CRAIG WINTER PICTURES like these do not inspire confidence in visitors to the Fraser Coast hoping to spend some time on Fraser Island over Christmas.

Local whale-watching stalwart Vicki Neville aboard Tasman Venture shot these amazing photos over the weekend as changing wind directions altered the effects of the blaze almost hourly.

The fire has been so intense as to start creating it’s own weather system, and pyrocumulus clouds have begun to form above the sand island.

by a rising column of hot air coming off fires, and when it rises rapidly, it cools, forming the familiar mushroom shapes.

Maryborough sugar mill closure confirmed JAY FIELDING MARYBOROUGH’S 126-year-old sugar mill has crushed cane for the final time.

Last week Maryborough Sugar Factory confirmed, as expected and reported previously in the Maryborough Sun, this year’s crush would be the final one.

Preparations for the mill’s closure had begun months ago, and intensified after MSF sold off about 5000 hectares of its cane farms to an investment fund that plans to grow macadamias.

Under grower contracts, MSF still needs to crush Maryborough and Sunshine Coast cane next year and in 2022.

That cane will now be trucked to a yet-to-bebuilt loading point where it will be transferred to cane trains and delivered to Isis Central Sugar Mill in Childers.

Stakeholders have requested assistance from the federal and state governments, both of which have already been involved in discussions.

The plan suits the grower-owned Childers mill, which is looking to increase its output and

Canegrowers Maryborough chairman Jeff Atkinson said MSF had informed growers and mill workers of the closure via email last week.

“We knew it was coming,” he said.

Mr Atkinson said the confirmation meant plans to crush at Childers would now be put in place and gave growers certainty.

“It enables us to get right on and get through the rest of the issues.”

The company met growers at a meeting in Maryborough on Monday.

ETHICAL MEAT

As a person who considers themselves a good thinker, and being environmentally aware, I seethe when I see programs like Landline on ABC last Sunday, where self-righteous yuppies living in cities, pass judgement on our farmers, who are without a doubt some of the most environmentally conscious people in our country and the world. After all their future depends on good practice.

As our food producers struggle with a tsunami of regulations and criticism, these supposedly moral, high-grounded folk load, along with their ethically raised produce, large bundles of disposable nappies into their gas guzzling vehicles, to go home and drink their pod coffee, all the time feeling very smug about the fact that they are doing the world a favour.

It’s a bit like the children in schools who raise money to save the whales, while throwing their plastic lunch wrappers on the ground.

Let’s get some real thinking into this debate,

and look at the footprint of everything we buy, not just our food and let our farmers continue to struggle to produce high quality food, without living with the condemnation of cashed up city dwellers.

DISABILITY ROYAL COMMISSION INTERIM REPORT

I acknowledge the courage of those who have already come forward and shared their experiences, and I applaud the Commission’s commitment to creating a safe, inclusive and accessible environment for people who wish to disclose abuse.

I welcome the Disability Royal Commission’s interim report on its first 15 months of operations.

There are many lessons to be learnt from the evidence shared with the Royal Commission by people whose lives have been impacted by violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.

The interim report highlights many of the far-reaching challenges people with disability experience, from policy and funding constraints, sector practices and interfaces with other mainstream services to a lack of understanding and undesirable community behaviour.

Abuse is not inevitable for people with disability and must not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The report makes special note of the difficulties of reaching all people with disability who have experienced abuse.

We all must listen to people with disability who are speaking out in the Royal Commission, so our nation can become a place where people with disability feel safe, valued, and free to live the lives of their choosing.

For this reason, Endeavour Foundation continues to encourage all people with disability to contact the Commission or an advocacy organisation

CRAIG WINTER WE’RE all looking forward to the end of the year.

As the last few weeks of 2020 roll around, I can finally see a glimmer of the Christmas spirit around the town.

I attended the lighting of the Maryborough Christmas tree last Sunday, and the excitement of the kids to see Santa Claus and Mary Christmas was palpable. The joy spreads!

I encourage you to attend a few festive events in the lead up to Christmas.

Council has it’s online Concert starring Wendy Matthews and Isaiah Firebrace on December 19th at 6.30, live on YouTube and with some tickets available to watch it live at the Brolga.

You may not be used to the technology that will bring that concert to us, but I would encourage you to give it a try and embrace the new ideas that we need to get used to. You will enjoy it!

For all the doom and gloom that COVID brought up this year, it also did some good

Businesses have been exceptionally busy since we reopened in July with many reporting that it’s their best few months ever.

Because of the stimulus packages, there is money in the pockets of those who didn’t have any before, and as much as some of us are critical of the spending, I spoke to one employee (not one of mine) who says that he and his wife have managed to pay down almost all of their debt including a small personal loan and their credit card.

They’re up to date on rent and have eliminated the worst of their monthly bills.

They even had a tax debt from a small business they once owned, and that has also been paid off.

They’re better off by far.

Those who took advantage of the stimulus and didn’t spend it partying are going into 2021 with money in the bank and less bill stress than ever.

There are of course people who have gone backwards this year. How about the poor travel agents? Now there’s some businesses that really need our help right now.

If you’re planning a holiday anywhere, please consider seeing your local travel agent instead of booking online.

They still have to pay their rent, insurance, utilities etc and have no income at all for the foreseeable future.

If you want to go overseas once the borders reopen, book a trip with your agent with a guarantee that you’ll be refunded or rebooked if the closures continue beyond your travel date.

Now that they know what they’re dealing with, it’s safe as houses.

And if you book in advance, they’ll be able to budget for next year and keep their doors open.

Adversity brings people together, and the past few months have shown that to be true.

There were the hoarders and conspiracy theorists of course, but as vocal as they were, they were also in the minority.

If we just get about our business, the next few months will be good to us, and a lot of what we once deemed as normal, will return.

Twenty more diplomas for community workers mostly dealt with managing trauma, abuse histories and relevant cultural issues, as well as case planning, referral networks and working within the community services sector to bring about positive outcomes.

JAY FIELDING A GROUP of locals has proved to be a class act, completing important qualifications.

Twenty indigenous people have graduated with diplomas, 19 in Child, Youth and Family Intervention and one in Community Services.

“We talk a lot about advocacy, and helping these workers advocate for (children),” Mr Bradford said.

The qualification will lead to new job opportunities and payrises for some, and further study for others.

The training was facilitated by local indigenous community development organisation MCDATSIC. It was delivered by David and Angela Bradford from the DaV’ange Group and Bradford Institute of Advanced Education.

“Fundamentally, we do a lot of work on communication skills and how they can develop trust, build rapport and build the helping relationship with these kids in order to be able to actually assist them,” he said.

Mr Bradford said the course helped develop skills and also recognised the experience students had with vulnerable children.

“Just showing up and saying to a kid ‘Do you want help?’ isn’t particularly helpful, unless you’ve actually held rapport and you’ve got the sort of relationship with them that helps you do that.”

“For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people there are a lot of opportunities out there but sometimes they don’t know how to go about that,” she said.

“I was getting a lot of phone calls from people wanting to see if they could bring their trailers in and I said to my husband ‘You know what, I think I need to do something like this to fill

A NEW honour board at the Maryborough Military Aviation Museum will commemorate the region’s Second World War Royal Australian Air Force personnel, after receiving funding through the Australian Government’s Saluting Their Service program.

Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Llew O’Brien said the Military Aviation Museum received $3,900 through the program, which supports projects that honour Australia’s armed forces and preserve military history.

The honour board was unveiled by Cyril Barbeler whose older brother Gerard, a Flight Sergeant with the No. 12 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force, was tragically killed aged just 21, when his aircraft was shot down in an air-fight over Germany on 16 March, 1945.

Sergeant Gerard Barbeler and many others from the Maryborough region, will never be forgotten,” Mr O’Brien said.

“For local families like the Barbelers, and the loved ones of the 61 other service personnel whose names are engraved on this board, it is a meaningful recognition of what they have lost so that we may enjoy our Australian lifestyle today.

The boards were built by the Maryborough Community and Men’s Shed.

Maryborough waterpark on schedule Munitions jobs JAY FIELDING

EXPRESSIONS of interest are being sought from tradies who want to work at Maryborough’s $60 million munitions factory.

WORK on Maryborough’s water park is going swimmingly.

A group of local politicians recently toured the site, nestled between the skate park and playground at Anzac Park, as it begins to take shape.

The forging and manufacturing plant, being built just north of Maryborough, is a joint venture between Rheinmetall and Nioa Pty Ltd.

Despite a small design change causing a slight delay, the project is on schedule and due to open in about six months.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour, councillors Paul Truscott and Daniel Sanderson and Maryborough MP Bruce Saunders were shown around the site by project manager Peter Abood from PBS Building Services.

They were impressed with what they saw and said the water park would complement the existing offerings including skate park, playground and netball and tennis courts.

The group inspected earthworks and piping and was given an outline about where features, due to be installed in February, will be located.

They were pleased to learn only five trees had to be removed for the project.

Cr Sanderson revealed that the community will be asked to name the new water park.

He said branding and signage would be designed to match Wetside’s.

The group discussed potential opening hours and lighting, which have yet to be decided by the council.

It will produce artillery shell cases and other munitions-related products for supply to the Australian Defence Force and for export to allied nations around the world.

Similar opening hours to Wetside, Hervey Bay’s water park, were suggested.

But, given the facility will be unfenced and unstaffed, it could potentially operate later into the night on weekends and for special events.

Concerns were raised about nearby residents, who have been consulted about the park, but it was noted that the skate park, which is used at night, had not caused issues.

The zero-depth water park will boast fountains, water jets, waterfall, slide, sensory wall and a 600L “spoonful of sugar” discharge water bucket.

It will also have shaded seating, barbecue areas, toilets, a pump room and a space that will be available for food and drink vans.

The advertisement says the company wants employees who align with its way of working with a focus on safety, teamwork, innovation and excellence. It says it values diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace.

Successful candidates will also need high ethical standards, a strong hands-on mentality and be process driven but also flexible.

The company says nonskilled and entry-level positions at the factory will be advertised at a later date.

Meanwhile, work has also now begun on a signalised pedestrian crossing on Alice St at the skate park.

The State Government has also promised a major redevelopment and upgrade of the tennis complex so it can host higher-level tournaments.

Hervey Bay Ambulance Wheel cancelled for 2020 THE hugely popular Hervey Bay Ambulance Goods Wheel at Scarness Park has been cancelled this year due to COVID. The Wheel attracts hundreds of Fraser Coast families every

night over Christmas, with over 10,000 tickets sold each year over 20 nights. Proceeds are used to upgrade Ambulance equipment and assist local paramedics.

Watch out for online shopping scams this holiday season LOSSES to online shopping scams have increased 42 per cent this year, and Scamwatch is warning Australians to be careful when buying gifts this holiday season.

Scamwatch has received over 12,000 reports of online shopping scams so far this year, with almost $7 million in reported losses.

Maryborough Players are keen to once again be on stage.

DUE to COVID, the Maryborough Players made the necessary decision to postpone the 2020 production of Cinderella Enchanted.

In February this year, the group was impressed by the level of talent and were impressed they discovered in the lead up to auditions.

The story of Cinderella is a classic where ‘love conquers all’, and of course, in all fairy tales there is always a heroine (Cinderella),

hero (Prince Charming), ‘baddies’ (stepmother, and two stepsisters) and a magical character (Fairy Godmother).

Cinderella Enchanted is an adaption for the stage by Tom Briggs from the teleplay by Robert L Freedman, of the Rodgers & Hammerstein’s favourite Cinderella.

This production can be enjoyed by all the family, and will showcase the immense amount of local talent, not only in acting and backstage skills and knowledge, but also in music, song and dance.

This year, Maryborough Players Inc celebrated its 71st anniversary as a community theatre.

“Over the past 71 years, our theatre company has produced a variety of productions which have entertained and enthralled audiences not only across the Fraser Coast region, but in other areas of South East Queensland.” said Gail.

“More people have been shopping online this year due to COVID-19 restrictions and scammers are now targeting people doing their Christmas shopping, including in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said.

“Scammers create fake websites that look like genuine online stores, offering products at very low prices and victims will either receive a fake item or nothing at all.”

Maryborough Fire Brigade A BRIEF HISTORY

TREVOR McTERNAN DESPITE efforts to form a fire brigade from as early as 1864, the first recorded brigade was on 12 July 1882 when 21 members enrolled, and Mr D. Kerr was elected Superintendent.

The Brigade has operated from three locations - cnr Kent and Lennox St 1884 - 1887, Adelaide St near Kent St 1887-1951 and at the cnr of Lennox and Alice Streets (1951In 1885 a Merryweather steam pumper arrived.

This appliance was called “Progress” and cost 500 pounds ($1000) being the most expensive engine in the colony at the time.

At this time a fireman was paid two shillings (20cents) an hour when attending a fire and one shilling and six pence (15 cents) while training.

The Adelaide Street station was the first brick and stone fire station north of Sydney with an 82 ft tower from which the watchman could observe all parts of the city and give warning of a fire.

The city was broken into six zones. When the watchman noticed a fire, he would give several staccato rings to gain attention and then toll one to six denoting the zone.

car called an “Alldays and Onions” and entered service in 1925. The first time it was to be used it had a flat tyre and the horse was again used to pull the steamer.

The only recorded Brigade fatality was in 1905 when the fire horse “Dolly” was engulfed in a tongue of flame while at a fire at the Southern Cross Hotel in Lennox St (on cnr of Ellena St).

The horse was trained to remain stationary which is what it did, despite its burns. The horse had to be destroyed.

Also, in 1905 the brigade was called upon to burn down a house in which Pneumonic plague victims had died to reduce the risk of wider infection.

The brigade has attended many major fires over the years including several sawmills, sugar mill, many hotels, car dealerships, shops and innumerable houses.

One interesting fire was Denham’s Warehouse in 1927.

The warehouse stored ten ammonia cylinders which, as a result of the heat, exploded, peeled back like a banana, and shot through the air for several hundred metres.

The off-duty firemen would then travel to the indicated zone of the city to assist.

One cylinder passed through the front wall of a nearby house and caused fatal injuries to the occupant.

The Brigade had at least 13 trailer pumps which would allow water to be pumped from the Mary River and through a system of “pump relays”, to provide a reliable source of water for firefighting in the event of water mains being damaged by bombing.

These drills continued until the early 1960’s during the Cold War period.

As technology changed, so did the brigade equipment. The Wheeled Escape (as seen in the display) was replaced by the hydraulic platform and larger appliances and pumps came into service.

While no longer independent, the Maryborough Brigade is part of the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and still provides a much need service to the district.

An exert from a poem written in 1925 by “Bannerman” called the “Old Brigade” is as true now as it was then.

“Like heroes they did fight the flames in years now past and gone. Whenever danger showed its head ‘twas there our heroes shone”.

Irrespective of era, that is what firefighters have done throughout history and continue to do so today.

Challenge won by Mary duo

AVA Smith and Skyla Birch from St Mary’s College recently won the Queensland Premiers Coding Challenge.

They competed in the Year 7-8 Python/JavaScript/ HTML Pairs Category.

The Premier’s Coding Challenge is an annual state-wide initiative open to all Queensland students in Year 3 to Year 10, to encourage and foster a love of technology, coding and development.

The Virtual presentation was live streamed across the state and was broadcast at the College assembly.

St Mary’s College always encourages interested students to participate in the competition with the 2020 challenge set to code an interactive and innovative digital solution to raise awareness of cybersecurity.

From explaining the importance of cybersecurity, to planning a digital solution for a specific audience, writing an algorithm, turning the algorithm into visual block code using Scratch or text-based code using HTML or Python, all the way through to supporting a self-evaluation of the prototype and filming a video explanation of their

design.

Ava, Skyla and other students were encouraged to enter as part of the College Makerspace (The CITADEL).

“We would like to thank Ms Patterson and Mrs T for helping in the setup, the recommendations and coding advice” To enter the challenge, the students began by learning a new languageAva explained “We really wanted to challenge ourselves but we first had to learn HTML code” Skyla said “I think the hardest thing was, we had all these ideas, but we really had to limit them down and find a general idea what we wanted.

“Then we were able to adopt things and take things away to streamline it.”

The girls created their entry - a website, using HTML code, they then utilised the College CITADEL equipment to transfer the website onto a Raspberry Pi device which they set up as a web server.

Ava said “We got our friends and other students in the library to test it and tell us what they thought, we could kind of tell if

they found it exciting, and we found what we had to do after that.”

Ava and Skyla have a real passion for STEM which they share with their peers.

As a duo, the girls have become regular winners of technology based awards, in January 2020, the won the Young STEM Award at the Fraser Coast Australia Day Awards.

In 2019, the girls won the Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Awards and won a trip to Sydney. From that they were invited to apply to be SheEO Activators as part of a Queensland Government Initiative that sponsored 10 women to be Activators.

Ava and Skyla reviewed businesses asking for funding from SheEO in 2020 and voted on which women-led venture should receive the money.

These sessions were held online and continued through COVID19 lock down.

Who’s stealing the spanner crabs?

A USC study will determine if sharks are wrongly getting a bad rap for taking a bite out of Australia’s commercial spanner crab industry.

USC marine biologist and shark specialist Dr Bonnie Holmes said fishers retrieving crabs from nets were finding crabs with missing limbs – or sometimes with only the claws remaining – and were blaming sharks for stealing their catch.

Australia is the world’s largest spanner crab fishery with 80 percent of the total catch coming from Queensland’s South East and Wide Bay regions.

“It is important to understand what issues may be negatively impacting the sustainability of the fishery, part of a multimillion-dollar industry worth between $3.5-$6.8 million per annum,” Dr Holmes said.

“To find out exactly what is going on below the water, I am attaching cameras to the commercial fishing nets, as well as collecting environmental condition data,” Jackson said.

“We do know that sharks aren’t the only predators – overseas studies have found that rays, squid, moray eels, large fish and sea birds also prey on them,” Jackson said.

“The cameras will allow us to identify what species are eating these crabs and if the rates of this depredation can be predicted by monitoring different locations, different seasons and other environmental factors such as currents, wind conditions and water chemistry.”

After completing a degree in Animal Ecology at USC Fraser Coast last year, Jackson said he jumped at the chance to continue working with world-class lecturers, Dr Holmes and Dr Kathy Townsend, a renowned marine biologist.

IMAGINE the chaos if, because of rising sea levels, modern civilisation had to relocate to higher ground, all of the cities located just above sea level.

if that strip is lost to erosion or other natural occurrences, replacements soon become established, guaranteeing that in 50 or so years, all will look similar again.

This scenario did not eventuate because fortunately, modern cities did not exist during the decline of the last Ice Age. However, Earth’s vast mangrove forests did exist, and yes, they did have to relocate.

Not so with their estuarine cousins. Here, healthy mangroves can be found growing more than a kilometre inland from a tidal watercourse.

When compiling the three books I have produced, I tended to favour the conservative side and to not exaggerate facts.

I have stated that during the Ice Age, sea levels were ‘110 metres lower than at the present time’.

Maybe stretching the imagination a little, recently in the ‘Sun’ I wrote that sea levels were 110 to 120 metres lower.

Some scientists now suggest that levels were in fact an incredible 130 metres lower than they are now.

With the melting of the vast northern ice fields and glaciers, variable sea level rises averaging almost one metre per century occurred. How did the mangroves handle this unimaginable situation – with much difficulty?

Mangroves growing upstream a considerable distance from the coast, usually occupy only a narrow strip beside the water. In most cases,

As previously written in the ‘Sun’, mangroves cannot grow even a few inches below mean sea level, because they must spend half of their time out of tidal water. This means that in our local district they have only a strip with a two-metre difference in elevation to grow in. What happened when half of that strip was overtaken by sea level rise every century?

Scientists suggest that in some cases, mangroves can trap sediment and leaves to raise the level of the mud they are growing in, but none could handle a 100 mm [4 inch] rise every 10 years, which occurred as the ice thawed.

Back in the day of massive sea level rises, there must have been just a mixture of mangroves all over the place.

If bands were ‘in fashion’ at that time, then in no time at all those species that now prefer waterside real estate would have found themselves drowned, and those that like the back blocks would have been at the forefront – for a few years only.

With sea levels stabilising around 7 000 years ago, the system has had many centuries to establish itself.

The thawing of the Ice Age must have been a worldwide nightmare not only for mangroves, but for the animals that lived in them as well.

As nearly all the old grey mangroves have hollow trunks and branches, those in our district are now perfect habitat for micro-bats, which are so important for insect control. During the thaw there could not have been any old mangroves.

Of all the trees on Earth, mangroves would have suffered the most during a time of massive sea level rise. The mainland trees would have just drowned, but mangroves would have had to seriously rearrange their whole lifestyle for at least 100 centuries.

There are also references in the Bible and medieval documents that show herbs were used by most households.

Growing herbs is something that is very beneficial to gardeners for several different purposes.

Herbs may be used to flavour food, for potpourri, for tea, for medicinal purposes or to even control pests in the garden.

Herb gardens can be specialized towards one of these specific areas or a mixture of a few different purposes.

They can also be grown in a garden with other species of plants or in containers indoors.

ADVANTAGES Herb gardening offers several advantages, such as homegrown herbs, access to food, as well as fragrance and beauty for your garden.

A herb garden or any garden for that matter is a way to express yourself.

You can change with the seasons just as your garden does and add colour to a grey day.

It gives you an excuse to get outside on a grey day and enjoy all the colour that you might have missed inside avoiding the weather.

Adding coloured pots and sculptures can brighten a winter and add more contrast to the colours of spring, summer and fall.

A garden can change your moods and make you feel good by just being there with the smells and beauty all around.

Herb gardens can be grown in different ways such as

an indoor herb garden in the kitchen or a small plot in the garden. A small plot of four feet by six feet is a large enough area to support a small family.

Although a popular use for herbs are for cooking known as culinary herbs, they are also grown for their aromatic foliage and some for the beauty of their flowers. They can be used fresh or dried. Some herbs are used as garnish for plates or salads while other types of herbs can be used to perk up the flavour of a dish.

PLANTING HERBS Like all other plants herbs grow as annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees. When planting herbs, you should use well-drained soil. If you find that your soil is heavy or compacted, you can add organic matter to it. Fertilizers are not necessary either.

Most herbs prefer a sunny location although a few prefer full shade. Many herbs will grow well with afternoon shade.

Amazingly, very few diseases or insects attack herbs. Sometimes in dry, hot weather red spider mites can be found on lowgrowing plants and aphids may attach dill, caraway, anise, or fennel. Rust can also affect mint.

Herbs can be bought from a nursery store and planted into a home garden or they can be grown from seeds. It is an honour and a joy to

be able to see a plant be grown from a single seed.

You are able to enjoy every step of the process from birth to death in a respect.

When growing a plant like an herb from a seed the experience is all the more rewarding because herbs are so useful.

Almost all herbs can be grown from a seed. Seeds should be placed in a shallow pot or box in the late winter. Use a light, well-drained soil to grow your seeds in. Since herbs do not have a deep root base, make sure not to cover the seeds too much with the soil. They should be planted shallow. Follow the rule: the finer the seed, the shallower it should be sown.

You can transplant the seedlings to the outdoors in the spring. Although most herbs can be grown from seeds, some herbs do not transplant well. Herbs like dill, fennel, anise, and coriander should be planted directly into the garden.

Although growing herbs in a home garden is extremely easy and worthwhile, there is a lot of information you need to know and understand about herbs.

Women with a VIEW to help

A NEW boat ramp, foreshore upgrades, walking trails and green waste transfer stations are among the priority projects identified in the Poona Community Infrastructure Plan.

Despite the gloomy predictions of “No one wants to do community service any more” and “You’ll never get something going with COVID in our lives”, almost 50 women have signed up for Maryborough’s new VIEW Club and are taking on the role of fund raising for the Smith Family Foundation.

VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) was first formed 60 year ago to assist women who were disadvantaged in some way and needed a hand up.

Gradually as new social services were introduced, the need for the original role lessened, but the needs of many families grew.

A partnership was formed between the Smith Family and VIEW and an amazing 49,000 children have benefited from this over the years.

Poona Plan endorsed

At its meeting this week, Fraser Coast Regional Council adopted the plan, which outlines the community’s priorities and vision for Poona.

Late Friday at the Maryborough RSL, over 90 people gathered to celebrate the birth of the new club, and 60 years of VIEW in Australia.

Badges of office were conferred, toasts were made, and amidst much hilarity, the Chicken Dance was performed to mark the “hatching” of VIEW Maryborough.

The club has monthly meetings and low-key social gatherings to raise the funds required to

sponsor children in our area.

This is a place for women who have a heart for education and social justice can help in their own small way to changes the lives of children through uniform and book supplies, and mentoring of the children and their families.

“The plan is the culmination of a large body of community engagement,” Cr Daniel Sanderson said.

“There was significant input from the Poona Community Progress Association, residents, Council officers and staff from various government departments.

“The plan outlines a number of projects ranging from developing a network of walking trails, a communal green waste collection area to create mulch

for the community to a community bus driven by volunteers.

“We can now start allocating funds to the various projects in future Council budgets or engaging with the Queensland Government to become involved in projects.”

Individual projects range from small pathway projects of $20,000 to a new boat ramp on Poona Creek, which will require State Government funding and approval.

“I commend the Poona community for the time

and effort they have invested in developing the plan and articulating the vision they have for the future of their community,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

“The development of this plan has set the benchmark for Council as we develop community infrastructure plans for our smaller communities.”

Local musician finds silver lining in grant RADF grant a silver lining for Fraser Coast musician REGIONAL Arts A $5,000 Development Fund (RADF) grant in August 2020 was the silver lining Fraser Coast musician Leonie Kingdom needed in a very bleak year.

Fraser Coast Councillor Phil Truscott said Kingdom was had just started an Australian tour when COVID-19 struck and the nation went into lockdown.

“She’s been in New South Wales since March when boarder restrictions came into place,” he said.

“With the help of her RADF grant, Leonie has used the time to record and start promoting her new four-track EP.” Kingdom said her new song, titled 2020, was a comedy, which was different from her IndiPop style.

Lions donation improves patient access

Tougher power-of-attorney laws needed to protect the elderly LEADING law firm Maurice Blackburn is urging states and territories to consider introducing rules to ban paid carers from being used as powers of attorney, describing it as an important safeguard against elder abuse.

The push comes as new laws take effect in Queensland from November 30 that says a person cannot be appointed as your enduring power of attorney if they have been a paid carer for you within the past three years.

PATIENTS at Maryborough Hospital have easier and safer access to shower facilities thanks to a generous donation by the Lions Club of Maryborough.

The hospital received a new Electra bariatric hygiene shower chair thanks to the Lions Club of Maryborough fundraising $10,000 through their numerous activities across the town.

“The Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service thanks our wonderful friends at the Lions Club of Maryborough for their donation of a much-needed bariatric hygiene shower chair to Maryborough Hospital,” Maryborough

Hospital nursing director Bronwyn Ramsay said.

“It’s a really important piece of support equipment that enables our patients with mobility issues to get out of bed and safely access a shower.

“The chair is really fantastic for our patients and will be well-used, so we’re really grateful that the Maryborough Hospital Auxiliary was able to purchase it thanks to this generous donation by the Lions Club.”

The Lions Club of Maryborough obtained the funds to purchase the chair thanks to the wonderful sausage sizzles, burgers and chips they

sold locally at community events as well as their catering of lunches and breakfasts.

“We really appreciate the ongoing support of the Lions Club as they’ve been a long-term supporter of Maryborough Hospital,” Ms Ramsay said.

“On top of the shower chair, the Lions Club has previously donated special chairs for day surgery, a large screen TV for the waiting area and supported the costs of establishing the healing garden.

“They’re a wonderful group who do so much for the hospital, but also the wider Maryborough community.”

Besides Queensland, Victoria is the only other state with laws that prohibit a paid carer from being appointed as your enduring power of attorney, but the Victorian rule only applies to current paid carers.

An enduring power of attorney is a legal document in which a person appoints someone to make important financial and personal decisions on their behalf.

The power continues if and when the person is unable to make decisions on their own.

“We know there have been cases where a paid carer holding a person’s power of attorney has misused that power for their own benefit, such as taking money, transferring assets

and incurring debt.

“We acknowledge the vast majority of paid carers do incredible work in looking after older and more vulnerable people in our community. But unfortunately there will always be some who will exploit that position of trust for personal gain.

“We welcome Queensland’s move to tighten restrictions around the use of paid carers as powers of attorney, and we call on all states and territories to follow Queensland and Victoria’s lead to help protect our elderly from abuse.”

Mr Simpson said if a person did not have any family or close friends they trusted to be a power of attorney, they could appoint an independent public trustee in that role.

Feedback sought on adding baby clinic building to Local Heritage Register

THE Fraser Coast Regional Council is calling for feedback on a proposal to place the former Maryborough Baby Clinic on the Fraser Coast Local Heritage Register.

The single-storey building on the corner of Kent and Lennox streets was built around 1923-1924 as part of a government scheme to cut infant deaths. “Thousands of

babies would have passed through the building over the years,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

“Its simple, yet elegant style, forms part of the streetscape of Kent Street and the historic atmosphere of the CBD.”

The Queensland Heritage Council is also considering listing the building on the

state heritage register.

In its submission to the Queensland Heritage Council, the Heritage Unit of the Department of Environment and Science described the building as important in demonstrating Queensland’s response to the movement to reduce infant mortality and improve maternal health during the 1920s.

The report also recognised the building’s aesthetic significance through the skillful use of NeoGeorgian architectural stylistic features, symmetrical composition, open central porch with columns, hip roof with flèche, the building is an attractive, well-composed design.

While Council bought the building this year

as part of its plans to redevelop the site of the former Council Kent Street administration centre and toy library, the future use of the building has not been decided.

The building would need significant work to bring it up to usable standard.

Works proposed to bring the building to a usable standard could include

demolishing an addition to the back of the building and non-functional kitchen, reconfiguring to possibly allow connection to a new development and disability access, flooring upgrades, air conditioning and adding an accessible toilet.

Drivers win with fuel price trial to be made permanent

QUEENSLAND’S fuel market will be changed forever after both Labor and the Liberal National Party answered RACQ’s calls to make a trial into mandatory fuel price reporting permanent.

RACQ applauded both parties after they put drivers first and committed to real-time fuel price monitoring in Queensland if elected.

Club spokesperson Renee Smith said this was a real win for motorists who would be able to continue to use apps and websites to make informed decisions about where they filled up.

“We fought hard for this opportunity for drivers to have free access to information about when and where to fill

up, ensuring they could save the most amount of money,” Ms Smith said.

Caravan/RV safety campaign launched THIS month sees the launch of Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s ‘Caravan / RV Road Safety’ initiative.

THE Fraser Coast has become the latest focus of scammers with fake vehicle sale ads appearing on both Hervey Bay and Maryborough buy and sell Facebook pages.

In preparation for an expected take up in domestic road trip camping holidays this summer and with over 741,000 registered RV’s, throughout December education and awareness will be important in preparing Australians to safely enjoy their holidays.

In the coming months, approx. 14 million nights and 3.3 million camping trips or more are expected to be taken.

Each day road safety information regarding pre-planning your trip to manage fatigue, appropriate use of rest stops including truck rest areas, vehicle preparation, sharing the road with trucks, UHF communication and towing will be promoted and shared.

This information is relevant for all road users regardless of experience.

Six tips for safe holiday driving Station sold prior to listing HAVING a holiday is supposed to be about relaxing and having fun but it often ends up being a time when everyone rushes around.

This frenetic pace can lead to speeding, impatience, distraction and carelessness behind the wheel.

The Christmas and New Year holiday period is a particularly dangerous time for drivers: between 23 December and 3 January in 2016/17, forty people died in road accidents in Australia – up from 34 the previous year.

There are several simple ways to stay safer on the roads during holiday periods. Here are some of the most important: Road trip tip #1: Make sure your car is ready If you’re planning a big holiday road trip, check your vehicle for tyre tread and air pressure, engine oil, lights, brakes, coolant, battery and overall condition.

Road trip tip #2: Choose the safest route, not the quickest

Keep in mind that the shortest route may not always be the safest – and if there are road works or traffic jams, it won’t be all that quick either!

Holiday periods are notorious for freeway accidents, too, so give yourself enough time to account for unexpected hold-ups on the way due to accidents and/or higher traffic volumes.

JAY FIELDING A SYDNEY investor has bought a Maryborough fuel station just days before it was due to hit the market.

The Ferry St property, tenanted by Metro Petroleum since a major refurbishment in 2018, has been operating as a fuel station for more than 40 years.

It sold for $2.7 million.

The purchaser, acquainted with the tenant, was happy to secure a long-term

passive investment with three per cent annual increases.

The property was sold off-market by Ray White Commercial Queensland Retail Sales father-andson agents Stephen and Elliot Kidd.

Stephen Kidd said it was the fifth service station the pair had sold this year.

“It’s clear that buyers are pumped whenever an opportunity like this comes to market,” he said.

Elliot Kidd said Metro had bought the property, previously a BP, when the former owner-occupier was looking to retire.

Let’s take a look at the report.

THE TEAM from FREEDOM FISHING SUPPLIES WELL I don’t think I need to mention just how hot it’s been - the days are certainly heating up as is the water temperature, and those summer species are really starting to attack

For the adrenalin junkies, casting and retrieving sugar pens and clear poppers on the sand flats throughout the Sandy Strait is having awesome results on monster summer whiting and the occasional flathead.

Mangrove Jack are taking small to medium

diving lures or live baits in Kauri, Butha and Poona creeks.

Tinnanbah ledge is producing Bluey’s, Estuary Cod, Grassy Sweetlip and Blackall.

Swimming your baits in the deeper waters of the Crab or Power islands is producing great results.

So again don’t forget your cast net.

The mighty Mary River is at her best with catches of Threadfin coming in thick and fast – some anglers landing fish over the metre.

Golden Trevally and Queen Fish are taking medium diving lures in the channel between the Bluff at the bottom of Fraser Island and Moon Point.

The preferred bait is live herring, poddy mullet or prawns.

Lots of Spotted Mackerel are schooling up and taking metal slugs on the

surface throughout the waters of Hervey Bay.

Mangrove Jack, Grunter and Threadfin Salmon.

Moon Ledge and Sammie’s have been popular with catches of Blueys, Grassy Sweetlip, Blackall and Cod and plenty of pelagic action in Platypus Bay with some small Black Marlin, Spanish Mackerel, Spotty Mackerel and Golden Trevally taking large, medium to deep diving lures.

The beautiful beach at Woodgate has seen some quality Summer Whiting, Dart and Silver Trevally.

Burrum Heads continues to impress with

Surface lures seem to be doing the trick.

And lastly don’t forget in these windy conditions we have the freshwater option of Lanthall’s Dam which has been putting on a show with the catching and releasing of Bass and Barramundi.

This week's Brag Board First up is Gavin with a fine specimen of a Mangrove Jack, weighing in at 1.65kg. Steve had a great day on the river landing this awesome threadfin.

Carlin was also into the Threadfin, this one weighed in at 5.9kg. Jaymes hit the waters of the Bay, bringing home a nice feed including this Grassy Sweetlip, it weighed in at 2.19kg. Last up is Archer, who out fished his dad , nice flathead mate . Well done

Fraser Coasters showcase skills in exhibition match BRENDAN BOWERS WHEELCHAIR basketball: As part of the Maryborough Basketball Association grand final day the Fraser Coasters Wheelchair basketball players showcased their skills in front of a large crowd at the Maryborough Basketball Stadium.

In a year that has offered few chances for the team to play, it was a perfect way to finish 2020 in front of family and friends on their home court.

For Wheelchair Basketball organiser/ player/coach and ambassador Michael Oxley, the opportunity to play on the grand final day was significant.

“It is huge to be embraced by the Maryborough Basketball Community on their biggest day of the year,” he said.

He thanked the association for showcasing their sport.

“It allows the players to

feel part of the day and play in front of family and friends,” he said.

The inclusive sport allows non-disabled and players with disabilities to come together on the court,” he said.

Oxley has worked hard to grow the sport on the Fraser Coast and believes this match can only help.

“It was a great way to showcase the sport to a different and new group of people,” he said.
