1_Kaw Environmental Magnet School

The focus of this project was to design a building that serves as an environmental magnet school in botany and agriculture for the Wyandotte Community. This building would be located on Kaw Point Park, by the convergence of the Kansas and Missouri River.

Wyandotte County

- Median Household Income: $48,093

- Bachelor Degree or Higher: 19%

- Lowest in Kansas

- 15% less than Kansas & USA

- Biology, Agriculture, & Environmental

Scheince: 7.5%

- Fourth Highest Category

Proposal

These statistics reveal the perfect opportunity to design a magnet school for the surrounding high schools. This school will provide dual credit classes to bridge the gap between high school and college.

ALL SCHOOLS WITHIN 10 MILES OF THE
SITE

The preexisting Kaw Point site consists of nearly 30% concrete, a durastic over estimate for the actual amount of activity at this park.

Now, the park is consumed by walkable paths surrounded by local tallgrasses that lead not only to the river, but the magnet school, a greenhouse, and outdoor plant study area.

Each Manipulation of the form was to create the optimal promgrammatic spaces. The biggest influence to these moves were the view of the river.

Entrance Outdoor Gallery Pathway
Connection Private One Stories Space View to River

The building’s entrance leads you to the public area. To the right is the education wing (semi private) and the deeper in the building, the more private the spaces become.

The circulation goes mainly along one axis so each space has a grand view of the river.

The clerestory, overhang, and height of windows allows for ample winter sun and minimal summer sun.

The windows on both side of the building and the clerestory allows for able circulation of air throughout the building.

The slanted roof allows for rainwater to be harvested directly to the outdoor plant study area.

2_Riverside Pavilion

The riverside pavilion is an open air structure located in North Lawrence. This structure sits beside the Kansas River and is used as a gathering for 4-6 people and a guide. The purpose of this project was to preserve and appreciate the surrounding site contexes which will be shown in this spread.

Moment 2

Moment 1

As you walk along the site path, you notice trees run along the river about ten feet above where the water meets the land. And just parallel to the trees, you begin to see ‘ microcoves .’ as shown in the site map, they are small indents in the land creating open, inviting semispherical spaces. This is shown in moment 1. What was just to the right of this moment made this site location particularly valueable: a natural landing that allowed one to see the river at its full (Moment 2).

As you walk towards the second moment, the ceiling soon rises ten feet and you begin to get hit by the sunlight as your attention becomes drawn to the vastness of the Kansas River.

Intimate

The first moment you experience is the intimacy of nature as the ceiling drops down two feet and you become surrounded by the microcove and encapsulated by the details of nature.

3_Art Center Design School

This project was a design school focused on the design of the building in relation to it’s site. This included the building’s form, materials used, and program.

Precedents

The inspiration of both corten steel and wood come from the railroad tracks being a prominent element of the site with steel and wood being the railroad track’s fundamental materials.
