Maryborough City Hall to become vaccination hub

JAY FIELDING MARYBOROUGH City Hall is set to become the city’s COVID-19 vaccination hub.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service has begun preparing to move the local vaccination clinic from Maryborough Hospital to the new location.

Clinics at Hervey Bay and Bundaberg hospitals will be shifted to the TAFE colleges in both cities.

The move is aimed to speed up the rollout of the vaccination.

The hubs are expected to be up and running this month.

Initially, the AstraZeneca vaccine will be provided, with the Pfizer vaccine to be offered at a later date.

Maryborough health workers will have their 12-week followup shot at City Hall.

A WBHHS spokesperson said City Hall provided the ease of access, nearby car parking and space needed for the hub.

“We’re excited to be able to

support and supplement the community rollout being led by the primary care sector, and we look forward to giving more people the chance to be protected from severe illness or death from COVID-19,” the spokesperson said Use of Maryborough City Hall will be restricted indefinitely as a result of the move.

Federal and state government health officials have been in discussions with Fraser Coast Regional Council for several months about setting up a hub at the venue.

Fraser Coast Show rodeo will be a point scorer

This year’s Show rodeo will be part of the National Rodeo Association’s point scoring series.

JAY FIELDING SHOWGOERS will be saddling up for an exciting rodeo at this year’s Fraser Coast Show.

Rodeo director Sharee Cook said there would be bull riding as well as barrel racing.

“There will be open bulls, novice bulls, junior bulls, mini bulls – all sorts of bull riding,” she said.

Ms Cook said the rodeo would be a National Rodeo Association pointscoring event.

“Being that it’s a pointscoring rodeo, we will have some of the best of the best come out and contest the rides, not just your average bull riders,” she said.

Ms Cook said there would also be a comedy act this year, featuring a clown and donkey. The clown will be handing out giveaways to the crowd.

A bar will also be operating.

Ms Cook said there would be more seating available this year, given the need

for the crowd to social distance, but people could also bring their own seating if they wanted to.

Once the rodeo finishes, festivities will kick on with an after-party. A popular DJ who is a regular on the country rodeo circuit will be in charge of music.

THIS year an a additional online system to buy your Fraser Coast Show tickets has been launched.

The rodeo and after-party will be the final event of the show, held on the night of Friday, May 21.

CRAIG WINTER ONE of Maryborough’s most beloved buildings is soon to be demolished after having been deemed structurally unsound by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

The Maryborough Sailing Club will be removed and the site reinstated as park land.

At a recent meeting, Council considered a structural investigation into the condition of the Maryborough Sailing Club building in Queens Park.

Cr Daniel Sanderson said the Maryborough Sailing Club building was constructed in the early 1900s on the banks of the Mary River and had suffered significant damage over the years from floods.

“As a result of the ongoing flood damage, only the ground floor of the building has been occupied

by Council’s Parks staff with the upstairs area

remaining unused,” he said.

Cr Sanderson said while the Maryborough Sailing Club building sits adjacent to heritage listed Queens Park, it was outside its heritage boundaries.

“The report concluded that upgrading the building in an attempt to meet current standards and codes could cost in excess of $750,000, and there would still be the potential for future flood damage to occur.

“As a result, Council has endorsed a recommendation to demolish the building at a cost of about $65,000 with the site to be returned to park land consistent with the Queens Park Botanical Garden.

“In addition, Council’s Parks staff who had been working from the building will be relocated to

Historic Granville memorial Rotary Clubs youth driver training saves lives celebrates 100 years “The Maryborough Showgrounds will be abuzz with students from 19 high schools in our region from Monday 31st May to Friday 4th June when the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program will be held”, Maryborough RYDA Committee Chairman, Lloyd Maddern said.

CRAIG WINTER THIS Saturday Granville State School will be celebrating the Centenary of their Cenotaph.

The memorial stands in the grounds of the Granville State School in Cambridge Street since it was constructed in 1920.

Our local Police are frustrated by road fatalities in our region particularly in the under 25 year age group over recent years and Police strongly believe that students gain significant benefits from attending the RYDA program.

The school held a fete to raise money for the memorial with a quoted price of £200, of which the fete raised almost half.

The war memorial committee erected an Honour Stone which recorded the names of those soldiers from the area who enlisted in WW1.

Saturday’s ceremony will include a WW1 re-enactment group, a lighthorseman with his horse, a Scottish pipe band, wreath laying, speeches, the last post, reveille, a high school band, history displays, mural painting, museum artefacts, poetry & singing.

The RYDA program has been developed and maintained by RSE (Road Safety Education) and is an initiative of Rotary International.

It is being organised by a local committee comprising members of the Maryborough and Hervey Bay Rotary clubs, a senior Police Officer, Driving Instructors, a solicitor, a former military officer and a crash survivor.

Chook champions have a crack

THE winners of the champion egg award at the last Fraser Coast Show say they’re going to have a red-hot “crack” at defending their title later this month.

Brother Brother Organics owners Amanda and Nick Kuhn took out the gong at the 2019 show before the business had even sold its first egg.

The company was the brainchild of Nick and his brother – hence the name – and is run from their parents’ Oakhurst property.

Nick and Amanda entered eggs in the show while still gaining their accreditation to sell eggs commercially, having received their first flock two months earlier.

They sold their first eggs after taking out the large egg, medium egg and champion egg categories.

“We did it just as a joke, Nick said.

“We thought we’ll just enter to see how our eggs stack up,” he said.

“We were very surprised to win. It was definitely something we weren’t expecting.”

Nick said the secret to producing a good egg was to let chickens do what comes naturally to them.

“You’ve got to let chickens be chickens,” he said.

“Chickens love to forage, they love to scratch, they love to dig, they love to dust bathe.”

The Kuhns feed their flocks a high-protein grain ration, which is supplemented by the grass and insects the chickens eat in the pastures they’re raised in.

Brother Brother Organics doesn’t use pesticides, insecticides or synthetic colourings in their feed.

Both their flocks are each guarded by a maremma dog, allowing the chickens freedom to roam and choose when they enter and exit their purposebuilt chicken caravans at night.

The couple also uses natural preventative measures to keep the birds happy and healthy, including feeding them shell grit and adding apple cider vinegar to their water.

Their flocks of hy-line brown chickens are rotated between pastures weekly.

“They’re very similar to an isa brown, but the ones we have are just a better layer,” Nick said.

Once the chickens stop laying at a profitable rate, they are rehomed to locals as backyard chickens.

Before the venture, Nick and Amanda had no experience farming chickens, although Nick had grown up on his parents’ property where beef cattle are run as a hobby rather than a business.

“My wife and I were living in Alice Springs at the time and I was a finance manager and my wife was a housing tenancy manager,” Nick said.

After forming the idea for Brother Brother Organics to create a profitable farm enterprise, Nick researched chickens and egg production for about six months.

Their flock has grown from 800 initially to 2800 now, producing 2400 to 2500 eggs a week.

Demand for ethically produced food using traditional methods was growing, Nick said, but the farm would top out with 3000 birds due to the labour-intensive nature of the business.

The eggs are all collected, graded and packed by hand.

With last year’s show cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Kuhns had to wait until this year to defend their crown.

“We were pretty disappointed we couldn’t do it last year,” Nick said.

They supply 10 cafes and restaurants and up to 15 retail stores on the Fraser Coast, as well as selling the eggs at the Thursday markets in Maryborough and Urangan’s Pier Markets on Saturdays.

“We’ll give it another crack this year.”

Nick said the Fraser Coast Show was the perfect opportunity for locals to raise awareness about their top-quality produce.

Maryborough girls celebrate 50 years CRAIG WINTER MARYBOROUGH State High School last week may have quietly celebrated it’s 140th anniversary, but it wasn’t the only party going on.

On Friday night after months of organisation, many excited ladies gathered together for their very own 50th reunion dinner to celebrate finishing grade 10 at the school in 1971.

Having since scattered to the four winds, most of the party guests had to travel long distances to attend.

Visitors arrived from as far away as WA, Tasmania, NSW, FNQ and beyond.

In 1971, Jenny Howell was told by her Guidance Officer that she’d only ever be good for pumping petrol, so a highlight of the night was a presentation about her extensive and successful career in the RAAF. The next night they again gathered at the high school to be part of the official 140th celebrations.

After a hectic weekend of catching up, the class promised to meet again in another 5 years.

Station Square is a generational thing JAY FIELDING

IT’S been 21 years since Station Square Shopping Centre opened, a momentous occasion in Maryborough’s history.

And in that time, it’s made its mark on the city and locals – some more than others.

Among those are Kathy Lynch and her five children, who have all have all worked at Big W, the centre’s major tenant since opening day on April 1, 2000.

Kathy now works in administration at the store, previously having been a frontend supervisor, and her two youngest children, Thomas and Hayden, also work at the store.

Daughters Alayna, Kiarra and Emily have since moved on.

“Alayna works at Auswide Bank, Kiarra is at the Sunshine Coast, she has two kids and she’s studying psychology, and Emily has just moved back to town with her son and partner and she’s studying nursing,” Kathy said.

Kathy said Big W was a great place to work and

she loved the freedom her role involved.

“I like it because of the people, particularly. It’s a good work atmosphere,” she said.

“I like the job that I do. I love coming to work.”

The company has provided opportunities for each of the Lynches.

Kathy was a stay-at-home mum before rejoining the workforce at Big W, and she said Alayna in particular had benefited from the development she underwent while at the store.

“She was extremely shy.

(Now) she gets awards at Auswide Bank for her sales.

“You wouldn’t think a shy person could sell things.”

Thomas has been able to work for several other stores in the chain, including being a founding staff member at the Sunshine Plaza store, and has returned to Maryborough to save money for planned travel to Canada.

“It’s good because you can move around and transfer with the company,” he said.

Hayden, who works in technology, was the last to join the store, following in the footsteps of his mother and siblings.

Big W Maryborough manager Jake Drinkwater said the store wouldn’t be the same without Kathy.

“I’ve only been here a year myself, but I’ve come to rely heavily on Kathy,” he said.

The Lynches aren’t the only family that have been pivotal team members at the Maryborough store.

Three generations of the Westbrook family have also worked there: Sharyn Westbrook, an employee since day one, three of her four children and now the third generation in the form of her grandson Josh Harris.

The opening of Big W represented the return of a department store to the city, which had been left without one since the closure of Boys.

Brolga hosts double USC graduation USC has staged its largest ever Fraser Coast graduation ceremony last Friday to celebrate the academic achievements of students who have completed degrees over the past two years.

Many were graduates from 2020 whose ceremony last year was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

USC Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Helen Bartlett said she was delighted that students who graduated in absentia last year in the midst of a global pandemic were able to experience a formal ceremony to mark the completion of their academic journeys.

About 90 students received their degrees from USC Chancellor Sir Angus Houston at the ceremony at Maryborough’s Brolga Theatre.

“Graduation is a tradition dating back to the 12th century and provides a wonderful opportunity for students to formally celebrate their accomplishments,” Professor Bartlett said.

“For their friends and family, lecturers and tutors and the wider

Fraser Coast community, it was a time to share in the success of our students and to show them how proud we are of all they have achieved.”

Nursing Science student Christina Buchan, who achieved an impressive grade point average of 6.7 out of 7, is among a group of students who also received awards for academic excellence and/ or student leadership at the ceremony.

USC staged its largest ever Fraser Coast graduation ceremony celebrating the academic achievements of students who have completed degrees over the past two years.

Nursing Science graduate Aleksandra Rosewell Rowe and her daughter Charlotte at the ceremony at the Brolga Theatre.

The mother-of-five, who left school in Year 10, will reflect on her inspiring education journey when she makes an address on behalf of all graduating students.

The students will now join a diverse USC alumni community of more than 28,000 – including medical and health professionals, engineers, scientists, conservationists, teachers and social workers.

Three generations came together to celebrate Megan O’Rourke’s graduation from USC Fraser Coast. She is pictured with her mother Stephanie Anderson, great aunt Lyn Smith (a former nurse who inspired Megan to studying Nursing Science) and her grandmother Marion Watts.

Local youth in new Local artist recognised agriculture competition

LOCAL high school students will this year have the opportunity to create amazing agricultural displays for the Fraser Coast Show.

MARYBOROUGH pastel artist Bette Phillips has been recognised for her community contribution with a Paul Harris Fellowship.

The Youth In Agriculture competition was developed to give high schools and youth groups from the Fraser Coast the chance to highlight the quality and variety of our regions produce, by putting together a large, traditional produce display at the Show.

Featuring everything from local fruit and vegetables, to our timber industry with plantation timbers and locally grown hardwood varieties, the objective of the competition is to bring our local youth together and let them show case their talents through design and teamwork.

Show Society Director and instigator of the competition Scott Hillier says that the brief is to design a display that has public appeal using lighting, design, colour and movement that incorporates the show theme.

This money has in turn been used by Rotary to help RDT Angels, Blue Book for Youth, Shelter Box and many local organisations.

Heritage grants winners Sail the Young Endeavour FOUR Fraser Coast heritage properties will be improved with the support of Council grants aimed at maintaining the heritage value and character of local streetscapes.

APPLICATIONS are now open for young Australians to join Sail Training Ship (STS) Young Endeavour for voyages between May and December 2021.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said Council would provide $27,051 in grants under round two of the 2020/21 Fraser Coast Heritage and Character Incentive Scheme.

“The Fraser Coast has a number of heritage buildings and places that tell the rich history of the region and that we want to keep, respect and pass on to future generations,” he said.

“Council’s incentive scheme seeks to encourage building owners to preserve and enhance the region’s heritage and character.

“The grants are a

co-contribution with Council matching the applicant dollar for dollar, up to a maximum of $10,000, and the works supported under this round include painting, window replacements and other minor repairs to four heritage properties.”

Minister for Defence Personnel Darren Chester said the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme program delivered a oneof-a-kind development opportunity for those aged 16-23 years.

“The 11-day internationally recognised youth development program in Young Endeavour is delivered by specially trained Royal Australian Navy personnel, and it is an experience that these young crew members will never forget,” Mr Chester said.

Seventeen-year-old Samantha Howard, of Newcastle, joined Young Endeavour for Voyage One of 2021, conquering her fear of heights on the second day. “Sailing in Young Endeavour has given me confidence to challenge myself more often,” Samantha said.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that you really can’t pass up.

Mr Chester said that after

completing a successful COVID-19 safe voyage program in early 2021, it was pleasing that we are now able to expand the program to allow more young Australians to participate in a development voyage.

“The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme looks forward to expanding opportunities for youth to join Young Endeavour as restrictions are lifted and it becomes practical to do so,” Mr Chester said.

Applications are now open to young Australians aged 16-23 and youth are encouraged to apply at www.youngendeavour. gov.au/apply-now-2021.

Applications can be submitted at any time to be considered for voyages.

Council community projects grants recipients

THE Fraser Coast Regional Council will provide more than $52,000 in grants to help seven local community groups improve their facilities and to support nine community events such as an antiques fair, museum pioneer day and a centenary dinner.

Councillor Phil Truscott said the grants had been approved under Round Two of Council’s 2020/21 Community Projects and Community Events grants programs.

“Council’s grants schemes offers a range of opportunities for groups to apply for funding for projects, activities and events that help ensure we have a vibrant community,” he said.

If so, would you consider becoming a volunteer with the Maryborough Animal Refuge?

Since its beginnings back in 1978, volunteers have been the backbone, the drive and the power behind the work of the Refuge.

Right now, the Maryborough Animal Refuge has an urgent need for reliable dog and cat pen cleaners for shifts that start at 7am and go until 10am.

They also require dogwalkers for the same shifts, preferably people who have experience with walking and exercising dogs.

Volunteers can choose which mornings they would prefer to do. It may be only one morning a week, or three or five.

Whatever suits your lifestyle. And the big plus for animal lovers is that you get to interact with cats and dogs that are desperate for a kind word and some affection.

The Maryborough Animal Refuge owes its very existence for over 40 years to Volunteers.

humbling than being in the presence of an animal whose trust you have earned and consequently welcomes you into its world.”

Natalie (Committee President, previously dog pen cleaner and dog walker): “I volunteered as a dog pen cleaner after giving up a highstress government job. I absolutely loved it.

“Even though it could be mucky, It was so calming to be with the dogs, to see them grow to trust me, to get so excited to see me, as though I was the most important person in their world.

“Unfortunately I am too busy on the Committee now, but many is the time I wish I could be back with the animals again.”

Because of frequent road kills, carer Natalie Richardson convinced National Parks and Wildlife that Tandora was the perfect location to establish a new colony free from predators and traffic.

Lindsay will be giving an update on the current situation at the Maryborough Library on May 28 at 1 pm.

Despite challenges, Anne remained determined to raise Ariana with every opportunity that other children receive.

“Every parent wants the world for their child; that doesn’t change when your child has a disability,” Anne said.

“Your hopes for them don’t lower, your determination just increases.”

Anne admits that the journey wasn’t always easy, and that often it felt impossible to connect with the right services, especially in regional areas.

“As with many parents who have a child with a disability, you are always concerned about what will happen when you are no longer able to take care of them.”

Anne began searching for a way for Ariana to learn all the essential skills she needed to look after herself to lead an independent life and soon found STEPS Pathways College.

The College, which opened in 2017, gives young adults with disabilities and autism the chance to learn essential skills and lead independent lives.

Ariana have been in her self-confidence, not only I have noticed it, but our family and all our friends have also commented that she has become incredibly self-confident,” Anne said.

“Ari has no hesitation in using public transport, taxis, or Uber and is very confident in making her own decisions.

“She’s brave and ready to take on the world.”

Since seeing Ariana’s great success at the College, Anne is utilising her experiences and knowledge to create a more inclusive environment for people like her daughter.

Ariana was part of the College’s first cohort and graduated in 2019.

Since graduating, Ariana now lives and travels independently, holds down a job, and has a strong support group of friends. Ariana was even nominated as the Citizen of the Year on the Sunshine Coast.

Recently, Anne joined the executive team of STEPS Pathways College in the hopes of helping other mothers find the same success as her.

Mary and Susan – Sister Rivers of the Fraser Coast LINDSAY TITMARSH OLD timers quite often make this statement, “A drought on the land, also causes a drought in the sea”, meaning that rainfall runoff is vital to the health of marine environments.

Before the Mary River tidal barrage was built in 1982, the river was tidal up to Tiaro, with saltwater encroaching up to that point during droughts.

Since the barrage was built, salinity levels in the river below that barrier have altered because small environmental flows are now trapped behind the wall.

the whole system right up to the barrage, which is 59 kilometres upstream from the river mouth, still rises and falls with the tides if the stream is not in flood.

During periods of low rainfall, saltwater encroaches a bit further upstream every day, but the division between the fresh and salt waters is not a definite cut-off line.

As saltwater has a higher specific gravity (is heavier) due to its salt content, it will flow upstream beneath the freshwater for a considerable distance without the two layers mixing.

This has resulted in prolific mangrove growth now extending upstream to the wall, where previously only an occasional tree grew.

The German Creek system, which is located between the River Heads and Great Sandy Strait has very limited freshwater catchment.

At any given point in time, the Mary River below the barrage, can have downstream sections flowing with saltwater, while the upper reaches towards the wall will be carrying freshwater.

The Mary can be running with a big ‘fresh’, yet nearby German Creek will quite often still be salty.

On odd occasions during severe droughts, the whole lot will be salty.

Irrespective of salt content,

During these times, as the big spring tides flow across the vast shallow tidal flats separating the two systems, the division between fresh and saltwater can easily be followed in knee-high

water – they do not mix.

A large drain which carries stormwater runoff from a big portion of my family property Tandora, flows into nearby Alligator Creek. On one occasion, when the creek was very salty, a localised storm dumped enough rain to make the drain flow.

This happened to coincide with low tide in the creek.

A large block of freshwater settled in the non-flowing tidal water, until it was moved upstream with the tide.

On one of the rare occasions that I walked along the creek bank, I happened to see the different coloured waters passing by.

Alligator Creek is not the official name for the tidal stream that flows for a considerable distance beside Tandora, but in my younger days, almost every ‘old time’ fisherman used that name – Johnnie Creek was never mentioned.

This suggests that the elusive reptiles we now consider to be rare in the Mary River, may not always have been that hard to find.

EVERY second Sunday of May, Australians take the time to honour their mums in celebration of one special occasion — Mother’s Day! in Australia) engage with customers in one of the busiest times of the year.

If you are reading this though, you might be curious about how it all began.

In this post, we look at a bit of history behind Mother’s Day as a tradition and how it came to be.

Moreover, we take a look at the flower that has become a symbol of the occasion here in Australia — Chrysanthemum!

Such information ought to enable people to appreciate the event better than just merely arranging for flower delivery and pickup for Mother’s Day just because it is the norm.

Where did the tradition of giving Mother’s Day flowers in Australia start?

Mother’s Day and the honoured tradition of giving out flowers and other gifts to one’s mum has its roots in the United States where the practice began in the early 19th century.

A woman named Anna Jarvis led a campaign

to recognise Mother’s Day as an acknowledged holiday in honour of her Mother — Ann Reeves Jarvis. Her intentions were straightforward – to honour her mother and encourage others to do the same and recognise the fact that there is no one else on this earth who has done as much for us as our mums.

Over time, Mother’s Day was eventually recognised by countries around the world many of whom had deep-rooted traditions about motherhood.

Australia in particular, follows the observance of the occasion with countries like the United Kingdom and the United States.

One notable figure that has advocated the tradition in Australia is a woman named Janet Heyden who launched a campaign in 1924 sending gifts and honouring mothers struggling with loneliness and old age to recognise their plight.

Many also believe that having the familiar term “mum” in its name also earned it the distinction.

In any case, you can never go wrong sending a bouquet of Chrysanthemum to honour your mum on Mother’s Day.

What is the recognised Mother’s Day flower in Australia?

There is a wide variety and colours to choose from thanks to widespread adoption and hybridisation over the years.

The honour belongs to the Chrysanthemum — a flower that is in season during the Autumn month of May which perhaps helped cement its place as the Mother’s Day flower of choice for most Australians.

Of course, you are not limited only to Chrysanthemum, and you can opt for other kinds of flowers such as roses, tulips and carnations especially when you know that it is your mum’s favourite.

Known primarily for its amazing flowers, the chrysanthemum looks spectacular in bloom. As a garden or potted plant it is rarely taller than 50cm, and is often wider than it is tall, often forming a dome or bun shape. Having been heavily hybridised, there is great variation in the flowers, from classic, flat, daisy-like blooms to almost globe-shaped flowers.

Climate: warm temperate, sheltered areas of cool temperate, milder subtropical areas. All zones as potted indoor plants.

Soil: regular garden soil— avoid clay or sandy soil.

Premium potting mix if growing in containers.

Position: full sun, but will benefit from protection from hot afternoon sun.

Wind protection preferred.

Flowering: late summer through autumn.

Feeding: annual controlled-release fertiliser; supplement with organic fortified liquid feeding.

Watering: only moderate requirements once established in the garden.

In pots, water well when approaching dry.

How to plant and grow chrysanthemum Being a perennial, chrysanthemum is fast to grow and needs the sunlight hours to allow this to happen. This means it likes a full-sun position.

However, if you are in a spot where afternoon sun can get too harsh, give them some protection from this.

If growing for more than a season, your chrysanthemum will require a hard pruning after their season.

If you are growing for larger blooms to cut for the vase, reduce the number of flower buds

that pop up. This will concentrate energy in the smaller number of blooms, resulting in larger individual flowers.

Pests and diseases affecting chrysanthemums Healthy chrysanthemum plants encounter very few pest or disease problems.

Aphids may be an issue on new flower stems, and mites can colonise plants that are too congested.

An annual application of controlled-release fertiliser will keep your mums looking great.

Supplementing this by occasionally liquid feeding will improve general growth and flowering.

Ensure potted indoor plants are in a warm sunny location, but avoid direct afternoon sun. When possible, give them a break outside every few days.

Chrysanthemum does well in typical garden soil, but do avoid any soil where it may get too wet or dry, such as clay or sandy soils.

Planting chrysanthemum Chrysanthemum will perform better if soil is improved before planting.

It’s a great addition to the garden for providing cut flowers.

Blend through some planting compost or wellcomposted manure. Then add controlled-release fertiliser to both the hole and to the surface postplanting. Mulch well with lucerne or pea straw as this will speed up establishment and reduce water demands. Just make sure the mulch isn’t pushed against the stems.

Although chrysanthemum is quite hardy, best performance will come if your chrysanthemum is kept reliably moist. This doesn’t mean wet. In the garden, mulch will help keep soil moisture stable.

In pots, just apply the finger test—stick your finger into the mix and if it’s dry below about 2cm, water gently.

Aussies risky speeding shame DESPITE ongoing efforts to educate road users about their role in reducing the devastating impact of road trauma, new research reveals Australians are continuing to undertake risky behaviours on the roads.

Released by the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) in the lead up to the 15th annual Fatality Free Friday initiative (28 May), the research found speeding remains by far the highest broken road rule, with 78 per cent of Australians admitting to being heavy-footed.

Surprisingly, females are more likely than their male counterparts to speed, with an alarming 81 per cent of female drivers admitting to the risky behaviour.

Worryingly, more than two-thirds of Australians admit to having broken a road rule, with a quarter of people doing so at least once a week.

When it came to the reasons for undertaking these potentially lifethreatening behaviours, half of Australian

drivers said it was due to inattention (50%), followed by the belief that it was safe to do so (30%).

ARSF founder and CEO Russell White said the research highlights the need for further education around the idea that it’s just drivers who suffer the consequences of road risk-taking.

“Tragically, 1,108 people lost their lives on Australian roads last year.

The research shows that a frightening 84 per cent of road users falsely believe that drivers make up the majority of the road toll, when in actual fact more than half are passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists,” Mr White said.

“Individuals have a responsibility to make the right choices when using the roads and it is imperative they understand the devastating consequences their choices can have not just on other road users, but on the wider community.

Fortunately, the ARSF is not alone in understanding the importance of

education and changes to behaviour, with almost half the population agreeing that this is the best way to prevent road trauma.

The research also reveals we can expect to see far more activity on our roads post-Covid, with one in two Australians more likely to go on long road trips rather than flying this year.

ARSF ambassador and motor racing champion Craig Lowndes said this increased road usage means drivers need to be increasingly vigilant on the roads.

“I know better than most the dangers of a highpowered vehicle, and cannot stress enough that the road is not a race track. There is no excuse for dangerous driving no matter what the driving conditions may look like,” Mr Lowndes said.

Federal Member for Wide Bay, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and CoChair of the Parliamentary Friends of Road Safety Llew O’Brien said road safety is everybody’s

business.

“Every driver needs to be mindful of their responsibility to themselves, their passengers, other road users and the community, every time they get behind the wheel,” Mr O’Brien said.

“This worrying research shows anyone on the road - drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians all need to take more care.

“Road trauma has farreaching and lasting consequences for everyone involved - and motorists,

road users, legislators, vehicle manufacturers and law enforcement each have a role to keep our roads and each other safe.”

The research has been released as the ARSF calls on individuals to #ChooseRoadSafety and demonstrate their commitment to reducing the road toll by taking the Fatality Free Friday pledge.

Taking the pledge means promising to always be fit to drive, stay focused on the road, scan the road ahead, keep a safe distance, and to drive

in a way that suits the conditions.

Since its inception in 2007, Fatality Free Friday has grown to become Australia’s largest national community-based road safety program.

While the target is to have zero fatalities on Australian roads on Friday 28 May, the initiative is much more than just a single day, ultimately aiming for long-term community change.

Crabs on the move, fish on the bite winds, but there’s some good weather just around the corner and the fish are still on the bite.

Let’s check out this week’s fishing report.

THE TEAM from FREEDOM FISHING SUPPLIES WELL the Fraser Coast has been hammered by those big South Easterly

It’ll take more than gale force winds to stop our die hard fisho’s, many anglers sticking in close throughout the Mary River and Great Sandy Strait

and for good reason. There have been a surprising number of fish being landed from kilo Bream to 10 kilo Threadfin Salmon.

The Beaver Rock to River Heads stretch has been extremely popular with boaties gathering live bait and trying their hand at stopping a Salmon or Barra - small Herring or Prawns have been doing

the trick.

With last Tuesday’s full moon there has been a lot more water turn and run which have the muddies on the move in the creeks and estuaries and sandies running amok over the sand flats.

Prawns of varied size have been caught around Turkey Strait and Germen Creek.

If you’re chasing some reef fish the bommies in the Strait have also been keeping anglers fed with mixed bags of decent size Estuary Cod, Blackall, Parrot and Grunter.

Drifting between Boonooroo and Tinnanbar in the deeper water is getting the best results.

We are still getting good reports of Winter Whiting.

There are also Tiger and Arrow squid on the flats, walking with a hand spear in the shallows is a lot of fun and gets great results.

Not a lot of size to them yet but they are starting to school up.

If that doesn’t sound appealing you can go on the drift with a squid jig.

First up is Michelle ie The Boss!! With a nice Tiger Squid speared on the flats. Michael was into the Bream, well done mate.

James had a great day out landing a few Barra. Terry landed this nice trout. It weighed in at 4.25kg. Amelia was excited to catch this healthy Bass in Tinana Creek.

Championships add determination BRENDAN BOWERS ATHLETICS: Maryborough athletes Kellie Davies and Zac Ridgely recently returned from the national athletics championships with an added determination to find the little extras to propel them to the next level.

Heal helps juniors with hoops advice

Davies competing in the under 17 age group, competed in discus and shot put.

Finishing in the top ten of both events with a ninth in the shot put and a tenth in the discus, she is determined to return and reach the finals.

“I didn’t throw my best on the day, and it has made me more determined to return and work harder,” she said.

The year eleven Maryborough State High School student will continue training in preparation for the school athletics season.

“I will get back to the nationals again,” she said.

commitment to her training and development.

For Zac Ridgley competing at his first national championships, he enjoyed the experience.

He observed close hand the level required at the top level.

He competed in the under 18 age group in the long jump and triple jump and leapt for a personal best in the long jump.

“I jumped six metres, and sixty centimetres improving by three centimetres,” he said.

Ridgley made the final, finishing seventh.

In the triple jump, he finished eleventh with a distance of twelve metres and seventy-two centimetres.

The year eleven Riverside Christian College student was pleased he made the championships and is determined to return.

“It has shown me that I need to put some extra effort into my training,” he said.

He also thanked his coach Penny Van Dyjk for her support.

BRENDAN BOWERS BASKETBALL: Fourtime Olympian, former NBA player and NBL champion Shane Heal lobbed into Maryborough on Wednesday.

He was there as part of a regional tour organised

by Yellow to continue their ongoing support of regional business and community groups.

Free with his time, Heal joined with Maryborough Basketball coaches to run the juniors through some drills while offering advice and tips to the enthralled basketballers.

“Junior sport is the backbone of regional communities, and sporting clubs are the heart of these towns. They are the place where kids, families and local businesses connect to support and represent their region proudly”, said Shane Heal.

“I am incredibly thankful to Yellow for creating the opportunity to visit these regions and be a part of this community connection.”

“Yellow is proud to be supporting the Hervey Bay Basketball and Maryborough Basketball Associations for the 2021 season. It is great to be able to bring Shane Heal to these local regions to conduct junior training clinics,” Yellow General Manager Elise Balsillie said.

Maryborough Basketball Association’s Publicity Officer Amanda Kratzmann was busily capturing the action with plenty of shots.

“There’s certainly a buzz around the Association.

It’s a wonderful initiative from Yellow to bring talent with accolades like Shane’s, especially in an Olympic year, to

local communities like Maryborough.

To share his knowledge with over 70 of our juniors and the local business community,” she said.

Association treasurer Caleb Wickham believes the clinic will only produce positives for the players.

“It is a great opportunity for the kids to see and hear what it is going to take to take that next step,” he said.

After the clinic, he answered questions from the players. He spoke about what it takes to succeed on and off the court.

He then stayed behind for autographs and photos, leaving a lasting impression on the players.

Heal then met with local business people as part of the Yellow promotion at a business networking function.

SPEEDWAY KARTS: Maryborough Speedway member Dakota Laverty won the inaugural 2020/2021 SKAA Australian Speedway Karts National Champion in Tamworth on the weekend.

It was the first time the ladies division was included at the national championships.

The teenage racer was proud to have her name first on the trophy.

“My name and time is in the books, and they will never take it away from me,” Laverty said.

CRAIG WINTER CONGRATULATIONS to the Maryborough Masters Swim Team who brought home a bunch of gold, silver and bronze from the recent Queensland State Championships on the Sunshine Coast.

Held over three days, the Maryborough Speedway member used Friday’s practise session to familiarise herself with the track before racing in three heats on Saturday.

Sunday included a final heat and the A-Main, with Laverty winning by 2.431 seconds.

She beat home Courtney Dormer and Taneka Johnson, with Maryborough karter Ashleigh Moller finishing fourth.

Laverty did not have it all her way, falling back to third before fighting back to claim the win.

“They watered the track, and my back wheel dug in, but I came back,” she said.

improved on Sunday with a massive temperature rise from Saturday.

“It was a freezing nine degrees on Saturday, but it warmed up on Sunday to 10 degrees,” she said.

It was a busy weekend for Laverty. She also competed in the standard class with troubles mechanically over the weekend. She was disqualified when a bolt came out of her back bar.

She is also building a production sedan intending to race it next season.

“I finished school last year and want to spend some time focusing on racing,” she said.
