Help Out! (The Silenced Woman)

With very literal translation from elements of Brandt’s “Helfen Sie Mit! (Die Frauenbewegte)” (Help Out! (The Liberated Woman)) this self portrait illustrates my own personal struggle finding my voice as a young woman and artist today. Brandt’s montage illustrates the struggle of the New Woman after World War I. Although “Help Out! (The Slienced Woman)” was made in new medium, I still held true to the rectangular and geometric precision of Brandt’s photomontage.

The Gaze

“The Gaze” takes much compositional inspiration from Brandt’s “Mit Allen Zehn Fingern” (With All Ten Fingers). The use of line is obviously derived from the directional line in the montage while the use of color is introduced. However, the relationship between man and woman is not translated exactly. Brandt’s image shows a man uninterested in a young woman. “The Gaze” shows the opposite and strongly implies the harsh gaze of a man on the women beneath and their struggle to escape it.

Objects

All imagery in “Objects” comes directly from Brandt’s “Idoles Modernes” (Modern Idols). This montage illustrates the objectification of women in society. The fragmentation of the women’s bodies and the shading of the faces of the women from Brandt’s original image comments on the loss of identity that women are subjected to today when they are valued for their body parts rather than their ideas, messages, or creations.
