chelsea enjoying visits from family members and friends in Maryborough.

Graduate plans to use animal-assisted therapy RESEARCH to provide fresh insights into the benefits of animalassisted therapy within the disability sector is the next career focus for new Fraser Coast graduate Caitlin Winen.

Caitlin, who received a Commendation for Academic Excellence when she graduated recently from USC with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours), has begun working as a community occupational therapist with Total Rehab Solutions in Hervey Bay.

“I am enjoying the diversity and challenges of this role within the disability sector,” said Caitlin. “I am gaining so much valuable knowledge and experience from working with clients with so many different conditions and needs.

“One day I might be helping a client to develop their independence in life skills, and the next day I am prescribing equipment or home modifications to increase a client’s independence and safety.”

On top of her Occupational Therapy studies at USC’s Sunshine Coast campus, Caitlin also completed a nationally accredited Certificate III in dog behaviour and training.

Her next career goal is to merge the two qualifications.

“Research indicates that animal-assisted therapy promotes positive effects on mental and physical health across a range of populations, so it can be a valuable therapeutic tool

for the disability sector,” Caitlin said.

“Animals naturally bring unconditional love, acceptance and a judgement-free nature to a therapy session,” she said. “However, research in this area is still relatively limited, which is why I hope to undertake postgraduate studies to expand this field of knowledge.”

After discovering the holistic nature of occupational therapy while completing senior at Caloundra State High School, Caitlin became inspired by the profession and enrolled at USC’s Sunshine Coast campus in 2016.

She said a highlight was her final placement at Gladstone Hospital and Community Health Service.

“I was able to apply all of the theoretical knowledge I had learned over the past four years to my practice and successfully manage

The Australian Government has engaged BUSY At Work to provide a full-time Career Facilitator who is located at 5/131 Bazaar Street.

The Career Facilitator will help youths develop skills to help them find employment without having to leave the region.

The hub services the Wide Bay region, including the Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Gympie, Bundaberg and Burnett regions.

Mr O’Brien said the hub is one of ten Training Hubs being trialled across Australia as part of a $50.6 million investment by the Australian Government to improve opportunities for Year 11 and 12 students in regions with high youth unemployment.

“Wide Bay youths shouldn’t have to leave the

region to find employment, so this Industry Training Hub is about helping local students to gain the skills that local employers are looking for,” Mr O’Brien said.

“This is helping students start their careers without having to leave their hometowns, and also helps local businesses find the skilled staff they need to grow their businesses.”

Mr O’Brien said the Career Facilitator is engaging with local employers, especially those who are experiencing difficulty finding people with the right skills they need, to advise senior high school students of skill shortages in the region.

“The hub is identifying the skills employers want and connecting students with training programs to make them job-ready to take advantage of those employment opportunities.

“Industries, workforces and career options are changing rapidly, and this is all about building a strong workforce that meets our local industry needs, now and into the future,” he said.

Industry Training Hub Career Facilitator for Maryborough, Karen Seymour, stated: “The Industry Training Hub will provide the bridge needed between the demand for skilled staff and employment opportunities for young people in the region.”

“I’m looking forward to assisting the Wide Bay region’s local industry through encouraging young people into vocational education pathways that will skill them for career pathways in these industries,” she said.

The Maryborough Training Hub is one of five Training Hubs that have now commenced.

The other Training Hubs are operating in Burnie in Tasmania, Townsville in Queensland, Shepparton in Victoria and Port Pirie in South Australia.

Additional Training Hubs are planned for Grafton and Gosford in NSW, Wanneroo and Armadale in Western Australia, and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

growing in tidal areas on the Fraser Coast have one or more inbuilt mechanisms to allow them to deal with unwanted salt.

Quite a few species of mangroves have microfilters on their roots.

Salt (NaCl – Sodium Chloride), one of Earth’s most common elements, was formed back in primordial times when the oceans began to form.

These important features must be very efficient to be able to remove most of the dissolved salt in seawater, yet still allow freshwater in.

At that time, some forms of plant life evolved to live in a freshwater environment, while others were happy to ‘give salt a go’.

Other mangroves such as the Large-leafed Orange Mangrove, use a totally different method to reduce unwanted salt.

Maybe back then the oceans were not as salty, and it was a gradual progression by plants into the increasingly briny water.

Fossil records indicate that mangroves have been around for many millions of years.

Just because these trees live in a marine environment, does not mean that they enjoy allowing an excess of salt-laden water into their system.

These trees pour excess salt into certain sacrificial leaves, after which that leaf is dropped.

I have often wondered how trees and plants react to certain circumstances. In this case, how does a tree control what happens in one leaf, yet nearby ones growing on the same stem are not affected.

After a few days of fine weather, the salt can be seen glistening in the sunlight.

Telstra to pay $50m penalty THE Federal Court last week ordered that Telstra pay $50 million in penalties for engaging in unconscionable conduct when it sold mobile contracts to more than 100 Indigenous consumers across three states and territories, in proceedings brought by the ACCC. Telstra admitted that between January 2016 and August 2018, it breached the Australian Consumer Law and acted unconscionably when sales staff at five licensed Telstra-branded stores signed up 108 Indigenous consumers to multiple post-paid mobile contracts which they did not understand and could not afford.

“We expect much better behaviour from large businesses like Telstra, but all businesses in Australia have a responsibility to ensure sales staff are not breaching consumer law by manipulating or tricking consumers into buying products or services they do not need or cannot afford,” Mr Sims said.

Telstra admitted liability, cooperated with the ACCC’s investigation and made joint submissions with the ACCC to the Court in relation to penalty and other orders.

Great fundraising ideas keep Maryborough Refuge going THE Maryborough Animal Refuge loves some of the ways in which local organisations and individuals have raised money for the animals.

Last Christmas, Alanna Pratt from the Telstra Call Centre in Adelaide Street organised a fundraiser, daring her colleague, Andrew, to wear her Christmas dress and headband. She then took glamour shots of courageous Andrew and sold them at $2 a time.

Altogether, this generous and fun-loving workgroup raised $528 to donate to the Refuge.

West State School raised a whopping $1,668.10 last

year for the dogs and cats by collecting their cans & recyclables.

This fund-raising effort was organised by staff member Allison Whitaker.

Enthusiastic supporter, Year 5 student Eboni, was awarded a prize by the school for consistently bringing the highest number of recyclables.

She told the Refuge President, “I just love animals.”

Neville and Barbara George recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

In memory of their muchloved dog, Bluey, who had passed away last year, they asked their guests to make a donation to the Maryborough Animal Refuge instead of giving presents to the couple.

Local chiropractor wants to inform the community on their healthcare options.

WITH the prevalence of back pain being a true burden in the community, locals are being urged to consider all their healthcare options when it comes to the treatment and intervention of back pain.

According to the Institute of Health & Welfare, around 4 million Australians (16% of the population) have back problems.

It is also estimated that 70–90% of people will suffer from low back pain at some point in their lives.

Local chiropractor, Dr James Farmer believes that while pain is the main symptom, we know low back pain is now the leading cause of disability worldwide.

“Whether people are experiencing pain from bad habits like inactivity, or are suffering from an

exercise injury, they have options like chiropractic care to help them get back to their best self,” said Dr Farmer.

A recent survey by the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) found that 40% of respondents admitted to suffering from back pain since a third of the Australian workforce found themselves working from home last year.

The same survey also revealed that a third of people living with pain, including back pain, admit to having reduced movement and mobility (32.6%) which has significant impacts on quality of life, including work life, social life and mental health.

“With back pain being a leading cause of disability, it’s important that our community understand all their options when it comes to treating their pain, and that chiropractic care can be a viable option for them.”

A COLLABORATIVE project involving the University of Sydney, the Centenary Institute, the University of Technology Sydney and the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney, has received funding from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) to continue work on the development of a unique, singleshot vaccine against COVID-19 variants of concern.

The MRFF grant, worth $1.6 million, will allow the research team to undertake late-stage pre-clinical assessment of their protein based vaccine candidate. The aim is to be able to fasttrack the candidate for testing in human trials.

“We’ve developed a unique, single-shot vaccine that in preclinical testing elicits potent SARS-CoV-2 specific immunity,” said lead investigator on the project Professor Jamie Triccas from the Faculty of Medicine and Health and the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney, and also Centenary Institute

Dr Claudio Counoupas, research scientist at the Centenary Institute and Chief Investigator on the project said that they had rapidly updated their vaccine candidate to incorporate the spike antigen from the B.1.351 (South African) variant of

Mary nurse shares the passion ONE IS at the beginning of her leadership journey while the other can look back on nearly five decades of experience and change, but nurses Vanessa Hujber and Carmel Crotty are united by much – not least a passion for their profession and a desire to never stop learning.

Ms Crotty’s mother and sister were nurses, but it was not a career she initially pursued – firstly working locally for the Department of Primary Industries and then spending 18 months as a secretary in a public relations firm in London’s Fleet Street.

Carmel has put that into practice herself by completing her own degree as well as a masters and a postgraduate certificate in chronic disease. She said as well as learning opportunities and the variety of work, the links nurses had to the community was special.

The two Wide Bay nursing leaders have reflected on what drives them as they continually strive to provide the best possible care for their community.

“When I came back, I told Mum I didn’t know what to do since I had such an exciting job over there.

She told me to go into nursing,” Ms Crotty said.

“I’ve nursed patients, their grandparents, their parents, their children.

It’s rewarding to be there for patients and their families in times of difficulty,” she said.

“I started being in charge when I was 25, of a private ward of 38 beds.

I’ve had a charge (ward leadership) position ever since.”

“It is a humbling position to be in, to help someone through their last days so they are comfortable and not want for anything.”

Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery Fiona Sewell said she was proud of her whole team, who displayed the true nursing values of resilience, courage, teamwork, professionalism and especially adaptability.

Having started out as a nurse at Maryborough Hospital in 1975, Ms Crotty has reflected on how the variety of work and learning opportunities that have kept her in the profession some 46 years later.

“What’s been rewarding about nursing is working with excellent staff, the patient appreciation for what you do and the incredible knowledge base you build,” said Ms Crotty, Maryborough Hospital’s Ward 2 nurse unit manager.

“It is a continual learning experience. Every day I learn something new and no day is the same – which is why it’s interesting.”

While her training as a nurse involved three years working in the hospital, Ms Crotty believes the switch to university training has been an important investment in developing the knowledge base of new nurses.

“There are so many opportunities now in so many different sectors, whether it’s primary, tertiary or secondary care. As a nurse you must always want to continue to learn,” she said.

Vanessa Hujber, Hervey Bay Hospital’s relatively new nurse unit manager of theatres, started her professional life as a personal assistant in the corporate world, and came to nursing after having two children and going

through a divorce.

Graduating from the University of Southern Queensland in 2009, she came to Hervey Bay Hospital as a graduate nurse in 2010, where she found her passion in theatre.

“I wanted something that was fulfilling, stable and provided opportunities for career growth,” she said.

ALMOST two thirds of young drivers admit to being distracted while driving, according to new survey by Queensland’s peak motoring body.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the Club surveyed year 12 students across the State as part of its awardwinning Docudrama road safety program and found 68 percent admitted to having been distracted while behind the wheel.

“Distracted driving is the fastest growing problem we have on Queensland roads so it’s very concerning to see this statistic remain as high for the second year in a row,” Ms Ritchie said.

More students in the regions admitted to being distracted than those who lived in metro areas, and it’s more common among private school students than in state schools.

“The overwhelming majority of students surveyed told us they believed it was OK to use a mobile phone to play music, to make a

loudspeaker call and as a GPS, all behaviours that are illegal for P1 licence holders.

Lower temps increase local catches THE TEAM from FREEDOM FISHING SUPPLIES AS THE water temps continue to drop the fishing is only getting better.

There are so many great reports coming in, let’s check out what’s being caught.

Talk about a pelagic

dream land. The waters throughout the Great Sandy Strait and Hervey Bay are absolutely jam packed full of a variety of bait fish which is so irresistible to our pelagic species such as - Mack Tuna up to 5kg, Grey & Schoolie Mackerel, Queen Fish and Bonito.

140mm is working well on the Mackerel.

Over along the Island on the drop offs and reefs anglers have reported plenty of reef species for the dinner table, Squire, Coral Bream, Mosses Perch, Estuary Cod & Blackall plus the occasionally Coral Trout.

Matching the hatch is key.

The size of the bait on the cast is tiny 2 - 3 inch, no bigger so if you see a bust up, 40g metal slugs are working the best.

Fresh bait is best and with herring, mullet and squid getting around collecting bait is all part of the adventure.

But trolling lures up to

which have been reported on the drift between the reef Islands and Tinnanbar. The average size is still around that 20 cm mark.

Legal Squire have been in numbers on Tinnanbar Ledge along with purple Tusk Fish, Grassy Sweetlip and Estuary cod and Trolling Medium diving lures in the channels throughout the Sandy Straits has produced quality Spanish, Grey and Spotted Mackerel.

Land based fisho’s have

been reeling them in, flicking curl tailed soft plastics in the shallows on the making tide around Amity Point, Poona Point & Maaroom for flathead, some being over 90cm.

Remember to gently release these big girls.

The Mary and Susan River systems have been producing Threadfin Salmon, Grunter up to 60cm, Black and Silver Bream, Cod and Jew.

Fishing around the rocks or ledges is best as the bait will gather there as the

rocks hold the heat.

The squid are still around in numbers throughout the Strait, Squid Jigs are working a treat.

For the wider boaties, the Wide Bay Bar has been keeping ice boxes filled with Snapper, Cobia and Pearl Perch and Red Emperor.

The Southern and Northern Gutters have been fishing well with anglers landing quality Grassy Sweetlip, Cockies, Scarlett’s, Hussar and a few reef Jacks.

Les is all smiles after landing this Queenie in the Strait, what a perfect looking day. Greg was also into the Pelagics with his 90cm Spotty Mackerel. Last up is Mark with a very nice Grassy Sweetlip, it weighed in at 2.55kg.

Eckert making transitions to his game BRENDAN BOWERS RUGBY LEAGUE: Bailey Eckert is one of the many Wallaroos junior transitioning to the A-grade Bundaberg Rugby League competition this season.

The hard-working hooker is enjoying the challenge of the step-up in the competition that senior football brings.

“It is a step-up, and I like the challenge of matching it with experienced players,” he said.

He is one of several 2020 under 18 players, including Seth Laherty and Keian Grogan, that are part of the Wallaroos develop from within policy.

A-grade coach Dan Sommerfeld has coached all of these players in the younger grades and believes they have the skills to compete at the higher level.

For Eckert, he is not only transitioning from junior to senior football but from half-back to hooker.

“It is a lot tougher with more defence in the middle of the ruck,” he said.

He believes that although both positions need to play ‘eyes up football’, it is a different role.

“You do not have to organise the rest of the team, and I am lucky that I have experiences halves, making it easier to adapt to the new role,” he said.

Coach Sommerfeld believes Eckert is adapting well.

“He is making a great fist of it; it is a big ask to get used to a new playing position,” Sommerfeld said.

Eckert is not getting ahead of himself and believes the uncompromising coaching style of Sommerfeld is helping the young players adapt to the senior game.

“His coaching style prepares us for what to expect on the field,” he said.

Annual four’s tournament returns

BRENDAN BOWERS LAWN BOWLS: The Maryborough Bowls Club greens were full of action over the weekend as ninety-six bowlers battled in the annual four’s tournament.

Bowlers from Brisbane, Western Queensland and Central Queensland joined

Wide Bay players in the two-day event.

The four-person teams played for a share of the $6200 prize, including a $2000 first prize.

Current Wide Bay, current and ex-State players were among the bowlers participating in the event.

The teams played three fifteen end matches on Saturday, followed by another two games on Sunday.

Maryborough Bowls Club president and board chairman Laurie Genrich is proud that the tournament could return after a year’s break caused by the pandemic.

“This tournament has been going a very long time, and it is one of the club’s major revenue earners of the year,” he said.

The club has managed to come through the COVID crisis relatively well, adapting to ensure they remain strong.

Maryborough Bowls Club’s Gary Deacon rolls one down the green.

“We have created a home for the Probus and Ukulele clubs and have just started ‘Live at the Bowlo’ concerts once a month with local bands playing at the venue,” Genrich said.

In a tightly fought contest, it was P Ivey, S Henry, G Jackson and C Hodges, all local Fraser Coast bowlers, who won the event.

The next major tournament for the club is their annual triples tournament in November.

Genrich reminded the community that the next ‘Live at the Bowlo’ will be held on June 12. Sons of Leon, Sugartown and Chloe and Alex, will be performing.
