their sensitivity to reward, it may be more effective to motivate your teen’s behavior through reward rather than trying to shape behavior by punishment. While this broad brush stroke information can be gleaned from current brain science, there is still a lot that scientists don’t know about the teen brain. Given that the teen years can serve as a strong foundation for a happy, productive and healthy adulthood, the National Institute of Health initiated a ground-breaking study (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, abcdstudy.org) to follow a group of over 10,000 children across the nation for 10 years until they reach adulthood. The goal is to understand how the adolescent brain develops and the many influences that can help to optimize that development, such as exercise, as well as the factors that might impede development, such as the excessive use of substances or screen time. In fact, researchers at the University of Colorado B o u l d e r ’s I n s t i t u t e o f

Page 6 • www.bouldercountykids.com

Cognitive Science are serving as one of 21 research sites across the U.S. attempting to understand various impacts on adolescents’ physical brain structure and emotional and mental health development over time. Boulder is one of four sites in this study that are specifically testing twins. The idea is to determine the relative influence of studying genetic vs. environment effects. Since identical twins share 100% of their genes, but fraternal twins only share 50%, researchers examine whether there is a significantly higher similarity between identical than fraternal twins, and if so, then assume that genetics plays a

he teen years can be challenging for parents. Their previously docile and adorable child has now turned into someone they don’t quite know or understand. In some ways, their offspring appears to be growing and displays flashes of very adult-like behavior and thinking, and in other ways their behavior and attitudes are baffling. Brain scientists are working on trying to understand how adolescent brain development may explain this apparent paradox. They are learning that reward systems of the brain, highly sensitive to new and novel experiences, start to become more active after puberty, reaching a peak of activity around late adolescence (ages 16-17). At the same time, those portions of the brain involved in controlling and guiding behavior (and resisting temptation) are not quite yet at adult levels. So what does this all mean for parents? Well, first off, that very active reward system means that the types of activities that your child used to love and enjoy (with you and your family) may now seem mundane and boring. Experiences that are different and unexpected are now the things that your teen will find most interesting. It also means that the carrot is likely to be more effective than the stick. While it is, of course, important to place limits on a teen, given

role. For example, if identical twins show significantly more similarity between say, the thickness of a particular region of the brain, than fraternal twins, then that suggests that the factors influencing thickness in that part of the brain are likely to be influenced by genetics. One of the goals of the study is also to help provide parents with information about the results of the study as they become available. Some of that information can be found at the study’s website (abcdstudy.org) but there will also be the possibility for parents to find out more during this coming year.

he Easter Bunny (also called the Easter Rabbit or Easter Hare) is a folkloric figure and symbol of Easter, depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs. Originating among German Lutherans, the “Easter Hare” originally played the role of a judge, evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behavior at the start of the season of Eastertide. The Easter Bunny is sometimes depicted with clothes. In legend, the creature carries colored eggs in his basket, candy, and sometimes also toys to the homes of children, and as such shows similarities to Santa Claus or the Christkind, as they both bring gifts to children on the night before their respective holidays. The custom was first mentioned in Georg Franck von Franckenau’s De ovis paschalibus (‘About Easter Eggs’) in 1682, referring to a German tradition of an Easter Hare bringing Easter eggs for the children. GREEN SCHOOLYARDS

by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II

reen schoolyards are ones that offer places for students, teachers, parents, and community members to have contact with nature! They provide a place for them to play, learn, explore, and grow in an area where the natural world has conscientiously been an integral part of the design. This, by the way, is called Biophilic Design because the concept of Biophelia, of which I have previously written, implies that we as humans are more psychologically healthy when we have contact with nature. Green schoolyards usually have trees, shrubs, or other plants, which can include native gardens, vegetable gardens, trails, and nature play areas. They are often called outdoor classrooms.

Sanchez Discovery Zone They encourage an increase in physical activity and beneficial nature play, which in turn have mental health benefits that relate to improved academic outcomes. For example, studies have shown that high school students who had views of trees from their classrooms had higher standardized test scores and higher graduation rates. This also resulted in a greater percentage of students planning to attend a four-year college. Green schoolyards are havens from stress and promote academic achievement through hands-on, experiential learning in many subject areas, including science,

Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com

math, and language arts. These green areas help students to more easily focus their attention and, therefore, have better control over their behavior. This positively enhances their attitudes toward and engagement with their school. Furthermore, green schoolyards help support creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and imagination. This strengthens the links between free play and learning. Green schoolyards encourage different types of cooperative free play. Dramatic play, for example, utilizes loose parts such as sticks, stones, acorns, and pine cones, which engages the imagination of the students. Exploratory play in nature gives opportunities for children to explore their surroundings. Solitary play allows children to engage in alone, contemplative time finding their very own spot under a bush or behind a rock, or their own special nook. As a boy playing in the woods, I remember that I had such a secret place of my own. Constructive play

allows children to build things out of natural materials, such as their very own fort or shelter. Finally, locomotive play may entail balancing on a stump or walking along a fallen log or just running and jumping over various objects. A good example of an excellent green schoolyard is the new Sanchez Discovery Zone, created by a partnership between the Boulder Valley School District and the City of Lafayette. It has just been added to Sanchez Elementary School. This is part of a major grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GO-CO) Generation Wild that was made to a coalition of environmental educators in Boulder County called Nature Kids/Jovenes de la Naturaleza. This program has been spearheaded by Keith Desrosiers, the executive director at Thorne Nature Experience. Green schoolyards can accommodate different ages and abilities of the students and hold their attention by offering a variety of options that appeal to a wide range of interests. Free play has been shown to promote cooperation and the spirit of negotiation among a group of children. Meaningful outdoor experiences in nature help children to develop a love of and caring for nature and the Earth, while supporting the children’s healthy development. Green schoolyards help develop social/emotional skills. For example, kids feel calmer and less stressed, positive and restored (less

negative emotions), and more resilient (with feelings of competence and better social relationships, including more cooperative play and civil behavior). Most of the research about green schoolyards has been provided by the Children & Nature Network, which is available on-line. I am proud to say that Boulder County has become one of the national leaders in this area!

News about Town... T

horne Nature Experience opened Boulder County’s first licensed nature preschool, only the second in the state of Colorado. Nature preschools and forest kindergartens are quite common in European countries; however, it wasn’t until 2013 that they really started to take off in the US. Since then, the number of outdoor schools for young children has quintupled to 250. U n t i l n o w, r i g o r o u s state childcare licensing regulations and local challenges including the cost of land and zoning are just some of the barriers that have kept nature-based preschools o u t o f o u r c o m m u n i t y. Through a unique partnership with the City of Boulder’s Parks and Recreation and Open Space departments, Thorne was able to overcome these barriers. The new school operates out of the East Boulder Community Center and utilize the Bobolink Trail as its outdoor classroom along with semi-regular field trips to other City of Boulder and Boulder County natural areas, including Thorne’s home at the Sombrero Marsh Environmental Education Center. The program will be limited to 10 participants during its pilot year, and Thorne is hopeful to be offering a week-long, halfday program to 36 children within two years.

Thorne Nature Preschool will foster whole child learning through nature immersion. Early literacy, math, science, arts, social emotional learning, and physical development will all be addressed in an authentic way while children dig in the dirt, balance on tree stumps, explore creeks, and enjoy a snack under a shady tree. Nature play is at the heart of Thorne’s curriculum, allowing children to discover the wonders of the landscape surrounding them, while also discovering their inner landscape through developing relationships with mentors, classmates, and the natural world. WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA?

Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

My family is now all gone and moved away. My husband passed away last year. My grandchildren live 800 miles away. It seems that I find myself alone most of the time now and I am finding it very hard. I can’t seem to find any interest or energy to go out and make new friends. I don’t want to move to a retirement home as I really do love this house. I don’t want to burden my children and their families. Do you have any suggestions on how I can deal with the loneliness I am feeling? Signed empty-nested widow.

A

I just read an article in the New Yorker that talked about the realities of aging; not the fantasy often portrayed in self-help books about the Golden Years. It said that aging is very much a time of loss and often aloneness. We lose our loved ones through attrition as well as death as they move away or become absorbed in their own lives. The result is the situation in which you find yourself. You have a decision to make about how you are going to respond. You needn’t pretend that this is anything but necessary and vital to your survival.

You will need purpose and companionship for the upcoming years, and selfcare needs to be one of the elements of your purpose. Personal hygiene is easy to ignore so include showers and shampoos in your schedule that includes you and your house and your pleasures. Do you like to bake and walk and exercise? Find senior classes and check out senior centers in your area. The Boulder County Area Agency on Aging Calendar o f C l a s s e s , Wo r k s h o p s and Events is posted on bouldercounty.org under Adults and Seniors. Are you on Facebook? Well, you should be as it’s a great way to stay connected and to keep up with far flung friends and family. It’s all about an attitude of personal responsibility that you need to develop, proactive rather than passive. Perhaps you will make friends at these classes or exercise centers. Your situation is a real problem and there are no easy answers. Look for people who need you as well. Everyday do at least one thing that will increase your connection with the outside world. The solution to this problem will not come easily and it’s a battle to be fought every day, from taking a shower to volunteering at the local library to having at least one warm meal. Good Luck!

Q

My father doesn’t seem to enjoy being with his own grandchildren. The girls are ages 4, 7 and 11 and he can only take about 30 minutes and he wants to leave. I

think it is really important that he spends time with the girls. Mom can’t get enough time with them. How can I convince Dad to spend more time with them? Signed frustrated daughter.

A

How can you get your father to want to spend more time with your children? You must first understand his inability to spend more than 30 minutes with them before he loses patience. It must feel to you as though he doesn’t like them but please don’t make that assumption. Perhaps the noise and hyperactivity of three little girls is more than he can tolerate without becoming anxious and uncomfortable. What if he took one daughter out for breakfast at a time, less noise and less activity, a date with Grandpa? Or, a visit to the zoo or local aquarium? Your dad is not your mom. She may be able to juggle the demands of three little girls at the same time, more easily. I suspect he’s always been a bit like this, even when you were young. Try to build on what he can offer instead of lamenting about what he can’t do. Talk to him in that way and see what he says. He may have some ideas of his own. Your daughters might also learn that they need to take other people’s personalities into account when they approach them. This could be a learning experience for all concerned. Learning how to adjust and adapt one’s behavior to respond in an empathetic way, is a life skill that can be taught and learned. There’s an appropriate time for very active behavior and a time to

sit quietly as Grandpa reads you a story.

Q

My mother constantly throws me guilt. I should feel bad about this, or bad about that, or I don’t do enough for her. How can I get my mother off my case? She is driving me crazy. Signed over-guilted 13-year-old son.

A

Using guilt as a motivator is as old as can be imagined. It implies that if you don’t take out the garbage, you don’t love your mother. What she’s really saying is that if you take out the garbage, she will feel loved. There are different ways that people feel loved. There’s a book, The 5 Love Languages, that talks about this fact of life. Google it! Having a good relationship with your mom will make your life much easier and more pleasant. The secret of having a successful relationship is about priorities. Your mom needs to know that you care about her and that her happiness is important to you just as your happiness is important to her. Fighting over garbage and clearing the table seems silly in the end when you should be choosing your battles with her more carefully. You should be clearing the table with a smile on your face because you are a member of this family and it will also give you a better position from which to negotiate other more important issues.

Taylor’s Blog SELF-CARE

I got it, Mom!

by Taylor Cannon

T

he concept of self -care has become a buzzworthy topic in recent years. Selfhelp gurus and authors of online think pieces espouse the necessity of “putting on your own oxygen mask first;” or, in other words, ensuring that your own needs are met so that you are equipped to help others to meet theirs.

Acts of “self-care” that are frequently discussed include meditation, yoga, and candle-

lit bubble baths. And these do undoubtedly serve an important purpose; to calm the nervous system, enable mindfulness and provide a healthful but satisfying feeling of indulgence. But self-care comes in many other less shiny packages. Limiting your spending in order to build your “rainy day” fund is an act of self -care. Getting enough sleep, sunshine, exercise and water are all acts of self-care. Going to see a therapist is an act of self-care. Tending to your needs the way that you might tend to the needs of a loved one—such habits engender self-sufficiency and self-satisfaction, and they reduce stress. Have you ever known someone who works incredibly long and hard, but seems to be perpetually unhappy and overtired? In a society that values productivity over almost all else, taking time away from work in order to ensure your own well-being is a major victory. Self-care can assuredly be taught to children, and it

will have the same positive impacts on their lives as it does on those of their parents. The first act of self-care that is taught to many children is that of self-soothing. This does not specifically apply to allowing a restless baby to cry until she lulls herself back to sleep; we can teach babies to self-sooth by holding them while they cry until they find their own thumb, rather than simply putting a pacifier in their mouth for them at the first sign of discomfort. This sort of supportive encouragement of selfsoothing subliminally teaches babies that they have the ability to solve problems for themselves. As your child grows older, insisting on basic self-care tasks like brushing teeth, drinking plenty of water, and making the bed can create healthy habits from a young age. If kids are taught to do these tasks every day from childhood, they’ll be more likely to prioritize them as the years go by. And regularly discussing the impor-

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH tance of these tasks to your child’s health and happiness can prove to be significantly motivational. Leading by example is another way of demonstrating self care to your children— and one that benefits you, too! It can be tempting to use every spare moment to tidy the house, do yard work or any number of other essential household duties—and while these chores are certainly important, there’s value in balancing the time devoted to them with the time spent simply recharging. My family, for example, has been led by generations of hardworking, driven parents who were highly successful in both their careers and personal lives, but very rarely allowed themselves to sit still and read a magazine during the day. My mother never observed her parents taking the time to relax, and so she grew up with the perception that daytime relaxation is simply not useful or necessary. These sorts of ideas are easily passed down from parent to child, and all that is needed to break the cycle is to sit and breathe more often, and to perhaps explain to your child why you are taking a moment to do so. Each of these self-care activities not only promotes a child’s well-being and happiness, but also encourages and enables parents to have the time and bandwidth to

care for themselves as well. The more self-confident and self-sufficient your child becomes, the better equipped they will be to take on the world as a fully-functional adult. And in the meantime, you’ll have a bit more time to spend taking care of yourself because they’ll be enabled to fulfill their own needs. A win-win situation if ever there was one! BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH From Resentment to Forgiveness

I

say it often. Parenting is probably one of the most difficult and rewarding jobs of life. By the very nature of the depth of our love for our children, we have so many hopes, dreams, ideals and expectations as parents. When they are met, we fly high. And when they are not, we can experience the pain of shame, guilt, anger, resentment and blame. In the next series of articles, I would like to write about how to hold ourselves

and others with care, tenderness and compassion as we grapple with these feelings, so we don’t inadvertently

hurt ourselves, our children and members of our support system. In particular, I would like to explore the topic of forgiveness as a path towards peace with what is, and hope for actualizing our values. The forgiveness I am referring to is not one that asks us to turn the other cheek. It is one that asks us to accept what is. It also asks us to hold onto our value of selfrespect and respect for others. Put another way, this definition asks us to stop hoping for a better past or present. It helps us find a way to stop flogging ourselves and others for shortcomings, mistakes and trespasses as we practice radical acceptance, and use the knowledge of where we are and what resources are available to us to move forward. In this column, I will provide an overview for a process of forgiveness. In future columns, I will explore each step of the process in more depth. They are: Acceptance—we can’t change the past or the pres-

ent. We can change our relationship with it. This is radical acceptance. Acceptance can be very painful as we go through the process of grieving specific hopes and dreams. It is helpful as we go through the acceptance process that we get support and make space to feel our pain to come to a place of clarity. Being mindful of the needs behind what we hoped and dreamt would have happened. Our hopes and dreams reflect our values and are meant to serve our various needs. These needs can very generally be classified as physical needs for food, shelter and health, our social and emotional needs for connection, our mental needs for challenge, learning, development and creativity, and our spiritual need for connection to a loving energy that is larger than ourselves and helps us make sense of the world. Celebrating the progress made towards our goals. Sometimes we can be so blind-sided by our attachment to a particular hurt, loss, mistake, that we forget the overall blessings in our lives, and the good intentions that may have led to a derailing, mistake or oversight with which we remain upset. We can make the choice to recognize our own and other people’s contributions, or we can harp on failures. When we harp solely on failures, we lose sight of possibilities and the gifts in our lives. By recognizing strengths, we are not denying things going wrong. Rather, we are offering perspective. Respecting ourselves and others—asking ourselves and

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH others to be who we are not or to have known what we don’t is disrespectful. It is very obvious that we can’t demand a blind person to “see” in the same way as a person with vision can see. Yet, there are many ways that we ask ourselves and others to act or think without really having the ability, skill or experience to do so. By being respectful, we provide grace and learning and development paths. Go into action—after having accepted that we can’t change the past, feeling our pain, coming to clarity around the needs we are trying to meet, celebrating our blessings, and respecting ourselves and others, we can engage in deliberate action to move towards living our values and dreams. I would love to know your thoughts about this process and what you have gained if

you have chosen to adopt any or all of it. Please feel free to call or email me with questions or comments.

Childcare you can trust like family Discover the joys of hosting an au pair

What is an au pair? An au pair is an educated young person from abroad who lives with you in your home for up to two years, cares for your children and becomes a part of your family. Flexibility An au pair can provide up to 45 hours per week of childcare on a schedule you decide, including early morning, evening and weekend coverage.

Trust Because an au pair lives in your home, mutual trust develops more quickly than with a daycare provider or nanny.

Culture Au pairs come from many countries all over the world and can share their language and culture with your family, fostering a sense of curiosity and global perspective.

How to Choose a Summer Camp 3 Your Kids Will Love and That You Approve But for kids who are eager—or at least willing to give it a shot without much fuss— summer camp offers opportunities kids may not have elsewhere.

But do keep your child’s choices in mind to ensure your child gets the most out of summer camp.

W

hether you’re looking for enrichment for your child, a way to keep your kids occupied and supervised while you work, or need a short reprieve from parenting, there’s sure to be a summer camp that’s the right fit for your child and family.

The benefits of summer camp

a night, let alone a week or more, can cause considerable anxiety. When kids are adamantly opposed, forcing summer camp on them may not be in their best interest. But for kids who are eager—or at least willing to give it a shot without much fuss—summer camp offers opportunities kids may not have elsewhere. Summer camp provides kids the following benefits:

3 improves their selfesteem

3 teaches kids to work with others

3 makes them feel part of a community

3 prevents or reduces summer learning loss

Getting started in your search

3 fosters independence 3 a place to develop new and lasting friendships skills

3 discovery of new interests and hobbies

3 the opportunity for creative expression

3 a break from being plugged-in

3 daily exercise

• What is the purpose of sending your child to summer camp? • Do you want a resident (overnight) or a day camp? • Are you looking for a short-term (week or two) or summer-long program? • Do you want a camp that’s very structured or one that provides your child with lots of freedom and choices? • What are your child’s passions, such as a particular sport, hobby, or other interest?

3 development of new

Summer camp offers kids plenty of benefits, and many kids thrill at the idea of going away to summer camp. Still, for some kids, particularly those who are shy, introverted, or homebodies, the thought of going away for

• What is your budget for summer camp?

Before you begin looking into summer camps, create a list of the criteria you’re looking for. Here are some things you’ll want to consider.

Once you’ve narrowed down some of the criteria, you can begin your search. An excellent place to start is your local parenting magazine. Many summer camps advertise in local parenting publications found at newsstands and online. Also,

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS check out pages 22-35 of this issue for our CAMP DIRECTORY. The American Camp Association (ACA) accredits summer camps. So this is another excellent place to look. The ACA educates camp owners and directors in health and safety for both staff and campers as well as program quality. It then accredits camps that meet the ACA’s standards.

Next steps to finding the perfect summer camp

to summer camp programs. However, the programs themselves should be developed by professionals and have professional oversight to ensure kids are getting the most from their camp experience. • How does the camp ensure your child’s safety? Find out what kind of safety training the camp provides its staffers. Also, is there staff on hand at all times that knows CPR? What are the camp’s procedures in the event your child becomes ill, has an accident, or an emergency? • What is the daily schedule for campers? Ask for a daily itinerary, so you know your child will be getting everything you and your child anticipate from the program.

Once you’ve selected a few summer camps that meet your primary criteria, and that fit your child’s interests, share the choices with your child to see what excites him or her. Be sure to let your child know upfront that you still need to thoroughly investigate the camp(s) before making a final decision. But do keep your child’s choices in mind to ensure your child gets the most out of summer camp. Once you and your child have narrowed the list down to a manageable selection, you’ll want to investigate the camps further. There are several things you’ll want to consider: • What are the staff’s qualifications? Many summer camps use teens to staff the camps. Teens make excellent mentors and can bring liveliness

Sandhill Cranes

• What are the rules? Each camp has its own set of rules. So, find out whether your child is allowed to call you. If it’s a summer-long residential camp, can parents come and visit? Can kids bring along a cell phone or electronics? Also, how much money can they bring, and how is it managed?

Don’t sweat it Keep in mind, although there are many great camps, no camp is likely to offer everything precisely the way you want it. Just choose the one that best fits your child and satisfies your most important criteria. Remember, your child will have many summers to come and plenty more opportunities to work in more exciting camp experiences.

rane season this year is February 15th to April 15th. This is a really fun family weekend trip. Rowe Audubon Sanctuary is located in Nebraska just east of Kearney on the Platte River. They have indoor and outdoor viewing areas. The outdoor blinds are a wonderful experience with the early morning viewing and early evening viewings. I recommend the morning one, but you do have to get up very early. Dress warm and bring hot beverages with you as it can be chilly. You will have to be quiet as well. Bring binoculars! Reservations can be made online at rowe.audubon.org They offer a wide variety of activities. You can also call them at (308) 468-5282 for more information. Kearney has a variety of motels and bed and breakfasts in the area. From Boulder it is about 375 miles driving, and there are daily flights from Denver to the Kearney Regional Airport. The largest concentration of Sandhill Cranes occurs within the last two weeks of March and the first week of April; not surprisingly, this is also when the largest number of crane watchers are in the area. Early March brings more of a mix of waterfowl and cranes on the river, along with Bald Eagles that tend to follow the waterfowl migration. Early April is often overlooked, but this time period can often provide some of the best viewing as the birds are fat and happy, and it’s often apparent in their behavior. Early to mid April is also the best time to try and catch a glimpse of Whooping Cranes as they migrate through the state, and this is also the peak time for prairie chicken/grouse activity on their booming grounds (leks). Just driving around the back roads you will see many cranes in the fields and overhead. The Kearney visitor’s Center has more information on accommodations and events and can be checked out online at www.visitkearney.org/HOME. You might also want to visit the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument. You can’t miss it as it looms over Interstate 80 in Kearney. The museum is a little hokey, but it is a unique experience along with being an education on the history of the settlers in that part of the country that traveled the Oregon Trail. This is a great trip for the family and not that far away. Enjoy!
