Martin News MR. WAAGEN-MOVING BACK TO “NORMAL” The past nineteen months have been anything but “normal” as all aspects of society and the world has been dealing with the pandemic. Many challenges arose including the education of our students at Montpelier School. Students, staff and parents had their routines upended and we all had to adjust and learn on the fly. Fortunately, there is starting to be a feeling of being back to “normal” with students attending school in person every day. It truly is wonderful to see every student enter the building each day and hear the sounds of school. (Continued pg. 5)

MR. HANNASCH Mr. Hannasch’s favorite part of school so far is that we are not distant learning anymore, and we don’t have many covid restrictions. His favorite things he's done or plans to do for the school is the stem lab, drone program, and working at taking behaviors out of grades. He would like to get things that students like and want so they have some personalized aspects for showing up. He would also like students to keep coming to school and trying our best. The theme for this school year is to strive to be 1% better every day.

PRE-SCHOOL The preschoolers’ favorite part of school is dinosaurs, recess, art, gym, music, and lunch. The projects they did were to make a mummy and Spookley the Square Pumpkin. Something they want to get better at is run, play, and music. Their favorite part of Halloween is dressing up. Their favorite can-

dies are Nerds, bubble gum lollipops, M&Ms, candy corn, and suckers. They are going to dress up as Minnie Mouse, Batman, Woody, Spiderman, a kitty, a ladybug, a werewolf, and a dog.

KINDERGARTEN For the kindergartners, they say their favorite part of school is either playing outside or eating snacks. For their projects, they did pumpkins, Frankenstein, and log cabins.

The majority of the class said that they wanted to be better at reading. They said that their favorite Red Ribbon dress up day was “Decades Day,” and their favorite part of Halloween is eating candy and dressing up. Their favorite candies are chocolate, candy corn, suckers, and gummy worms.

Their costumes this year are Bell, Power Ranger, Ninja, and Hero guy.

Ms. Schrader’s favorite part of school so far is seeing all the kids dressed up. They have made lots of projects for October and back to school. She wants the kids to be better at their letters and sounding out words. She just wants more energy.

Halloween Pictures from Red Ribbon Week

MUSIC Mrs. Lynch said her favorite part of school was working with students and getting to know them better. For projects, her classes have been working on sight reading and getting better at reading notes. She wants her students to continue improving their music reading skills and playing/singing technique to accelerate their growth as musicians. She also hopes to see everyone in the community come and enjoy the school’s music concert on December 16 at 7 pm in the gym.

FIRST GRADE When I interviewed the 1st graders, their favorite part of school was Music, Science, and Math. A project they really enjoyed in the first quarter was making paper owls. They want to get better at Music and Math. Their favorite Red Ribbon Week dress up days were PJ Day, Boot Day, and Throwback day. They also look forward to dressing up for Halloween and getting lots of candy! Some of them are planning to dress up as pirates.

ELEMENTARY BASKETBALL We have three boys out for elementary basketball this season. Their game record is zero wins to three losses. They are working hard to get better. Their favorite parts are getting out early and playing games. One couldn't decide because it is all too fun! Two of them are proud that they have made three pointers. One of them would be so excited if they got passed so they could make the shot and that would make them very proud. The hardest part that they are facing is the defenders and getting the ball passed to them. They will get into the swing of it in no time!

SECOND GRADE The second graders really like math and science, and are trying to get better at all of their subjects. They have completed some projects already this year. One was based on the Crankenstein book, and they also made and carved foam pumpkins! Some of their favorite Red Ribbon Week events were pajama day and costume day. They can't wait until Halloween to dress up and get candy! Some of them

are dressed up as the Flash, Dark Shadow, and a unicorn. Sounds like the second grade is really looking forward to the second quarter,

THIRD GRADE Lots of third graders said that their favorite part of school was math. A few said that lunch and gym were their favorite part of school. They have made bridges and origami frogs. When asked what they wanted to be better at, most said math and reading. Almost everybody said that for Spirit week boots day was their favorite. Their favorite parts of Halloween were dressing up and eating candy. Ms. Kramer’s goal for all of them is to get better at reading.

FOURTH GRADE By: Miranda Witt

The fourth-grade class is mostly excited about science class this year. They have been doing a lot of investigations and going into the SMART lab! They also like being in book clubs during reading time. The fourth graders have sketchbooks and they like to do art on Fridays as well.

During Red Ribbon Week, most of the students dressed up on all of the days and had fun doing it All of the fourth graders are working on how to set goals for themselves.

Some of the goals they have are to be better spellers, remember to read every day, remember to bring their homework every day, and improve their reading by answering questions when they read. Everyone is looking forward to Halloween and going trick or treating. They want to get a lot of candy and eat it all that night. Some favorite candies are Twix, Snickers, and Kit Kat. FIFTH GRADE The fifth graders were very excited to talk about their favorite subject in school! A surprising amount of them enjoyed Math the most. A couple of them liked History as well.

For their favorite Red Ribbon Week day, almost all of them were the most excited for “Dress Up Day”. A couple of them were excited for the future career day, and decades day was extremely popular as well.

Cows are a very popular Halloween costume for the fifth graders this year. The Halloween costumes include: cows, reaper, link, a dead fairy, wolf, a cowgirl, and a cheerleader. The favorite candies included; Reese’s, Sour Skittles, Nerds, Snickers, KitKat, and Twix. Most of their favorite parts of Halloween are either the candy or seeing everyone’s costumes and decorations.

Mr. Nelson’s favorite part of being at school is being with the kids. They’ve done a couple projects like going to the smart lab to make spinning tops. He thinks that the kids need to work on learning to respect themselves and the people around them.

Because, hey, they’re children.

MR. WAAGEN-MOVING BACK TO “NORMAL” (Continued from pg. 1) Routines of all types are getting back into full swing, including the regular requirements that schools must do on a periodic basis. Students have been practicing fire drills, the building as had its asbestos inspection that is required every three years, and students have participated in the fall NWEA testing.

One activity that our entire school community will be participating in this year is the accreditation process with Cognia (formerly AdvancED). Every five years, schools are required to go through the accreditation review process to determine if the school is meeting the needs of the students and community. The school will be submitting documents for the Cognia review team to look through, checking for a variety of information. The team will also be meeting with different groups of stakeholders including students, staff, community members, and students. The actual review will occur in early February and prior to that time the school will be asking for volunteers to be interviewed. Input provides important feedback to the review team which they will share with the school to assist in areas that could use improvement.

I want to thank each member of our Montpelier School family for their patience, flexibility, and understanding the past nineteen months. This has not been an easy time, but I am confident as we move back to “normal” our school and students will thrive and have a positive school experience. Thank you!

ELEMENTARY VOLLEYBALL For elementary volleyball, they said that their favorite part was spiking or hitting the ball. The hardest part for most of them was learning how to dig and hitting across the quart. Wins and losses in sixth grade was five to six and in fifth grade it was 4 out of 6.

They all agreed that Oaks or LaMoure were the hardest to play against.

SIXTH GRADE The sixth graders have different favorite parts of the school year so far. Some picked art and Mr. Nelson as their favorite part of school so far. Others were science and social studies. The sixth graders were doing the same projects with the fifth graders. They made dinosaur brochures and did lots of stem lab projects!

Before Christmas break, they all had different goals! They wanted to be better at art, spelling, getting their work done on time and basketball, and the most important thing of all, one person wants to put glasses on Kermit the frog!

Their favorite days from the Red Ribbon Week were very interesting. One person couldn’t decide between “Boot

Day” and “Hocus Pocus.” Two people each also picked “Hocus Pocus” and “Decades Day.” Only one person had picked “Pajama Day.” Their favorite part of Halloween was scaring people, babies, and their friends. Most of them had costume ideas but three of them either weren’t going, or they didn’t know yet. They wanted to be a plane doctor, grim reaper, and a ninja! Their favorite candies are Sour Patch Kids, Skittles, M &Ms, caramel apples, Zombie Skittles, and Milky Way. They were a very interesting group to interview for their favorite part of Halloween!

ENGLISH Miss Bear’s favorite part of her job is helping and encouraging her students to find books they enjoy reading. She also enjoys having discussions with her students but feels all of the classes besides the freshman class could work on voicing their opinions more.

For projects, she doesn’t have very many projects going around. The only things that resemble projects are also in the freshman class. They are going to write a novel, and they also play Dungeons and Dragons each Friday. She has included some sample writings of students this past quarter for your reading enjoyment.

Writing from Ms. Bear’s– August Harms I hate it when people make movies out of books. It’s like, every time there is a book that sort of does well, they are like, “We have to make a movie out of this to get even more money!”. And 90% of the time it sucks. Like, if you are gonna make a movie at least make sure it’s a good one.

The Lord of the Flies movie is a weird one. Honestly you can't watch it without reading the book first. Like, you don’t even know who the characters are when you have read the book. And the movie is all over the place skipping around without a real plot or whatever.

Also. They made no real attempt at making the movie actually worthy of being a movie. According to Ms. Bear, they just threw a bunch of boys on an island and let them run around screaming with a general idea of what to act out. I don’t think that it worked out very well, but movies may have sucked in the 60’s, I don’t know.

Can I talk about how hilarious the ending of the movie was? So Raph is about to die and is crawling like a lobster that's had its tail cut off and a ten pound weight on its head. Which is absolutely hysterical until he runs into a pair of white shoes. At least I think they are white the movie is in black and white.

The camera slooowly pans up to this dude looking at Ralph like he is weird. I hope that he wasn’t an actor because if they could find an actor for a role that has like five seconds in the movie, but they don’t have actors for every main character in the movie, I would be sad.

And what about how they treat the island? They have no respect for nature at all. They send rocks down hills destroying trees. They burn an island to the ground for the last scene in the movie. The last scene. I suppose that the book is about the evil of mankind, so I suppose it’s fitting that they would destroy an island just for a movie.

Writing from Ms. Bear’s– Ian Lien (World War Toast) My worst fear has come true. The toast is revolting. The war has only begun and I fear it is only going to get worse. I am in the trenches with my rifle praying to god (if there is one). The toast keeps firing and wont seas. So many men have died just to get some breakfast. My comrades have been killed by loaves of bread. How has it come to this?

I fired and fired but they just kept coming. We brought out the heavy artillery. But it wasn't enough; they had ten times the firepower with their toasters. We sent out tanks but those were destroyed easily. We’ve killed so many but they kept coming. The battlefield is coated in blood and jelly. A loaf of bread fell in my trench. They were using mortars! I ran and ducked for cover just in time but my comrades were not so lucky. I then realized that this must come to an end. I fired and fired, pouring through rounds, I needed to avenge my fallen comrades.

I then realized I was out of rounds before another mortar fell. I ducked for cover again but one of my feet was blown off. I bandaged my wounds, grabbed one of the grenades and threw it. I continued until I used all of them. The toasts were advancing quickly and I was done for and then I saw it. One of the fallen soldiers had a bazooka I fired and fired but to no avail and then I realized it’s toast I can eat it. I ate and ate until I felt like I would burst. I then saw something glorious it was reinforcements I told them all that we need to eat the toast and we all ate and ate until the war was won.

BUSINESS CLASSES Mr. Wright has been really enjoying projects, and modifying them. He is really joyful for having one of his teams place third in Tech Wars. His seventh graders have torn apart computers recently, and presented them to the elementary students. They have also done some 3D Halloween prints for one of their projects. His eighth graders have been creating presentations and newsletters with Microsoft PowerPoint and Word . He also did a project to code some drones and robots with them. His ninth graders did a job shadow in Jamestown, and are currently

working on career research projects. Multimedia has been working on designing shirts using a Cricut, and have been working on taking photos and putting together yearbooks. Marketing class has been analyzing the free enterprise system, and learning about different political and economic philosophies. Mr. Wright would like the students to be more goal orientated, and to actually reach those goals made.

HEALTH AND GYM Mr. Entzi has been enjoying Seventh, Eighth, and Sophomore Health. He has done many activities during this semester in health class. He has been doing a cooking class with all of his health classes. He has also been doing a general first aid and CPR class with them. He would like to see some more participation in his physical education class and for them to take it more seriously. He would also like to see some better eating and drinking habits.

Writing from Ms. Bear’s– Mylehe Kastet I can’t wait for my baby sister to be born! She is due in like 3 weeks. I’ve always wanted to have a baby sister or something that is my blood for a sister. She is going to be my half sister but that’s okay. Next Thursday will be 2 weeks, but she could come anytime now but you never know. Luckily, we have all her stuff ready to go when she is born. She has so many clothes, especially pink clothes.

There are way too many pink clothes, like you need some different colors too! We already got her rocking chair and her little bathtub to put in the bathtub. We also got her play pen or bed set up. The cool thing is that there is a changing spot on it too so you don’t have to worry about laying a blanket down on the floor to change her diaper.

I am not excited about crying and screaming all day long, especially at night. I think she is going to be a pretty cute baby! I wanna know the name so badly but my parents won’t tell me. At least I’ll get to know sooner or whenever she is born. As soon as she’s born I am going to facetime my dad to see what she looks like. While they are gone we have to wait for like 3 to 2 days for them to come back so Jennifer made food bags for our suppers so we know what to make for the next 3 days she is in the hospital. I hope she comes sooner because I just can’t wait to have a baby sister! The one thing I hope to do the most with her is to feed her and help her get ready for the day. So she will be extra cute.

CROSS COUNTRY August’s best time in a 4k race was 17:43. His favorite and least favorite parts are running. He says he enjoys the running part, but not the aftermath when his body hurts.

Clara’s best time was in a 5k and it was 23:15 Her favorite part of being involved with Cross Country is running. She’s proud of herself for making it to state. Her least favorite part is the feeling during the run/race.

Ty’s best time was in a 3k and it was 13:41. His favorite part is running and his least favorite part is the feeling during the middle of a run/race. He’s very proud of himself for running a 4k.

SCIENCE In the high school science room, they have done a lot. Ms. Anderson is most excited about being able to go outside for environmental science on Wednesdays. She is also very excited that we have started Martin Time, and the school provides snacks for the students that stay for it. Martin Time gives them a great opportunity to stay after school and work on school work. She likes all the different field trips that the high school has been able to go on as well, like Prairie Waters.

They have done many projects in the high school science room such as food webs, STEM projects, and leaf collections. The students also voted on who’s food web was the best. With the STEM projects, the seventh graders made cell models on the 3D printer!

Before Christmas break, Ms. Anderson wants to have more hands-on projects with the students and learn what fits each student best. It could be projects or worksheets that are on topic with what they are learning. Overall, it has been a good start to the year in the science classroom!

HISTORY

MATH

Ms. Leggate says that her favorite part about school is seeing how much fun kids have in classes. In her class, they have completed many projects such as posters, candles, medieval castles using edible supplies, and individual coats of arms. She looks forward to more projects and fun this next quarter.

Mr. Stutliene has enjoyed reflecting back on the stages each of his students are at when he was their age. In occupational math, he has worked on incorporating the new SMART lab by having them build models and working with drones. One goal he has is that he would like to be better at figuring out how some students operate and change.

JH FOOTBALL The Junior High Football Team had a really fun season with seven wins and one loss. Jacob’s favorite part of playing football was pancaking people. His favorite play was during the first game kick off, and his worst part about football was doing tire laps. Hunter’s favorite part was being able to play with his friends. His favorite play was when he got to the five-yard line, which was almost a touchdown! His worst part about football was practicing for a big game. Max’s favorite part was winning a game, and his favorite play was fifty to nothing. His worst part about it was doing the push-ups. Overall, they had a really good season, with only one loss.

JH VOLLEYBALL We had two girls out for junior high volleyball this year. In eighth grade, Mylehe said her favorite part was the games. She also said that she is super proud of her good spikes in the year. The hardest part for her was transitioning to different positions on the quart. She said that they had won three out of twelve matches. The hardest team to play was Ellendale in her opinion. For the seventh grade, they won nine out twelve. Isabella said her favorite part was also the games. She says she is most proud of saving the ball. The hardest team for her was LaMoure.
