CCTV partnership to help catch crims CRAIG WINTER THE sharing of residential and business CCTV footage with police to speed up the identification of criminals was recently promoted in Maryborough. The Community Camera Alliance is a voluntary QPS registration program that allows police to quickly identify offenders before they can escalate their crimes. Residents and businesses have been asked to register their cameras with the Alliance to help slow an apparent recent increase in Fraser Coast offences. Maryborough Patrol Inspector Paul Alge along with Minister for Police and Corrective Services Mark Ryan and local MP Bruce Saunders launched the initiative last week. Police say that similar programs in other regions have proven very effective in the fight against crime. Inspector Alge said that whilst criminals were usually aware of civic CCTV systems, they didn’t know where private and business cameras were located, making it

harder for them to avoid detection.

the identity and actions of offenders.”

“This is all about feeling safer in our region.” he said.

CCTV images can reduce investigation times, resulting in swifter outcomes.

“The Alliance will help build stronger connections with the community and speed up the process of identifying and apprehending criminals before they commit any further offences.” The launch comes amidst community calls for increased sentencing of offenders by the courts. Whilst the Maryborough police boast an efficient apprehension record, culprits are often seen by the public as receiving lenient sentences. Youth offenders who receive a ‘slap on the wrist’ are particularly frustrating to both authorities and residents. CCTV has become a crucial investigative tool in modern policing. CCTV footage is regularly used to investigate and solve often serious crimes and is invaluable when used as evidence. “It provides an unquestionable account of

“Historically, investigators have benefited from CCTV systems in business or commercial premises. “Recent advancements in technology, affordability and accessibility have resulted in more people choosing to utilise CCTV at their homes for safety and security.” Knowing the location of established CCTV systems within the community will maximise the efficiency of investigative resources and minimise the loss of potential evidence. Locating cameras can be time-consuming and resource-intensive but it is crucial, particularly in serious investigations. Once registered, QPS will be able to access the details of your registration for purposes of investigating crime. CCTV footage may be used for court purposes. Security of the information you provide
