How to Determine Whether One Is Suffering From Post Traumatic Stress Disorder You may not be aware but someone close to you can be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) and if not treated, he/she may be threatened by this anxiety disorder. PSTD is mostly associated with battle and rape-scarred victims- with military combat being a common cause among men- however, any single or series of events can trigger this disorder if it overwhelms one with helplessness and hopelessness, mostly if the event is uncontrollable or unpredictable. This problem is different for every person as the stress tolerance level and nervous system of each individual is different. PST symptoms start developing within hours or days after the traumatic event/s and may take a long time to appear. The 3 main symptom types are listed below: Averting Reminders- The concerned person may try to avoid places, activities or even thoughts that remind him/her of the traumatic incident. Again, one may be completely unable to remember the incident altogether or parts of it. One may also feel emotionally numb or socially detached or lack interest in life altogether. Emotional Arousal and Increased Anxiety- Such symptoms include problem in sleeping, anger or irritability outbursts, feeling jumpy, low concentration power, getting startled easily and “hypervigilance”. Trauma Re-experience- One may start re-experiencing the tragic event through flashbacks, memories and nightmares along with feelings of intense physical reactions and distress when the event is reminded (for example- nausea, sweating and pounding heart) While professional or medical assistance might come of help to a PTSD patient, other people’s experiences are also beneficial for recovery. BRAIN PAIN is a book by Ret. Major Anthony Jones in which he talks about his Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and PTSD experiences post his military combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). The wounded warrior went through severe emotional and physical tribulations such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, concussion, post concussion syndrome and cluster headaches. His story entails how he battled against the odds, using newer medical treatments, especially Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Botox, exercise, meditation, medical marijuana and acupuncture to get rid of the excruciating headaches, and how he learned that he can make his life worth living even with the pain. His journey through these phases and his attainment of Enduring Freedom through Music therapy, Mountain biking, Snowboarding, Horse Therapy and Equine Therapy is an encouragement to anyone.
