Coast’s oldest citizen and hockey stalwart passes at 106 JAY FIELDING THE Fraser Coast’s oldest citizen, Cecilia Hynes, has been farewelled by family and friends after dying at the age of 106.

As a founding member of Tinana Hockey Club and a volunteer for decades, Cecilia was a familiar face to generations of Maryborough hockey players.

Born Cecilia Mary Groth in Howard on October 10, 1917, she travelled around the north of Queensland for much of her youth.

“We went all over the place when I was younger because my dad was in the railway from Babinda to Mount Isa and Ayr,” Cecilia said last year during her 105th birthday celebrations.

She met Tom, who wooed her while turning sheet music as she played the piano, and the pair married in Ayr when she was 24.

Eight children would

follow, as would an ectopic pregnancy that almost claimed her life during World War II.

“After we moved back to Maryborough, I got into hockey and did that for 50 years,” Cecilia said.

Her efforts were recognised when she was named Fraser Coast Sportsperson of the Year when she was 100 in 2018.

She first played the sport aged 16 in the Isa. Back in Maryborough in 1968, a neighbour wanted his daughter to play hockey.

He knew about the Hynes family of players, so he encouraged them to get together and form a team.

“Tinana’s first team started that year and included my daughters Kathy and Terry and was coached by another of my daughters, Mary,” Cecilia said.

“It was easier to have the whole family play

the same sport.” she said.

Cecilia was registrar and treasurer of the Tinana Hockey Club for more than 40 years and was awarded life membership.

She coached a team for the final time when she was 83.

She lived in the house Tom built for more than 60 years, survived bowel cancer at 94 and would become a resident at Boulton Clarke Baycrest in her later years.

The great-greatgrandmother’s advice for a long life was simple.

“I would say just keep on living and live every day, a day at a time and don’t dwell in what’s gone past, just look to the future.”

The year that was 2023 IT WAS a year full of momentous occasions for Maryborough in 2023 and the coming 12 months are shaping up to bring a fair share of their own.

The start of the year was tragic, with a Brisbane man, 40, dying in a crash on the Bruce Highway at Bauple just a day after the new year began.

Australia Day celebrations included the naming of Maryborough woman Ginger Maryland as the 2023 Fraser Coast Citizen of the Year.

February brought huge news when former premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced that Maryborough train maker Downer was the government’s preferred supplier for its $7.1 billion Train Manufacturing Program.

The murder of Uber driver and radio station worker Scotty Cabrie in Howard later in the month, horrifying locals.

Two teenagers charged with his murder remain before the courts.

February also saw Red Rooster return to Maryborough, next to

7-Eleven which opened the month before, as part of a new development at Station Square Shopping Centre.

Youth crime came under the spotlight in March with the state government introducing new reforms to mixed reaction.

Maryborough became the epicentre for the issue in April after three local women died after the car they were in was hit by a stolen vehicle being driven by a 13-year-old.

That month also brought an announcement that a new seven-bed short-stay unit would be built in Maryborough, reducing the need to transfer patients to Hervey Bay. In May, a memorial to Butchulla men who died defending Butchulla land in conflicts caused by colonisation was unveiled at Queens Park.

Later in the month, the names of 11 locals were added to the city’s Walk of Achievers.

June saw local GP Michael Monsour, top cop Anne Vogler, Maryborough Correctional

Centre GM Kris Winter and volunteer Madonna “Donna” Suter recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours.

June also brought a major local change, with the Queensland Government officially renaming Fraser Island to K’gari, meaning paradise.

In July, FraserPop, which has grown to be one of the region’s most popular events, returned to Maryborough, as did the annual Mary Poppins Festival.

Meanwhile, Churches of Christ announced it would be closing the 10bed Petrie Gardens aged care facility in Tiaro.

The State Government made two big moves locally during July, signing a $4b contract with Downer to build 65 new commuter trains at a factory now under construction in Torbanlea, and releasing its plan to dramatically increase environmental fishing zones in the Great Sandy Marine Park.

In August, councillors voted to continue with plans to build a $109

million office and library in Hervey Bay after an independent report found it was the cheapest option.

September brought the return of the much-loved Wings and Wheels event at Maryborough Airport.

Debate fired up at the end of the month with the unveiling of an application to build a 21-storey hotel and apartment complex in Hervey Bay, more than three times the current building height limit in the region.

It was a building in Maryborough in question in October, with concerns about and public support for a project to refurbish the closed St Stephen’s Private Hospital into lowcost housing.

Queens Park celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Holiday food waste rethink A FOOD waste expert says society needs to rethink its rituals that promote food waste.

Dr Bhavna Middha, Research Fellow, College of Design and Social Context said that “Entertainment, parties and eating out are front and centre as we approach the holiday season.

“We all like to cook, buy and take large amounts of food in this festive season, both as hosts and guests and many people think it is better to have too much food than not enough.

“But our shared practices need to be put under scrutiny, as they can often lead to extravagant food waste.

“Reducing food waste could save the average family between $2,200 to $3,800 AUD per year.

“Here’s where we can start to improve our contribution to food waste: • Stop over-catering: we need to rethink how much food we supply and to accept that the food should be finished or suitably distributed by the end of events.

Local company to manage waste services on K’gari 8

CO-MINGLED recycling will be introduced on K’gari (Fraser Island) and the Eurong Waste Transfer Station will be supervised at set times under a new Fraser Coast Regional Council waste management contract.

At its meeting today, Council resolved to accept

the tender from local company, the Reuse and Recycle Group, to deliver waste management and resource recovery services on K’gari for $1.5 million a year over the next 10 years.

“Council manages waste facilities at Eurong, Happy Valley and Orchid Beach, which are accessible 24 hours a day seven days a week.

The sites are fenced to minimise the spread of rubbish and prevent dingoes from getting in.

“The new contract will include site supervision at the Eurong Waste Transfer Station, allowing for a wider range of waste to be accepted, such as oil, batteries and gas bottles.

This type of waste has been difficult to manage on the island and is often incorrectly disposed of at Council facilities.

“Introducing co-mingled recycling, which essentially means putting material like paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and metal in the same recycling bin, could divert up to 38 per cent of the

waste generated on K’gari that is currently going to landfill.

“Council is committed to reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and managing our activities in a way that reduces our environmental footprint, and that’s what we will achieve with this new waste management contract for K’gari.”

Dog registration inspections to start in early 2024 FRASER Coast dog owners have been encouraged to ensure their dogs are registered ahead of an inspection program starting in early 2024.

Cr Jan Hegge said dogs were required to be registered annually under Queensland Government laws.

“Having a dog can provide a lot of enjoyment and

WIDE Bay HHS claims to have halved the number of patients being treated in the ED for longer than 24 hours.

According to their figures, total long stays have reduced from 1616 for the period July to September 2022 down to 718 in the same period this year.

The NRA-affiliated event is being hosted by Tiaro State School P&C at the Tiaro Recreation Grounds on Inman Street.

Gates open at 2pm with action starting at 3.30pm.

Tickets are $15 for ages 16 and over and $5 for kids aged 5-15.

There will be music and a bar.

Lenthalls Dam tailwater area to be permanently closed

IN AN effort to prioritise community safety, the Fraser Coast Regional Council has announced the permanent closure of the tailwater area below the Lenthalls Dam spillway.

This decision comes as a response to ongoing concerns regarding public safety, as individuals have continued to access the area despite the associated risks.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe emphasized the popularity of Lake Lenthall as a recreational hub for camping, boating, fishing, and kayaking.

The tailwater area, subject to rapid releases of large volumes of water when dam gates operate, has been deemed hazardous.

Despite warning signs installed by the council indicating the no-go zone, some members of the public have continued to ignore safety advice, engaging in activities that risk their lives.

Hello Maryborough!

My name is Phoebe Lee and I am twelve years old. For Kids By Kids tells kids what’s going on in Maryborough from their point of view.

THIS summer, it is getting more sweltering than ever, so you may be looking for ways to cool off. You may pay a visit to the local pool or the Splash Side water play park, or just goof around with the hose in your backyard. Another place that you might be considering is the beach.

The beach is the perfect place where you can splash around, practise your swimming or sink your toes into the sand.

Though it’s not the experience for everybody, this article can give you a few interesting facts, tips and ways to be safe in the sun through the next few months.

Allan lives in North Queensland, where he

loves fishing. He is very experienced at the beach and knows a thing or two that he would like to share.

“With fishing, it is easy to include the family and meet other people. My favourite catches would be a fifty centimetre mangrove jack in an estuary (where a river meets the ocean) and a flathead bream and whiting.” said Allan in an interview.

“If you are just getting into fishing, fish soon after the tide turns to rise or fall.

Bait and Tackle stores often have free tide times and height charts for your area.

“Remember to stay clear of others when casting your line and don’t stay long if you are bored, because you can always catch something another time.”

If you like to swim in the ocean, it’s important to remember that there are people that are trained specially to keep you safe on the beach, that are ready to spring into action

when needed. Pamela was one of the first female lifesavers to join the Ayr Surf Lifesaving Club in North Queensland and would like to share her knowledge.

“The most important part of being a lifesaver is to keep the public safe and maintain our skills to do so. Our motto is vigilance and service.

“I got into lifesaving when Surf Life Saving Australia first allowed women to qualify and serve in 1980.

My family has a history of being involved in Ayr Surf Lifesaving Club. I was one of the first three ladies to receive the bronze medallion in our club.

“Today Australia has many female lifesavers.” said Pam when interviewed.

“My advice if you are going to the beach is to not swim alone, be aware of rips (strong currents) and stay between the red and yellow flags. Speak to a lifesaver for information about conditions. Use sun

protection and vinegar for jellyfish stings. Ways to enjoy yourself at the beach could be by playing cricket, making castles, collecting shells or looking for life in puddles!”

This summer, it is important to have fun and stay safe. In my experience, it is helpful to use Aloe Vera gel when sunburnt and making sure that you are covered.

New life for a New Year

Dasher, Eve and Claus The Maryborough Animal Refuge saved three gorgeous dogs the day before they were due to be euthanised at Bundaberg Pound, a week before Christmas.

Dumped without identity or ages, the Refuge staff gave them Christmas names, as a symbol of the start of their new life.

At the time of writing, Dasher, Eve and Claus are

still in quarantine, but will be available for adoption by the time this paper comes out.

More details will be known about them by then as well.

Claus is only a half-grown puppy. A bull-Arab, possibly crossed with Great Dane, he has enormous feet and will be a big dog.

He has the usual goofy, playful, sweet nature of many of these big dog breeds.

Dasher appears to be an

interesting mix of kelpie with dachshund. He has the body shape and size of a black and tan kelpie, but with short stout dachshund legs. He has a friendly loveable nature.

Eve is a shy mixed-breed girl, with a lot of border collie.

She is timid and nervous in quarantine but will come out of her shell once she is in the main Refuge and learning to trust people.

ZED Another sad face belongs to Zed. He was surrendered because his owners were moving and could not take him. One thing that becomes apparent when you look into Zed’s pen is that he adores playing ball.

As you stand at the gate, he will deftly hit the ball towards you with his head and paw with great accuracy, begging you to throw it back to him.

He longs for someone to take him into the backyard and throw it around for him.

TAILS 8-year-old Tails was surrendered a week before Christmas by his very upset owner.

A casualty of the homelessness crisis, Tails’ owner was living in a car and could no longer keep him. Many tears were shed by his owner during the filling out of the surrender form.

Blue jellies in the Mary LINDSAY TITMARSH WHILE we usually associate jellyfish with painful stings, or even death, there is a friendly species which quite often calls our Mary River home.

The ’Blue Blubber Jellyfish’, is a very common species found in Indo-Pacific and coastal waters.

Although this species is mildly venomous, its sting is not dangerous.

Turtles, crabs, and other marine species feed on these creatures, but the diminishing numbers of these has allowed the jellyfish population to increase.

During droughts, when water in the Mary River is super saline, the Blue Jelly (as we locals refer to them) can often be seen in multi-thousands.

Back when net fishing was still allowed in the river, that practice was sometimes impossible

because of the tons of Blue Jelly overloading nets as well as prawning equipment.

These creatures can swim, however, directional movement is limited, so they just allow themselves to drift with the tidal currents.

This system would work successfully in open oceanic waters, but in the ‘Muddy Mary’, at low tide almost more mud and sand is exposed than there is open water.

Therefore, countless numbers of these creatures become stranded on mud and sand banks on each ebb tide.

Blue Jelly live for six to nine months and can be found in aquariums overseas, as well as on dinner plates.

They are now in abundant numbers in the City Reach of the Mary River, at Maryborough.

Every drought is followed

by rainfall; therefore, the Blue Jelly will get flushed out into the ocean when environmental flows return.

Local resident, Russel Baumgart, remembers back to the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, when Blue Jelly was used for a different purpose.

Crabs that had not long shed their shell, had very little body flesh inside, because it had to be reduced to enable them to climb out of their ‘old clothing’.

Back at that time, when some professional crabbers caught these crustaceans, they did not return them to the water, as is standard practice.

Instead, the crabs were penned up in waterproof cages and fed Blue Jelly, which Russel said fattened them up very quickly.

I had never heard of this practice until recently speaking to Russel – thank you, old fella.
