Founder’s Letter I’m delighted to introduce the third issue of Martinhal Memories the first edition in this new post-pandemic world! This publication aims to provide our valued guests with some interesting stories, useful information as well as investment opportunities across our EAT, LOVE, LIVE and STAY sections! Discover the Portuguese gastronomical traditions and rituals, as well as some of the entertainment options, keeping in mind the importance of quality family time but also providing the parents the opportunity for some childfree time to enjoy by themselves or as a couple. We’re all about “having your cappuccino with the foam still on it” – and we find ways for you to do this with a vengeance! In our LIVE section, we present our entrepreneurship story, touching upon the challenges but also our achievements during Covid-19 times, always with a positive note! It explains our motivation behind Martinhal’s vision, about the expansion of the Martinhal brand/concept, as well as the status of our exciting new projects that, against all odds, have been developing at a good pace through pandemic times. We have managed to open the United Lisbon International School in September 2020, win a few awards for our real-estate projects, complete the new headquarters of AGEAS in Lisbon, and more! I truly believe in Portugal’s potential in terms of business opportunities, and I’m delighted to have chosen it as a place to live and start a family, to grow the Martinhal Family Resorts & Hotels and keep diversifying our businesses. More than just eating, dining in Portugal is a family ritual!

ortugal is well known for its traditional gastronomy and mealtimes are crucial part of the Portuguese culture. Even nowadays, whether it is lunch or dinner, the meals are often longer and made of starter, main course and dessert. The meal usually starts with a healthy vegetable soup and there is a large variety of soups! “In a Portuguese home, it is good to have bread and wine on the table” – This song by Amália Rodrigues, one of most well-known Portuguese singers, sums up this Portuguese tradition. Some of the key elements in our cuisine are bread, olives, olive oil, garlic, coriander, soups, stews as well as fish, seafood and meat – all freshly prepared with simple ingredients. Family time, me time, couple time - everyone’s needs are thought through!

lthough traveling with kids may seem a little demanding, especially in these times, it is a great opportunity to strengthen bonds by embracing travel as a family. We have all had time to reflect during the pandemic and multi-generational family travel has become even more important! In-Resort Outdoor Fun Martinhal continues to improve and enlarge our outdoor activity offer. We now have mini-golf and petanque as well, in addition to the popular pump track and the lovely outdoor kids’ playgrounds around the resort. Artist in Residence Every year, along with our annual Luxury, Art and Design Weekend at Martinhal Sagres, a new artist is invited to create specific pieces to enrich our resorts with great local art. During the 9th edition of this exciting event that celebrates art, entrepreneurship, design and luxury, talented Portuguese artists have once again brought their creativity into our spaces. In the past, we have celebrated artists such as Kruella D’Enfer, Jorge Santos, Tamara Alves, Ana Perez Quiroga and Maria Imaginário among others – some of whose pieces permanently adorn our walls in our resorts/ hotels. The 2021 edition showcases Graça Paz’s stunning art – all deeply inspired by the Sterns and Martinhal’s resorts. Togetherness (after quarantine) is the name for the concept developed for this exhibition: at a time when the world was forced to stay isolated, and the realization that the human being is not meant to be alone. The Sterns Staying optimistic through the pandemic: The Stern businesses continue to expand and diversify even through these tough times!
M
artinhal is now a well-known name among the most discerning family travelers in Europe and beyond. This award-winning project was the brainchild of the Singaporean/ Indian/ British/ Swiss couple - Chitra and Roman Stern. The Sterns saw Sagres as an area of unparalleled beauty and nature; the Algarve with its amazing white sandy beaches and low-density development was a spectacular destination; Portugal has lovely and welcoming people and a fantastic food culture.
