Welcome to the 14th Leeds Young Film Festival presented by MediaFish!

We’re a dedicated group of young people from Leeds who love film. We meet in the Leeds Film Academy every week to plan the Film Festival and decide on which films we want to show.

Regardless of your age and film taste, the festival has something for you - from our early years screenings including Scooby Doo and Capelito to a special preview of the new Disney film The Odd Life of Timothy Green, you won’t be disappointed!

This year we’re also celebrating some great milestones in cinema history, so check out some of the films that were made 10, 25, 50 or even 80 years ago!

For 2013 Leeds Young Film Festival is very proud to support the Child Friendly Leeds initiative which aims to make Leeds a place where children are valued, supported, enjoy growing up, and look forward to a bright future. We’ve always believed that children and young people should enjoy the amazing culture that Leeds has to offer and that the Film Festival delivers something special and unique. For our 14th edition we have once again scoured the planet to bring you the best new and unseen films, including some magical movies that you’ll never see at the multiplex or at home.

For those of you who want to do more than just watch films, the Film Academy programme is back bigger than ever with lots of exciting workshops and masterclasses aimed at giving you the chance to go behind the scenes and learn more about the moving image industry (see pages 28-33).

The festival now hosts three young filmmaking competitions celebrating young filmmaking talent (including the brand new Leeds Young Music Video Awards with East Leeds FM) so it has never been a better time to be a young filmmaker in the city.

With our under 19 ticket price still just £2 per film and passes for the whole festival starting at just £10 why not bring your friends and family and spend Easter immersed in the big wide world of film!

Milestones in Cinema Since the birth of cinema in Leeds 125 years ago there have been some important milestones in cinema and film history, including 100 years since the BBFC first started rating films and 50 years since the first multiplex cinema opened.

BIYF proudly presents eleven days of performances and workshops by and for young people across Leeds, in dance, music, drama, film, visual art and literature. Whatever your interest there will be something for you! The festival is programmed by young people for young people aged 13-19. This year you will be able to take part in arts activities all across Leeds including in the new Trinity shopping centre.

Wednesday 27 March 2013 Leeds Young Filmmaker Golden Owl Awards 7.00pm Leeds Town Hall (doors open 6.00pm) ArtForms, Leeds Young Film Festival and Logistik are delighted to present the 2013 Golden Owl Awards, celebrating the work of Leeds schools, community groups and individual filmmakers.

This ‘Oscars’ style red carpet, black tie extravaganza will showcase the best new films from the emerging talent across the city in the splendour of Leeds Town Hall with awards being handed out by local dignitaries and celebrities. Expect to see some famous faces from film and TV and the sounds of Leeds Youth Jazz and Training Orchestras filling the auditorium as well as one or two other surprises throughout the night!

You can follow the action as it unfolds as Young Bloggers working with North East Leeds City Centre will be documenting the day to share online.

Following many failed attempts a young couple discover that they cannot have children. Drowning their sorrows they list all the wonderful attributes and achievements a child of theirs would have and bury them in a box in the garden. Next morning, following a terrible storm, a young boy appears, although Timothy Green is not all that he seems...

The Odd Life of Timothy Green is directed by Peter Hedges who rose to success with the adaptation of his own novel What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? which earned Leonardo di Caprio an Academy Award® nomination. His adaptation of Nick Hornby’s About A Boy was also Oscar nominated in 2002.

Jennifer Garner (Juno, Electra) and Joel Edgerton (Star Wars Ep.II Attack of the Clones) play Timothy’s parents but it is newcomer CJ Adams who steals the film with his portrayal of Timothy, a boy looking for a home and a place to belong. With a supporting cast including such great stars as Dianne Wiest, M Emmett Walsh, David Morse and introducing rapper Common as Coach Cal, the latest offering from Disney is sure to be a huge hit on release, so come and be the first to see it at this special preview.

A ‘toon hating detective Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) is hired by star actor Roger Rabbit to snoop on his wife Jessica. But when Roger becomes the prime suspect in a murder, Eddie might be the cartoon rabbit’s only hope.

The mix of live action and animation was groundbreaking in 1988 and still looks great today.

Pirates Ahoy! in which Scooby and the gang find themselves in the Bermuda Triangle beset by skeleton ghost pirates!

Following the screening there will also be a live Skype link up with Mike Carey (award-winning author and writer of Marvel’s X-Men: Legacy) who adapted Neverwhere into comic book form in 2005.

Playful Leeds invite you to enjoy a special screening of the classic 1999 animation The Iron Giant, based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. Set in 1957 it tells the story of a lonely boy named Hogarth raised by his mother (the widow of an Air Force pilot), who discovers an iron giant who fell from space.

The selection of the film and Robot Animate! workshop (see page 30) launches The March of the Robots, a year long programme of events, films, workshops, talks and playfulness culminating in a city wide Robot take over in 2014!

Having only just met, spoiled socialite Melanie Daniels pursues lawyer Mitch Brenner to the coastal town of Bodega Bay. When Melanie sails across the bay to deliver a lovebird to Mitch’s sister, she is attacked by a gull on her way back. Before long the town is attacked by marauding birds of all varieties.

Headingley Litfest presents Big Fish Director: Tim Burton Country: USA Year: 2003 Runtime: 125 mins Language: English

Tim Burton’s adaptation of Daniel Wallace’s novel fits the ‘Lives and Loves’ theme of this year’s Headingley Litfest perfectly. The story tells of a man trying to learn more about his dying father’s life by recreating the fantastic stories he has been told over the years.

Fans of storytelling should check out the ‘Tall Tales and Local Legends’ event preceding the screening.
