JAY FIELDING A MAJOR coup for Maryborough has been secured with Scouts Australia set to announce its major event will be returning to the Heritage City for the second time in 12 years.

Maryborough will be the location of the 2025 Australian Scout Jamboree.

The city’s population will almost double during the event, which is held every three years.

During the 2013 Jamboree in Maryborough, more than

11,500 Scouts, 2000 leaders and 10,000 guests attended.

“They must have enjoyed Maryborough in 2013 to want to come back again,” he said.

Similar numbers can be expected in 2025.

Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said he was excited to learn Maryborough had been chosen to host the event.

“I can remember fondly the last one in 2013 and seeing the huge numbers of tourists and students in scout uniforms walking around Maryborough and seeing how great it was for local businesses,” Cr Truscott said.

“Out of all the destinations in Australia they could pick, to come back is a great vote of confidence in Maryborough.”

During the 12-day 2013 Jamboree, 150 buses packed with Scouts headed out each day for activities across the region. Overnight activities were also held for the first time.

The showgrounds were transformed for the event, with a shopping mall, radio station, newspaper, hospital, fire station and a police and security centre operating.

More than 80 tons of food, most sourced locally, was required for catering.

Family tragedy at Ululah Woolies opening delayed MARYBOROUGH will have to wait a little bit longer for the reopening of its Woolworths supermarket.

Originally the company had planned to welcome back shoppers yesterday but the opening date has now been pushed back three weeks to Thursday, July 7.

JAY FIELDING A MARYBOROUGH family has been shattered by the death of an 18-month-old who was pulled from Ululah Lagoon on Saturday.

Dozens of locals who were at Anzac Park and responded to a call on social media searched for the boy after he went missing just before 5pm on Saturday.

He was found unresponsive in the lagoon 50m away from where he had been last seen.

Locals, many who helped look for him, have left toys and flowers at a makeshift shrine to the boy at the park.

In a now-removed post on Facebook, the boy’s grandmother thanked people who had joined the search.

One resident, who went to the scene to help during the search after seeing a post on Facebook, heard the boy’s mother scream when he was found.

“Thank you to everyone who helped look for my grandson at Ululah Park,” the post said.

“RIP little man.”

“It was a heartbreaking scream,” the resident told Channel 7.

A report will be prepared for the coroner, and police say they will be in regular contact with the family.

Some staff, who had been redeployed to Woolworths supermarkets in Hervey Bay during the closure, have returned to Maryborough to help fill shelves and get the store ready.

CCTV partnership to help catch crims CRAIG WINTER THE sharing of residential and business CCTV footage with police to speed up the identification of criminals was recently promoted in Maryborough.

The Community Camera Alliance is a voluntary QPS registration program that allows police to quickly identify offenders before they can escalate their crimes.

Residents and businesses have been asked to register their cameras with the Alliance to help slow an apparent recent increase in Fraser Coast offences.

Maryborough Patrol Inspector Paul Alge along with Minister for Police and Corrective Services Mark Ryan and local MP Bruce Saunders launched the initiative last week.

Police say that similar programs in other regions have proven very effective in the fight against crime.

Inspector Alge said that whilst criminals were usually aware of civic CCTV systems, they didn’t know where private and business cameras were located, making it

harder for them to avoid detection.

CCTV footage is regularly used to investigate and solve often serious crimes and is invaluable when used as evidence.

The evolution of the Maryborough fire station

by FRASER COAST MAYOR GEORGE SEYMOUR IT IS great to see the progress by the State Government in expanding the Fire Station in the centre of town.

The architecture and streetscapes of Maryborough connect us with our history.

We are very fortunate to have so many significant heritage buildings that have survived.

Sadly there have been some buildings that have been lost over the course of the city’s development.

One building that has sadly been lost is the early Maryborough Fire Station which stood next to the Town Hall Green, where Alowishus Delicious Café now is.

Like other colonial towns, Maryborough frequently suffered from difficult fires.

If a fire broke out in a building men would try to form a bucket brigade, but with a lack of ready water supply and the nature of the flammable timber buildings, they most often were not saved.

The fire of 1876 destroyed

12 premises in the CBD. Fire brigades are now considered an essential service, but it wasn’t until 1881 that they started to be formed in Queensland.

The Maryborough Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed in January 1884.

When it was formed, the fire-fighting equipment was quite basic.

The men relied upon a two-wheeled trolley on a frame, which they had to pull across the town to the site of the fire themselves.

The trolley contained a hand pump, a water barrel and a large hose and reel.

On 29 June 1885 a horse drawn fire engine arrived from England, it was the best equipment available and the first of its type in the young colony.

With a steam powered pump, it could empty 250 gallons per minute to a height of 150 feet.

The engine was aptly named “Progress”.

The first location for the Fire Brigade was on the corner of Kent and Lennox Streets, where the infant

clinic building currently stands, but plans were soon made for a larger, more useful, premises.

Twenty years before the Maryborough City Hall would be built, the Maryborough Fire Brigade was built on Adelaide Street in 1888, next to what would later become the Town Hall Green.

The grand structure had a very prominent tower from which a fire watch could be kept.

At the time of its construction it was reported to be the first brick and mortar fire station north of Sydney, the others all being timber.

When the watchman in the tower saw a fire he would ring the bell.

The number of times he rang the bell identified which part of the town the fire was in so the volunteers at home or work would know where to head.

The horse drawn fire engine was successful in fighting fires across Maryborough, but as cars started to take over the roads, the Fire Brigade looked to modernise and acquire a motorised

fire engine.

Following years of fundraising, in 1921 the Fire Brigade Board purchased a second-hand 1913 British made Alldays vehicle.

It then took two years to convert this car into a fire engine.

When it was finished, the Brigade painted No. 1 on it as it was Maryborough’s very first motorised fire engine.

Unfortunately when the call was received for it to attend its first fire it had to stay behind in the building as it was found to have a flat tyre.

Despite this poor start, No. 1 Fire Engine went on to provide long and good service for the city.

In 1951 the current station was built on the corner of Lennox and Alice Streets – and the station is now being significantly expanded.

The Fire Brigade building, its men, its horses and its motorised fire engines served our community well and laid the groundwork for the excellent service which still bravely fights fires on behalf of our community.

Westpac reopens after floods

MARYBOROUGH’S Westpac branch has reopened – but it won’t be long before it’s closed again.

The branch was closed after it was inundated during February’s flood.

It reopened last week following repairs.

But Westpac Group state general manager Greg Crocombe said the bank was already in the process of relocating the branch to flood-free premises.

“The past few months have been incredibly tough for the people of southeast Queensland and, in particular, Maryborough,” Mr Crocombe said.

“After experiencing two challenging flood events, it’s great to be back with a full banking service for our customers in the region at our existing branch on the corner of Kent and Adelaide Streets,” he said.

“However, we are excited to move to a new location in Maryborough which

will enable us to provide greater continuity of service.

“We remain committed to helping households

A QUEENSLAND Fire and Emergency Services hero based out of Maryborough is being recognised among his peers in the QFES Australia Day Achievement Awards today (June 7 2022) after COVID-19 restriction delays.

Scot Perrie is a First Officer of Maleny & District Royal Fire Brigade, and was instrumental in training volunteers during the Black Summer fires.

New recruits for Wide bay firies FOR Justin Watts, it was a matter of when, not if he would strap on a firefighter’s helmet, pick up a hose, and answer the call for help from those in need.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service’s (QFRS) newest firefighter has been deployed to the Wide Bay, as a life-long dream became a reality this month when he graduated from the Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy (QCESA) at Brisbane.

“From a young age I have always had an interest in being a firefighter and I joined as an auxiliary firefighter when I was 18 years old,” Justin said.

“It is one of those things I have always wanted to do in my life. The other jobs I have had were opportunities that arose, but this career is something I have wanted to do for myself.

“I was an auxiliary firefighter in Charleville in my hometown from 2003 before transferring to Hervey Bay in 2014 and continuing as an auxiliary there.”

It was a family business

for Justin, whose uncles also served their state as firefighters, and it was that close connection that inspired his interest in emergency services.

A butcher by trade, Justin completed an apprenticeship with Ergon 15 years ago, with the past eight spent working on high voltage powerlines in as a Lines Distribution Mechanic in Maryborough and Hervey Bay. If that work wasn’t high voltage enough, bubbling away in the background was Justin’s firefighting career where he learned the ins and outs of station and equipment maintenance, road accident rescues and house fires. A transition to a permanent firefighter role was inevitable.

“The 16 weeks of learning at QCESA was next level, the knowledge and skills you need to be on top of is a lot more in depth, particularly the theoretical side,” Justin explained.

“It’s a great facility with world-class training and the instructors are really good and extremely experienced which helped me get through the program.

“The training was quite intense, so it was beneficial to have some knowledge of the role due to my auxiliary firefighting background just to stay on top of it all.

“What you learn there at the academy, you can apply to real world scenarios. It will be nice to work alongside experienced firefighters on-shift in the Wide Bay

and learn the ropes from them.”

Justin’s aware as a QFRS permanent firefighter, he’ll play a crucial role in the front-line response to emergencies and disasters in the Wide Bay, but his local knowledge and previous experience will hold him in good stead.

“I still get a few nerves, but I have responded to

jobs before which will be helpful. I have not been exposed to all types of emergency situations, but it will be handy to get a few jobs under my belt with my new crew,” he said.

“It is nice to live and work in the same area and I have been doing that with my former job.

It is great to stay local and contribute to the

community in this role, responding to people in need.

“I will be working C-shift at Maryborough but will do a few tours to Hervey Bay at Torquay this month.”

Local gymnasts compete against the best A TEAM of Women’s Artistic Gymnasts from Maryborough GymSports have travelled away for their first competition of the 2022 season.

The group attended the Maroochy Beach Invitational on the 5th of June where they faced intense competition from clubs like Hervey Bay, Warick, Sunshine Coast and some prestigious Brisbane outfits.

In the Level 4 division was Lilly Kraut, Grace Land, Ava Lightbody and Grace McKenna.

This weekend of

competition has been on the calendar all year for the new Level 4 girls to see how they score and for the returning athletes to get back into the competition arena ahead of competing at Level 5 later this year.

Grace McKenna and Grace Land ‘levels tested’ and passed Level 4.

Lilly placed 6th on the Vault in the open division which was an unexpected present for her 16th birthday.

The group was supported by their family and team mates including Glenys

Connell (coach) and Kelsey Connell (judge).

Fellow coaches Jade & Jo from Phoenix (Hervey Bay) helped the group out during their session too.

The club says that spaces for term 3 enrollments in beginner programs for children as young as 2 up to adult are open now.

Pilots urged not to push the safety envelope

Foodbasket moves A MARYBOROUGH organisation that sells food below retail prices to locals on low incomes is on the move.

The Foodbasket will close the doors at its Kent Street premises tomorrow for the last time before reopening at its new shop at 120 Richmond Street on Monday.

In a Facebook post, the organisation said the move had been a long time coming.

“What was going to be a quick tidy up and slight renovation turned into quite a major project which took nearly two years in total.

Take a walk on the wild side THE Fraser Coast Branch of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland is inviting the community to take a walk on the wild side as part of the Society’s 60th Anniversary celebrations.

The Society was created as a community-based, non-profit organisation, co-founded in 1962 by poet Judith Wright, publisher Brian Clouston, naturalist David Fleay and artist Kathleen McArthur.

The Society is made up of a Head Office located in Brisbane with branches spread throughout Queensland.

It is the publisher of the Wildlife Australia magazine.

A second walk offering less strenuous demands will be a 3km circuit walk starting at Gatakers and passing through Parraweena Park Bushland Reserve and back around the beach.

The third walk will meet at Eli Creek and do a Mangrove Walk before driving to Gatakers for lunch.

Branch President Peter Duck is expecting up to 100 participants.

Rotary markets themed for fun THE Maryborough Markets are undergoing a range of improvements as Rotary takes over management of the iconic street stalls.

“We are planning on celebrating the following themes in the coming weeks and are seeking the public’s support in making our markets more fun!” said a Rotary Events spokeperson.

23 June is a STEAMfesta and steampunk theme.

CRAIG WINTER STEAMFESTA returns to the Brolga Theatre on June 26 as hundreds plan to gather to celebrate all things steamy...and punky!

This year’s Steamfest kicks off at the Hervey Bay Historical Village & Museum on Saturday June 25th before heading to Maryborough the next day.

This will be the event’s first time in the Bay, and as a special incentive, organisers are offering free entry for the first 500 people at the gate,

which includes all of the museum exhibits.

The Maryborough event is always free entry.

A family friendly picnic, street performers, steam trains, gadgets, robots and much more is on offer this year, with something to excite everyone.

It’s the costumes however that draw the crowds, and more Steampunks than ever are expected to attend.

Mary pool reopens THE Maryborough Aquatic Centre will reopen on 27 June after being closed for five months for repairs required after two major floods.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour thanked the community for their patience while the work was underway, with residents to be offered free entry on the reopening day (Monday 27 June).

“The Maryborough Aquatic Centre suffered considerable damage as a result of the recent floods with repairs required right throughout the centre,” he said.

“Work needed to be done on all three pools while repairs were also required on the toddlers’ water play area, the gym, the toilets and change facilities, the external showers, the kiosk, the first aid room, the meeting room and the office.

“Constant wet weather slowed down the works, but we are pleased the Maryborough Aquatic Centre can reopen to the community at the end of the month, just in time for the school holidays.

“To celebrate and to thank residents for their patience, we are offering

pool patrons free entry on the reopening day of Monday 27 June.”

Opportunities for local contractors LOCAL tradies and sub-contractors are being urged to register their interest in participating in the construction of the new Fraser Coast Regional Council library and administration building in the Hervey Bay City Centre.

Cr Jade Wellings said while the project was still in the design phase, expressions of

interest were currently being sought from head contractors, with construction work expected to start in 2023 and be completed by 2025.

“Council is partnering with the Australian Government through the Hinkler Regional Deal to improve local economic outcomes and create opportunities in the Hervey Bay City Centre,”

“The development of a new Fraser Coast Regional Council Library and Administration Centre is a key element of the Hervey Bay City Centre Master Plan, which was finalised and adopted by Council earlier this year, following significant community consultation,” he said.

“This is about being bold and building for the future. It’s about creating a social, economic and cultural heart in Hervey Bay.” Cr Wellings said the current Hervey Bay library had about 225,000 visitations a year and was only half the size it should be to meet Australian and Queensland library building standards.

NRL legends help tackle bowel cancer

THE Australian Government, Cancer Council, and the National Rugby League come together to encourage Australians to participate in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.

With the NRL State of Origin having kicked off in Sydney, Australians are being encouraged to take a half-time toilet break during the 2022 series and do a test to help save lives from bowel cancer.

The Australian Government, Cancer Council and the National Rugby League (NRL) have teamed up to encourage eligible Australians to participate in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. The program provides people aged 5074 years with free bowel screening tests every two years.

Putting their competitive spirits aside, former Rugby

League and Origin greats Petero Civoniceva (QLD) and Geoff Toovey (NSW) join Minister for Health, Mark Butler, and Cancer Council CEO, Dr Tanya Buchanan, in Sydney today to urge Australians to #Get2It on bowel cancer screening.

In the spirit of healthy competition, the latest statistics show while Queensland scored an early victory over its NSW neighbours by returning more bowel screening tests (QLD 41.6% vs.

NSW 40.5%), both states trail behind the national participation rate of 43.5%.

Froth is a sign of a healthy river

HEALTHY froth is a natural part of most tidal waterways and beaches.

It is very interesting to watch this froth being formed.

In wild weather, massive amounts can be created by the action of waves crashing onto shorelines.

During lunar cycles, when increasing tidal levels reach a height of 2.9 metres at the mouth of the Mary River, tidal water begins to flood the massive areas of upper-level mangrove forests and open marine flats of the estuary.

In river systems, wind whipping apart wave tops, can create what the old-timers from yesteryear often referred to as ‘white-horses’.

Quite often in a river or creek, a distinct stripe of floating froth can be seen weaving with the current.

As described in the last two editions of the ‘Sun’, it is in the vicinity of this corridor that river prawns travel up and downstream with the current.

Even during extremely calm days, large quantities of froth can quite often be created, with most of it not caused by wind or weather conditions.

Calendar dates throughout the year, and even for years into the future, can be set for the peak of this

First is 3-year-old Queenie - a sweet ex-racing greyhound girl who loves people.

In conjunction with the Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES), its members respond to marine turtle strandings in the area.

Holly will be showing how the initial data collected by the TITR team is showing an alarming increase in marine turtle strandings.

She will explain the reasons for this occurrence which can be due to sickness, disease and injury [especially from plastic pollution and boat strikes]. Holly will also talk about sea turtle biology, species and their status.

Holly has worked with sea turtles around the world including nesting Leatherbacks in Costa Rica and diving with Hawksbill turtles in Barbados.

She is also the project officer for NSW Turtle Watch, helping to

Cullum-Sanders ready for World Cup BRENDAN BOWERS

HOCKEY: Former Wallaroos and Maryborough Hockey player Hannah CullumSanders is primed and ready for a busy July.

After recently playing for Australia in a four-game series in New Zealand, Cullum-Sanders has earned selection in the national team for the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup team to play in Spain and the Netherlands.

“It is exciting, and a bit surreal, and I won’t believe it until the first game at the World Cup gets underway,” CullumSanders said.

The team of 18 athletes selected features a strong line-up of younger talent

with five athletes with under ten games of experience and a further 4 with less than 25 games - highlighting the exciting and bright future of the Hockeyroos for the years to come.

The Hockeyroos’ recent Trans-Tasman Trophy triumph in New Zealand was a pivotal selection trial for the Women’s World Cup. Cullum-Sanders has been traversing the country attending training camps in Western Australia while preparing for the upcoming tournament.

“The training intensity has been invaluable, and I have certainly been forced to step up with the heavier load, but I believe I have improved heaps because of

it,” she said.

“Having made the squad, I know the job is not done, and I must keep working to ensure I stay in the squad.

“One of my goals is to make the Olympics, and there is plenty of work still to do,” Although having moved to Brisbane, she never forgets and acknowledges where she comes from.

“Maryborough Hockey taught me the basics and my love of hockey. It was great to be able to play with family and friends,” The Hockeyroos are in Pool D alongside Belgium, Japan, and South Africa for the 15th edition of the prestigious event that

comprises 16 teams.

All Hockeyroos Pool matches will be played in Terrassa, Spain.

Having won the World Cup twice (1994 and 1998), the Hockeyroos finished fourth at the last tournament in 2018.

The Netherlands are the defending champions.

The Hockeyroos squad will depart for Europe on 16 June.

Maryborough student gains valuable experience

Big wet is paying off everyone is out enjoying the winter whiting craze, with no minimum size and bag limit of 50, most anglers have been bagging out.

MARYBOROUGH State High School student Cailin Putney-Hooper is receiving practical, reallife experience behind the lens of a camera.

She experienced sideline duty at Eskdale Park as Wallaroos hosted ATW in a Bundaberg Rugby League clash.

“I will admit that I was nervous on the car ride to the footy, but once we got there and we went off and started taking photos, it felt great,”

Putney-Hooper is currently working with a local sports photographer to learn the trade tricks to assist in her plans to work as a professional photographer.

She shares her first day on the job.

“My experience on Saturday night was amazing. The way I learn best is to be told what to do and get thrown in the deep end and hope for the best, which is exactly what happened,”

“When we were at the footy, it was good lighting (not the best but good), and we moved with the game. I got a few good shots and learned to get even better ones,” she said.

She then moved on to the Wide Bay Premier League with Granville hosting the KSS Jets.

“We moved up and down the sideline at the league, but we stayed stationary for the football due to the fast pace of the ball.

“I’m not used to having to keep taking photos all at once to hope to get the shot. It isn’t normal to me, but I felt more comfortable once I got into it.

Picking the days and tides getting out to our reefs, whether they are in or outside the bar, boaties were rewarded with some great eating fish including snapper, squire, scarlets are at the top of the list and plenty of sweeties, cod and blackall as well.

At this time of year

The best places are spots like Gatakers Bay, Toogoom, Burrum and the deeper waters of the Sandy Strait to name a few.

The Gulp blood worms are still one of the most popular baits.

Still some nice flathead being caught in the gutters and on the flats of the Strait and the big summer whiting are starting to make an appearance.

The mighty Mary is slowly cleaning up with great reports of threadfin salmon, blue salmon, silver and black bream and grunter being caught between Beaver Rock and River Heads..

The mud crabs are still running with Poona, Tuan and Maaroom all crabbing well.

The size and quality coming out of the Strait is the best we’ve seen for a long time.

Sand crabs are starting to put in an appearance with a few being caught. They will only get better.

The water in the Strait is still dirty however and we are receiving a lot of Squid reports.

Either walking the flats at night with a hand spear and spotlight or using a squid jig out in the boat are getting results.

Finally, just a quick reminder that a closed season on our Australian Bass is current in tidal waters. You cannot keep or even target wild bass until the 1st of September.

Australian bass season is closed during the winter months as they migrate to parts of estuaries for spawning.

This closure protects Australian bass during their spawning period to ensure they can remain a popular catch for many generations to come.

You can still chase them at any of the stocked impoundment dams after obtaining a freshwater fishing permit.
