Council’s economic stimulus package launched

A BUSINESS expo and grants to do up shopfronts are among the initiatives to be rolled out under a $500,000 Fraser Coast Regional Council COVID-19 Economic Stimulus package.

The economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic had been felt worldwide, and the Fraser Coast certainly hadn’t been immune, Cr Paul Truscott said.

“We know that at the height of the pandemic almost three quarters of businesses had reported some reduction in turnover or cash flow, but we also know that our local businesses have demonstrated resilience and have been responding to the challenges thrown their way,” he said.

“Council is determined to do what we can to assist businesses to grow our local economy, keep people employed and create new jobs.

“We have developed a wide range of programs designed to help businesses improve shopfronts, increase sales, reduce costs and share knowledge.

“It’s also about generating ideas

and stimulating new ways of thinking.”

The suite of projects in Council’s COVID Economic Stimulus program include: •Business Shopfront Grants, $200,000; •Business Advice Grants, $100,000; •Business Face-to-Face Survey, $50,000; •Business Summit Luncheon, $50,000; •Business Expo, $50,000, and; •Event Showcase, $50,000.

The package would help the region recover and keep money locally, Maryborough Chamber of Commerce President Michelle Clunn said.

The stimulus package adds to the work already undertaken by Council’s Economic Development Team to stimulate the economy in response to the COVID-19 slowdown,” Cr Truscott said.

“Creating a place, an atmosphere, where people want to visit is vital if we want shoppers and visitors to come to the region.

“Council extended regulated business licences and permits for six months for free, provided rent relief for commercial tenants, introduced the Buy Local Fraser Coast Gift Card initiative and worked with the Queensland Government to secure direct Jetstar flights to and from Sydney.”

The COVID-19 Economic Stimulus package has been welcomed by the business community.

“The shopfront grants in particular, will help businesses and local tradies,” she said.

“Building owners and tenants who have been struggling during the downturn will be able to access grants of up to $5,000 to improve their shopfronts.

“The grants are open for commercial and industrial premises; it’s not just heritage buildings or confined to one area.

They are for almost any business across the Fraser Coast.

“The grants will also support local tradies who will be contracted to undertake the work.

Cr Sanderson said Council had set aside $1m in its 2020/21 budget for initiatives to help the Fraser Coast community through

the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Council previously allocated $300,000 to establish a COVID-19 Support Team within the Regulatory Services department to focus on education and awareness for Council staff, businesses, sporting groups, community groups and event hosts,” he said.

“We have now allocated $500,000 for the COVID-19 Economic Stimulus Package with $200,000 remaining for any emerging issues, including relating to the vaccine roll-out.”

Mary Ann name plate reunion It was unveiled at a ceremony on March 28.

A PIECE of Maryborough’s past has been linked with its present.

In attendance were James Sim and Barry Sim, William Sim’s great-grandson and great-great-grandson, and David Pettigrew, William Pettigrew’s great-great-grandson.

The nameplate of the Mary Ann, the first locomotive built in Queensland, has been mounted on the train’s modern-day replica.

It is the only known surviving part of the original Mary Ann, which was built in 1873

by John Walker and Co and destroyed in a fire 20 years later.

The train, which featured an unusual vertical boiler, hauled timber at Cooloola to supply the Dundathu sawmill owned

by William Sim and William Pettigrew.

Also in attendance was Maryborough woman Marilyn Jenson, whose brother Merv Volkers donated the nameplate to the Maryborough City Whistle Stop just before Christmas.

The nameplate had been in the collection of rail memorabilia owned

by Mr Volkers, a rail enthusiast from Ipswich.

Both men had daughters named Mary Ann.

Whistle Stop president Warren McPherson said investigations had since proved the nameplate was the original.

The nameplate now adorns the rear of the replica Mary Ann so it can be seen in all its glory by passengers who enjoy a ride on Thursdays and the last Sunday of the month as it shuttles between Queens Park and the Mary River Parklands.

Recycling plant not condoned by officials

AN ASX-LISTED company registered in Maryborough has signed a monumental deal to supply its innovative pelvic floor rehabilitation device in China.

Now Analytica wants governments in Australia to get on board and implement programs using the Pericoach here.

It says adoption of the technology could save taxpayers tens of billions of dollars in reduced aged care and therapy costs, as well as changing the lives of the one in three women suffering stress urinary incontinence.

Analytica has spent 12 years and $25 million developing the Pericoach.

The device is inserted into the vagina and used in conjunction with an app on a smartphone.

The app cues the user to squeeze and relax against the PeriCoach.

The contractions of the muscles are detected, displaying activity on the app and the user portal shows progress overtime, allowing users to see and document results which may be shared with clinicians.

Analytica’s aim was to replicate what highly trained, specialised pelvic floor physiotherapists can do.

Such specialists are difficult to access, being limited in number and expensive.

A clinical trial in Australia and a University of New Mexico study have proven the Pericoach can do that safely, at a fraction of the cost and in the privacy of a woman’s home.

Dr Monsour said the top two reasons people enter aged care were dementia, for which there is no cure, and incontinence, which the Pericoach can prevent.

Analytica estimates use of the device could save the Queensland Government $91 million a year in surgical costs, as well as freeing up theatres and beds.

The company already has arrangements to export the device to eight Middle Eastern countries.

Analytica chairman Michael Monsour, a Maryborough GP, said if the technology was adopted in Australia, the company would build a manufacturing facility in Maryborough, creating more than 200 highly paid jobs.

Analytica hopes Australian governments adopt the technology for use in women after childbirth, and between the ages of 50 and 70 to prevent the need to enter aged care.

About 92 per cent of aged care residents in Australia suffer urinary incontinence, with 81 per cent of those cases reversible.

Commission into aged care found that more than half the time residents spent receiving care related to toileting.

The cost of stress urinary incontinence in Australia is estimated at $24 billion a year, which includes lost productivity and the cost of incontinence pads.

The Pericoach costs just $300, while most people with incontinence spend $600 to $900 a year on pads.

The deal with China is a joint venture with two companies which involve a network of more than 30,000 clinicians in more than 100 cities and more than 600 hospitals.

A program will be rolled out to use the Pericoach with women after childbirth.

Analytica now has its eye on expansion into Indonesia, South-East Asia, Europe and North America.

THE Department of Environment and Science says a Maryborough man who has built a plastic recycling plant must have official authorisation.

DES officers attended Cliff Thomas’s premises twice, most recently on March 17.

Mr Thomas’s pyrolysis plant turns plastic into biogas, oil and carbon solids.

However, he says the operation, which he had hoped to use to attract funding to build a larger commercial plant, is now effectively shut down due to the costs involved.

A DES spokesperson said thermal processing of waste could be a dangerous activity, with potentially adverse impacts for human life and the environment.

“Thermal processing of plastic waste in a pyrolysis installation is an Environmentally Relevant Activity (ERA) under the Environmental Protection Regulation 2019,” the spokesperson said.

Every day Facebook is full of hooning stories.

crimes as they’re being committed, not have someone (if you’re really lucky) call you three weeks later to ask if you got a photo of the criminals (yes that’s happened).

The Sun reported (Maryborough Sun, Feb 25 2021) that we apparently have sufficient police officers and equipment to deal with our community needs, so why don’t we ever see them?

I believe that between Hervey Bay and Maryborough there are around 80 police staff and there would have to be two dozen vehicles...it’s about time we saw them performing their duties and deterring criminals BEFORE crimes were committed.

Geoff Dymock - Maryborough’s favorite sporting son RICK WHITTLE MARYBOROUGH is acknowledged as a great sporting city, producing talented sportspeople who have represented at national and international level.

In the sport of cricket, no local sportsperson has risen to the heights of Geoff Dymock.

Born in 1945, Geoff attended Maryborough Central State School and then Maryborough Boys High School (this year celebrating their 60th reunion anniversary since Geoff’s last year in year 12) before graduating to teachers College.

Although talented in lots of different sports such as rugby and tennis, cricket was the sport to captivate a young Geoff.

“Maryborough has and had a great sporting culture, in cricket we were exposed to talented players from other regions such as Gympie, Bundaberg and Burnett “ Geoff said “Like most kids I was constantly playing sport, either at school, weekend competitions or on the streets at home” Even though he left Maryborough to study teaching in Brisbane, he still travelled back to Maryborough to represent the region on weekends.

This led to his inclusion in the Country Colts and Queensland Country teams. Geoff’s work as teacher took him to Granville State School and Cherbourg School.

While teaching in Cherbourg he met the love of his life, Merl who

50 years later is still his greatest supporter.

Endeavoring to gain more experience in sport, Geoff had to forgo his teaching career to travel to England to play in the Central Lancashire League.

“It was a great adventure for a country lad from Maryborough, it taught me the nuances of cricket” Geoff said.

“Merl who had never been outside the local region, had her first trip on a plane and joined me in England” Upon his return to Australia, Geoff soon became a stalwart of Queensland State Cricket “I was fortunate, just prior to my inclusion, the Queensland State hadn’t been performing too well.

The State selectors picked four new comers to the team, fortunately I was one of them” Geoff said This was the start of a distinguished 10-year career that culminated in the captaincy, although not winning the Sheffield Shield during Geoff’s era, he saw the emergence of Queensland coming to power through the recruitment of players of the caliber of Greg Chappell, Jeff Thomson and Allan Border.

Probably his greatest sporting moment while representing Queensland was his final game.

“We were playing NSW in Sydney, they had a team with nine Australian test players, we only had me who had played test cricket” reminisces Geoff “I remember saying before the game, the only way, we could win was if we won the toss and I took five wickets. I ended up losing

the toss taking five wickets and running the last batsman out, and we just got beaten” Geoff Dymock test career started with the 1973 tour of New Zealand. Overall, he represented his country at test level 21 times, capturing 78 wickets.

He toured New Zealand, West Indies and England.

Undoubtedly his greatest test achievement came in 1979 series against India.

He became the third bowler to dismiss all 11 opposition players in a Test: very rarely has a bowler with a 12-wicket haul ended in a losing side.

He bowled his heart out in the Kanpur Test against India and shone in the most hostile conditions.

“In the first innings I took five for 99, and seven for 67 in the second.” Geoff said “These were the days before International test umpires. I remember hearing a story about an Indian umpire who gave a local batsman out, when he got home that night, his house was burnt down” Geoff’s career coincided with the greatest revolution in cricket, World

Series Cricket better know as the Packer revolution. “ Although we were playing before packed houses, cricketers were receiving a pittance in remuneration, in fact it was costing us to represent Australia in Test cricket.”Geoff remembers “Back in those days, you had to sign for your money after every test, a few lines down from where I signed I saw the gate keepers signature, and believe it or not, he was getting more money than the players.”

When reflecting on a career that included bowling to some of the best batsmen the world has seen Geoff nominates Indian Sunil Gavaskar, West Indian duo Gordon Greenidge and Vivian Richards as the best he bowled to.

Upon his retirement Geoff was awarded a Medal for the Order of Australia in 1983.

He stills coaches cricket with the same commitment and talent he displayed during his illustrious cricket career.

Geoff Dymock, not only a fine cricketer but a great ambassador for Maryborough.

Forum focuses on Wide Bay THE first Regional Community Forums for 2021 have been held across regional Queensland.

Minister Bailey said that one year on from a peak in daily COVID-19 cases, regional Queensland was in an enviable position to lead the State’s economic recovery.

“Today, beside the golden beaches of Hervey Bay, the fifth Regional Community Forum for the Wide Bay Burnett-Fraser Coast region explored affordability, accessibility and the initiatives supporting new jobs and infrastructure,” Ms Linard said.

The forum heard further updates about memberled projects, initiatives supporting mental health and wellbeing, regional tourism and history, vocational education and training, and information sharing.

Earlier in the day, forum members visited Nikenbah Sewage Treatment Plant and Hebblewhite Hardwood Plantation, learning about the water cycle and how recycled water is made safe for use for beneficial applications such as irrigation.

Mr Saunders thanked forum members for their commitment and care through COVID-19.

“Over the past year, forum members joined forces with the Queensland Government Regional Managers Coordination Network to better understand the mental health impacts of the pandemic,” Mr Saunders said.

“By providing input to the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, to help in the development of the region’s recovery plan, they have made a profound contribution to future health and wellbeing in the region.”

Common traffic myths busted

Maryborough Police have provided these clarifications on our “favourite” traffic myths.

If you are travelling at 80 km/h in a 100 km/h zone you must pull over (when it is safe to do so) and allow cars to pass.

So when should you pull over?

Generally common sense prevails…if you see four or five cars behind you that is the time to consider pulling over to allow cars to pass safely.

If you drive on Queensland roads, your vehicle should display official number plates and if the vehicle has been

issued two number plates, both plates should be attached to the vehicle.

More CCTV flagged Lower energy costs for community groups WIDE Bay community groups can now apply for grants up to $12,000 as part of a new Coalition Government program to lower energy costs, support local jobs and help reduce global emissions.

NEW CCTV could be installed at Maryborough City Hall, a Torquay retail precinct and the Torquay Road skate park in Pialba.

“There is also a lot of evidence that the presence of the cameras leads to a decrease in antisocial behaviours.

At its March meeting, Fraser Coast Regional Council agreed to consider installing internal and external cameras at the Maryborough City Hall, extending the coverage of cameras at the Bideford Street retail precinct and installing cameras at the skate park in Torquay Road.

“The feedback we have received is that it also makes the community feel safer.”

“The CCTV network has been very helpful for police to track down offenders,” Cr Zane O’Keefe said.

“Of the remaining requests, 16 were estimated to cost $397,000 and will be considered in future budget deliberations,” Cr O’Keefe said.

“Most recently footage was used to identify people who destroyed video screens and vandalised the Duncan Chapman statue in Queens Park in Maryborough.

The three new projects, which will be considered as part of the 2021/22 budget deliberations, would cost $118,000 and were among 28 requests for CCTV cameras received by Council.

Council’s CCTV network is valued at almost $2 million and includes 504 cameras at locations throughout the Fraser Coast.

Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Llew O’Brien announced expressions of interest are now open for the Powering Communities Program, which will fund up to 12 projects worth a total of $67,700 in Wide Bay. Grants of between $5,000 and $12,000 will be available to eligible community organisations, with no co-contribution required.

“Energy bills are often one of the biggest overheads for not-for-profit organisations and these grants will help reduce that cost by assisting with measures such as installing solar panels or a battery, upgrading air conditioners, replacing a hot water system or refrigerator with more efficient models, replacing lighting with LEDs or conducting an energy audit,” Mr O’Brien said.

“These grants will ease the financial pressure for local organisations, such

as community halls, sports clubs, senior citizens clubs and charities, by helping to reduce power bills so they can better focus on meeting the needs of Wide Bay communities.”

The formal application stage for nominated EOIs will open on 1 July and close on 20 September 2021.

Council’s Level Two water restrictions now in effect

The future is digital for regional businesses with improved internet THE Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Bruce Billson says small businesses in regional and remote areas of Australia now have more reasons to digitise, with NBN Co announcing expanded coverage and lower wholesale prices.

FRASER Coast residents will only be permitted to use sprinklers and irrigation systems three nights a week between 6pm and 8am under level two water restrictions that take effect today.

The new restrictions will also mean residents will only be able to water gardens and fill swimming pools between 6pm and 8am each day.

“It might be mulching your garden, using a swimming pool cover or checking regularly for water leaks – every little bit helps and every drop counts,” he said.

“Equally, it’s an incentive to small businesses to improve their online presence, particularly at a time when more consumers are shopping online.

“By being water-wise, you not only save water, you also save money on your water bill.”

“The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows online sales rose by more than 70% in December compared to the same period a year ago.

Dozer’s owner never came back to get him However, he has previously lived with a dog.

He has not been tested with cats.

Dozer is desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and registered.

DOZER, a 7 year old Red Male American Staffy X, was booked into the Maryborough Animal Refuge Dog Boarding Kennels at the end of December 2020 for a 12day stay.

After 54 days it was clear that no-one was coming back to get him.

Dozer was moved out of the Boarding Kennels and into the Refuge facility for rehoming. He was initially unsettled and appeared depressed.

But over the past few weeks, he has become more confident and has bonded

Mia wants out Mia is the longest-staying guest at the Maryborough Animal Refuge, having been there over 6 months.

He would enjoy a family that will take the time to play with him in the backyard. He has been around kids and walks well on the lead.

Mary and Susan – Sister Rivers of the Fraser Coast THE lifestyle of some of the many species of small crabs that call the MarySusan Estuary home, are quite often vastly different.

The creek and riverbank dwellers have the pleasure of being refreshed by tidal water every day.

Those crabs that choose to dig their burrows adjacent to these areas, may not receive tidal water for a few days if tides are small.

What about those crabs that live on the vast tidal flats that only become inundated during large spring tides?

Then there is Haswell’s Shore Crab, which calls home, a burrow situated still further out from the water’s edge beside the grassland of mainland cow paddocks.

Some of these places can go for many weeks without seeing tidal water.

While the crabs that live on the forever wet, regular tide areas can feed on algae almost every day, their landward cousins may have only a few days each month to get out on to wet mud to feed.

If this period coincides with dry weather, then the large upper-level tidal flats can remain dry for some time.

Then, the crabs simply ‘sit it out’ while waiting for that precious commodity.

Some burrows are up to a metre deep, allowing moisture to be retained to keep the crustaceans hydrated.

At times on suitable upperlevel tidal flats, Signalling Fiddler Crabs number in the many thousands.

The males have one massive claw and one small one.

As well as for defence, they use the large one to attract females by waving it in the air.

As they feed on algae, territorial disputes among the multitude of orange and white bodies are common.

The males of this species keep themselves well groomed, being very conscious of their appearance.

This opinion was formed

after watching them strenuously polishing their large claw with the small one. They can manoeuvre the large one right across in front of the little one so as to not miss any part of the front surface. Maybe this is where the fiddler name came from.

At Tandora, a pair of Ospreys have a nest situated adjacent to a large tidal saltpan, which, at times is home to many thousands of Fiddlers.

Occasionally one of the birds can be seen skimming at ground level over the mudflats, and with extreme dexterity while flying, snatching a crab off the mud. Imagine being the one unlucky crab out of many thousands.

Most years, great numbers of Signalling Fiddler Crabs can be seen making a living from the vast tidal flats of the estuary.

At other times like during the disastrously waterlogged recordbreaking wet seasons of 2011 and 2012, not a crab was to be seen.

During that time, excessive freshwater lying for months on tidal flats ruined their feeding



The extremely wet years of 2011 – 12, were a nightmare for many plants, animals and trees on coastal Tandora.

River dwelling creatures suffered greatly from 20 months of constantly waterlogged flats, and freshwater (usually salty) streams.

Banksia trees were almost wiped out in the Tandora bushland.

Do not let anyone convince you readers that ‘wet as possible is best’.

We left-handed people have always had to cope with a multitude of tools, instruments and gadgets made by right-handers for right-handed people.

Humans are not the only species to have lefthanders (molly-dookers) in the minority. A great many more Signalling Fiddler Crabs have their large claw positioned on the right side, rather than the left.

Seasonal Care Information for bonsai

Give a high phosphate fertilizer, such as a 10-60-10 blend, to your post-bloom flowering trees to build up reserves and rudimentary buds for next spring.

Winter: In the event of a hard freeze in your area, frosttender bonsai such as bougainvillea, elephant’s food, the various Ficus, lantana, natal plum, and so forth need extra protection. If you can, before sunset move the trees close to the house and under a porch or the edge of the roof so that vertical air drafts will not directly reach them. Elevate the pots on concrete blocks or a table or bench and put a section of newspaper directly under each pot to provide a layer of insulation. If winds or breezes are likely, drape a newspaper page over each pot, anchoring it under the corners of the pot. Do not use plastic sheeting.

An unheated but protected room, garage, or storage closet can also be used.

Again, place an insulative layer of newspaper below the pots.

If you notice or suspect frost damage to your bonsai, it is best to wait until the appearance of new growth before trimming any branches.

DO NOT fertilise in the winter. Wait until the appearance of swelling leaf buds before feeding any tree.

Spring: This is the time of year for regrowth, renewal, repotting, and restyling.

Faster-growing young trees or plants which have been in the same container for two or more years may need to be repotted. Before this is done, consider if a different size, style or color container will better enhance the appearance of the bonsai. Perhaps just a slight repositioning in the existing pot is all that is necessary.

Ideally, pot / re-pot just as the new leaf buds are reaching their maximum size before they start to open. This ensures that there are sufficient internal reserves in the plant to keep it going during the one to two weeks before new feeder

roots have developed enough to continue absorbing nutrients for the plant.

Try to work in the shade, out of the wind, on a day when the dew point is at least 30 degrees F. Keep a spray bottle near to moisten the root ball as needed.

Use sharp scissors when cutting roots and make clean cuts. The younger and more vigorous your tree is, the more frequently you might prune roots. Remove the tap and other large roots with concave cutters. Be sure not to try to cut rocks or anything other than roots! The top growth of your tree is, to an extent, a reflection of the bottom growth, and vice versa. By keeping the roots fibrous and well balanced, the top growth will follow suit.

Fertilizer primary components of Nitrogen Phosphorus - Potassium (K) are necessary, respectively, for Leaves & Stems - Roots & Flowers - Overall Health and Hardiness. At least fifteen other elements in smaller quantities are also vital for the life of plants. Organic fertilizer is not necessarily “better,” but it can provide helpful small amounts of more complex substances which the inorganic commercial blends don’t include. It is wise to alternate between the two types.

In the repotting mixture you may want to include about a quarter-labelstrength application of slow release solid fertilizer with micronutrients.

This could be either as Osmocote® granules or Gro-Power® planting tablets.

Have the roots not grown very much since the last time you potted?

Consider your choices: use a coarser soil mix this time; make sure your pot drains better; decrease the nitrogen and/or increase the phosphate content of

the fertilizer for this tree; do not disturb the roots for a few years.

After a few weeks, begin adding some balanced organic fertilizer. Junipers and pines will benefit from weekly foliar feedings of fish emulsion. Finally, cut off any flowers just as they finish blooming to ensure the next year’s good showing.

Unless you specifically want to bulk up a trunk or branch, do not let the new side buds and branches grow too long. Cut back and limit the active buds to only a pair or two per branchlet. The goal is to have compact, ramifying growth.

Summer: Keeping in mind the variations due to each tree’s size, variety, age, health, and microclimate positioning, the following are tips to help your bonsai survive during a long, hard summer.

•Grow native or naturalized plants.

•Use the recommended coarse soil mix.

•Keep your plants healthy and pest-free. Rotate each plant a quarter turn every week.

•Don’t let your plants get out of control, especially the faster growers like junipers and elms.

•Keep new growth pinched after it gets only so long. Don’t lose the shape you’ve spent time working on.

•Be aware of the waterretention of each pot of soil mix.

•Provide shade cloth overhead, especially after noon. Or site your bonsai under landscape trees or shrubs.

•Set pots on low stands or slatted workbenches over a lawn, mulch or gravel; less preferable is over concrete or desert landscaping. Soak the ground thoroughly in the morning.

•Over-pot your trees in the springtime. The extra room will be much appreciated.

•Set pots near a swimming pool or pond, or above but not in pans of water. Be aware of reflected sunlight. (Keep trees a little way away from south or west facing masonry walls or windows.)

•Group plants together, but not touching one another. Allow room for

good air circulation.

•Don’t let your more delicate trees get unfiltered west/afternoon sun or a monsoon dust storm.

•Water maples and other plants bearing thin-edged leaves with distilled or reverse-osmosis (RO) water. Remember to fertilize half-strength

regularly.

•If a bonsai has wilted leaves, put it in the shade and give it a little water.

•In the late summer and throughout the fall use a high phosphate fertilizer, such as a 10-60-10 blend, for the flowering trees.

This allows the plant to build up reserves and rudimentary buds.

Commercial vehicles in short supply CRAIG WINTER

COVID is continuing to disrupt manufacturing and logistics around the world, including many of the components required to manufacture vehicles at almost every level.

Whilst demand has exploded since July last year, supply has slowed, with new commercial stocks on most brands running in short supply.

Base model configurations are most effected, and even trays, bullbars and other accessories either hard to find or taking much longer to reach dealers.

Thomas Middis of Wide Bay Motor Group says that businesses in particular need to secure vehicles quickly if they want to take advantage of tax incentives before the end of the financial year.

“Moving into EOFY, commercial stock IS running out. With a lot of the vehicles coming into the country having deposits against them already, if businesses don’t act soon they may miss the opportunity to write off a vehicle in this

financial year.

“The shortage is far from a local problem as these vehicles are running out Australia wide.” he said.

A few canny dealers have stockpiled commercial orders which are now starting to come into the lots.

“Wide Bay Motor Group are lucky as we have secured a massive amount of Mazda BT-50 stock coming through to compensate, but even this won’t last forever.” said Thomas.

Dealers who don’t have these orders in place are reporting that their stock levels are down 30-40% on what’s required to fulfill customer demand.

However it’s not all COVID’s fault.

Easter means beach, fishing and family Nothing beats time on the water or on the beach fishing with the fambam.

Let’s have a look and what’s being caught.

Well known spots on the outskirts of the Strait have been the go, Beaver Rock to River Heads is still the place to be to land a Barramundi, Threadfin Salmon, Grunter or Cod

& in the shallower water your bread-and-butter fish are being caught in good numbers as well.

Hervey Bay waters are still producing good catches of our pelagic species like Tuna, GT’s and a huge variety of Mackies.

Fishing throughout the Great Sandy Strait has been on fire with anglers targeting flathead on hard body and soft plastic lures on the sand flats on the making tide.

Winter whiting are on the bite between Poona and Tinnanbar on the drift in the deep water.

Large Estuary Cod, Grassy

Sweetlip and Blackall have been landed in the deep hole out the front of Kauri Creek.

Both mac grounds inside and outside the Wide Bay are loaded with fish including Spanish, Greys, Spotties and Schoolies.

Threadfin Salmon and Barra are working the top

of the ledge at Fig Tree on the making tide.

Flicking soft plastic lures has been the preferred weapon of choice when targeting both species at this location.

The mud crabs are still around with most catching a nice feed. Definitely worth soaking a pot or two.

Fraser Coast Sports Awards celebrate local achievements A TEENAGE triathlete selected to represent Queensland and a young cyclist who has rapidly improved her racing results have taken out the male and female Sports Person of the Year categories at the Fraser Coast Sports Awards.

More than 150 people gathered at the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough last week to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of the Fraser Coast’s sporting community their volunteers, players, officials, and coaches.

Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said it was fantastic to see the Fraser Coast sporting community come together after a tough year.

“Sport is just so important in our society. It helps build healthier, happier and safer communities,” he said.

Cr Everard said it wasn’t just the athletes who had displayed incredible commitment and resilience during the pandemic.

“It is only through the dedication of volunteers who take up key executive positions that clubs can continue to operate,”

he said.

Junior Sports Person of the Year (under 14) Cruz Baker Cruz has been an integral part of many representative cricket teams and has scored 1000+ season runs in the last three consecutive seasons.

On the back of these achievements, Cruz was approached by a New Zealand bat making company “Laver & Wood” to become a brand Ambassador and was recently made the face of the company’s youth bat collection.

Team of the Year Fraser Coasters Wheelchair Basketball Club Inc Representative wheelchair basketball team Fraser Coasters wasted no time proving they are a force to be reckoned with entering their first competition in January 2019 shortly after they formed.

The team entered the Suncoast Spinners Carnival in Caloundra, the largest wheelchair basketball tournament in Australia, attracting international, interstate and Queensland teams.

The Fraser Coasters were undefeated in this tournament, winning the B Division title and also receiving the prestigious “Most Outstanding Team of the Tournament Award”.

In January 2020 the team competed in the Suncoast Spinners tournament medalling again, this time winning a Bronze medal in B Division.

Event of the Year Hervey Bay 100 The first race was held in 2011 and saw 70 athletes competing. It was a lowkey affair that was raced on open roads with no

prize money on offer.

Ten years on, the Hundy has grown into one of the most anticipated races in the Queensland triathlon calendar with almost 1000 participants across the weekend last year.

In 2020, the Hundy was made even more memorable for its COVIDsafe handling and, for many athletes, it heralded a return to racing as many other Australian and overseas triathlons had to be cancelled due to the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic.

Coach of the Year Brian Harrington Brian Harrington, affectionately known as “Harro”, is a full-time teacher and head of the Academic and Cultural Excellence program at Urangan State High School and a volunteer junior triathlon coach.

Over the years, Harro has guided hundreds of junior triathletes across the Fraser Coast, with several going on to compete in regional, state, and national competitions.

BRENDAN BOWERS FOOTBALL: After three rounds and a break for Easter, the Wide Bay Premier League continues this Saturday with the Fraser Coast seeking further wins to enhance their start to the season.

The Doon Villa Magpies currently sit in the second position with two wins and a draw from their three matches.

They are only two points behind competition leaders Brothers Aston Villa.

Granville, Fraser Flames and Across the Waves are level on six, with the Kawungan Sandy Straits Jets on four.

The Sunbury Blues are yet to score a point in the competition and sit at the bottom.

If the competition stopped today, two Maryborough teams would be in the semi-finals.

The clubs and teams are not getting ahead of themselves, knowing there is a long season ahead and are focused on this weekend’s matches.

The recent results have caused ripples through the league, with Bundaberg clubs believing that it was a race between them to make the final four.

This weekend matches Granville’s play Sunbury at Federation Park Maryborough at 6 pm with Doon Villa playing S.C Corinthians in Bundaberg.

The KSS Jets host Bingera in Hervey Bay while Across the Waves play Brothers Aston Villa. The Fraser Flames have the bye.

In the women’s premier league, Fraser Coast clubs hold three of the top four positions.

Sunbury is three points leaders over KSS Jets while Granville sits in the fourth position, a further three points behind.

All three matches for this weekend’s round played in Bundaberg, with Sunbury playing Bingera while Granville is up against the United Park Eagles. KSS Jets play Across the Waves while Tinana has the bye.

LOCAL LEGEND: Jeff Morris is the definition of a pillar of the community. A more fitting recipient of the Club Person of the Year Award recently announced at the Fraser Coast Sports Awards would be hard to find.

Morris wears many hats, including the Hervey Bay Triathlon Club, course coordinator for the Ultra 355, event director Hervey Bay 100, and the under 16 Tinana Football Club coach.

Morris has lived in both Maryborough and Hervey Bay and continues to be active in both communities.

As Vice-president, Morris spends hours organising the club race calendar, coordinating the club’s social media pages, successfully obtaining grants for equipment for athletes and events, and assisting with running between six and seven local club events per year.

As Event Director of the Hervey Bay 100, Jeff is

the driving force behind the large-scale multisport event affectionately known as “the Hundy”.

The event is solely volunteer-run through the efforts of the small committee led by Jeff. He gives up between 10 to 20 hours per week yearround.“I don’t take on roles for recognition; I do it for the betterment of our clubs and our community,” he said.

Tri Club compliance officer Kirsty Smith knows Morris is deserving of the accolade.

“He is proud of our community and is motivated to put events on to show off the region,” Smith said.

“Jeff is awesome, and we are lucky to have him in our club,” she said.

Deputy Mayor Darren Everard values the commitment of Morris to the community.

“He runs good events with attention to detail, and he involves the entire community,” he said.

As if he does not have enough on his plate, he is now coaching his son’s Tinana’s football team.

“They needed a coach, so why wouldn’t I help out,” he said.
