ARCHITECTURE

SPIRAL CHAPEL

This building addresses the need for a quiet meditation space for larger groups on the University of Kansas Campus. The design is influenced by the tiered roof structures of numerous religious buildings across the world. The Borgund Stave Church in particular inspired this design. The project’s parameters included making this a timber structure, so I utilized several wooden precedents in my design process. In terms of the shape and circulation pattern, I looked for a more natural precedent. The nautilus shell shape was not only conducive to the flow of visitors, but also adds visual interest to the surrounding area populated by rectangular prisms. The fibonacci sequence also played an integral role in how I layed out my building and its proportions.

A non-denominational chapel for Pioneer Cemetery

While the process of designing and constructing this project and model was rigorous, it was also one of my favorite designs to work with. It has a nice blend of practicality and whimsical form that lend itself to be an interesting and engaging building. I also furthered by skills in Revit by a wide margin while working on this project. Not only did the curved form force me to learn the proper modeling techniques, but I also took a step forward in my ability to produce orthographic drawings with this program.

FIRE HOME

This building addresses the need for a fire station within North Lawrence, KS. There is a significant gap in the emergency service within this area and this design seeks to not only rectify that, but also improve the lives of those who occupy this building. The driving force of this design is efficiency. A fire station must be compact and easily navigable for the safety of the community it serves.

A fire station and home for firefighters in North Lawrence

The next factor pushing this design forward was the idea of making not a fire house but a fire home. This building focuses on welcoming, cozy environments to aid firefighters in decompressing after strenuous work days. To achieve a ‘home’ style I utilized gabled roofs to match the suburban housing in the area as well as large arched windows. Daylighting this space was also necessary as firefighters spend days on end within their stations. The dorm hallway utilizes a clerestory lighting system while the inner rooms face a courtyard.

A re-imagining of the Bridge Lab as a social coffee lounge

THE ROOST

This building addresses the need for a relazing space and access to 24/7 caffeine for University of Kansas’s School of Architecture and Design and School of Fine Arts students. This is a re-imagining of the current Bridge Lab into a social space that will literally and figuratively brigde the gap between the two schools. I designed this space by combining the idea of a large potted plant wall with cutout reading and studying nooks. The cubic form ended up mimicing the KUbe that will be constructed soon, and

the timber material ties the Forum into this space as well. The glass block facade repeats the interior design while also providing privacy for students occupying the area. The winding path on the floor mimics a river, calling back to the initial plant life inspiration. It also serves the purpose of guiding people through the more informal seating spaces.

PERSONAL ARTWORK

I have been studying and practicing art in various forms for the last seven years, both inside and outside classroom settings. This is a selection of works I completed for commissioned work and academic assignments. My primary medium is through digitial programs, especially Procreate. I am also profficient in pen and ink drawings and graphite illustration. I have drawn anything from cafeteria chairs, to my dog, to live models.

These skills transfer directly into my architectural studies and design process as I can easily visualize and communicate my ideas on paper. My work with clients has also exposed me to experience in collaborative design and figuring out what people want.

My interest in illustration began in middle school, and since then I have been commissioned for several pieces. These have ranged from landscapes and portraits, to company team graphics.
