... Christophe Szpajdel, the designer of over 7000 death- and black-metal logos. These logos seem like they are about as simple as design work can get. . . until you try to make one. Posted by aaron at Saturday, November 21, 2009 (http://www.theyshootactorsdontthey. com/2009/11/total-death.html)

Emperor logo designed by Christophe Szpajdel

ABOUT

I am myself interested in metal music and in logos. I think that logos can tell much about behind them. Metal has too many styles and the purpose is to find out if they logos are different. Also I have teenagers who ask me if the music they listen to is under category ‘metal’. And it is not secret that logos of ‘metal’ had attracted many people with their oustanding design and sometimes unreadability. So I made this book with selection of main styles and few examples for each style. Also some research included about popularity of this music, meaning of band names, most used words in their lyrics and other interesting information. If you would like listen to their music link is given with each band.

WHAT THE METAL IS?

06-07

Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo. The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, though they were often critically reviled, a status common throughout the history of the genre. In the mid-1970s Judas Priest helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence; Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Bands in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal such as Iron Maiden followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal had attracted a worldwide following of fans known as "metalheads" or "headbangers". In the 1980s, glam metal became a major commercial force with groups like Mötley Crüe. Underground scenes produced an array of more extreme, aggressive styles: thrash metal broke into the mainstream with bands such as Metallica, while other styles like death metal and black metal remain subcultural phenomena. Since the mid-1990s, popular styles such as nu metal, which often incorporates elements of grunge and hip hop; and metalcore, which blends extreme metal with hardcore punk, have further expanded the definition of the genre. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music)

“Slipknot are not a rock band, they’ve got no tunes, no chords or choruses. They have no idea how to behave onstage and they wear masks and red boiler suits. I came from the Beatles and Little Richard, they came from the circus. Maybe I’m too old to get it, but I don’t mind because they’re crap”-LEMMY (http://www.truemetal.org/unstoppableforce/index2.html)

We accept the following non-metal bands in certain cases: Bands that are no longer metal, but are/were still generally recognized as metal bands (ex: Burzum, Metallica) Grindcore if it’s close enough to death metal (ex: Carcass, Napalm Death) We do NOT accept the following (this is our decision, please don’t argue this): Mallcore, also known as “nu-metal” by some (ex: Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, Drowning Pool, Slipknot) Metalcore, unless it’s clearly more metal than core (e.g Shadows Fall, The Red Chord, Killswitch Engage are OK: Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine are NOT). If you are uncertain, best avoid metalcore bands altogether. Glam rock (ex: Poison, Whitesnake, KISS) Classic rock (ex: Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep) Progressive rock (ex: Yes, King Crimson, The Flower Kings, Spock’s Beard) Hard rock (ex: Guns ‘N Roses, AC/DC, Alice Cooper) Hardcore (ex: Earth Crisis, Converge) Grindcore (and all its variants; noise, crust, etc) with little to zero metal influence (ex: Anal Cunt, Libido Airbag) Punk (ex: The Misfits, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols) Gothic rock (ex: Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Fields of Nephilim) Industrial (ex: Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, KMFDM, N17)

Some of the Burzum ‘logos’

BURZUM STORY: PART XIII - LOGOS

Too many of you write me about “the Burzum logo”.

08-09

In 1991 having a “cool” logo was one of the most important things to the metal bands in Norway. Immortal got one, Mayhem already had one, Darkthrone had one, and so forth. They were full of inverted crosses and other “satanic” and “cool” symbols, and some of them were even rather hard to read - or rather “interpret”. Initially, when I left Old Funeral and rekindled my own project, and changed name from Uruk-Hai to Burzum, I wanted a logo myself, and a female friend volunteered to draw me one. She did and everything was fine, until I realised that I am following a trend. Why would I do that, when everything I did was supposed to be a revolt against trends? So instead I decided to have no logo, and just use a nice font instead. In late 1991 I had no easy access to fonts of any type other than the ones found on my typewriter. This was before the time of mainstream Internet. I had to purchase some type of sticker-fonts, and I could only afford a few sets, and then use them to “build” words, letter by letter. For some reason, either because I ran out of the right stickers-letters, or because I did it on purpose - I really cannot remember which it is - I wrote the Burzum name with capital letters and I used the only non-ordinary font they had in the book store; Gothic. When I released the début album I instructed the record company, DSP, to use this font for not only the band title, but also for all other text on the album. The Burzum name was in other words not really a logo, but just the band name written in Gothic letters together with other Gothic text. After a while I stopped thinking about logos, and for some

reason I didn’t change the type of font used on the albums. Thus many started to think of the Burzum name in Gothic font as “the Burzum logo”. It never was. The name was the point; the font was and still is irrelevant. For “Dauði Baldrs” or “Hliðskjálf” (don’t remember which one) I wanted to just use an even more common font, like Arial or something, but for some reason I didn’t after all. Don’t remember why I didn’t. Some memories are lost forever - because they matter no whit. For “Belus” I finally decided to use a different font, to stress the point that Burzum doesn’t have a logo, but also because this is a new beginning to Burzum. I found some free fonts on the Internet and picked one I felt suited the concept of the album; Belus, the oak god (and his wife, Eduno, the meadow maiden). The one I decided to use looked kind of flowery, fantasy-like and was exactly what I was looking for. I am sure it has been used by others before me - it’s free to download for every single individual on Earth - and I don’t try to be original. I’m done being original. I just want to do whatever I feel like, regardless of what the rest of the world may or may not do, and I don’t want a logo. I simply use a font that fits the concept of the album. I am myself, not just the opposite of those I dislike. If I ever feel like having a logo for Burzum I will do that as well, by the way. Nothing is carved into rock; not logos, not decisions about logos or anything else. Not even the Burzum name is... According to nationally spoken languages, name of the logo is translated, so people can read it. Overall look of the logo has remained recognizable, thanks to special elemets.

RECOGNITION OF LOGOS

10-11

This is a scanned image of the index page of the “Book of the Demons” There is a parody of ‘Depeche mode’ logo, or to say more accurate, parody of satanist band logo. In case you do not know who the ‘ Depeche Mode’ is or if you consider logo ‘unreadable at first, then first impression of the logo is that this is a satanist logo, again thanks to the special elements and style used.

SYMBOLS AND ELEMENTS

12-13

This is a scanned image of the index page of the “Book of the Demons”

Symbols and special elements have been used always. Image on the left is taken from the book ‘Marks of Excellence’. It displays Royality recognition signs. Crown on a top is for Royal, letter C, for example, is for Charles, number means that it was Charls X. Also need to make note of of the simetry or mirror effect which makes these marks look better.

19-23

Demons Behemoth and Leviathan Names of gigantic beasts or monsters described in Job xl. The former is from a root denoting “coil,” “twist”; the latter is the plural form of “behemah”=”beast.” —Biblical Data: Ever since Bochart (“Hierozoicon,” iii. 705), “behemoth” has been taken to denote the hippopotamus; and Jablonski, to make it correspond exactly with that animal, compared an Egyptian form, “p-ehe-mu” (= “water-ox”), which, however, does not exist. The Biblical description contains mythical elements, and the conclusion is justified that these monsters were not real, though the hippopotamus may have furnished in the main the data for the description. Only of a unique being, and not of a common hippopotamus, could the words of Job xl. 19 have been used: “He is the first [A. V. “chief”] of the ways of God [comp. Prov. viii. 22]; he that made him maketh sport with him” (as the Septuagint reads; A. V. “He that made him can make his sword to approach unto him”; comp. Ps. civ. 26); or “The mountains bring him forth food; where all the beasts of the field do play” (Job xl. 20). Obviously behemoth is represented as the primeval beast, the king of all the animals of the dry land, while leviathan is the king of all those of the water, both alike unconquerable by man (ib. xl. 14, xli. 17-26). Gunkel (“Schöpfung und Chaos,” p. 62) suggests that behemoth and leviathan were the two primeval monsters corresponding to Tiamat (= “the abyss”; comp. Hebr. “tehom”) and Kingu (= Aramaic “’akna” = serpent”) of Babylonian mythology. Some commentators find also in Isa. xxx. 6 (“bahamot negeb” = “beasts of the south”) a reference to the hippopotamus; others again, in Ps. lxxiii. 22 (“I am as behemoth [=”beasts”; A. V. “a beast”] before thee”); but neither interpretation has a substantial foundation. It is likely that the leviathan and the behemoth were originally referred to in Hab. ii. 15: “the destruction of the behemoth [A. V. “beasts”] shall make them afraid” (comp. LXX., “thee” instead of “them”).E. G. http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com

Leviathan Ambient / Black Metal / Metal Pure, primitive, cult, home recorded evil... Verräter: two discs, twenty two tracks, one hundred and forty three minutes of buzzing, howling, pummelling black metal. Think Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal, but with all

sorts of weird twists and sonic surprises. Sure, LEVIATHAN is grimmer than grim metal that the frost & forest lords of Norway should bow down to, but it’s also pure expression unfettered by genre restraints, although informed and inspired by them. (http://www.myspace.com/leviathanx666x)

According to the December 2007 issue of Decibel Magazine, the Darkthrone logo was designed by Tomas Lindberg of At the Gates. ...the band is named after the dead plateau of evil and darkness in the land of Mordor that features in J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings.

Taken from The Complete Tolkien Companion by J.E.A. Tyler: “Gorgoroth ‘Dreadful Horror’ (The Sindarin or Grey-elven tongue) - A word in the Grey-elven tongue, used for two different locations, distinct in time and space.... the second instance is the name of the ‘Haunted Plains’ of Mordor; the great plateau which occupied the north-western area of that country, a desolate, arid land, pocked with craters and fuming pits and riven with many deep crevasses. In the centre of the plain rose the smouldering cone of the volcano Orodruin.” During October 2007, Gorgoroth members Gaahl and King decided to kick founding member Infernus out of the band. A legal battle over the rights of the name and logo between Infernus and Gaahl / King then ensued. Gaahl and King carried on touring without Infernus for around 18 months after copyrighting the band’s name and logo (before ‘firing’ him), while Infernus put together a new line-up. Oslo City District Court delivered a verdict on March 10th 2009 on the main question in the Gorgoroth trademark case, which took place at the end of January 2009, deciding that King ov Hell’s trademark registration #243365 of the band name was not valid and shall therefore be deleted. The court states that King ov Hell and Gaahl excluded themselves from the band Gorgoroth when they tried to fire Infernus in October 2007. The court further states that Infernus cannot be excluded from Gorgoroth, unless he himself decides to quit. The remaining issues concerning financial matters and such are yet to be decided upon. While many musicians have come and gone, Infernus has always stayed in the band, though the last two albums before the split were almost entirely composed by King. King has said that he “never really left” Gorgoroth despite his brief official absence between 2006 and 2007, which according to Infernus happened due to King’s “difficulties combining playing in a clear-cut Satanic metal band as Gorgoroth with the fact that he is full-time employed as a primary school teacher.” http://www.myspace.com/gorgoroth

Lacuna Coil Gothic Metal/Rock (early), Alternative Rock (later) Darkness, Loss, Love, Despair 3.1. What does ‘LACUNA COIL’ mean? The closest English translation is ‘Empty Spiral’, it was chosen when the band changed their name from Ethereal and it is meant to express the bands vision on life. In the words of Cristina Scabbia; “It’s half Italian, half English - Lacuna’s an Italian word from the Latin meaning lack of memory or emptiness. ‘Coil’ is a spiral.” 3.2. What does that ‘oriental symbol’ represent? It is in fact a stylised ‘L’ and ‘C’ with the C crossing the L halfway down the vertical. LACUNA COIL have changed logos a couple of times now. A second version of the logo was turned about 30 degrees, the ‘C’ was changed, and it was enclosed in a circle. A third version of the logo is now used, it is a return to the more ‘oriental’ look but is more symmetrical. You can see all three versions at http://www.emptyspiral.net/images/lacuna_coil_logos.gif (http://www.emptyspiral.net/modules.php? name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=69) http://www.myspace.com/lacunacoil

Mastodon Technical/Progressive Groove Metal Life, Hardships, Heroic Tales, Mythical Beasts Mastodon consider each of their full length albums to have a different general theme that doesn’t reach as far as a full concept, but their logo and art work for each album represents something different, represented through one of the four elements. Remission represents fire, Leviathan represents water, Blood Mountain represents earth and Crack the Skye represents air (or ether). The symbol a the top middle of their logo changes from album to album. (http://www.metal-archives.com/) Mastodons (extinct) had straight backs, low-domed heads, and a heavy, stocky build with low shoulders and relatively short legs. They had heavy, gently curved upper tusks with little or no lower tusks. Mastodon’s teeth were perfectly shaped for eating leaves and twigs from trees and bushes. The American mastodon was common in North America for over a million years before the Ice Age. Having survived into the Pleistocene, American Mastodons coexisted with mammoths and North America’s first people and went extinct about 11,000 years ago.
