A RARE Mark 16 Spitfire and Korean War vintage T52 Mustang fighter took pride of place among hundreds of warbirds and classic cars at this year’s Fraser Coast Wings and Wheels in Maryborough on August 1.

With more than 3,500 people attending, Wings and Wheels 2020 was thought to be the first major event held in Queensland since the COVID-19 restrictions were introduced in March.

Hosted by the Maryborough Aero Club, the event had more than 100 aircraft and 200 cars on display.

Event organiser Russell Middleton said two stand-out planes were the Mark 16 Spitfire, a very rare aircraft, and a T52 Mustang, both from Archerfield.

“About 15,000 manhours have gone into rebuilding the Spitfire. It had just finished its test flights before coming up to Maryborough for the weekend, and then it was to go back to England,” Mr Middleton said.

“The Aero Club was able to secure the higher-end aircraft this year because of the COVID-19 situation and support from the Independent Oil Refinery, which donated the fuel.

been able to go anywhere since March and the pilots just wanted to get out. They were a bit worried about the weather but it turned out alright.”

Mr Middleton said the planned Roulette display, unfortunately, had to be cancelled due to the latest COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria.

The Hot Air Balloon display also had to be cancelled at the last minute with their home base at Logan in Brisbane potentially

“Logan isn’t a hot spot yet but it could turn into one. It’s better to be safe than sorry at this stage.”

Mr Stefaniuk said more than 200 cars from 1909 to 2019, and everything in between was on show.

Wings and Wheels vehicle coordinator Slaz Stefaniuk said the Show and Shine car owners were also “very hungry” for a show.

“We had a very old Bush Roadster, an early Triumph motorbike and even a Hummer.

One fellow drove seven hours from Emerald just to show his car.

“Before COVID-19, they used to be able to show every one or two weeks but that was canned.

economic benefits to the region.

“We had people from Brisbane to Emerald, including pilots, come here and stay overnight.

“That all brings money into restaurants and accommodation places, which are all struggling at the moment.”

Mr Middleton said funds raised would support the local State Emergency Service and the Maryborough Military Aviation Museum.

Diversification saved so many local businesses and the lessons that

some learned in April this year are invaluable.

Business owners who had previously resisted technology or change, were forced to accept it to stay afloat.

Likewise, many of our customers also learned that electronic banking and contactless trading were not only possible, but relatively safe and convenient. They're now confident enough in the system that they use it every week.

Let's now use those lessons to expand and stengthen our demographic, grow our businesses wherever we can, and prepare for a time where we may have to go through it all again.

Crisis or windfall?

Sugar sale will change our landscape JAY FIELDING THE FUTURE of the Maryborough Sugar Factory may be under a cloud but the sale of 5000 hectares of its land could also be the dawn of a new industry in Maryborough.

Agricultural fund manager Rural Funds Management will pay $81.1 million for the land holdings, as well as plant equipment and water entitlements.

It plans to convert some of the cane farms to macadamia orchards.

Maryborough has ideal macadamia–growing conditions, and has a long history with the nut, which historically grew on Bauple

Mountain and are still locally referred to as Bauple nuts.

The loss of a third of its cane supply may affect the viability of MSF’s Kent Street mill, with Thai owners Mitr Phol only guaranteeing this year’s cane crush and with grower agreements to crush cane set to expire in 2022.

But RMF chief operating officer Tim Sheridan told the ABC he expected the orchards would be a boost for Maryborough in terms of employment and for local suppliers.

Australia Macadamia Society CEO Jolyon Burnett echoed those sentiments, saying the market trend was away

from sugar and towards crops such as nuts.

Mr Burnett said the transition was being driven by competition from other sugargrowing countries and increasingly healthconscious consumers who were eating less sugar and more nuts.

“Whatever diet you’re talking about – glutenfree, dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan – nuts tick all the boxes,” Mr Burnett said.

And Maryborough could benefit heavily from growing nuts, Mr Burnett said, “if what we’ve seen in Bundaberg is anything to go buy”.

The Bundaberg region is now Australia’s

biggest macadamia production area.

Bundaberg Sugar is currently working with its growers to convert their land to lucrative macadamia orchards as well as buying local and interstate farms.

Mr Burnett said macadamias, Australia’s only native export, were Queensland’s most valuable horticultural export and the most valuable agricultural sector in northern New South Wales.

The flow-on benefits from a new macadamia industry would be manifold, he said.

Initially there would be a lot of work in setting

up the new orchards, including laser levelling, irrigation work and planting as well as setting up seedling nurseries.

The nuts will most likely be dehusked locally, given the high cost of transporting the husks, Mr Burnett said, before being taken to processing plants in Bundaberg and Gympie.

Mr Burnett said he expected a processing plant could be viable in Maryborough if there were 10,000 hectares of orchards.

Once cracked, the nuts could then be returned to Maryborough for value-adding.

Opportunities for local

growers and businesses would include selling the nuts fresh, chocolate coating or using them to make confectionery such as ice cream, baked goods, cereals, protein bars, cosmetics and healthcare products.

“Macadamias are in about seven aisles in the supermarket,” Mr Burnett said.

New orchards would also create demand for agronomists, soil testing, plant and equipment and engineering, he said.

As well as experiencing increasing global demand, macadamias are a high-yield crop, commanding a farmgate price of about $6000 a tonne.

Proposal to rename the Burrum District Community Centre

THE FRASER Coast Regional Council is asking residents if they would like to rename the Burrum District Community Centre in Howard.

At a recent Council meeting, Councillor James Hansen suggested calling for public comment to change the name of the centre to the Mal Chard Community centre to posthumously honour the Howard community volunteer and 2005 Hervey Bay Citizen of the Year.

To gauge feedback, Council has now set up a survey on its Engagement Hub website www.frasercoast.

engagementhub.com. au/renaming-burrumdistrict-communitycentre, in which residents are asked if they agree or disagree with the proposal.

Respondents will also be able to leave feedback with the survey closing at 5pm on Sunday, August 16.

Details of the survey will also be placed at the Howard Library and circulated through networks of Howard based community groups.

He saw the opportunity to build a community centre based in Howard and was committed to making it happen.

Working with the community and key stakeholders, the Burrum Community Centre was built in 2000.

Longer registration period for dog owners FRASER COAST residents will be able to renew their dog registration for 14 months instead of 12 months as a result of a one-off extension aimed at ensuring future renewals are not due at the same time as property rates.

Cr Zane O’Keefe said Council issued annual dog registration renewal notices this week with payments due by the end of the month.

“Having a dog can provide a lot of enjoyment and companionship but also comes with commitments and responsibilities, including ensuring they are registered every year,” he said.

“We’ve been heartened by the fact that the number of dogs registered in the region has increased from about 14,000 to almost 21,000 over the past three years.

“Council encourages local residents to keep doing the right thing by ensuring their dogs are registered, de-sexed and their details are up to date.

“Ensuring your dog is registered and microchipped helps reduce the number of animals that end up at the pound and makes it easier for Council to reunite lost pets with their owners.

Cr O’Keefe said Council had listened to community concerns about dog registrations being due at the same time as rates notices by providing a one-off two month extension to the registration period.

“This means that owners can register their dogs until 31 October 2021 instead of 31 August 2021, with future renewal periods to run from 1 November to 31 October each year,” he said.

“Council has also introduced free first year dog registration from 1 July, while the eligibility criteria for animal registration concessions is now the same as rates concessions.

“Council has moved away from the early payment discount in favour of offering everyone a standard fee for payment.

“The early payment discount was really a penalty for people who could not pay before the due date. The new system is more equitable as everyone pays the same fees for the services with concessions targeted at those most in need.”

The eligibility criteria for animal registrations is no longer based solely on age, with concessions now applying to animal owners who hold a: • Queensland Pensioner Concession Card issued by Centrelink; • Queensland Repatriation Health Card – For All Conditions (Gold Card); or • Veterans Affairs Service Card (Gold Card).

It is compulsory for dogs to be registered with Council from twelve weeks of age and within 14 days of owners moving to the region, while dogs also need to de-sexed before 22 weeks of age.

75th anniversary Local war graves acknowledged of World War II

THIS SATURDAY marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. While current generations have little to no knowledge of that era, incredibly almost 1 million Australians served out of a population at the time of just 7 million.

Over 40,000 Australians died in the service of their Country.

In Maryborough, many of our families have members who fought in the war, and our comprehensive military museum and famous

military trail all tell the tales of those men and women.

If you have some time this week, consider visiting some of these historical sites and spare a thought for what our parents and grandparents sacrificed for our futures.

On Saturday 15 August, Australians are being encouraged to share a photo online with the hashtag #OneInAMillion and to remember the men and women who served their country and helped shape who we are today.

In March 2019 the Dept of Veterans’ Affairs, Office of Australian War Graves established a two year pilot program whereby individuals, non-commercial organisations or community groups might apply for funding to provide a privately placed grave marker for currently unmarked graves of First World War veterans who served in the Australian Forces and died within 20 years of the end of the First World War.

That list was then narrowed down to those who were ex-servicemen and had unmarked graves. Many hours of research was done in trying to trace living family members of these veterans to get permission for the application.

Where a family member could not be found, a letter accompanied the application, describing the efforts made to locate relatives of the veteran. 21 applications were submitted and all were approved.

Year of Indigenous Tourism extended “Extending this statewide promotion will play a vital role in our economic recovery as today’s release of an extensive study of this growing sector shows,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Now, more and more tourists want a cultural experience when they travel and Queensland is perfectly placed to capitalise on that demand.

PREMIER Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced the Year of Indigenous Tourism will extend into 2021 as the Queensland tourism industry continues to recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

“Queensland’s tourism and events industry is enduring an incredibly

difficult year due to the ongoing impacts of COVID-19.

“And it's common sense now to extend the Year of Indigenous Tourism through into 2021, so we can further boost the profile of Indigenous experiences in Queensland as our state recovers from the Covid-19 outbreak.

“Earlier this year, we announced a new $10m Indigenous tourism fund as part of the Year of Indigenous Tourism to help further develop this sector of the industry and create economic opportunities and jobs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders.

“The bulk of this funding has not been spent as specific promotions and programs were forced on hold while we dealt with the Covid-19 outbreak.

“However, we are committed to ensuring we position Queensland as the nation’s leader in

Indigenous tourism.

“And we are well on the way to achieving that.”

Ms Palaszczuk said.

The new report by the government revealed Indigenous tourism supports $505 million in visitor expenditure in Queensland in a normal year and employs nearly 2500 people on a full-time basis.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said the new Indigenous Tourism Sector Analysis report released by Tourism and Events Queensland today shows more than 420,000 visitors take part in an Indigenous tourism activity every year.

Four new exhibitions opening at Gatakers ArtSpace FOUR EXCITING new exhibitions will open at Gatakers Artspace in Maryborough this weekend (Saturday 8 August 2020).

Cr Daniel Sanderson said the variety on offer was truly spectacular and included bronze sculptures, a showcase of the works of an award-winning author and illustrator, and art inspired by the impact of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Bronzed Beauties exhibition has special significance as it features sculptures by nine local artists who completed a workshop at a Maryborough foundry earlier this year,” he said.

“The workshop took students through all stages of the bronze casting process and a display of photographs from the workshop will feature alongside the sculptures.

“The artists involved included Sheena Larsen, Trevor Spohr, Elizabeth Maguire, Bill Sargent, Eva Nieminen, Arno Tesling, Jo Dansie, Valerie McIntosh and Elizabeth Hersey.

“I look forward to seeing the finished pieces that were developed at the workshop by these talented local artists.”

Cr Sanderson said The Art of Story - Discovering The Lost Thing was a fascinating insight into the creation of The Lost Thing by award-winning author and illustrator Shaun Tan.

“The exhibition explores the creation of both the multi-award-winning animation, and Shaun Tan’s acclaimed picture book of the same name,” Cr Sanderson said.

“It features a range of original drawings, paintings and other developmental work created by Shaun for these two projects. “ The story of The Lost Thing is a modern day parable inviting multiple interpretations by people of all ages.

Shaun Tan is the multi award-winning author and illustrator of books including The Arrival, The Red Tree, Tales from Outer Suburbia, Rules of Summer, The Singing Bones, Tales from the Inner City and Cicada.

Cr Sanderson said the Alice exhibition follows Alice’s journey the eyes of two celebrated artists, Catherine Macauley of Brisbane and Jennifer McDuff from Woodgate Beach.

“To date, the Palaszczuk Government has committed to more than $42.5 million worth of measures to support the arts sector through COVID-19, which includes the $22.5 million Arts and Cultural Recovery Package. “stART will fund 213 recipients from all corners of the state for

WELCOME to the Fraser Coast’s latest artistic event, the St Mary’s College Twenty20 exhibition.

Spot a scam when you see one SINCE EARLY March 2020, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has seen an increase in reporting from individuals, businesses and government departments about a range of different COVID-19 themed scams, online frauds and phishing campaigns.

Cybercriminals send phishing messages all the time. But crises like COVID-19 sadly provide more opportunity for cybercriminals to take advantage of vulnerable people wanting additional information by imitating trusted, wellknown organisations or government agencies who might provide answers.

The phishing messages we’ve seen use all sorts of lures to trick people into handing over their personal details. For example, we’ve seen fake reports of new local virus cases and

safety measures to prevent the spread, as well as emails on how to access government benefits or financial assistance payments.

There have also been reports of fake online stores offering to sell non-existent products, including cures or vaccinations for the COVID-19 pandemic and protective items such as face masks.

Phishing messages can be sent via email, SMS, social media, instant messaging platforms or phone calls.

They can look extremely authentic and convincing, replicating legitimate messages from trusted senders.

As well as featuring official-looking logos and disclaimers, phishing emails typically include a 'call to action' to trick recipients into sharing sensitive personal information from passwords to banking details.

Examples of phishing techniques include sending malicious links or attachments to a potential victim and requesting personal information such as name, date of birth, credit card number, or even usernames and passwords.

Identifying these messages as fakes can be very difficult, as cybercriminals go to great lengths to make them appear genuine.

If you think a message you have received is not legitimate, there are techniques you can use to verify the message.

So how do you stay safe?

Scam messages are one of the most common ways cybercriminals try to steal your information online.

Think before you click on a link.

The link itself could contain malicious or nasty software. If you can, hover over the link

to see the actual web address it will take you to.

Never provide your details via a link in a message.

To visit a website (such as your bank) it's safest to manually type the web address into your browser.

Contact person or business to check if they sent message

and share tips on what to look out for, visit the www.cyber.gov.au phishing resource kit page.

There you will find a range of digital resources, including social tiles, GIFs and web banners to share with your staff, customers, family and friends.

You can also use the website to report cybercrime and sign up to free email alerts to stay up-to-date on the latest online threats and how to respond.

THE THIRD stage of the Saltwater Creek Road footpath replacement (Sydney Street to St Helens School) will start today (August 10).

“The work is the final stage of the project to replace the existing footpath with a 2.5m-wide concrete footpath,” Cr Paul Truscott said.

“The $230,000 stage 3 includes upgrades to the Ariadne Street intersection at the entrance to the Saltwater Creek Road landfill and the Maryborough Recycling Centre.

“The project includes pavement widening, kerb and channel, installing pram ramps and a pedestrian refuge which will increase safety of students crossing the busy intersection as they head to and from school.

“A new streetlight will also be installed

adjacent to the pedestrian refuge.

“The work will cause some disruptions to traffic flow in an out of the landfill site so we’re asking drivers to be extra vigilant and patient as they negotiate their way through the project.”

The project was identified as part of Council’s footpath inspection program and is supported by the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants program.

Local company Grand Civil has been awarded the contract to undertake the project which is anticipated to be completed in October, weather permitting.

“Improving the safety of children heading to school or home from school is very important to Council,” Cr Truscott said.

DIY injuries report Warning signs for bad news for men deck disaster

WHILST THERE are a variety of ways people can injure themselves while undertaking DIY projects, a Government report on household injuries looks specifically at injuries that occurred as a result of falls (for example, from ladders and buildings), and while using tools and machinery (for example, hand tools and lawnmowers).

About 3,300 people aged 15 or older were hospitalised in Australia during the report period as a result of a DIY injury due to a fall or contact with tools and machinery—a rate of 13 cases per 100,000 population.

The rate of injury for males aged 15 or older was 22 per 100,000 males, while for females aged 15 or

older, the rate was 5 per 100,000 females.

Similar rates were reported for both categories of DIY injuries included in the report. The rate for DIY fall injuries was 7 cases per 100,000 population aged 15 or older (11 per 100,000 males and 3 per 100,000 females).

For DIY injuries related to tools and machinery, the rate was 6 per 100,000 population aged 15 or older (11 per 100,000 males and 2 per

100,000 females).

The majority of hospitalised DIY injuries due to falls or contact with tools and machinery occurred among males (81%).

DIY injuries were most frequent in the 65–74 age group for both men (597 cases) and women (137 cases).

Very similar numbers of DIY injuries were recorded for the nextyoungest 10-year age group.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) has issued a warning to homeowners not to be complacent about deck health as the Queensland sun has been baking decks across the state.

QBCC Commissioner Brett Bassett said having a decay free deck will reduce the risk of any unwanted disasters.

“Deck safety should always be on your mind before hosting friends and family for the quintessential Queensland barbeque which has become a staple social event,” he said.

ensure their long-term safety.

RTA CEO Jennifer Smith said all parties involved in private rentals should arrange and facilitate adequate inspections, repairs and maintenance to ensure the safety of their rental property.

The QBCC recommends homeowners conduct checks on their decks and balustrades to keep a close eye on potential failings or maintenance issues.

Mr Bassett said that fixings, bracings, posts, bearers and joists were the key areas that needed to be checked.

“We recommend a visual inspection at least every 12 months, however the frequency of any maintenance depends on the materials, type of finish, climate and the degree of exposure to the weather,” he said.

The Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) is also encouraging rental property owners/ managers and tenants

“Property managers/ owners have a responsibility to make sure the rental property is clean, safe, in good repair, fit to live in and abide by health and safety laws – and tenants also play an important role by keeping the property clean, damage-free and notifying the property manager/owner of any repairs required in a timely manner,” Ms Smith said.

Garden event in full bloom

JAY FIELDING MARYBOROUGH Open Gardens will be in full bloom this month, having grown into an event of its own right this year.

Thirteen private gardens will be open to the public for the event on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30.

“Some never-seen-before gardens that will inspire and thrill gardeners will be open for the first time,” event working group member Louise Knol said.

Ms Knol said they included a permaculture farm being developed on an former cow paddock and an animal therapy farm.

Also open for viewing will be the garden at 9 Elizabeth Street in Doon Villa.

Owner Pat Davis has spent the past 36 years perfecting the historic property’s formal gardens.

It contains more than 100 orchids, Pat’s specialty, many attached to a wide variety of palms, as well as garden rooms leading to the terraced riverbank.

The home was built almost 130 years ago for members of Maryborough’s Hart family, whose Wilson Hart sawmill was a short distance away where the Brolga Theatre now stands.

This year for the first time Maryborough Open Gardens is being held over two days as well as separately from the popular Maryborough Open House event.

Town gardens will be open on the Saturday

and country gardens will be open on the Sunday, from 9am to 4pm on both days.

The Lioness Club of Maryborough will be serving light refreshments at 9 Elizabeth Street from 10am to 4pm on the day.

An orchid grower and an artisan potter with handmade products for sale will also be on site.

Entry to all gardens is free and COVID-safe plans will be in place at each location. As a result, there may be wait times at some gardens and visitors will be asked to provide contact details.

Native Bees the big buzz in the garden

AUSTRALIA HAS around 12 species of native bees that live in hives and which do not sting!

Each nest has a queen, drones and thousands of workers. These bees produce sugarbag

honey, a highly prized food of Aborigines who gathered it from wild nests. Each hive produces only small amounts of sugarbag, less than 1 kg per year and so it is a special product, to be savoured and relished.

Stingless bee nests are made of wax and resin and are built in hollow tree trunks, branches, fallen logs and rock crevices.

Unlike honeybees, the cells used to rear

the larvae, the brood comb, are separated from larger ‘pots’ that are used to store the honey and pollen. Some species of stingless bees are very similar.

Often the most reliable way to tell them apart is the structure of the nests, particularly the shape of the brood comb.

The common stingless bee in south-eastern Queensland is Trigona carbonaria. It is black with whitish hairs

on the side of the thorax. The brood comb of this species is a characteristic horizontal spiral.

Trigona carbonaria can be domesticated in artificial hives such as wooden boxes. It is found in coastal areas of eastern Australia from the Atherton Tablelands in Queensland to Bega in New South Wales.

COVID test questions and answers A BIG PART of Queensland’s response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been testing people who may have the virus. Testing is such an important part of our response because it helps people who do have COVID-19 to get treatment when they need it. It means we can isolate them from others to help stop the spread of the virus. We can use contact tracing to get in touch with people they may have already been in contact with and let them know if they need to selfquarantine.

Can I get tested for COVID-19?

In Queensland, anyone who has any COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, should get tested immediately.

Symptoms include a fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, fatigue and loss of smell or taste. It doesn’t matter if you have just one of these symptoms or a group of them, or whether you feel really sick or just a little

unwell – if you’ve got any of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor immediately to get tested. Before your appointment, please call ahead and tell them about your symptoms so they can prepare for your visit.

There are so few cases of COVID-19 in Queensland – does that mean we don’t need to do as many tests?

As restrictions ease across Queensland, the risk of COVID-19 cases happening in the Queensland community increases, so we actually need more people to get tested for COVID-19. Getting tested will help us find as many cases in the community as quickly as possible. This will ensure we are doing everything we can to manage Queensland’s response to the pandemic. So, if you’re sick with any COVID-19 symptoms, you should get tested straight away.

What’s it like to have a COVID-19 test

done?

The standard COVID-19 test involves collecting nasal (inside your nose) and throat swabs, and/ or sputum (mucus coughed up). This means the doctor or nurse doing your test will place a swab on a thin stick in the back of your throat and 2-3cm up into your nose. Or if you’re coughing up mucus, they’ll get you to cough into a collection container. These samples are then sent to a laboratory for testing.

Does the COVID-19 test hurt?

The COVID-19 test shouldn’t be painful, but it can be uncomfortable – there’s a reason you don’t normally put things up your nose!

It’s very quick though, so even if it feels a bit weird, it will only last a couple of seconds. If you find that the testing is really hurting you, you should tell the doctor or nurse performing the test straight away.

It can also help to tell them if you’re feeling a bit nervous beforehand, so they can help you feel more at ease.

Diabetes – do you know the 4 T’s?

EVERY YEAR in Australia, 640 children and adults are admitted to hospital because the early signs of type 1 diabetes are missed.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Clinical Director of Endocrinology Dr Brett Sillars said: “Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. We do not know what triggers this autoimmune process.”

“Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is not linked to modifiable lifestyle factors.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important in helping to manage type 1 diabetes.

Although there is no cure, there has been significant advances in technology to improve our treatment and reduce the burden of the disease on patients.”

Jeremy’s story These advances in technology have made a huge difference for Sunshine Coast local Jeremy Morris.

The 27-year-old was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just nine years old.

“I’d been really sick for a while and lost a lot of weight, I was drinking two litres of water a night and kept wetting the bed, mum knew something was really wrong.”

“I’ll never forget the day I was diagnosed, it was a Thursday night, the Footy Show was on, mum was crying, and I was rushed to hospital.”

“From then on, living with and managing the disease has become a huge part of my life.

It was definitely hard, I did my own needles and finger pricks from a very young age, and everyday is balance of keeping your levels not too high or not too low.”

Recently, Jeremy began using an insulin pump connected to a continuous monitoring system, which is a patch he wears on his skin.

Jeremy is the first local patient to use the latest version of continuous glucose monitoring technology and has had some very positive results.

“It’s ground-breaking, amazing technology.

The patch I wear has a sensor wire that sits just under your skin

and constantly monitors your glucose levels. If they go too low or too high, an alarm on my phone goes off, alerting me to it,” Jeremy said.

“My wife can also follow my levels on her phone, and my mum does as well, it’s peace of mind for them too.”

If not diagnosed in time, type 1 diabetes can be fatal. A diagnosis tool, called the 4 T’s has been developed to help people recognise the early warning signs of type 1 diabetes.

The 4 T’s are: • Tired – unexplained or excessive fatigue • Thirsty – a thirst that can’t be quenched • Thinner – sudden or unexplained weight loss • Toilet – going to the toilet a lot “It’s so important that if you feel like something is not right, you should go and get checked.

The only thing that is going to help you manage diabetes is the correct medication and education,” Jeremy said.

THE FISHING in this area is second to none with such diverse range of species and wide range of fishing techniques on offer it is no wonder our local anglers have a smile from ear to ear.

With the potential to catch anything from a whiting or bass to a monster GT or marlin it’s our job to give you all the hints, tips and info to catch your dream fish – no matter what it might be.

Starting out with the bread and butter species such as whiting, bream and flathead, the sand and mud flats are a top spot for land based walking fisho’s and a great spot to pull up in the boat and get out to flick the shallows and drains.

Best results for the summer whiting are in the shin-deep waters around the mangroves with the flathead varying from cruising around in the deep channels or sitting right up high on the tide line.

Depending on your style, a number of lure or bait displays will work in those areas.

Try worms both beach and biodegradable prawns or my top choice is the yabbies.

Some recent hot spots have been Tuan Channel and creek for summer whiting and around River Heads near the deep hole off oyster’s rocks for the flathead.

The Great Sandy Strait continues to surprise with some trophy cod catches coming in from off the ledges and drop

off best using a live or whole bait to tempt the big guys.

A heavy main line, a strong leader, a 7/0 plus bait hook and hold on for the fight of your life.

Best areas this week to try would be Fig Tree, Kinbackers and

Tinnanbar ledges plus Deep Creek.

The boats have been stretching far and wide across the waters chasing the reefies – The Southern and Northern Gutters are swarming with trout, snapper, cobia, blackall and reds.

has experienced many up's and down's, as membership dwindled after severe floods destroyed much of the club's infrastructure.

Done has had the difficult job of ensuring the rowing club meets the ever-changing COVID-19 safety restrictions.

With facilities now repaired, new life has been breathed into the club thanks to a collaboration with Maryborough State High School.

"We've got stringent processes in place to make sure that the sport can continue during a pandemic.

Many of the school's students have joinĂŠd the rowing club's ranks.

Simon Done, the club's safety officer, is excited to see the new grant used to make improvements to the clubhouse. The club plan to use the money to accommodate the club's ever-growing selection of boats and hopefully add a floor to facilitate the education and development of current and future rowers.

"We have implemented all manner of preventative measures to protect rowers, such as wearing masks and frequent sanitation of rowing surfaces," he said.

Club President Lee Field was ecstatic with how many students had decided to join, and their dedication to their craft.

Field said that "[over the COVID-19 isolation] everyone was worried the club would lose

momentum." The club took steps to ensure that everyone stayed in form over the temporary break, with members taking home rowing machines to allow them to practice, without breaking regulations."

Since early last year, the Maryborough State High School rowers have managed to obtain many podium level finishes, competing at Brisbane and Bundaberg, against private clubs and schools, securing 2nd place medals.

The club brings together students, teachers and community members to ensure their teams continue to reinforce their golden example.

Bears send shock through Power BRENDAN BOWERS AFL: The Maryborough Bears have awoken from their hibernation and are becoming a real threat in the AFL Wide Bay reserves competition.

The club has struggled over the past few seasons with recent form suggesting that is changing quickly.

After recording their first win in over a year only two weeks ago, the Bears almost got away with another win

against Bay Power on Saturday.

The Maryborough led for three-quarters of the match before being run down by Bay Power, losing 5.6-36 to 5.4-34.

Under the guidance of club president Steve Marsh continues to develop as a team. The Bears are rebuilding, and the club has recruited players from around the region to the team including AFL Queensland Development Coordinator Kieron Hyndman and players

from Gympie and South Burnett to assist first time players.

"We are slowly coming together as a group," Marsh said.

In wet and muddy conditions, the Bears shocked the Power with their tenacity and willingness to contest for the ball and went into the first break leading .22-14 to 1.0-6.

The Bears continued their pressure in the second quarter to extend their lead to

eleven points at halftime.

Bay Power appeared to have no answers to combat the surging Bears.

The third quarter was even with both teams scoring goals while the Bears extended their lead slightly.

The Bears were in the box seat as the final quarter started with their eyes firmly planted on the victory.

Bay Power had other ideas and sprung to

life scoring nineteen unanswered points to defeat the Bears narrowly.

Jackson Gouge and Michael Epstein were the top goal scorers for the Bears kicking two goals each.

Steve Marsh, while disappointed with the result remained positive.

"We can't fall asleep in the last quarter and expect to win.

We have come a long

way in a short time, and we had 30 players to chose from on Thursday night, which shows we are heading in the right direction," he said.

The team play at home next weekend for the first time this season and Marsh is urging everyone to come out and support the team.

"Come on Bears fans come on out and support your local team at home," he said.

First bounce is at 11.45 am at Port City Park Maryborough.
